Derivative Works - Using Modulation for a new take on old tunes

  • This week taking a more liberal interpretation of the word 'compose' - A few years back I got bored of classic session tunes and started mixing (or in this case, Minoring) things up by modulating them (eg. playing a major tune as minor). One of the tunes that survived the process best was the jig 'Calliope House'. Some time later, I heard about a double homicide at a Caravan Park in Calliope, Queensland, and knew I'd found this tune's True Name.
Played here as a dirge to better suit the theme, but works just as well as a jig similar to the unadulterated version.
Also if you came here looking for a more educational video on how to actually modulate tunes like this, drop a comment and I'll see about doing one some time in the future!

That's an interesting topic. Would love to see a tutorial if you have got the time to do it.

Are you modulating to the relative minor or the parallel minor of the key?

I’ve modulated the melody to the parallel minor (mixing between harmonic and natural minor depending on what I thought worked better). I talk a bit about modulating harmony to the relative minor in the Merry Blacksmith video.
