    I've listened to this over and over, great sound and resonance coming out of that bouzouki! Jon Doran's performance here is also incredible.

    Excellent performance, a song that still touches my heart, like when I first listened to the Planxty version, some 40 years ago. Please keep it up, kind of comforting that young folks embrace music like this, now that many a folk artist has passed away. All the best from Germany.

    The lyrics if you want to sing along (my version, corrections are welcome).
    When Boney commanded His troops for to stand
    He leveled his cannon All over the land
    And he’s leveled his cannon The victory to gain
    And he slew my light horseman From the wars coming home
    Broken hearted I'll wander For the loss of my love
    He’s my Bonny Light Horseman In the wars he was slain
    And if I were a small bird And I had wings to fly
    I'd fly over the salt sea To where my own love does lie
    Oh there’s no mortal breathing That my favour shall gain
    Since my bonny light horseman In the wars he was slain
    Broken hearted I'll wander For the loss of my love
    He’s my Bonny Light Horseman In the wars he was slain
    So I’ll dress in men’s clothing To the army I’ll go
    I’ll be true to my subjects And I’ll fight all its foes
    And I’ll count it an honor If I could obtain
    For to die in the field That my own love was slain
    Broken hearted I'll wander For the loss of my love
    He’s my Bonny Light Horseman In the wars he was slain
    Now when Boney commanded His troops for to stand
    He leveled his cannon All over…. the land -and he’s
    Leveled his cannon The victory to gain
    And he slew my light horseman From the wars coming home
    Broken hearted I'll wander For the loss of my love
    He’s my Bonny Light Horseman In the wars he was slain
    Broken hearted I'll wonder For the loss of my love
    He’s my Bonny Light Horseman In the wars he was slain

    Hi everyone, I like this version of the lyrics, but I couldn't find it on the internet. As I'm studying the song, I wrote down the lyrics myself. There's one verse I couldn't transcribe. At 2.05 it goes
    "So I'll dress in men's clothing
    To the army I'll go
    I'll be true to my subjects..."
    The last line sounds like
    "And I'll fight too I suppose "
    But I'm not sure.
    Any mother tongue fan of this song who can take the challenge and sort it out? In reward, I'll post the whole lyrics for the song. Ciao!

    • @nicolaacquarone8977

      I haven't found any written version for the lyrics or tab, so I wrote the lyrics and I had a go by ear. Concerning the instrumental part, there are many variations and it is nearly impossible to transcribe it completely. If you want to try to play and sing along, I can write the fingering for the basic chords.

    Curious, the difference between octave mandolin and bouzouki?

    • @aarondcruz2458
      @aarondcruz2458 2 місяці тому +1

      They are sometimes used interchangeably. Irish bouzoukis are most often tuned GDAD, but can be tuned GDAE the same as an octave mandolin. They are usually a longer scale length than an octave mandolin. The 'correct' classification for bouzoukis / octave mandolins / citterns is an ongoing discussion!

    • @maxwellfan55
      @maxwellfan55 2 місяці тому

      @@aarondcruz2458 Thanks. I'm also curious, as a guitar player I'm keen to get into the dimension of octave m or bouzouki and poised to purchase the latter instrument.
      Is there much difference between the sound of these two instruments, do they both capo WELL for vocals, single notes etc? Flexibility of key change would be an essential consideration for me, over say a mandola/mandolin.

    • @aarondcruz2458
      @aarondcruz2458 Місяць тому +1

      @@maxwellfan55 I'd say bouzouki is the norm for accompaniment, both instrumental tunes and songs, the higher tension and the tuning lends itself to that. They are regularly capoed wherever is conveninent due to the long scale length (see Daoiri Farrell and Jon's performance here for example), so key shouldn't be an issue. If you're intending to flatpick fiddle tunes etc in the original key like a tenor banjo the scale length is probably a bit too long to be comfortable. I'm also a guitar player, I have a tenor guitar (GDAE) to explore a bit of the bouzouki/OM repertoire but I'm intending to transition to bouzouki at some point...

    • @maxwellfan55
      @maxwellfan55 Місяць тому

      @@aarondcruz2458 Thanks very much. I tried the bouzouki but found the long, unbalanced body shape less pleasing to play. Also, how the capo dulls the sound further up the frets. So, uncertain at present.
      I may settle for a smaller instrument rather than compromise. Actually I've recently been having a LOT of fun with mandolin and dulcimers, noting and J Mitchell style tunings.
      Cheers again for info.
