Eastern Scales + Western Rhythms = ???
16 tunes in I was looking for inspiration, and decided to try composing using a scale built after the fashion of the Melakarta of the Carnatic music tradition. The result was this Nordic Pols in a Carnatic scale, dubbed Ragavardhinipols. Things start to get even more interesting when the 'diatonic chords' for the scale make an appearance the second time round the tune.
If you'd be interested in a more didactic video about finding new scales for composition using this method, drop a comment and I'll try to put something together!

I had a few technically challenging tunes lined up for coming weeks, but I realised that the current winter weather was making these more difficult than they need to be, so I decided instead to write a slower tune which would function better as a warm up for cold hands! Stay tuned for some faster tunes in a couple of months when the barometer starts rising! #irishbouzouki #bouzouki #irishmusic ...

A jig I wrote a few years back. What began as an attempt to combine a Hungarian minor scale and a blues scale degenerated into a chromatic abomination utilising most of the fretboard. Originally conceived for a set including a "Norwegian Wood" waltz and The Swedish Jig, I gave it a fittingly Scandinavian name. An alternative title after adding the comp is 'Please don't sue me Chris Isaak'. A fu...

Rounding out the first half of 2024's tunes is this Kopanitsa I wrote several years ago during a trip down a rabbit hole of Bulgarian/Irish Fusion - probably not the first bouzouki player to be introduced to Bulgarian music via Andy Irvine! One of my favourite sounds on bouzouki is this very modal droning, sliding style with a relentless feeling to the rhythm - so this week I decided to dedicate a tune to it! This week a different type of tune - probably best described as a waltz, though in the Irish Dancing world this would be a 'heavy jig'. The music might sound deceptively slow, but the dance at competitive level is extremely fast, and I tried to capture a bit of that in the accompaniment. I wrote the tune in C which is a fairly awful key to play in because the body makes it difficult to access t...

This week, an older tune which I wrote a few years ago while living in Scotland. Slängpolskas were the first Swedish tunes I came across and I was instantly attracted to the strong pulse. This week taking a more liberal interpretation of the word 'compose' - A few years back I got bored of classic session tunes and started mixing (or in this case, Minoring) things up by modulating them (eg. playing a major tune as minor). One of the tunes that survived the process best was the jig 'Calliope House'. Some time later, I heard about a double homicide at a Caravan Park in Calliope, Q...

In 2021 I returned to Australia after 2 years living in Sweden. A few months later, enjoying kanelbullar and a cup of fresh filter coffee, I wrote this polska. In my head it's been called 'Nostalgia Polska', but more than just nostalgia it represents the strange feeling of homesickness for somewhere away from home, so the 8th fortnightly tune for 2024 has been dubbed 'Awaysick'. My instrument was made by Daniel Hoban www.dhobanguitars.com/ . There are a few well known makers but most of them are quite pricey and have long waiting lists, if the builder is even building any more. Your best bet for value is probably to find someone local. There is an 'Irish Bouzouki forum' on facebook that might have a list of known builders or at least some collective knowledge about builders.

      It depends on your budget. The 'entry level' ones tend to be from Hora in Romania, my first bouzouki was from an online vendor called 'foolfisch' who I think had them made by Hora, maybe to a custom design. It was pretty bad but it was cheap and it had the bouzouki sound, and playable after a good set up. From my limited experience with them, I haven't been impressed by any of the mid-level ones (eg. $1000+ factory models). I think if you're spending more than $1500 you might as well just get a luthier-made instrument because it's going to be orders of magnitude better than those for 2x or so the price. The ideal would probably be to get a decent second hand one relatively cheap on marketplace. Greek bouzoukis are more common (in Melbourne at least) and I see them pretty regularly at $500-1000 though I don't know anything about the quality. If you can afford a few thousand for a new luthier instrument, mine was made by Daniel Hoban in Melbourne and I've been extremely happy with it, Daniel is also a really nice guy to work with.

    • @conceptSde
      @conceptSde Місяць тому

      I‘m from Europe (Germany), which is obvously more bouzouki-ish. The Hora instruments which are from Romania and shipped world wide by Thomann are pretty horrible from my pov (tried two and sent them back the next day). My suggestion if you can’t afford a luthier instrument: Look for the Trinity College zouks (made in Japan), at least the older ones are pretty good if you find one down under (never tried a new one). Fender also had an Irish Bouzouki (Korean made) for a short time some 10+ years back. Not really great, but a really usable instrument with a decent pickup and preamp installed. Both would be around 250 (Fender) to 500 (Trinty) USD second hand.

    Eamon, this video has a really high quality content to time ratio. Just got my first bouzouki so it's a good find; I've been playing guitar for decades so it's a reasonably painless transition, although I didn't expect the kind of awkward experience you get when playing it sitting down. BTW, I have used your sampled bouzouki on a few tracks now. More great value stuff.

    • @EamonCoughlan

      Thanks, glad it's been useful! For these picking videos I tried to keep things really brief and go into more broad detail in some of the longer ones like the theory video and the Merry Blacksmith comping one. I also don't like playing sitting down, even with guitars! Oud is even worse because its round-backed and wider than the bouzouki, and not readily amenable to a strap.
