      Hi Tony many thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the positive comment! I'm hoping that this electric reel helps me connect with some big halibut this season! Yes you are right an electric reel would certainly come in handy when battling a Marlin! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    It really makes it nice when weeding through the chickens. When you start going deeper than 300 feet the electric reels really shine. I have fished as deep as 900 with mine.

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

      That's awesome! Yes I imagine that the electric gear is especially helpful if you arrive at a "chicken fest" and need to come up and down a lot before the nicer size halibut show up. Thanks for stopping by and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    Very interesting! Loved the trial and review. My boat has been in the water for a few minutes this week to "unwinterize" it, so it's all ready for the season ahead! (even though we have had several snow storms blow through last week!)

      Hi Kim thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this footage! Great to hear that your boat is "un-winterized" haha. I put my boat in last week so the 2024 season is underway but of course these first few weeks are super slow! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

      Thanks @Fishpassionbox_global I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Haha you have a very good point here! After hitting "auto up" on the electric reel it will be hard to get used to reeling manually from any significant depth ever again! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

    Interesting. Electric reels are great for determining depth, but I still find the retrieve seems to take something away from the battle. Thanks for sharing.

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

      Hi @AnglingSpiders thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the comment! I specifically chose a smaller electric reel so that I could fish this "in hand" instead of many electric reels which are built to be fished exclusively out of a rod holder. With some of the deep drops here in Alaska reaching over 1,000 feet, traditional gear becomes less practical or impossible to use. Targeting 400 - 1,000ft opens up a whole new range of spots and opportunity to target big halibut and other deep-water fish such as black cod (Sablefish). I definitely understand what you are saying regarding the thrill of battling a big fish! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому +1

      Hey @Eckstant thanks for stopping by and yes indeed the 2024 season is almost here! This reel is a Daiwa Seaborg 500MJ - small enough to be fished "in hand" while jigging for halibut! Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

    Captain Zac and Mary
    The electric is the only way to go for deep water drops.. I would imagine the Queen will be wanting one
    She will put it in the rod holder and flip the switch..
    600 to the boat easy peasy.. I look forward to seeing your 2024 adventures… Tight Lines my friend..!

      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

      Hey Chuck yes indeed you are spot on - that's exactly what this reel is! Wow 7 electric reels - sounds like you've really taken a liking to fishing just beyond where most anglers decide to fish! Do you fish mostly for halibut with your electric reels or do you target black cod, rockfish and/or ling cod as well? Tight lines! Captain Zac

    • @chuckrichards3501
      @chuckrichards3501 3 місяці тому +2

      @CaptainZac I fish for just about everything with my electrics. From halibut to trout. They are great when fishing alone with 2 rods. If I get a strike I can just flip a switch and bring in the second rod. I have 4 300 size reels a 500mj and 2 shimano beastmaster 9000. Wanted to use them for deep rockfish. Have spread over many aspects. I can still fight the fish and feel the tug, but don't need to mess up my shoulder anymore.

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

      Wow that's awesome it sounds like you are totally dialed in with a great set of reels! I have a long way to go before claiming that I'm proficient with this reel but am already enjoying the new terrain this setup gives me access to. It is a totally different view of the depth charts when 400-1000 feet are in play! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

    So Zak, how do you like the deepwater electtic reel (s)?
    Wasit worth the money ?
    I'm geared for halibut and ling down here in Washington aboard my copycat boat, " ALASKAN CORSAIR".
    Thought about electrics, myself...

      Hi Thomas thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! Sounds like you are geared up for another great season ahead! I'm still testing out the electric reel but so far so good. There are some very good halibut spots that are just out of range of traditional gear that I plan on targeting this season. With more experience this season, I'll have sharper perspective about pros/cons and whether it is worth the $. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

    Nice reel. A good chicken hauler. Which one did you get? Ive been wanting to get one but damn they are expensive. Seems worth it though to fish those deeper spot. 1000' ? Wow. Are you allowed to keep foul hooked fish up there? 👍

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi @PeelingLine thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this footage! I went with the Diawa Seaborg 500MJ - which is small enough to fish out of the hand (vs. only rod holder) so I can jig for halibut. They are very expensive but I'm hoping that over hundreds of uses the cost will spread across a lot of adventures. Yes - in the salt water you are allowed to keep foul hooked fish (but not in fresh water). Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

      Hi Carl thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! I'm using a 12v marine battery that I bring on board just for this reel (to always ensure a full charge and to avoid additional draw on my existing battery system). Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

    Zac, you replied the real is a Seaborg 500 MJ, their website indicates 550' of 40lb J- braid, you went down almost 1000'. What line are spooled with?

    • @CaptainZac
      @CaptainZac  3 місяці тому

    • @CaptainZac

      Hi Jimmie thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this footage. I prefer the sport fishing action of being able to move the jig up and down and feel the fish strike. The electric reel just gives me a bit of extra depth range so I don't have to hand reel it up from 500+ feet. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac
