NXIVM is a total knock off of Scientology, except instead of a Tom Cruise they downgraded to Alison Mack.
They were grooming females, it was an abuse ring creating more abusers.
@@kerilyndesiree6188 You denying these feminists their sorority stamp may have resulted in you being burned at the stake, is that a gamble you are willing to take? So noble of thee.
Yeah I couldn't believe how similar NXIVM is to Scientolgy’s structure, Didn't even try to hide it either!..... Very American indeed

I want to sit next to this fella( Dr. Grande, not Reineri) at a dinner party with a mixture of different flamboyant types.. just to listen to what he’d say under his breathe...
His claim to be the smartest person on earth was the first red flag. I marvel at his followers' willingness to accept his claims and requests without challenging them.
I also thought it strange that people join these cults that claim to have all the answers for society’s problems whilst only representing a small section of society. If I think I’m in a group that is going to change the world, the group should reflect that diversity.
and the 2nd one that he was a concert pianist, and then he only seemed to play Moonlight Sonata, which is the piece every 4th grade student plays to show off to his/her mother's friends!! And in the doco all his followers are like OMG he's the messiah playing piano!!
They were brainwashed.
Why was Keith the head guru? Like, what did the followers see in him that made him special? What exactly had he accomplished that was so life changing and awe inspiring? I don’t get it
the most recent "little bit culty" podcast goes into how Raniere used thought limiting cliches to shut critical thinking down. Thy are interviewng Amanda Montell, who wrote the book "Cultish: The Language of Fantaticism"
I have been fascinated with this case because it so easily could have been me. I have C-PTSD and got involved with a similar organization in my early twenties. The main idea of the teachings in the Executive Trainings I took was that you were the cause of everything good or bad that happened in your life. Early on this was very empowering to me, but as I grew older it became extremely damaging. I am so glad I found good therapists to work through all of that.
Yes, the whole thing around "you are at cause for everything that happens to you" is brainwashing. While I do believe that we do have control over our immediate environment, if a tornado comes along and destroys your house, thst in itself blows that concept out of the water. We cannot control what other people do. Anyways, that's my two cents.
Good for you. False gods know how to weave truth within lies - that is what is called heresy and it is extremely dangerous.
God is against Idol worship. If one would read othe Word of God, you would know how evil he is. We must depend on God and believe that Jesus is the Messiah and his innocent blood was shed that we, through repentance, obedience can obtain eternal life. If they had read the Bible they might have not believed in Keith as a "god" and realized what an evil manipulator he was. Making one feel that they're not enough. Breaking the women down to serve his own sick needs. God would never make you feel that way. I'm glad that I am not his judge. However, I don't think God would want someone like him in His kingdom! How sad that these beautiful intelligent women were so deceived! Turn to God His Word will tell you what God’s plan is for you. He loves all of His children and wishes that all of His children would come to repentance. He is merciful! He is a healer!! I pray that these women recover and find their way. Watching the Vow I could see what a con man he was!

I have autism and I struggle a lot with understanding people and sarcasm so watching these videos is helping me with both and giving very valuable information. Thank you for putting these videos together. :)
Such a great analysis. I will refer back to this on my series on skepticism in the quest for life advice.
I notice that if you look at most cults - even several famous self development seminars, the word salad, jargon, and crunchy grammar, creates a cognitive dissonance that normally compels a person to fill in the gaps to make sense of things. It grooms people to get used to filling in the gaps and not questioning the nonsense anymore.
Before this, Raniere seems to make the subject feel special using NLP mirroring and pacing and an eye lock hypnotic induction, he’s broken down their beliefs and their self-esteem by using their words against them. Then he comes in with The Promise/Salvation. It’s classical brainwashing.
Control is maintained with control over their body, social inclusion/exclusion, recruitment mandates and rank, as you, Dr Grande, say, and also with shame or what you call humiliation. . (Collateral in this case). I guess this creates the byproduct of fear. I think shame goes through it all, beyond this singular humiliation. Controlling a woman’s weight works because she comes with a lifetime conditioning of body shame.
And oh those flying monkeys!
Classic. Same formula, different place: Manson, Jim Jones, and many many self-development seminar systems and many many people with cluster B disorders that we meet ever day.
Vulnerable people are candy for these predators. I hope people will be very very wary. The world is facing global trauma. Everyone is more vulnerable. I hope this will help viewers be skeptics of anyone offering life advice or training, right now.
Great point about maintaining boundaries and needing to believe.
I haven’t seen the Vow but many interviews with Raniere. I’ve seen several smart people fall prey to these kind of situations. Be aware.

Having people work or do chores is a method that cults have people invest in the brainwashing. People hold on to circumstances that they have a hand in building.

Excellent analysis Dr.Grande. I'm a survivor(spiritual survivor) of a cult like spiritual group that I was part of 21 years of my life. I joined the group when I was very young (19) and didn't have much experience in life. I'm one of those lucky ones that left the group in a healthy mind frame and emotionally balanced. I attribute that to my stubborn and skeptical overall personality, that helped me to not give my mental or emotional intimacy to anyone in the group. Of course, I went through a long process of self reflection, healing and reclaiming my own persona, rebuilding my personality in an authentic non polluted way. It was painful, but I'm grateful to life that I was able to overcome a truly deep level of manipulation, gaslighting and identity shaming that in a very subtle way happened for 21 years. Thanks and to all people out there, listen, learn and never underestimate your gut feelings.
Congrates to you! I have no doubt you have a relatively high state of awareness, that is to say self reflection!

It never ceases to amaze me how many adults are wiling to suspend disbelief and voluntarily hand over their autonomy to a someone like Raniere. In a totalitarian society, where dissent can have dire, even fatal consequences, it's understandable; in a free society it beggars belief.

Life is tough. It’s a relief if you can find someone else to take charge of your life, like a parent would. Somebody you can trust to look after you. Somebody to take all the pain and stress away. I watched The Vow over the weekend. Very well done.
What’s really scary about this case is the involvement of extremely wealthy people who completely committed themselves to Raniere i.e. the Bronfman sisters. They spent around $150 million dollars on NXIVM, and used their wealth to persecute and punish NXIVM’s perceived enemies. And they’re not remorseful, either. 😨

YES, And Evil people gravitate toward religious groups and use them for their own motivations. I am not targeting any particular religion, especially not targeting Catholics ( if which I am)or mainline religions or any clergy, I am talking about a special case or two I know of.. in religious groups I joined and I also know that many students of the study of the disciplines psychology are very messed up, sick people who desire to get control over other people. I have seen that close at hand as well. Be careful out there. I have studied Social Work and saw the persons in school beside me who seemed to have evil motivations and were very suspicious in their way of navigating everything in their life, knowing they would gain control over someone somewhere after graduation. Be careful... but trust your gut.
Other people have been hurt by Doctors, judges and psychiatrists.I have a collection of books. I have read a few books on those situations and lived through a few incidents dodging most of them. Some people are power seeking, not just attention seeking.
Some are blatantly status seeking, and all of this can harm others in their pathway. Some of these people form a hierarchical ranking and store opinions about everyone they know in order to maintain their illusion of superiority, even with their so called friends with whom they regularly meet and rub shoulders. And when it all hits the fan to be systematically shredded in perfectly cut pieces of shit .....you are left there absorbing each piece of flying excrement as it comes your way and soils you temporarily until you pick yourself up and keep moving forward to step into a warm and loving cleansing bath and shower of cleansing and healing.....Healing does happen.

Dr Todd, with great appreciation for your efforts and thoughts, an excellent analysis. The question I would like to see adressed, maybe in a separate series, relate to my two concerns namely whether his punishment was not to sweep societal guilt under the carpet especially questioning sensibility and appropriateness in punishment of him contrasted to a macro context of participant punishment. In short many involved could ethically be unsuitable for what they are going to drift into. Then secondly which is perhaps more in this field of interest, can we really say that our excuse for rehabilitation is making sense and what can we propose specifically in this as a typical instance.

It blows my mind how many people fall for people like this, he was a master manipulater. Thank you for this video.
Calling him a master manipulator is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? Despite many people falling for his BS, many more didn’t.
He was indeed a Master Manipulator.. this is a really interesting Cult because the people that were involved were not your usual victims..
It's remarkably easy to fall into a scheme like this. Don't ever think you're too smart for them because none of us truly are all the time.
It just takes the wrong person to pick up on your weaknesses at a bad time in your life and you'll get sucked in faster and deeper than you could ever imagine.
I never thought I could fall for something like this. I'm strong minded and stubborn as hell. It's really interesting how it happens and it has to be just the right set of circumstances it seems. I got involved in a political organization for 2 years, and although that's not technically a cult, some of the practices they used were similar. At the very least, I fell into a toxic cesspool of groupthink. My point is, it made me realize that many of us are more susceptible to things like this than we realize. In my case, they fed off of my need to be a good person. Even though things felt wrong, it was bashed into my head over and over that I was wrong and I'm the bad one, simply put. I went along with things I questioned for longer than I like to acknowledge. Mine is a very small example, but it most definitely made me realize that we can fall victim to things like this easier than we realize. These types of people know how to use your deepest fears, wants, and vulnerabilities against you.
@@VersusArdua You nailed it. Under the right circumstances, I think just about anyone could fall into it. Maybe not this particular one, but there is something (a group) out there that could snag just about anyone if they offer the right things.
Who else comes to the comment section whilst the adverts/commercials are on? Dr Grande deserves that UA-cam coin.
Another great video! 😊
Aww thank you for answering to my request. It is so interesting to hear what you have to say!
Ernest Miller Hemingway anagram is “Hymeneal Writer Mingles”, “Writing heal Mere Sly Men”
While Keith’s ability to manipulate is fascinating, I also wonder about his victims. How can people be so gullible and easily lead to do things against their own conscience?
Vulnerability. Cults often target the weak and vulnerable. People down on their luck, recently divorced, alone/isolated, financially struggling, already struggling with mental illness/prior trauma, etc.
@@judylee1860 I understand where you are coming from. I was not implying that everyone involved is innocent, but you cannot deny that there are certainly victims when it comes to manipulators like Keith Raniere. History is full of instances where people are brainwashed/manipulated into believing things that don’t align with their prior values/reality. Don’t underestimate the power of hypnosis/NLP. It’s a scary thought, but you don’t always have as much control over your mind as you’d like to believe. Past trauma isn’t an excuse, but it helps explain why some people would be more vulnerable to manipulation.
@@judylee1860 I think I wasn’t clear enough about what I meant, I’m not talking about women like Maxwell and the women who helped Raniere. I’m talking about the victims. I was referring to cult members in general as well, not just those involved with Raniere. If it helps clarify, I have been traumatized by someone like Raniere as well, that’s more where I’m coming from. Apologies, I should have been more articulate/specific in my original post.
@@judylee1860 i’m confused, are you saying that people who are forced to do something against their own will are not victims? i think that 100% a victim as they do not have a choice in their actions. it’s not like they can just disappear or do something else. i’m sure so many of them would rather choose any other options but they are forced. there’s plenty of ways to force someone to do something that they do not want to do, by force, by gaslighting, by threatening, plus so much more. if someone said “join my cult or i’m gonna blow up ur family” well slap my knee but i’ll join the cult
@@5O4evr uh no one wants to be raped ? all sex is not consensual unless all parties say clearly yes
This was a good one. It's most interesting when you provide your insights after the ocean stuff
This was a most excellent video on the subject of cults. I appreciate your thoughtful and comprehensive work on this topic.
