I fear the day when Dr Grande makes a video looking at the mental health and personality factors of people that enjoy watching videos on mental health and personality factors. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but these videos really do help when dealing with difficult people in real life, even though I am not a mental health professional.
This event hits home for me Doctor. My auntie and her children were members of Jones’s cult and they went to the jungle with him. Unfortunately, they all died on that tragic day in 1978.
I’ll share this information with you Doctor. My auntie who got caught up in the Jim Jones tragedy was Barbara Ann Grissette. She had four children who also went to Guyana with her. After they were murdered their bodies were shipped back to Los Angeles and I went to the funeral. Unfortunately, the news media have spun a different story to the public. My auntie and all of my cousins were shot in the head, which is based off of the autopsy report. I was 12 years old when my auntie and cousins were murdered. I haven’t expressed this to anyone. I apologize for pouring this on you.
Thank you Doc. While we're on the theme of cult leaders, how about L. Ron Hubbard? How does he compare to the likes of Jones and Koresh? From what I can see there's a cold deliberate Machiavellian quality - I don't for a second believe that he believed a single word of what he propounded. (I even heard a story that he made a wager with friends that he could invent a religion and have people believe it...In order, one supposes, to secretly laugh at human stupidity and gullibility: and the power trip of course). Is there grounds for suspecting a diagnosable disorder in Hubbard, or was he just a subclinical case of narcissism/anti-social qualities?
Do iiiiittt, Dr. Grande! Don't worry, the internet will protect you from the angry Scientologists. We've beat them plenty of times already. They're a joke at this point.
"His mother claimed that she had visions when she was pregnant that indicated Jones would be a great religious leader. She would remind Jones of this remarkable destiny quite regularly. So, what could go wrong with that strategy?" What indeed. As an aside, one person surviving the ambush at the Jonestown airstrip is Jackie Speier, U.S. House Representative for California's 14th District. She went to Jonestown as part of Rep. Leo Ryan's entourage to Guyana, as she was his congressional aide at the time. The U.S. House seat for CA-14 is the seat formerly held by Leo Ryan. To state Rep. Speier 'survived' the Jonestown massacre is an understatement; she had to endure five gunshot wounds for nearly a full day before receiving treatment.
I remember this event vividly, I was 13 when it happened. I lost my childhood innocence seeing all the photos of the dead laying face down, the children were the worst. My social studies teacher talked about it in class for days. Everyone was horrified at the atrocity. I had nightmares for a long time, thinking about the crying people being forced to drink poison, most did not want to die. I probably could have used some therapy after that. Jones was a sick, evil bastard.
Yes, I remember those photos too, and it was the children with the little upturned soles of their feet that tore me apart. Such a dreadful, dreadful event. :(
You and your videos are the embodiment of the 'faith in humanity restored' meme. I'm glad that you exist and decided to make videos. I'm sure a lot of people couldn't live without your humor in their life anymore. Excellent work. You treat us so well.
Religious characters are always interesting to me. Of all mental disorders, this particular strain is alive and well in my family. I feel sorry for children born to people devoted to horrible people like this and especially sorry for the ones who couldn't escape his mania and their own. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for bringing logic and science-based analyses, summaries, and comments to this crazy world!
Agreed partly. However, classifying religiosity as a mental disorder seems wrong, since you do not know if they are delusional or not. I found genuine faith only when far into adulthood. Forcing one's faith onto others is the pathology here - not the faith per se, IMHO.
@@privatehobbydetective4561 A delusion is an idiosyncratic belief or impression that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted by reality or rational argument. Religiosity may be a socially accepted delusion, but it is still a delusion. People being offended by this- though, imo they really should not be, especially if they are making the choice to "believe"- does not negate this.

A great companion piece I would like to see: insight into the people who followed him. what makes a person blindly believe when they most likely have moments of doubt? who is vulnerable to a monster like Jones? will we ever see something like this again?
those desperate for recognition, affection and/or a sense of purpose. think of love (familial, platonic, romantic, whichever) as a fundamental human need similar to how we need oxygen. when a person is deprived of oxygen, they'll look for anything that will fill their lungs, even if it's toxic. likewise, if a person is starved of love, they'll turn to anyone who recognizes them and makes them feel worthy, even if it's only a hollow gesture, because they don't have anything else
I think that there are some worldwide belief systems with cultish elements that many people are falling for. Through them we are seeing much destruction. The most dangerous ones have long histories, with portions of truth interwoven and twisted in those systems.
Thank you for taking my request Dr, Grande. Whenever i see anything about Jim Jones it reminds me of a quote by Frank Herbert: [ All charismatic leaders ought to come with the warning label 'May Be Dangerous To Your Health'" ] - Frank Hebert, author of DUNE

Great video! Jones was always a interesting person when it comes to cults. I remember watching some stuff on the tv about him. I love when you do a mental health analysis about historical figures. Could you do a analysis on Hitler and Stalin?
I did research on this a few years ago and it made me cry to see and hear the footage. The poor babies!! I had a major emotional attack of some sort because i wanted to physically stop the madmen but couldn't.. This guy and his entourage were murderers of the worse kind.
I would like to hear Dr Grande's analysis of Yukio Mishima, the Nobel Prize-nominated author who committed suicide by seppuku after a failed military coup he envisioned himself leading. Mishima had a cult-like band of followers and showed signs of delusions and narcissism.
Jacob: Not exactly, it was not a failed coup, and he was planning to commit suicide all along. He did have a little private army, and a general was letting him use military grounds to train on. His plan was to have his followers hold the general hostage just long enough to give the real army troops a lecture about how Japan's army was losing its spiritual values. Then he would commit seppuku in traditional, but by then archaic, methods. After he would slit open his belly, one of his followers would cut his head off. Things mostly went as planned, but the Army members heckled him during his whole speech. And the guy cut his head off was not good at it and slashed his shoulder first. After that, the others in the group let the general go and surrendered to the police in order to go on trial and explain the motives for the crime, all of which had been planned. It is a sad story, Mishima was a genius as a writer and talented in many other areas as well, But he had the ideology of a Fascist, and was also gay. He had a horror of getting old and did not want to live past 40, and that was the age he was when he did his final act.
I was in my twenties then, so I remember this sad story pretty well. The only detail I think you may have missed is that 33 people, maybe more, survived, most by escaping through the jungle. They refused to drink the grape Flavor Aid. Two people who were in the camp during the slaughter survived; one woman hid under her bed and an elderly man slept through the carnage.
I was 10. I remember thinking at the time that surviving that madness would only be a little better than dying in it. Didn't one of his kids survive, gone playing basketball in town, or something? 😬
TUCK: I don't know. I remembered that some people escaped through the jungle, but I was vague on the details, so I Googled it and there's plenty of info available, including several free docs on UA-cam. The woman who survived by hiding under her bed lived into her nineties, I think, and she was frequently interviewed about Jonestown throughout her life. I think the survivors carry and are, themselves, important parts of the story.

I don't think Grande wants to be stalked, harassed, or doxxed, though it'd be great. I've studied Hubbard at length and I believe he was a narcissist at least. Very messed up dude, part of his founding scientology was to find a cure with his own struggles.
I just hope whomever is watching this does not try to connect this cult behavior to religion. As they typically say, the proof is in the action. This man obviously had mental health issues, as well as a swollen ego, added to drug and alcohol abuse. Now, no real church will ever have sinless/perfect people in it, but the leadership won’t ever push beliefs that contradict what God has shown us in the Bible. Great analysis as usual! Love this channel! You’ve definitely earned another subscriber!! ☝️
Exactly. You have to know the difference. People like Jim Jones was sent by satan. As an attempt to turn people away from God. To destroy the kingdom of God.

"He then came up with this conspiracy theory that the government was trying to destroy Indianapolis with a nuclear weapon." Judging by the size of the potholes on the interstate around Indianapolis, he might have been right about that one
It took us getting a whole new mayor for the decades old potholes to be fixed. You guys need to get it in the media & keep it in the media! Put pressure on your politicians. That’s the only way it will get fixed. Back in 2006-2007 I didn’t know one person who didn’t have to get their car fixed at least twice a year from “damage by pothole”. They also caused some really serious accidents!

I don't get involved in large group think, or follow one pied piper. I guess you can say Jim Jones taught me how to march to my own drummer.
Hello no disrespect to your comment but most peoples would not join a cult willingly it’s something that happens slowly over time he was a good man at first but as he changed the church changed he did not even believe in god later it was said he was an atheist but he used religion to bring people together and control them it was way to late once they found out
I remember reading something about this in my Guinness World Records book back in the late 90s and my gosh that image and description in it was so awful that it stayed in my mind for 24 years.
You tastefully brought levity to this tragedy that many people in San Francisco were once or twice removed from. I knew someone who worked with a lady who was a part of this cult. The lady had 2 dresses and ate rice for lunch; everything else went to Jones. Another person I knew answered an ad for a car. The seller was going to Jonestown. This creeped out the person I knew and he passed on the car. Jones had the politicians in SF in the palm of his hand. One word from Jones, the entire congregation voted for the politician. The tape of Jones urging parents to poison their children is terrifying and heartbreaking. Your gallows humor and scientific perspective is on point but still sensitive towards the victims of Jonestown, especially in naming this tragedy as a mass homicide.
He went from good and not perfect, to bad and renowned, then finally the worst drug addict psychopath, leading people to a death trap! Very enlightening and scientific approach to Jim Jones. Good video👍
Thank you for clarifying the distinction between Kool Aid, as referenced colloquially, and Flavor Aid, the actual cohort in the massacre. Heinz Kraft Foods continues to receive unfair negative publicity for their brand because some TV anchors in 1978 were too lazy to vet their copy.
Well, if you look at early footage of Jonestown, there are shots of actual Kool-Aid, so it appears that they DID have BOTH Kool- & Flavor-Aid. At the end of the day, Flavor-Aid is just a knock-off of Kool-Aid, so what difference does it really make?
My mom told me about this one time. A few years ago I was watching TV, and a documentary about this came on Channel 13. It was sad. It was scary. There is ANYTHING wrong with having a relationship with God and Christ whatsoever. For those that actually read the Bible. God warns us to be careful about people like him. God tells us that there will be false prophets, and that we have to use discernment and Godly wisdom in order to stay away from people like this. These are wolves in sheep clothing.

I have a question: Why is mothers killing their children object of joking, while 13, 14 y.o. teens in puberty full sexually aware having sex with powerful people are described as "heinous crimes", by this person? I am kinda starting to lose trust into this youtuber.
Dr. Grande, your dry, quiet humor keeps these videos about truly ghastly acts - and, sometimes, hideous people - in a tolerable perspective, and dilutes their toxic intensity to a palpable dose. Your videos and your style are refreshing, illuminating, and riveting. Thank you for all your good work.
Thank you for a great video. You shared information I hadn’t heard before, despite seeing many documentaries about Jonestown. Also, your deadpan humor is hilarious!! I love the way you sound so serious when telling a joke.
Excellent summary of this case. I have read much on Jim Jones, including Tim Reiterman's book Raven, as well as Deborah Layton's book (Larry's sister). The case with the missing boy is odd--Grace Stoen, his mother, was labeled a 'defector'. I think it shows such an example of gaslighting and narcissistic abuse on a grander scale. Not to mention I was 2 when this happened, so I vaguely remember adults speaking about it for a few yrs afterwards. Funny, dry humor as well!

There are still people like this out there. I raised my children in a small group with a leader i would describe being a mix of Jones and Koresh. Too many similarities. We escaped 18 years ago, and have been trying to heal every since. After they kidnapped my boys, we were able to get them back and never returned. Thank you for your video. These people still exist out there. More information needs to be out there to help others. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get the help and education to open eyes, understand what has happened, and how to heal. It has been 18 years and just now, this year, understanding and healing. Thank you.
I remember the gist of this series of events so your assessment interested me. It clarified a number of questions such as why anyone would be daft enough to join a cult and why remain. Brainwashing exists everywhere but fortunately not like this. Phew! Thanks for this video Dr Grande.
Dr. Grande, your dry humor is causing a drought in my neck of the woods! 🤣🤣🤣 This was a fsscinating study, I learned much. I was a teenager at the time of the massacre, this case has always intrigued me.
August 78 Jones had a fungal lung infection and a constant fever of 103-104 degrees. He was literally cooking his brain at that point. They kept urging Jim to go to Georgetown and get medical help but he refused knowing if he left Jonestown he'd be arrested on the spot.
I'm binge watching, it's great. I've seen movies and documentaries about Jim Jones, but getting into the mind of this guy is incredible!! Go Dr.Grande! Your humor mixed in with your thoughts are so funny.
I knew a young man who had been a member of his cult and did not follow them to JonesTown. He was a terrible emotional mess over it. Even before the KoolAid he was guilt ridden because he had 'failed' Jim Jones. he would cry all the time and we ( the others who lived in the building) finally got him to see a therapist and go back to his own real family, He was still a mess. He came back to see us about a year later,. the word,"fragile" is the best I can describe him on a good day. That was many years ago and I have often wondered if he managed to hang on long enough to fully recover.

Highly appreciate the topic - I don't share your perspective on this matter though. I read Deborah Laytons' book "Seductive Poison" about her life in the People's Temple a few years ago and it is very different to how you present this case. (I can recommend to read this book to everyone who - like me - is interested in the dynamics of cults). Cults often base on the high ideals, aims and values of the people who commonly work for their utopia - and often fail horribly. Then they get laughed at by people who lack fantasy, depth, ideals and personality. There's no place for arrogance and talking down about this sort of human tragedy. Arrogance only shows own limitations. These things often happen to the best and kindest of all people. You make good, and valid points though , unknown by me, about the personality of it's leader, something that I respect.

Me too. "The handbook" comment... It"s fascinating - the similarities that some of these cases have.
Lisa Cook L. Ron would be a great person for Dr. Grande to “examine”.

@@privatehobbydetective4561
A delusion is an idiosyncratic belief or impression that is firmly maintained despite being contradicted by reality or rational argument. Religiosity may be a socially accepted delusion, but it is still a delusion. People being offended by this- though, imo they really should not be, especially if they are making the choice to "believe"- does not negate this.

those desperate for recognition, affection and/or a sense of purpose. think of love (familial, platonic, romantic, whichever) as a fundamental human need similar to how we need oxygen. when a person is deprived of oxygen, they'll look for anything that will fill their lungs, even if it's toxic. likewise, if a person is starved of love, they'll turn to anyone who recognizes them and makes them feel worthy, even if it's only a hollow gesture, because they don't have anything else

Not to mention, Dr. Grande said many of the members were people who had problems with crime and drugs.

Jones was always a interesting person when it comes to cults. I remember watching some stuff on the tv about him.
I love when you do a mental health analysis about historical figures. Could you do a analysis on Hitler and Stalin?
I listened to the recordings from the tapes that were recovered from Jonestown (they are on UA-cam) and they are pretty darn disturbing.
Mishima had a cult-like band of followers and showed signs of delusions and narcissism.
that would be amazing... he remains an extremely bizarre figure even now
Good one! Hope he does dig on that case. Sounds interesting!
I've been intrigued by that guy for years.Seems like he had a Saint Sebastian complex among other things.Didn't he commit suicide via seppuku on film?
Very interesting 🧐
I can remember when the Guyana tragedy was all over the news. Even after all these years I'm still shocked when I hear about it again.
"That's one appt you don't want to see on your calendar if you're an optometrist" Lmao!
TUCK:
I don't know.
@@JohnPaul-le4pf Absolutely. I was glad to read here that they continued meeting. I hope that helped them reintegrate their bizarre experiences with the reality they returned to, and build a more authentic version of the community Jones had faked/twisted.... 🙏🕯

A descent into exploitative chaos and murder, what a hideous mess this man caused. Thank you Dr Grande!
I'm surprised they carried on making the stuff I would have renamed it
You just keep coming up with better and better offerings. The people want to know the psychological analysis and we really appreciate your expertise

Absolutely loving your humour 🥰😊Great upload as always 👌🏻👍🏻❤️
I was 14 when this happened. I remember reading Time magazine about the deaths. I was horrified. I had to talk to my Pastor about it. This led to my weird interest in cults. This and,the Manson Murders. Why ppl blindly follow...fascinating and, disturbing stuff.
I was 10. I now work in trauma recovery, attachment impacts, and violence outcomes, and entertain myself w/ Dr. G's videos on serial killers. Coincidence? 🤔... 😉
The dry humor of Dr Gande alone could have quenched Jim's incendiary eyes, like a halon extinguisher!
