  • George Washington (1732 - 1799 AD) was one of a group of remarkable men who lived in the American Colonies in the late eighteenth century. Although not as pugnacious as John Adams, as imaginative as Benjamin Franklin or as brilliant as Thomas Jefferson, Washington had the capacity to lead, in war and in peace. He led the Continental Army to victory against extraordinary odds, and by so doing he led his country to independence.

Also this just makes the whole situation quite ironic, considering how Washington himself have said “I did not depose King George the III to become King George the I”.

I'm sorry, but either you are trolling or you have no idea what you're talking about. George Washington did everything possible to avoid a war with either Britain or France (and, coincidentally, John Adams followed the same policy as well after Washington). Adams even ended up losing reelection because he did not pursue a war with France, which would have been popular at the time.

Well Anke, your A- was not earned through actual understanding of the complexities of history. That state of non-AP US History classes is deplorable, but that's beside the point.
Prior to World War II, American colonial efforts were aggressive and by no means in pursuit of peace. I think General Smedley Butler of the United States Marine Corps put it best.
"I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."
The United States is just another Western power with a history of moral ambiguity and imperialism. We are not evil, but do not try and pretend we are good.

I have an A- in American History right now. The only time between that war that wasn't trying to have full peace was the Civil War, in which we fought ourselves, other than that though we didn't roll around on anyone. You need to stop being so narrow minded and only say what is the truth now. US has only been in 6 Wars excluding the middle-east ones because I don't even know how many that counts as.
