The Bronstein-Larsen Variation is a dubious, but aggressive and double-edged way for black to fight in the Caro-Kann.

Despite being positionally unsound according to the engines, the Bronstein-Larsen Variation of the Caro-Kann offers great attacking chances when played properly and energetically. When humans are playing chess (especially people under 2300-2400) the fact that one side had + or - 0.5-0.9 in the opening means nothing. What matters is understanding the opening plans and ideas and knowing which squares your pieces should develop to, what’s your common attack plan and which side you are going to castle. Player who knows that can seldom have a disadvantage despite what the engines might say.
The Bronstein-Larsen Variation starts after the moves:
    1. e4 c6
    2. d4 d5
    3. Nc3 dxe4
    4. Nxe4 Nf6
    5. Nxf6+ gxf6 - Black recaptures towards the center, weakening his king and doubling his pawns, but opening the g file to his advantage in exchange. Taking with the e pawn is the Korchnoi variation.

The Korchnoi variation of this line with exf6 has become a weapon of choice for top GM’s. Black is scoring incredibly well in this line with O-O and the H5 H6 push, pointing all the bishops at the white kingside and trying to checkmate white.

Thanks a lot for your instructive videos. Especially on the Scandinavian, Carokann! They help me a lot.

Excellent video. I'm a beginner who plays the Caro Kann which oftens leads to cramped positions for Black. This variation could be fun, at least in blitz.

Yup, great for blitz! Not as good in standard:)

I think people should not trust engines so much. If you play what you feel confident in you will mostly be fine. Fortune favours the brave. Take GM Simon Williams he beat Anand with the Dutch Defence. I wish I watched this earlier because when I decided to play this variation in an hour long game, I blundered a knight, but because I was in highly tactical and razor sharp positions, I ended up winning that game. If you blunder a piece play like Tal, he would give pieces away even if there might not have been a successful attack. So, in conclusion, don't be afraid to take a risk.

Did you get a chance yet to test OTB play of this variation?
    1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5
    3. Nc3 dxe4
    4. Nxe4 Nf6
    5. Nxf6+ gxf6
    6. c3 h5
    7. Nf3 h4
    8. h3 Qd5
The simple 9. c4 looks like a pretty natural move for White, I think. But, the engines don't give it as the first choice

I played this with white in blitz. Not in standard. I think this is bad for black. H5, h4 is too risky in my opinion. And 9. c4 is a waste of time, even though it's a tempo gain seemingly. I think developing your bishop to d3 or to e2 should be a priority. C4 also weakens the d4 pawn too much and you are going to have a central weakness for the rest of the game. Hope this helps:)

I agree that it's bad for black. But, that is why I was wondering if you had dared to play it OTB :)

Hey in your video you said you’re going to try out this variation. Did you post any game with it?
I wonder if you know the little book: dynamic chess openings by R Keene. GM. 1982. He helped prepare Korchnoi for the world championship.
Very interesting read. There he highly recommends the bronstein Larsen variation for black against d4.
