4 Ways to Attack the Caro-Kann

  • Attacking the Caro-Kann is not easy. These are the setups for white I fear the most, and I avoid entering them if I can. I've been playing the Caro-Kann since I started playing chess, but there are still some variations I hate playing against and don't do well against no matter how well prepared I am.
I've played all four positions from the video in actual tournament chess otb and had mixed success, so I can say from personal experience, that these four attacking setups will be very hard for any Caro-Kann player to deal with.

    00:50 Grischuk's Piece Sacrifice (Panov Caro-Kann)
    06:48 Bayonet Attack (Advance Caro-Kann)
10:45 The Fantasy Pawn Sacrifice (Fantasy Variation)

In the Tal variation of the caro-kann there is an alternative move to Bd3 which is Bg5. This move is the second most popular move and scores much better for white (59% as opposed to 51% on the Lichess players database and on the Lichess Masters database it scores 49% win rate for white as opposed to 37% win rate for white with Bd3) But the engine line is e4, c6, d4, d5, e5, Bf5, h4, h5, Bg5, Qb6, Bd3, Qxd4, Nf3, Qg4, Bxf5, Qxf5, c4. It is minus 0.5 according to the engine but has only been played 2412 times as opposed to 171385 games played with 5.Bg5.

Actually if you let the engine run even in that line, it will say more or less 0.00

Interesting selection. I also play the Caro-Kann (e.g. 2300 Lichess Standard).
Against #1 my reco would be to avoid the drawish endgame variation (and Grischuks dangerous sacrifice) and go for the very well scoring sideline 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. c4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Nf3 Be6 or 6. Bg5 Be6. It’s blacks best scoring reply in move 6 e.g. in the Lichess master database and leads to structures which the white Panov player will usually not be familiar with.
    #3 can be avoided in different ways. You mention in the video that you play 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. f3 Qb6 and I assume you go for the open positions after 4. Nc3 dxe4 5. fxe4 e5 6. Nf3 exd4 7. Nxd4 after which black usually plays Bc5 or Nf6. By the way: Nd7 is an interesting option. Most players will not find the strongest move 8. Ndb5 but even if they do I personally would be willing to go for something like 7. Nxd4 Nd7 8. Ndb5 Ngf6 9. Nd6+ Bxd6 10. Qxd6 Qc5 11. Bf4 Qxd6 12. Bxd6 Ng4 13. Be2 Nge5 14. O-O-O f6. White has the bishop pair and the Bd6 is great, but black has an equally strong Ne5 and can play against whites isolated pawn.
#2 and #4 do not affect me because I play 3. … c5 instead of Bf5 but I understand the concerns. I also did not like the variations with white pawn storms on the kingside.
Two lines which I dislike althoug they are objectively speaking ok for black but leave no room for little mistakes are
    1) In the Bf5 mainline the sacrifice which Tal played against Botvinnik in one of their world championship matches: It is hard to avoid that line which goes 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nh3 Nf6 8. Nf4 Bh7 9. Bc4 e6 10. O-O Bd6 11. Nxe6 fxe6 12. Bxe6 Nbd7 13. Re1 Qc7
    2) And much simpler: The Steiner attack after 1. e4 c6 2. c4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. cxd5 Nf6 5. Qa4+ Nbd7 6. Nc3

What about the main main line, the Short variation? Has no one given you a hard time with that one? I think its advantage requires extreme patience and precision for white to maintain. I personally play the Fantasy though.

@@marcofrey2903 I have not thought much about the Short-variation in the Bf5 advance Caro-Kann: I already disliked the sharp variations against Bf5 and play therefore 3. ... c5

  • @Nimzowitz

Awesome! My go to weapon against the Caro is the Tal with an early c4. It throws people off, because usually Caro players want a quiet position. If I go for c3, I just get a passive position. With c4, you just take on d5, and they don't have their pawn triangle anymore 😀 I've lost a game where I lose the f5-square for their bishops and knights. So I usually play Ne2-g3 to control that, or just trade bishops with Bd3. I struggle with c5 against the Advanced, although white should be better there.

i know it is not relevant to this vid, but it is relevant to the chanel. i really loved the deep dive you made about the english opening, however, i wish you would produce content about 1.c4-e5, and the 1.c4-c5, as these are the most common lines. thank you very much for the brilliant hanging pawns chanel.

My least favorite line when I play the Caro is Tal’s novelty against the Botvinnik-Carls variation in the advance variation. e4 c6 d4 d5 e5 c5 dxc5 e6 Qg4! White now threatens to take on g7 if the pawn is recaptured and with the bishop stuck guarding g7, it is hard (especially if unprepared) to find a continuation that solves black’s problems. The engine line does not make any sense to me as a human and Tal won a few games that made his opponents look like amateurs with all their pieces tied to each other.

    • @Epikur63
      @Epikur63 5 місяців тому

      As long as there is a bishop on f8 you can chase the queen away e.g. 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. dxc5 e6 5. Qg4 h5 6. Qg3 h4 7. Qg4 Nh6 8. Bxh6 Rxh6. It is a little bit nasty if the white queen waits until you take on c5 e.g. after 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. dxc5 e6 5. a3 Bxc5 6. Qg4 black can play Ne7 and is objectively fine, but it is also not my cup of tea to play stuff like 7. Qxg7 Ng6. The solution is not to take on c5 as long as the white queen can move to g4 e.g. 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. dxc5 e6 5. a3 Nc6 6. Nf3 Bxc5. You can check it in the Lichess opening tree. It is important to challenge the pawn on e5 after the main development moves with f6 e.g. 7. b4 Bb6 8. Bb2 Nge7 9. Bd3 Ng6 10. O-O O-O 11. Re1 f6. White may try to crack your center after taking on f6 and you get a few weak squares but space advantage and free piece play e.g. 12. exf6 gxf6 13. c4 Nf4 14. Bf1 dxc4 15. Nbd2 c3 16. Bxc3 e5. You will find in the Lichess database a few games whih have been played by Peter Schmalz. These are quite recent correspondence games (means massive engine validation) which he all drawed. In other words: This line holds even with perfect play from white.

I myself used to play the tal variation, but after losing a lot of games I know play the Panov_Botvinik, and the Grischuk variation, the endgame is drawn but easy to mess up, especially in Rapid games; However, I also had winning position in the Grischuk variation as Black usually play Rd8 or tries to keep the extra piece which results in a mating attack for white. it is difficult to traverse the variation in fast formats therefore I suggests to go for Qxb5 line instead of Grischuks Qc5+ line.

It's crazy that we live in the age of computers and yet so many of these lines are super rare, or are played inaccurately. For example, in the Bayonet attack, Stockfish gives 4...Be4! and the few top level games show that it's a promising continuation for black. Have you checked out this line?

    My favourite weapon against caro kann now is (1.e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5 3. d3)
The idea is to either get nice endgame (3... d5xe4 4. d3xe4 Qxd1 5. Kxd1) or better two knigts (3... Bg4 4.h3 Bxf3 5. Qxf3 and there is no ... Bb4 becayse lack of the knight on c3) and the real fun begins if white retreat the bishop 4. h3 Bh5 5. g4! Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Ne5 Bh7 8. g5 and I believe that white can get here really good initiative with mate threats or can even sack a knight on f7.

It should be noted that these attacks are very specific. Black must play into most of these. In other words, you must also be content with your chosen opening's myriad other viable variations. For example, the line you give in the Fantasy is quite rare. There is a similar sacrifice for white in the Qb6 lines but there are other sound ways for black to play that white must enjoy, or be willing to go in for. Still, the Fantasy remains my choice even if at the highest levels it merely equalizes. It asks black many questions and also affords white flexibility. There are often several sidelines for white, giving black an even bigger headache when preparing. Even in the main line with e5, white can go Bd3 rather than Bc4 which is just as good if not better than the main line; it's more positional. Black does have some more modern approaches that Stockfish has introduced but I won't mention them here at my peril : )
