  • In this video, we ride on the S45 Vorortelinie, a convenient, yet very historic railway line connecting the Western districts of my home-city Vienna. On the way, we learn about the fascinating history of this railway, covering it’s original construction as part of the Vienna Stadtbahn, its gradual decline after the 2nd world war, as well as the amazing efforts to revive and enhance this line as part of the Vienna S-Bahn since the 1980s.
    I’m also going to take you on a tour around one the stations, Hernals, which was designed by the architect and city planner Otto Wagner, who is famous for his decorative Jugendstil buildings.
    Welcome to my UA-cam channel TSF Transport, a channel all about public transport in Austria and beyond! If you enjoy my video, don’t forget to give it a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel!

    Great thanks to Franz Meneder for providing me with lots of historic footage of the reopening of the Vorortelinie in the 1980s!

    Thanks for watching my exploration of Vienna’s charming S45 Vorortelinie! What do you think makes this railway line unique? 🤔 Have you taken the S45 before, or do you have any favourite spots along the route? Share your experiences or thoughts in the comments!👇 Also, let me know if there are other routes or stations in Vienna you’d like me to cover next! 🚉✨

      Ehrlich gesagt würde mich die Marchegger Ostbahn interessieren, aber zum derzeitigen Stand der Dinge wissen wir ja alle, natürlich mich eingeschlossen, recht wenig. 😭😭

      What happanned to the station baumgarten on the stadtbahn. On the Plan there is a station baumgarten. But today you drive from penzing straight to hütteldorf. In between there is a station baumgarten. What happened to it? Where was it?

    Coming to.the S45 reopening then is like coming to the u2 reopening again, and when the u5 opens, we will have many fans at the stations

    I love the S45. I lived along the line nearly my whole life. In my current apartment, I can even see the tracks and use the line more times a week. A lot of journeys would be so much more inconvenient without it.

    Thanks for your video!
    0:35 That tone! I was half-expecting the remaining two-tones, as in the old rolling stock for S-Bahn Berlin 😅
    I discovered S45 while examining the physical traces left behind by architect Otto Wagner, and I travelled a lot on the U4 and U6. My favourite S45 stations to stop for a look are Hütteldorf, Ottakring, and Heiligenstadt. I also really like the bridge-viaducts, and a recent find just north of Hernals station is at Richthausenstrasse (on which the footage of your trip shows up at 12:31). It's clear how important S45 is to Viennese commuters, unthinkable now if service were to be reduced or eliminated. IMO that points (and anticipates with future growth in districts 21. and 22.) to demand for travel around the city's periphery without transferring anywhere close to the city centre. While I'm likely biased by time spent on Berlin's S41-S42 Ringbahn, I'm about to watch your video about plans for Vienna's own Ringbahn.

    When you show Vienna to train enthusiasts, this is a great starter. The Vienna Ring would be possible even when trains have to change directions in Hütteldorf.

    Lots of very interesting information about this popular S-Bahn line in Vienna. I can remember how it looked before its comeback. I like all the historic photo & video material you could include - thanks!

    Thank you for this video, I've learned some things about the line that I've lived by since moving to Vienna 3 years ago. I didn't knew about the former stations Unter-Döbling and Baumgarten, even though I lived in this area. Now I live near the Station Penzing and I've noticed that there was a former Station called Baumgarten. Do you know if there is anything remaining from this former station?

    • @TSFTransport
      @TSFTransport  Місяць тому

      No, I don't think there's anything that still remains from Baumgarten station. What I do know though is that there are plans to build a second track for the S45 between Penzing and Hütteldorf which will also include the construction of a new station again at Baumgarten again. Should happen at some point during the 2030s.

    What height are the platforms? Is there Level boarding with the newer trains?

    do you think the line past oberlaa will ever reopen to passengers?

    • @TSFTransport
      @TSFTransport  Місяць тому +1

      At the moment it looks unlikely it will, but I do think it would have potential. I have another S-Bahn Ring video (Part 2) planned for January, where I will also talk about the larger ring variants via Oberlaa.

    0:55 does anyone know what creates those sci-fi-blaster sounds? I've known them for a long time in another station, and the only similarity is the curved rail.

    • @ex101jc
      @ex101jc 3 місяці тому +3

      It‘s the straight bogeys hitting the curved rail, which naturally doesn‘t go without some friction. In Star wars they actually made the blaster sounds by hitting a metal rope with a wrench.

    • @robertheinrich2994
      @robertheinrich2994 3 місяці тому +1

      @@ex101jc it's just that the sound appears way before the train enters the station.
      thank you for your explanation.
