  • Plans to build a Vienna S-Bahn Ring have existed for decades, but so far this concept has never been implemented. But does Vienna actually need a S-Bahn Ring Line? And what would the benefits of a S-Bahn Ring be?
In this video, we explore the background story of the Vienna S-Bahn Ring project. We will also take a peek at the S-Bahn Ring in Berlin, which has already existed since 1877. And last but not least, I will show you the current plans for the S-Bahn Ring and share my personal opinion on these.

As someone living along the s80 I agree that your proposal is definitely much better than the official one, I often have to travel up to western vienna somewhere along the s45 and having to transfer in hütteldorf makes everything take at least 15 minutes longer, which would be gained by doing this

Very interesting. The public transport system in Vienna offers a really high standard, but as mentioned in the video the connection from the west of Vienna to the south can be rather awkward. A better connection there would definetly reduce extremely heavy traffic in the south of Vienna, like on the Triester Straße. Thanks for looking at the history of that idea more closely!

what would be the effect, if you make an almost s-bahn-ring? it starts at handelskai, follow the track of S45 until penzing, but then divert from the track to speising and continue on the track of S80 until erzherzog-karl-straße. then go straight ahead and add a few stations. right befor zentralstellwerk süßenbrunn, there is a loop that can divert a train to leopoldau, where it meets the U1 terminal station. from there, continue on the line back to floridsdorf, and over the danube back to handelskai.
the only difference: now, the train is one floor higher and at 90° angle.
it could be prolonged to hauptbahnhof, where it terminates and reverses. or continue to meidling, turning it into something like a "vorortebrezel" instead of a "vorortering".

Well, the advantage of the "almost ring" is you could have a through connection from the western districts to Meidling and Hbf, but on the eastern side you would still prioritise the corridor to Aspern Nord (because on that side of the city you reach more people by having a direct link to Stadlau and Aspern rather than Donaumarina and Reichsbrücke). Yeah the line up to Süßenbrunn should definitely also be reactivated (and it is planned in the Zielnetz 2040). While I would doubt the meaningfullness of a "Vorortebrezel", it would definitely be a unique quirk ifVienna had something like this (that I'm sure many tourists would laugh about) ;D

I still think, that it was a mistake to name the U5 as U5. I want aU8.
why? because tourists shouldn't just ask for the U5, they should also aks for the U7.
    ;-)

Haha! I think there was even a petition once to call the new U-Bahn line the U7 rather than U5. Was it maybe you who started the petition? ;D (although probably not, otherwise it would be to call it the U8)
