Design boards are game changers! I made one using the tutorial from Sew Yeah and best tip was from a commenter on that video: use T Pins in the sides of the boards to hold the fabric in place as you wrap it around the back (don't remove them after you hang the board) -- the T Pins will stay in place on the sides vs. pins/tacks you try to use on the front to hold the wadding/fabric. Look forward to seeing what you have on the board in a future video!
Hi Rachel. Oh my stars I think you did an amazing job on your project board. I must admit you had me chuckling!! You handled it like a trooper. The outcome was beautiful. I went years without one and now I wouldn't know how to act without one. Such a handy tool when making a large quilt.
Rachel, you are such a trooper. I would have got in a strop in the beginning & called my husband in to help. However, it was really worth you persevering as the result is great. Good idea to put a "Stitch With Rachel" banner up like a true influencer. 😉😘
Kate Jackson at the Last Homely House used fabric called “bump” (curtain lining) instead of wadding. She has used it for years and she says it works a treat
I so enjoyed watching you put together your design wall. Thank you for including us in the process. I have been thinking of putting a board on my wall, with hooks to hold all my cutting mats and rulers. This has given me ideas!! xx
These best thing to cut the polystyrene is a bread knife or electric carving knife. It was good to see that you had issues people often edit them out. It keeps it real, not that I’m glad you had them. I think you get the polystyrene that’s covered in something (I think it’s paper) which might be easier. It turned out well despite the problems you had with it.
I love this so much! Well done on persevering, especially by yourself! I wish I had the wall space for this but I don't...maybe I need a Sheshed out back 😂
The Gypsy Quilter sells a large piece of felt designed just for a design board for about $40..sorry don't know the £ difference as I'm in the USA. Felt is much nicer than batting/ wadding because you can just roll a sticky brush over it to take off all of the loose threads that love to stay on it. Cotton batting if you can't find felt. It doesn't come apart wuth tension as much as polyester 😊
Great idea! Now your quilting can also double as artwork. I recently watched Di at Sister Chicks Quilts do a temporary design wall of fabric and batting (wadding) that could be folded and stored easily. Then hung on a wall with command hooks. That might be my solution until I get a permanent sewing area.
I got the white to make my quilt wall just need to get polystyrene board. I think Lowe’s hardware has it. I got interested in it on the last homely house, Kate has one and she has told use what we needed. I can’t wait to get mine up. It is a game changer. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on your new design board. It looks great! I have an empty wall that could be ideal for a design board. I need to visit my local hardware store soon! Thank you for the inspiration and motivation!
Rachel, you are sew inspiring! I have two design walls in my sewing space and I love them. I used insulation board as well, however I covered them with car headliner in an ecru color as suggested by kaffe Facuet. Fabric adheres beautifully and doesn't collect all the little fibers as white. Something to consider for the future.
Yeah if I put blocks on there individually, they stick. But once joined together, they need pinning. Which is fine. It's just nice to have somewhere to put your quilt whilst you are designing it 💖
Great video! Love how you are so honest about the struggle to put it together. ❤
It seems to me that the most interesting videos include someone overcoming obstacles. I loved your video ❤

Could you hear how out of breath I was aswell 🤣 it was a good workout for sure. Thank you for watching 💖
Well done! You will really enjoy that! You’re a SuperSHEro for tackling that solo and conquering it brilliantly!

🤣 I did phone him and say "Where's the staple gun... its an emergency" 🤣🤣 he knew not to even ask what type of emergency. Thank you! 💖
You will find this so useful for your quilt creations. It didn’t look a favourable task, but I bet that you’re glad it’s done.
Oh absolutely!
Great job on the design board.
It looks great!
Now you have plenty of space to design your quilts.
Enjoy! 😊
My daughter made her wall with white flannel. It works great!
Great job all by yourself 😊 it’s funny I was just talking with my husband about helping with making one for me! You were reading my mind! lol 😊

That is the only thing I'm missing now that I've tided my area, some hooks for ruler. Thank you for watching 💖
Thanks for sharing. Hope you enjoy your wall and it works for you ❤️

Absolutely, and a half finished project having on the wall will keep me motivated to finished rather than tucked away in a drawer
Great job! Loved seeing your squares! I just got my book yesterday and it is grand! Thanks for the intro to all that is Alice!!! Jean Colorado USA
i have one there are awesome
A flannel sheet is nice and grippy for the covering.
I found it difficult to find flannel in the UK, I found brushed cotton sheets but not in the colour I wanted
You can buy super king flannel fitted sheets for beds !
❤
Well done. 👏👏👏👏❤️🌺
U S Army Slogan works “Improvise, Adapt and Overcome”. Great Job!!

Rachel, you did great. It's not an easy job for one person. Enjoy your design wall! ❤

Your design board looks great! But, you are right - definitely a 2 person job!!

Thank you! It's a great tool to have in your sewing room
Great job!

That's such a good idea! I'll keep that in mind if I need or want to replace the fabric, and I'll definitely make sure my partner is home 🤣
you often have to use pins even if you have proper fabric to stick it to
Yeah if I put blocks on there individually, they stick. But once joined together, they need pinning. Which is fine. It's just nice to have somewhere to put your quilt whilst you are designing it 💖
I was just wanting wadding on mine so the blocks stick to it without pins easy to move then around for designing
Curious if theres an issue with the audio on this video in parts?
I’d have taken that wadding straight back to the shop, it’s rubbish.
I was so tempted!
