This is my favorite single piece of writing in all Tolkien's legendarium. So epic and exciting yet full of pathos and tragedy. Finrod was brother to Galadriel and arguably even wiser and more virtuous but he was outmatched in his duel with Sauron. Outmatched, and yet might've won by calling on the power of his elven kin, but for the doom which lay over them, that debt still unrepaid, caused by the slaying of their kin and the burning of their ships. Until this doom is lifted, they're doomed to fail. But is is the heroism of Finrod among others which leads to the noldor finding redemption, eventually

Finrod is Galadriel's brother, they both have fascinated themselves with the Word of Command, Will Power, or magic if that is how it is plainly said. Melian also trained Galadriel to mentally resist the mind control of Miars towards her. Melian, being a Miar herself has done exceptionally well because later in the 2nd and 3rd age of Arda, Sauron the dark Miar could not penetrate or perceive the Mind that is governing Lothlorien, in fact sauron couldn't see into Lothlorien just like Morgoth could not see Doriath, Melian's abode. And with the additional power of Nenya, one of the Elven ring of power which Celebrimbor has entrusted to Galadriel for keeping has proven extremely useful in preserving the Word of Command or yeah magic that is protecting The Golden Woods or Caras Ghaladon, the heart of Elvendom on Earth.

Sauron couldn't control Galadriel's mind because of the elven ring Galadriel had. The power of that ring was specialized on "preservation"! This was what protected Galadriel's mind against Sauron.

    • @dllps
      @dllps 8 місяців тому +2

@@_semih_ The mind powers came from Galadriel herself, Tolkien emphasizes her ability in the Silmarillion, she has always been a powerful telepath since was little, probably the mightiest non-ainu. What Nenya did was increase it, making Galadriel capable of not only defending herself, which she could do alone, but of penetrating Sauron's mind to some extent, as she was aware of everything Sauron thought regarding the elves. Of course, the miles of distance between the two also helped.
Now if Sauron reached the borders of Lothlorien, she would not be able to defend herself.

You mentioned that Sauron looks human which is really neat that you noticed. Sauron is a Mia, a powerful being from before the world (Arda) was created. Mia have the ability to appear however they wish, and, with the coming of the Elves (the First Born) many Mia took on the likeness of the Elves.
The obvious question then is why does Sauron not look like an Elf in the movies. Long story short, about three thousand years before the Lord of The Rings (but still long after the events surrounding this song), Sauron corrupts many of the Númenor, men from which Aragorn is a descendent. Sauron convinces the king of the Númenor to sail with a huge fleet into the West where they have been forbidden to go. The earth opens up and swallows the entire fleet. Sauron waits on the island where the Númenor live, but was not prepared for the huge waves that are caused when the earth opens up. The waves completely destroy the island killing Sauron's body. Sauron's spirit returns to Middle Earth, but can no longer take on any from.
Many of Númenor that were not corrupted by Sauron (known as the Faithful) survive because they had left the island of Númenor and settled in Middle Earth in places such as Osgiliath mentioned in the ToTR.

No actually he rebuilt his body after that with the power of the one ring obviously since Isildur cut off his fingers in the war of the last alliance. After that it took him very long to rebuild his body since he didn't have the ring, but he eventually made himself a body by the time of the war of the ring since in the book he tortures Gallum personally and is described to have only four finger on his hand. What he lost after the fall of Númenor was the ability of shape-shifting and also he stopped taking the form of handsome elves or men and instead took a more sinister look.

The Duel of Song is one of my favorite moments in the entire Silmarillion.
Another nice touch that you might have missed was that CDV included an echo of the Ring Verse in Black Speech at the end, connecting this moment as one of the key points in Sauron's journey to becoming the Dark Lord.

You're not far off in saying that the orc-disguise spell was "turning him evil". Tolkien notes in that part of the story of Beren and Lúthien that Finrod was having trouble keeping the disguise magic going, not only for himself but for Beren and his other companions. It's meant to be mentally taxing and tricky to keep consistent. When Sauron finds that group of orcs suspicious, he starts prying into the spell, and is surprised an orc starts singing in praise of elves. Finrod's trying to buy Beren and the others time to escape. Sauron likely knows that spells like that require a lot of effort, and he also catches Finrod off guard by reminding him of some of the crimes some of his particular elven people did in the past. That basically leads to Finrod getting his disguise blown and knocked unconscious. Finrod, Beren and their buddies are imprisoned, but refuse to reveal secrets to Sauron and Beren manages to eventually escape. It's interesting Tolkien thought of even magical disguises having limitations, especially psychological.

Too bad there is no song depict8ng that to be innthe likeness of these songs. Also would like to see some sort of song or even some good narrations of how Luthien kicked Saurons A$$ haha.

It’s more than that, Finrod had slipped up and Sauron was exploiting his guilt
Finrod is of the Noldor, but specifically he is of the house of Finarfin. He and his fellow Noldor slew the Teleri - another group of elves - to steal their ships and travel east from Valinor to Middle-Earth. However the Noldor of Feanor left Finarfin’s people behind on the helcaraxe - ice floes on the western shores of middle earth. Feanor and his sons burned their ships and left their fellow Noldor to die on the ice.
So at first, Sauron sings of betrayal and failure, which is not enough to sway Finrod. He is resolute with faith in his friends and his people, from which his “strength like a tower” comes.
However Finrod’s mistake is referencing the birds, the sea, and Valinor; he even has a moment of pity for Sauron, saying “Nai Hiruvalye Valimar,” which means “Maybe thou shalt find Valinor” or, in other words, maybe even Sauron could be forgiven and return home. To which Sauron responds “Romello Vanwa Valimar” - “Lost to those in the East is Valinor”. An admission of shame, but also a reference to the curse of Feanor, which all Noldor in Middle Earth bear: because they slew innocent Teleri, they are banned from Valinor (which is essentially Heaven).
And from here Sauron goes in, conjuring images of the “foamriders with white ships” who the Noldor slew, as well as the muttering ice of Helcaraxe. Once he learns Finrod is Noldor and pierces the orcish disguise, Sauron incites the fear of betrayal Finrod feels and, more painfully, the shame at being the betrayer, at taking part in the slaying of his own people, and so Finrod falls.
The battle is as much a battle of emotions as it is of words or magic. Sauron wins by employing his captive’s shame so that Finrod loses his will to fight.

@@bumfricker2487To be clear, Finrod himself did not take part in the Kinslaying, and neither did anyone from his House, the House of Finarfin. But by choosing to follow Feanor they still went against the will of the Valar, and the Doom of Mandos is still upon them. Finrod felt great shame about his fellow Noldor slaying their kin in Valinor, and Sauron used it to his advantage.

Finrod was with Beren under orc disguises. They were brought before sauron, and sauron fought with a song of power to strip his disguise. With all his strength, Finrod sang back an opposing song of power to keep his disguise. Sauron was the Victor, and finrods disguise was stripped away. So, I guess keep this in mind next time you listen to this. Or, since I'm half a year late, you know this already.

Finrod Felagund is the Brother of Lady Galadriel. He opposed the Oath Feanor and his sons swore to kill Morgoth (The Dark Lord before the Dark Lord Sauron...If Sauron is the Lord of Demons, Morgoth/Melkor would be Lucifer himself) and recover the Silmarils (Bright and beautiful gems that contained the light of the trees), but followed them back to Middle Earth anyway. He did not take part in the first Kinslaying (Where Feanor's folk slew elves for boats to cross the ocean), nor was he aware of it until later. He took the long route back to middle earth through the Arctic North, arriving in Middle Earth a while after Feanor's Kin did. He founded the original Minas Tirith (Not the one from the Lord of the Rings though) and then later befrended the Dwarves who helped him make the underground city of Nargothrond. He was the first Elf to discover and make contact with Second Born (the Race of Men), making lasting ties with them. Aragorn's Ring, The Ring of Barahir originally belonged to Finrod.
This takes place during the adventure of Barahir's Son, Beren. He had fallen in love with the Elf Princess Luthien, when the idea of Humans and Elves loving each other romantically had never happend before. Luthien's Father told Beren that he would only approve the match if Beren recovered a Silmaril for him. Beren went to Nargothrond to ask for help in this task, where Finrod agree to travel with him (Knowing it was his doom to die on this quest if I recall correctly...). Setting off, the Company disguised themselves as Orcs to sneak into the Lands of the Dark Lord, but were stopped at Tol-in-Gaurhoth ("The Wizard's Tower", which was formerly the Minas Tirith Finrod had built) by Sauron (Who was just Morgoth's Lieutenant). Sauron suspected something was up and brought them in, where he and Finrod dueled with Songs of Power. Sauron tricked Finrod into a Trap and captured them, but still didn't know who they were despite sensing that Finrod was an Elven Lord of great power. So, he began killing off the companions one by one, suspecting this was all Finrod's plan. When the wolves came to kill Beren, Finrod burst his chains and killed the Wolf, but not without taking lethal injury.

And for folks who know only the films, that ring Aragorn is wearing . . . it's Finrod's -- he gave it to Aragorn's far, far, far ancestor Barahir, father of Beren, 6000+ years before the LotR.
And after the battle with Sauron:
Sauron imprisoned them and one by one they were killed by werewolves until only Beren and Felagund were left, but none of the companions betrayed them. When the werewolf came to kill Beren, Felagund put forth all his power and burst his bonds. He wrestled with the werewolf, and slew it with his hands and teeth. Yet he himself was mortally wounded, and he died in the dark, in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, whose great tower he himself had built. Thus King Finrod Felagund, the fairest and most beloved of the house of Finwë, redeemed his oath.

The guy doing the reaction pretty much got the gist as the song went on but missed the context which would have increased his enjoyment. So go read the Silmarilion.
