The greatest love story ever. Tolkien fought at the Battle of the Somme in WW1 (One of the deadliest conflicts in human history) where he lost all but one of his closest friends who he knew since childhood. He eventually became sick and was put on army sick leave. His wife, Edith, moved near his hospital and together, they occasionally walked in a nearby forest, where she danced and sang for him in a Hemlock glade. That inspired the infamous meeting of Beren and Luthien. When Beren died, Luthien went to Halls of Mandos and sang a lament for Beren, Mandos was deeply moved by this and allowed them to live again... Now here comes the sad part. When Edith died, Tolkien wrote this in a letter to his son, here's an excerpt of the part that's absolutely heartbreaking: "But now the story has gone crooked, and I am left. And I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos."
It is said that even the longest known song is not the complete one as it causes too much grief for many elves. Especially the ones who knew her when she was alive. So they self censored so it would hurt less. Or rather weaved the words in a way that they could handle speaking about it. It wasn’t a taboo of sorts but it’s a touchy subject for elves for sure.

This is my favourite also knowing that Tolkien regarded his wife as his Luthien, he even had it engraved on this gravestones
Every time I hear her name, my heart is filled with joy. I think Mr Tolkien felt the same for Edith.
My favorite is the Song of Earendil by Clamavi. Pure epicness
The tale of Beren and Luthien is the best love story ever!
