You are not alone! AFI has a special place in my heart because they are always changing and are always experimenting with new sounds. In my opinion, this is what has allowed them to endure through all these years. I don't compare the old stuff with the new stuff. This new stuff is a culmination of 21 years of musical evolution. The timbre of Davey's voice constantly changes while still staying the same. I just love it.
This track got released right after I got my heart ripped out of my chest. Impeccable timing AFI! They've been there to sing the sorrow for me for more than a decade.
I didn't realize how much I've missed them. Everybody has their own favorite AFI era, I'm all about The Art of Drowning and Sing the Sorrow. This definitely has potential. I feel like autumn is coming back. And it's fucking awesome.
New sound but completely blown away by it. I love that Davey has brought back the gritty vocals. I hope there is more complexity on the album and less repetitiveness but fantastic single.
As 40 year old musicians go, I'm glad they've been able to accept themselves and their personal tastes so freely. For private individuals, they sure do wear their influences openly!
This is one band that always kept writing top quality music. they are so talented it blows my mind. if you do not like this you just can't understand the genius of pure talented music. pure hearted musicians.. this will be a MUST buy for me
i dont really care for this album but im loving the positive feedback its getting in the comment section, AFIs my favourite band and positive feedback means we might get a new album
19 people can't handle a band who's sound constantly evolves and changes but remains uniquely theirs. Their loss- this album is shaping up to be something very special, and I'm still proud to wear my DF tattoos with pride
This took me immediately back to Sing of Sorrow, but with so much more rough and raw attitude. This is what everyone hoped their newest work would be. They delivered and no one would dare say anything to complain!
With crash love I started to give up on AFI, Decemberunderground helped me out through so much in life, and i got so disappointed with their last album . Now that I've listened to this track, I've gained my faith back in AFI, keep rocking on, and give me a reason to believe.
This sounds dark and intense, like AFI is supposed to be... this song has gotten me even more stoked for a new album, One can only hope that all the songs will be this good.
Davey's lucky he's got a fan base that is willing to wait 10 years for his voice to come back. His man package is all over that track. So. Boss. Excited Like the Old Days!!!
Crash Love had some true gems (Torch Song, End Transmission, Cold Hands...) while still adequately marking AFI's evolution as a band. It was a new direction for them, which, as an artist, is to be respected. And, I know some of these weren't written for Crash Love, but the CL B-sides are some of the most fantastic AFI songs ever created.
I am so happy with this song. It sounds like their older stuff, which is what I love. I think they did a great job with it. Love it! Can't wait to hear more if the rest of the album is anything like this.
I'm so relieved to hear them mixing their old and new stuff into something like this. I love their older more than their newer material and finally hearing a dark tone again after all these years is just so pleasant. I'm buying this album the day it came out!...along with the next SOAD album...well if they "feel the time is right."
I love Very Proud of Ya, I love Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, I love Answer That and Stay Fashionable, I love Black Sails in the Sunset, I love The Art of Drowning, I love Sing The Sorrow, I love Decemberunderground, I love Crash Love, and I love this. Real fans stay true to the end. AFI is a genre in themselves. If you're unsatisfied, listen to On The Arrow. In that song, they tell you "No-one shines forever, they change with the weather" People change. Bands change. But AFI Forever.
I got that kind of a vibe too! The outro where the instrumentation fades and Davey elicits the 'I fucking suffered'.. Quite an emotionally visceral moment, especially when punctuated by the somber moments after and the punch of the drums beforehand.
AFI are the reason I got in to music and Davey is the reason I became a vocalist. This track fucking rules and the fact that the album comes out on my birthday makes me beyond excited. Thanks AFI!
If you hate this. Move on from this amazing band. This is there best thing ever. Big fan for a long time and this song just sticks in your head and is so good!
I don't think they ever sold out, and in everything they do you can always hear their roots pushing through, honestly I was happy with CrashLove and even this sounds good, it's an evolution on everything they've done.
I feel like I'm the only one who loved AFI through both their hardcore days and through their "sell out" days. I've always adored bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, so that may be why Decemberunderground made me just as happy as Black Sails and Art of Drowning did. That's what I love about AFI, they're always changing, and yet they still have that primary sound I can't explain. This is very different from previous albums and has a very cinematic sound to it, I enjoy it. The lyrics especially
He's done it before in plenty of instances. He's just always been very good at burying the curse words inside the piece so that instead of standing out they are such a part of the energy that they almost become invisible in the torrent of emotion.
Still blows my mind how AFI can almost totally change their sound every album and still be great. My favourite band since I first heard of them in ~'02.
I hoped it would remind me of Sing the Sorrow. It does, but it really stands alone as a new direction. Reminds me of 30 Seconds to Mars, but with Davey's amazing vocals and this hook, the chorus, it's all so beautiful and graceful. Dark beauty. I've been waiting so long. I'm just emotionally overwhelmed.
I have been a fan from day one and from listening to this i still am!!. I had no doubts this would be epic, cant wait to hear the album. Good job guys.
I understand you, though I love AFI for "Sing the Sorrow". That is such a jewel for me, and I embrace that album with my heart. But, I've grown to like all of AFI's, from their punk era, to the hardcore and horror stuff, to their more alternative and rock-pop approach. Truly geniuses on whatever they craft. They have the Touch of Midas. Long live A Fire Inside!
This single has the makings of an epic album !!! Davey has returned to his roots ( Sing the Sorrow) of describing pain and suffering from trusting a person in a loved relationship. AFI has had a very distinct progression with their music, and other side projects, but this single definitely alludes to a classic album
I loved STS, to me thats the best album they ever came out with, my heart goes out to Butch Vig who produced it. He died shortly after, to me STS was perfection in writing music. The clandestine short film led to so much anticipation, and the 337 mystery drove me wild for years. That to me was Daveys ode to music that was the storm within Daveys head and he put it out there for all of us to get a glimpse at. This anticipation for this album has the same feel to and I awe ecstatic for the result!
I had a feeling that finally this album would be the true successor to STS when they posted the first teaser video a few months back. That video showed that they were going back to the dark days and I must say with this song I feel more confident than ever we are finally getting the album we wanted.
yeah of course AFI was awesome in their older days but their new stuff is awesome as well. One of the many things I admire about them is the risks they take to try different sounds as a band. To do that successfully, that's talent. Yet, they always manage to have a dark tone as well. They never fail to impress me.
Well said. All these comments for YEARS of "They changed WTF happened?" It's nice to see that some people realize that while bands may change sound, they are still the same at their core, still possessing everything that you originally fell in love with. I dig The Art Of Drowning...So much. But all of their stuff still speaks to me, just in different ways. This is no exception. I didn't get my lifetime membership in the DF to just ignore it.
"We just come from the place of wanting to be 100% happy with the works we create, rather than fulfilling some sort of demand, whether it be from a label or a consumer," Havok says
AFI has been and always will be a changing and evolving band. They've been through many different styles, all of which have been unique to the extent that it is without a doubt AFI. In a band like that can exist and still produce interesting music, not everyone has to like it. People who hate on Crash Love annoy me. It's what they were feeling then, it's doing what they love doing. You should respect all their works, but that doesn't mean you have to like them all.
Every band has a signature style, be it the precussions, vocals, gutars, bass riffs, etc. AFI always had their signature sound that incorporated all aspects of the band, they've evolved from thrashing on instruments pre-Black Sails, to fully orchestrated grandiose music with tons of atmosphere and the dark "gothic" element. That's apparent in all albums Black Sails and up. Even in Crash Love. It's still there. A little more present than Crash Love which makes people say "Yay AFI is Back!"
I've liked every single AFI album. Not a single one I don't own or listen to all the time. Crash Love and Decemberunderground were very well written and a lot more mature than their earlier works, but the emotion is still behind it. I'm excited for Burials. I think it will be a great song. PLUS Blaqk Audio has been phenomenal since CexCells in 07.
Reminds me of what actual good music feels like. Every aspect of this song is perfect. That's it. Now replay for the 37th time. Maybe 38th. I lost count.
Its just like Black Sails in the Sunset. Not everyone loved that Album. They tried something different. Crash Love was the same way. They are always evolving and that is what I love about AFI.
He's back, and it sounds Amazing. For someone who only listens to Rap, its good. Altho Davey was very inspirational for me when i was younger, had every album. But anyway Beautiful sound.
Exactly. Even though their late-2000s material may not have appealed to ALL of their primary fans, I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was progress for the band. The lyrics were still so deep and meaningful and spoke to me, yet it was something more accessible to newer listeners that may not have been familiar with their beginning material. I never got to get the DS membership, because needless to say, I was underage and couldn't make my own money. Now I have a job, but I'm still poor, haha.
It's like when my chem tried new stuff, some people will hate it, but this growth is inevitable. To me, this is so far more reminiscent of Sing the sorrow. And I've loved all their music, I love the change, all great bands change... And they are great.
As an avid AFI fan since 1999, I have to say I'm definitely interested to listen to the rest of this album. It's very unusual for AFI to have such a raw and direct sound to them, especially lyrically. Traditionally, their lyrics are really cryptic and almost impossible to interpret, but this is so raw and blaring that it seems almost out of character for them. However, it's that kind of ambition and willingness to deviate from their norms that makes me excited for this album.
After such a long wait. AFI comes back aggressive, with a brilliant single. Ready for September to get my hands on this album. Would like to hear more tracks like this or faster, but when it comes to my favorite band for the last 11 years I can't be picky. Glad to have the boys back. When's the tour?
Oh my god... They're back. Still very different from the AFIs we've heard but the darker, angrier sound is there along with the slightly melancholy mood and it's AFI!!! Hits right to the heart for me!
Agreed....
Right in the feels 😞
My wife left 25 days ago left everything. Fuck her. Fuck it
art of drowning, black sails in the sunset and Sing the sorrow are the best for me!! They were master pieces!
This track got released right after I got my heart ripped out of my chest. Impeccable timing AFI! They've been there to sing the sorrow for me for more than a decade.
Went to my first Progress show last night and heard this, so had to find out who it was by. Surprised it was AFI lol!
Jimmy fuckin havoc?
This song is perfect
Those drums are massive and it's just so...dark. Yet it sounds like nothing AFI has done before. This exceeded my expectations in every way.
I hope there is more complexity on the album and less repetitiveness but fantastic single.
he raised his voice and sang aggressively which is a good sign.
As 40 year old musicians go, I'm glad they've been able to accept themselves and their personal tastes so freely. For private individuals, they sure do wear their influences openly!
Holiday!!! Patience and faith have rewarded me with a new album and tour coming through my city! Great song too.!
This is how to objectively critique something!
Intense feeling
One of their most contradictive albums
Still love them, their poetry and music,to stay unigue for30years,just incredible
19 people can't handle a band who's sound constantly evolves and changes but remains uniquely theirs. Their loss- this album is shaping up to be something very special, and I'm still proud to wear my DF tattoos with pride

. Now that I've listened to this track, I've gained my faith back in AFI, keep rocking on, and give me a reason to believe.
I simply cannot resist those vocals. They conjure up a feeling that feels right yet it's indescribable.
JESUS CHRIST THIS IS BEAUTIFUL YOU FOUR MEN ARE THE MOST PERFECT ANGELS IN THE UNIVERSE I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS FOR TWO HOURS GOODBYE
I love how they have that dark feel again, reminiscent of their older music, the vocals are beautiful.
Crash Love had some true gems (Torch Song, End Transmission, Cold Hands...) while still adequately marking AFI's evolution as a band. It was a new direction for them, which, as an artist, is to be respected.

Yeeeeehaw! My boys are BACK!
I am so happy with this song. It sounds like their older stuff, which is what I love. I think they did a great job with it. Love it! Can't wait to hear more if the rest of the album is anything like this.
Davey's voice sounds lovely in this song!! I will never not love this band.
I think that bands always continue to change and evolve and every new sound that AFI has created has been absolutely flawless. Forever a fan.
I don't understand how do they make so many tunes and genres, but every time had it had its AFIness and unique sound in it. AFI is genius
This is how I imagined decemberunderground would sound. I'm so excited for this album.
I'm so relieved to hear them mixing their old and new stuff into something like this. i just got so high from just hearing his voice again. this is what my life has been missing Davey
You gotta love the diversity these guys bring in their music. Always something new, brilliant. Stoked for the new album.
Perfect blend between all of their previous styles. This album will be to die for.
I got that kind of a vibe too! The outro where the instrumentation fades and Davey elicits the 'I fucking suffered'.. Quite an emotionally visceral moment, especially when punctuated by the somber moments after and the punch of the drums beforehand.
from the first album in 1995 to this. absolutely beautiful.
intoxicated with his music,,, love this...thanks
AFI are the reason I got in to music and Davey is the reason I became a vocalist. This track fucking rules and the fact that the album comes out on my birthday makes me beyond excited. Thanks AFI!

Forever screaming because it was so worth waiting 4 years to get this piece ahhh
He's done it before in plenty of instances. He's just always been very good at burying the curse words inside the piece so that instead of standing out they are such a part of the energy that they almost become invisible in the torrent of emotion.
This song live.... it was so amazing the hair stood up on my neck. So sinister and amazing.
Fantastic interpretation of the song, nice to see people reading between the lines rather than skimming the surface.
4:08 “Just like I, I fucking suffered”
Best lyric AFI has ever written
Still blows my mind how AFI can almost totally change their sound every album and still be great. My favourite band since I first heard of them in ~'02.
I was waiting for this so long...
Thanks God for this!!!
Crash Love was utterly miserable, listened to it twice and gave up on that garbage. So glad to have my faith restored in AFI!
Fires are more beautiful when they can burn out...leave the black ashes behind, and through memory pheonix reclaims, once passion.
Excited to get this album ASAP. I've missed Davey's gritty sound. It's nice to hear it back again.
I love all of afis work from early to new no matter what anyone says we all evolve all i have to say is please visit us here in Cleveland
After all this time without a new song... I'M SO HAPPY!! Welcome back!!
This single has the makings of an epic album !!! Davey has returned to his roots ( Sing the Sorrow) of describing pain and suffering from trusting a person in a loved relationship. AFI has had a very distinct progression with their music, and other side projects, but this single definitely alludes to a classic album
Right on, long time fan, and I am liking this, im sure the rest of the album will be phenomenal
God damn this band is so amazing. Been listening for 13 years and the music gets better and better.
This is perfect, this band is perfect. They will always be perfect
I loved STS, to me thats the best album they ever came out with, my heart goes out to Butch Vig who produced it. He died shortly after, to me STS was perfection in writing music. The anger in his voice, the way he softly speaks, and from 4:20 on...
Art of Drowning was the album that got me into AFI. Every Album before that made me love them.
OMG! So much power in his voice!!!
I truly cannot wait for this new album. This song is fantastic. It has more of a rock sound than the previous two albums.
Exactly!
I had a feeling that finally this album would be the true successor to STS when they posted the first teaser video a few months back. That video showed that they were going back to the dark days and I must say with this song I feel more confident than ever we are finally getting the album we wanted.

I think it's safe to say that Davey is going to bring out the fire we've been missing on this album.
This song is amazingly addictive. I love the new sound and I hope the rest of the album sounds like this. If so, it's going to be incredible.
Afi is a very good band!I enjoy listening to them,it´s when I feel in a good mood.Every song has it´s meaning for me.
Better than the entirety of Crash Love. So happy Davey is screaming again and those fantastic harmonies remind me of the days of old.
Thank you, I love the song, Davey´s voice sounds amazing, Davey, Jade, Hunter, Adam I love you, AFI 4ever , guys ur more than incredible ,

God I love this band so much please don’t stop making such great music !

I am SO glad that my favourite band continues to write music that I love.
im so happy with this. play it over and over again!
Great song. It really surpassed expectations of the majority of AFI's fans. Well done guys! Can't wait for an album to come out
AFI has been and always will be a changing and evolving band. They've been through many different styles, all of which have been unique to the extent that it is without a doubt AFI. it's about time they made more music! i have loved AFI for YEARS. this is really good, i can't wait for the whole album!
I want MORE god damnit. Best AFI stuff I've heard in quite awhile, and I cannot wait til the album release!
THEY ARE BACK!!! Thank god!!! Faith totally restored guys... So happy!! Keep up the good work guys this is fking awesome!!!
This is like the perfect mix of old and new. I love it.
i totally agree, i love this song.
I agree. I'm happy this song sounds so good.
Been a long wait, finally this beautiful piece releases. Thank you A Fire Inside, looking forward for the album.
This is WAY better than I thought it was going to be- now THAT is how to make a comeback!!!! Such a freakin' great song!
I loved Crash Love, to be honest. I loved all of their music but this is the AFI I originally loved. I'll love every AFI album, I guarantee because it's not about WHAT emotion they're conveying, it's that they can make any emotion amazing! Love these guys and always will.
Ohhhhhhh Adam Carson!!! Those drums
I love this! I needed your darkness back, guys. Thank you.
