I got two letters from you
    Last words of the runaway
Your love was written so true
And now I can't speak your name
I faced destruction and you just killed me and walked away
I gave my heart to the cruel
Now it will not beat again
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    Just like I suffered
No one will ever know you
Deny the last one who cares
    Intoxicate with the new
    Pretend I'm no longer here
I opened my heart to you
You lied just to reach inside
Now with the faith you removed our hope for forgiveness dies
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    Just like I suffered
    I've seen my darkest days
You gave each one to me
    I've seen my darkest days
You gave each one to me
You have been lost for days
    May you find my darkness
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
    I hope you suffer
    I hope you do
Just like I, I fucking suffered
    Just like you
    You made me suffer
I hope you, I hope you do

AFI is one hell of a band.
A band that has gone through more evolutions than literally any band out there. Thats a good thing. Creating, destroying, rebuilding.
Starting from the underground in the hardcore punk/hardcore scene..into the cross pollination of goth hybrid punk to the now lighter alternative sound they are today.
Thank you AFI for all the hard work you've done. Please continue to evolve and never sound the same.

My favorite part about this song is at the very end when Davey says “I hope you, i hope you do” because it just sounds so fucking raw. It’s like he has exhausted himself so much singing the song and being angry at the other person that he has no energy left. All he can do is say that he truly hopes they suffer.
    fuck.

My love for this band has never wavered and I still REALLY want to know what monster had the balls to inflict this kind of pain on Davey Havok! I know he has endured pain before but this song is gut-wrenching and in your face like never before! Whoever inspired him to write this song and perform it with that rage I would enjoy seeing their demise without a doubt. I hurt for him every single time! Such beautiful rage!

Let me just say that AFI is amazing. Saw them two days ago in Norfolk and it was the best show ever in terms of energy and unity. Davey actually got into the crowd and it all felt very old school. I saw Tool about two weeks prior, which is like a Catholic meeting the Pope or Jesus himself, and AFI definitely killed me in similar fashion. I'm about the same age as these guys, and have been listening to them since high school - '96. No, the newer stuff doesn't sound like the old stuff, but they've been at it for 20+ years, and to expect endless replication is ignorant. Evolution can be good, and none of their stuff is bad.

For the idiots debating religion on this page, An upside down cross doesn't immediately mean satanism. People mistake an inverted cross as a perversion of the normal cross, but it isn't. Do your research. It's the Cross of St. Peter. THE POPE HIMSELF has an inverted cross on his throne. St. Peter, the first Pope, was martyred by crucifixion. He did not believe himself worthy to die in the same way Jesus did, and instead, the cross was inverted. In this song, he is (most likely) making a corollary between his pain and being crucified. Gosh, some people are so ignorant.

"i cannot go back to yesterday because i was a diffrent person then i am today" i belive afi lives by this motto. they are always evolving and experimenting. even if you dont like all thier music you have to give it and them the credit and respect they deserve. they dont sell out they dont stay stale. they follow their own path with pride and confidence. ive loved this band since black sails and ive owned all albums ep lp doesnt matter as well as blaqk audio, xtrmst, and even son of sam . these guys have had a hand in developing alternative music be it punk, rock, goth, electronica theyve made such a impact in the lives of thier fans . and i can honestly say ill support any of thier endeavors for at least i know if its not enitrely my style. that they put their entire hearts and souls into what they have done. and artists today who breath live bleed and die by thier own convitions are hard to find and should be celebrated.

I used to skip this song alot on shuffle because it sounded mean and vengeful. But after a year of leaving my narcissisticly abusive exand reading the lyrics word for word while listening I can understand and feel the raw pain and emotion behind it. Because I did give my heart to the cruel and they intoxicated with someone new meaning they rebound. I wad angry at one point that I hoped they suffer badly but after angry crying and because 0f my huge heart I hoped they find help 😭😭
I even cried when I heard it live and a couple next to me was nice enough to give me a hug

I remember getting into the heaviest of mosh pits when I saw them, when AFI was a hardcore punk band and over these years to still see them doing music and growing up along the way is just fuckin awesome!! Really cant say that for a lot of hardcore punk bands from the late 90s to mid 2000s. And for those who dont like change, just fuckin deal with it!!

So we know AFI is a diverse band especially with Davey and his lyrics, he stated before he doesn't have a real meaning behinds his sings because he doesn't want to limit his fans, but does anyone know what he was going through to have him write such a cold album? He stated on a interview with spotify that he has his own meaning behind it but doesn't want to reveal it as why stated above but I'm just curious. Excellent album been a fan since 2000. TOBWAO

I hope no body takes this as an insult or anything but I can see where Imagine Dragons took some inspiration from. This is a great song and ahead of its time at least for AFI. I love when a band evolves. They tapped into a great unique sound with Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground. Not sure why I've never seen these guys or 30 Seconds to Mars. Two really good bands from that time.

Eyerolling at the people shouting they've sold out. Have you been away the last two or three albums? I can understand the shock if you last listened to them back in the mid-90s, but their sound has been gradually changing from the punk days. They've not 'sold out' (and I still haven't seen anyone explaining clearly and simply what they mean by that, anyway, apart from 'wah wah they're not making the music I want them to make'), they've just matured and changed over time. Are you still the same person you were 5 years ago? 10? People change, and AFI is no exception. They're still as talented and fucking fantastic as ever. Either love it or move on to something else, don't hang around whining and flinging false accusations.
(Anyway, would you want them to be a band that just rehashes the same thing over and over, every album just for the sake of attempting to please their fans? They're never going to make everyone happy, and they don't try to. They've said before that they just make their music as they want to make it, and hope that the fans like it.)

I do listen to Blaqk Audio, and I'm a fan. :) Not quite as big a fan as I am of AFI, but it's still pretty awesome. I didn't really notice any influence it had on AFI's newer music, but I don't necessarily mind if it did, since I like both.

  • @thisismysea

I really disliked this song when it came out because the message is so cruel, which I felt had never been a theme in even the angriest old school AFI songs. But here I am a few years later trying to recover from an abusive relationship, and I'm sad to say I finally understand the hatred and vengeance in this song. Sometimes I just lie in bed shaking with rage, sometimes I scream and scream and I can't stop. Being consumed by hate is like rotting from the inside and I still think the message here is a bad one because wishing for someone else's suffering isn't going to heal your own, but I get it. Some people deserve to burn.
