I'm actually about to have to leave the place I'm staying right now by next month and I've been looking Inot getting an adventure bike and camp setup to do exactly what your doing. I've always wanted to be out in nature and feel the fresh air hit my face. I'm also in central Florida so if you have an extra adventure bike you want me to look after for you I'd be happy to use it!

A food bag that you hang is what you use if you are backpacking and trying to save weight. REI sells bear canisters that you can put your food in so you don’t have to throw ropes into the trees. Saves time.

You are an inspiration! I figured I was doing well if I kept it under $100.00 per day. I do ride an old Honda Shadow I paid $2500.00 for, so I have you beat in the cheap bike category :) I’ve been traveling about 15,000 miles per year, but I’m usually on the road for only four weeks at a time. After four weeks I’m pretty content at home for a couple of months. I’m taking this as a challenge! My daughter is working in Alaska this summer, so I’m planning 8+ weeks, and shooting for less than $50.00 per day. Things get expensive up north, so I’ll see how it goes. Throwing money at motorcycle travel, or any kind of travel, makes it more comfortable, but it does kind of take the adventure out of it. :)

I saved a lot by accident, got a tu250x for commuting to work but ended up riding 13k miles touring across country, 70mpg, being a single cylinder air cooled cable clutch it’s really reliable and easy to adjust valves yourself, started building a tool kit and collection of replacement parts, haven’t had to change a tire yet but got a center stand and carry spare tubes

      @STho205 Рік тому

Does the TU have spoke wheels (tubes) or alloy wheels? If spokes, you need a bead breaker if you want to patch the tube. A big D clamp can do it without removing the wheel**...then like a cyclist you can skinny out a tube section, patch it and air it all back up.
Tubless tires are best for road repair with plugs...but offroad you'll destroy those hard wheels.
**there's also those welders vice grips that open wide and clamp with two flat pads.
Both are relatively small tools but heavy.

Good show Joe. I've often though the way to go would be to try and spend several days to a week or two in the same spot if it was a good spot and if possible with short day excursions to explore around the area, then take a jaunt another 100 or so miles down the road, wash, rinse and repeat. It sounded like you spent a reasonable amount of time at that spot. I'm curious as to how long. And getting to visit with that tortoise was awesome!

I met a motorcyclist that happen to be the lead chemist at a paint company. I won’t mention the name, but they’re very famous. He came to buy one of my motorcycles, possibly. We got to talking about the new tires I put on my wheels on the Moto Guzzi I had for sale. I told him that I used rubber lube to install the tires on the wheels and not dishwashing liquid which is corrosive to aluminum…
He told me there is one soap that does not have LYE in it. And that is Dawn dishwashing liquid. So that would be safe to use on aluminum wheels for cleaning or for installing new tires. He told me a trick is, if it burns your eyes, like shampoo or face soap, confirm your eyes, that’s the LYE in the soap that burnsthe eyes, and corrodes aluminum..
The problem with the aluminum corrosion, when installing tires is, that LYE never gets out of the space once you apply it to the tire and install the wheel, it stays in there, corroding the wheel and you end up with a slow leak at the bead….
I am sure a lot of tire installers use regular dishwashing liquid as a rubber lube, probably bought at the dollar store. My mother had a Toyota Camry. My sister ended up with the car when my mom quit driving. And my sister had three wheels that had slow leaks. I have a manual, old, gas station, car, tire changing machine. So I broke down the wheels to smear some of that black rim sealant. You can buy at auto parts stores. When I broke the bead on those wheels, the Rim/wheel was very corroded instead of being smooth and airtight on three of her wheels. I clean them up with a wire brush as best I could, and used that black rims sealant that looks like very thin black tar almost like chocolate pudding. And it seemed to work.
The monkey wrench in this story is, Dawn dishwashing liquid recently started advertising. They have a new formula.
i’m not worried about it because I bought a gallon of rubber live at Napa auto parts for $16. It is not as slippery as dishwashing liquid, and it seems to either evaporate or be absorbed by the tire, I have to keep reapplying it in a small spray bottle I use during the installation which takes a little longer because I’m trying to be careful not to scratch my wheels during tire changes..
I learned when I was a test rider for Continental tire. That putting an innertube in a motorcycle tire, reduces the tires load carrying capacity by as much as 10%.
The proper way to install a new tube in a tire is to apply baby powder or talc powder to the tube so that it can move freely inside the tire. When you do the first inflation with the new tube, let all the air back out of the tire and bounce the tire on the ground to allow the tube to find.its happy spot That it is not sticking to the inside of the tire, and being stretched or folded over in an awkward position, which will chaff the tube.. you are also less likely to pinch the tube when you are putting the second half of the tire on the rim after installing the tube, if you put some air in the tube. And always run a valve cap because centrifugal force and hitting potholes going to let air out of your tire if the valve is at the bottom when it hits the bumps…
some tires will have a directional arrow and the word drive or rear on the sidewall.. One tire I know had this marking on it was the Dunlop K 81. That tire can be installed on the front wheel/ backwards- because, the acceleration stress applied to a tire on the rear, is the same stress that the tire experiences on the front during heavy braking/ only backwards..I learned that from the Dunlop tire rep at a race track..
Dunlops only marked Direction for tires if they were going to be installed on the rear, but not a tire made for the front. It was common knowledge in motorcycle shops back in the 70s that you put K 81s on the front backwards…
I bought a new Honda CB 750 in 1977. In the owners manual, they said to use 90 weight gear lube on the chain. One drop between the plates were the O-rings are, and you only need to put one drop on each roller because capillary action will get that 90 weight under the roller onto the pin. So you have to oil each linking three spots. And I apply my chain lube from a little bottle that you can get at an air conditioning furnace supply house called a zoom spout. It has a retractable plastic snorkel that pulls out about a foot long for reaching into furnace oil and caps on the motors without getting oil everywhere. These bottles are about the size that would fit inside of the cardboard of a paper towel roll or toilet paper roll. I have two of them. One with high-quality electric motor oil for my fans. Call me at one I have filled with 90 weight gear lube, which I have used since 1977 on my chains, and I have never had to replace a street bike chain since then and I’ve had some pretty high horsepower bikes like an FJ 1200.
    One little chain story
I rode race motorcycles for eight years, I was actually in 4 races that were 24 hour races.. it was all of our first time in a 24. It was myself and three other employees at a large Honda shop where I was a mechanic, we were riding one of the guys personal CB 750 Honda‘s. We wanted to start the race with brand new tires, Dunlops, and a brand new chain..
so we all got to practice and set the bike up. Just before the race was to start, we threw on a brand new chain that had never turned a sprocket once. The race started. When the rider hit reserve, he was to reach down and come into the pits after turning the petcock onto reserve…
We practiced a pitstop which of minded to checking the oil, lubing the chain and filling the gas tank, and switching riders. I was waiting on my knees with a pizza box and a can of chain lube, so I could put the pizza box between the chain and the rear tire and spray away on the chain without getting chain lube on the tire.
I tried turning the wheel while the bike was on it. It’s race stand, lifting the back wheel. The wheel did not want to turn very easily, because I noticed that the chain had seized links that look like a witch his finger. And when I sprayed the chain with chain lube, the chain lube, sizzled… The chain was actually turning blue from being overheated, because we had not broken in the chain first..
We lost about 15 minutes, scrambling and reinstalling the original chain..
Hey properly adjusted and lubed chain and belt drive only loses 2% of the power between the engine and the rear wheel. A chain drive or a belt drive is 98% efficient… Shaft drive is at best 87% efficient, depending on how many times the system makes the power turn 90° once or twice.. hey Goldwing, or a Moto Guzzi , ST 1100/1300 only makes the power turn 90° at the rear wheel one time. Most other shaft drive bikes, make the Power turn 90° twice once at the engine, and once at the rear wheel..
I’m gonna stop this line of BS that I tend to go on and on about. I always assume that most people don’t know these things and I go into my public service announcement mode.
One other little thing I wanted to tell you. In one of my early Kawasaki Z 400 UA-cam videos, I touch on the subject of my PURPLE seat cushion. It’s made of some kind of rubbery material that acts exactly like gummy bear candy. The one I bought you can see in my video, I think the title was something about 20 or 22 improvements I made to my Z 400… That seat cushion is the answer. I have that on the Corbin seat of my little Kawasaki. It is over an inch thick and it is shaped like a waffle.. Great for those all day long rides

I am only on the road for a week or two at a time. I have tent camped in a truck stop before. BLM (bureau of land management land) is plentiful in the western states and have used them a few times. I too do my shopping at the thrift stores. For meals sometimes I buy a can of baked beans and a can of mixed fruit or the like and the deli dept. of the grocery store will give you a plastic spoon. The first yr I motocamped I had an old army sleeping pad. The spongy kind. The second year I got a self inflating air mattress. What a game changer. Now I put the sleeping pad under the air mattress for extra comfort. Enjoyed the video. Stay safe.

Stoves: I don't care for those types of stoves because you can't refill the canister. I use a Coleman dual fuel and syphon gas from my tank.
Have you heard of a dakota stove? Just dig a hole about 1-1/2' deep. Then punch a hole at an angle to reach the bottom of the hole for air flow. Use rocks around the top or a grate over the pit. The fire isn't visible from a distance and it isn't affected by the wind. Do a web search.

This is also very good practical advice for the week off lone rider mototouring.
Bring your BRS stove and coffee. Conv store coffee and Fast Food is horribly overpriced. Adds up quick.
I don't find random property, but USFS, TVA and Nature Conservancy public lands offer free camping (14 days) or $10 camping in semi developed grounds if you get nervous out by yourself.
Food in bulk is best. A meat and veg that can last you. One night treat for $5 to $10 from the meatcase in a grocery.

I have two questions if that's ok. Firstly you made reference to having a second pad incase you have a lady friend with you. I was wondering does living off your bike affect your ability to get dates, etc would you say? I'm guessing thats a pretty common question. Secondly how do you tend to fill your days when your not riding/working? I'm guessing that you have a lot of time to fill that you wouldn't notice as much when you're living in an apartment/house. The where and how you stay was interesting. How do you survive financially? I know myself I still have some bills that need to be paid. obviously you need to be debt free? Even then where or how can you earn enough to cover cost / repairs on the road? Is bike rally working enough to live on year after year? I'm trying to bail on the 9-5 life, however I am at a retirement age. I currently live in an RV on a camp site. I would love to find time to ride more often. I'll have to work this year out until November, then I think I'll be able to stop working all together. I start receiving retirement benefits by then.
    Good Video.

I had a 1986 R100 airhead at one point, it had a huge amount of top end power, and wasn't bad off road. I haven't ridden the bike you mentioned, but personally I like a light-weight bike for off-road stuff.

Eveybody that asks me about living on the road I discourage them. If too many start doing it then it will be outlawed. You already see too many prix throwing trash around, even see where they have done it where Joe was staying.
I try to make them fearful of wild animals and the two legged kind that say stuff like, "squeal like a pig" and "he got a pretty mouth don't he." 😂
In the last 15 years so many people have moved down to the southern Appalachian areas that it is no longer enjoyable. The roads are clogged, people hitting their brakes constantly and cant drive for shit. Running off the road dragging gravel in the curves. Even the West has more people clogging things up compared to 10 years ago but at least it isnt as bad as the East.
May see you again at camp 5 Joe. I will buy you, me and Gary another couple of large pizzas 👍😎

A couple questions for you. Can you not make a fire to cook and boil water ? Also seeing as your in the US , can you not get a carry permit for a side arm.

@@clarson2916 Yes I understand that. Could you not leave the firearm at a friends place or gun store. What about the fire question. Not trying to knock what your doing in any way. I’ve travelled around the northern US camping here and there in the past so I understand your way of life

    • @clarson2916
      @clarson2916 Рік тому +1

@@tobinlakeguideservices I’m not Joe (the guy in the video) but I’ve traveled the country and into Canada and Mexico by motorcycle. I do often, without much advance planning, venture into Canada in the summer and Mexico in the winter. A firearm is just more trouble than it’s worth, but that just me. I carry a stove like Joe has also. I do occasionally make a fire, but often, especially out west, there are fire bans. In addition I can use a canister stove in the tent vestibule. A campfire, although it is my preferred way to cook, also takes more time to start and to safely extinguish. When I want to get going in the morning the canister stove is quicker. I will add though that the cost of a can of fuel isn’t as much of a concern for me as it probably is for someone living full time on the road.

Yeah, you could definitely boil water if near a water source. I usually journey into town for my water though. If you get a screw top, you can refill it at a gas usually. I've got .38, but don't carry it because of the reasons mentioned, and the laws in some US states. I understand there's a national type of permit available, which I plan on looking into at some point. It would be nice to have it.
