  • TV just gives a quick flash and shuts down back lighting because of defective LED's.
    I recommend to replace all 12 strips if you can find them in stock.
    Each strip has 8 LED's for a total of 96 LED's.
    The LED's are 3030 3v SMD.
    Tools I use:
    Microscope:
    amzn.to/2xH6N7Q
    Microscope light:
    amzn.to/2wuzLsW
    Microscope barlow lens:

    Hot air station #1 (I use the industrial version 8900):

    Soldering iron #1 (small stuff):

    Soldering iron #2 (small stuff):

    Soldering iron #3 (for high thermo):

    I picked up exactly the same model at a curb, and it displays exactly the same symptoms as yours. I used a flashlight trick to confirm that LCD screen actually works and all I'm missing is the backlight. I am amazed though, that you immediately started digging into the LEDs and didn't try to blame the LED driver board (which is integrated into a main board in this model). I was hoping I'm not gonna have to mess with the LED strips, but your video is very convincing...

    Great video! You absolutely did a thorough job of explaining the crazy amount of work that goes into repairing one of these. I personally don't think they're worth repairing, and, considering how many hours this video has gotten, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Mine went into the dumpster. I repaired it once, and had it repaired three times by a pro in Hays, Kansas. His name was Jerry. Very professional and great at his job, that guy. As the daughter of an electronics engineer, I know a great repair guy when I see one. You've got my seal of approval. I will definitely subscribe. I will not, however, be purchasing another Vizio product for as long as I live. Not worth the effort! I should suggest your viewers spring for a more reliable brand. I bought a Samsung to replace this giant old brick, and am planning on purchasing another for my office.
    Again, great video, and thanks for taking the time put it together. Much appreciated. There's obviously a market for such a video!

      If the TV is having multiple failures and requiring multiple repairs than I'm going to assume at the time of repair only the single bad LED is being replaced instead of all the strips replaced with new. Generally once ALL the strips have been replaced it's good to for a long time. It's not just Vizio that suffers from bad LED's, they all do. Even the other big names like Samsung, LG and TCL. It would be like having a Ford that got a flat tire, then you traded it in for a Chevy while expecting to never get a flat tire again. A bit of a false sense of security.

    • @IAmPamPoovey

      @@jeffescortlx Nope. Every single time, ALL the LEDs were replaced. I haven't had this issue with the Samsung at all, although, I did wall mount it instead of having it sitting on a TV stand like the Vizio. It doesn't get jarred that way, so this could be the reason for its reliability with the LEDs. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with your assumption. I don't half ass anything and neither does Jerry, although the warranty company did attempt to talk him into doing the replacements that way. He insisted upon replacing them all. The Vizio was much slower to connect than any others I've tried. I'm wondering if that's specific to the brand. If not, then I suppose I just got a shit TV and the dumpster is the best place for it either way.

      @@IAmPamPoovey I would have felt compelled to get to the bottom of it. Did anyone test the strips individually just to see if the new strips were having LED failure or some other issue? Depending on how the TV is put together firm ware can play a role. Just out of curiosity do you run backlighting at maximum settings?

    I was given a Vizio E60-C3 and I have the exact problem that you have. Being a Computer Tech and having motherboard soldering skills I think I can do what you did to fix said problem. The only thing is I don't have a desire to do all of what you did with each light. I will just replace the entire strip. I will look online for complete strips. I love your video. I have never seen the inside of a LED TV and I was shocked at the price that they charge for these TV's and when you take one apart, there is really nothing inside. Thanks again.

    I have an m60-C3 that has a few dim areas. Not completely dark. TV is still watchable but just annoying. Most noticeable when the picture turns light colored. Is this the same as an E60-C3? Is there any prying or separating of glued things to take it this apart?

    Same TV issue. Used LED tester. Strips light sometimes 1 light comes on after a min using tester, but when I turn tv on only 2 strips I'll stay lit. Woukd the few LEDs that are slow to come on cause the other strips not to light?

    Do you have any advice or tips for removing the panel safely? I need to change a few LEDs on my m60-c3. I've taken my 50" LG fully apart about 17 times with no issue however this 60" is larger of course and kind of intimidating. I seen suction cups used online but my local store only had 1 in stock so I only have 1 for now, probably bow the screen with 1 lol. Any other ways to remove panel ? Most likely I'll be alone doing it as well so only 1 set of hands unfortunately. Thank you for your time!! Cheers from Canada

    Hi Jeff thanks for the video. I have this tv and have some dark areas, I figured it was bad leds but the other day I turned it on and some of the dark areas relite, could an led come back on temporarily or would this be the driver card failing? Thank you for your time.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  5 років тому +2

      More than likely one of the failing LED's shorted, allowing the rest of the LED's in the row to light. I'm sure your LED driver board is ok.

      @@jeffescortlx thanks for the info, you helped me decide on fixing this tv or buying new, I'm just gonna give it a try. Another thought I had was installing a switch to cut the power off and on to the led strips, that way I could keep them off until the tv boots up and stop the intial boot surge from reaching the strips. Do u think that would work or would the tv sense that there is something not right with the leds.

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  5 років тому

      @@dickderbin6518 depending on where you connect the switch, you might need 12 switches since this model uses independent zones. Also it may have a capacitor after the control/regulating circuit, so it could potentially charge to max range (with no load it's likely to go to max)

      I had the same TV for about a year after the warranty ran out, so four years. I repaired it once myself, and then bought a new TV. The repair worked fine, it just wasn't worth the effort, as, after about six months, the LEDs started going out again. While the warranty was still active, I had to have the TV repaired for the same reason three times. It's a cheap piece of junk. I should have gone with the Samsung in the first place. The Vizio is slow. It takes FOREVER to connect. The Samsung doesn't have this problem and I've not had to use the warranty to have the LEDs replaced with it since I bought it. I'm looking to purchase another Samsung for my office as well. LG is also a decent brand to look into. I've heard good things about Sony's larger screen smart TVs and TCL too, but I'm afraid Vizio lost my business for good with this one. Also, if you didn't get your 13 or so bucks from that little class action lawsuit payout from Vizio, you might have missed the window, but it's worth checking into. $13 is $13, right? In all, you get what you pay for. I should have ponied up the extra $500 for the Samsung in the first place. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and headaches. Just a suggestion, and, like I said, I've heard good things about LG and Sony as well. Personally, I'd go with darn near anything but a Vizio at this point. Their sound, even without the bar and boomers is decent. I'll give them that, but those LEDs popping out every five seconds absolutely turned me off of them. Have fun repairing yours if you so choose. And have fun doing it again.
      And again.
      And again.
      😉
