For anybody curious about some pro tips from somebody who learned about this stuff the hard way, pre-cook the ramen in plain water (in the bag) before adding all the crushed chips and whatever sauces so that they don’t get diluted (and you can use less of the soup packet this way.)
(Use the soup packets sparingly because they are your best friend when eating the flavorless slop trays)
If the spread is too dry add more hot water to your liking but most recipes require that it not be soupy, sometimes on the dry side if making a makeshift dough.
There’s a lot of recipes that are considered “spread” my favorite is the “manwich”. Also, the combination of Raisin Bran and crushed sugar cookies with some grape jelly maybe a banana and peanut butter, and some milk. Great Friday breakfast for the people who can’t afford commissary.
Crushed cheez it’s or hot cheese puffs mixed with a tiny bit of hot water makes a thick sauce that coats the ramen, can mix in spicy instant refried beans for a really nice flavor and the beans makes it more filling. Ultimately everything can be made to your liking (unless it’s a collaborative effort)
Spread was one of the only positive things that happens in a very dark place. It’s not gourmet, but it keeps peoples spirits high, and if you’re in there, putting your weight up on the bar, you need the fuel.

The regular food trays alone are *so* calorific! Not filling nor very nutritious but holy crap the calories. Plus, sugary "electrolyte drink" (basically kool aid) at every meal.
My brother was in and out during his misspent 20's and was one of very few people who *needed* spreads while behind bars to supplement his intake. One of those people who never gains an ounce, ya know?
He came out 15 pounds heavier, tipping the scales at a whopping 160 pounds. And, yes, "whopping" is sarcasm. Everyone else added at least double that to their frames.
There are totally people who basically body build behind bars. Living off cans of salmon, tuna, peanut butter, etc. That shit is crazy.

I know more people that have been to jail or prison than ones I don't. Unfortunately I've known or related to some shit people but I don't deal with any of those types now. I used to want to help people like that but truthfully they don't want it bc if they did they'd ask or try and change. Everyone I know that's been to actual prison has been more than once and for some people it's just in their DNA to be fuck ups and cons. With some of them it was environment but in the case of my sister it was genetic. Her dad was a loser but he ran off when are was 18 months so he had no part of raising her and the man who did is an angel but it's in her genes to live this life. There's no one thing that creates these types it's all the individual and many factors in their lives.
