What a great story. Actualy I invented that new 100m strategy and tried something new right after your agdq 2015 video , because I knew without a new strategy the 9.41s could not be beaten. And it just worked out. PAL seems maxed at 9.19s and ntsc at 9.20s.

I really like how you take these background, kind of low-level, you-had-to-be-there kind of stories, and just make them sound so relatable and nostalgic even to people who weren't there. It really goes to show how an event doesn't need a big fanfare and headlines on gaming websites to hold a special place in gaming history, even if it's only a minor one.
I miss old GDQ. There is something that was lost when they sanitized / professionalised the event. I am still mad at the bonesaw situation. Anyhow, this was an interesting story!
Man, I remember this story! It was amazing back then, and it's still amazing today. It's actually unbelievable that a new strat was found in a mashing minigame, and that such a strat is basically "starting in second gear". Reality is truly stranger than fiction.
OMG thank you for making this, I still watch the original video all the time. The face and pose 0xwas makes after winning will stick with me forever. Had no idea it was almost not recorded.
I'm honestly surprised the N64 version of the game is so popular, As the controller is so awkward, I'd have thought the PS1 version of the game would have been more accommodated.
The n64 version most likely has faster load times. Also, the nature of the game, it seems like it's just a collection of mini games, which means you don't even have to use the full controller for the most part

It's so cool to see that so many people were celebrating the fact that the record was broken, even though many of them were competing to be the one that broke the record.
Reminds me of the kid that was the first one to "beat" tetris. All these people were competing for it because it was discovered that it could actually be done and a strategy was found, and there are various clips of all these people that were trying to be the first get so hype and proud when they heard the news that some kid had finally done it
0xwas is such a beast, i remember he was the king of Kirby's Super Star on SNES, an incredibly technical and input heavy game on par in diffuculty and competition with the best of them, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, what have you. Loved watching his runs and world records in those years. Thanks for the story Goose!
Boy what an awesome story, awesomely delivered. I just can't grasp the excitement that must have been in that room. Imagine days after days of endless passion for gaming, all those enthusiastic gamers around him, the heat, the sweat of hours of gaming, the passion, the wires, the TV's and then Oxwas getting the WR... I'm positive that this was one of the most exciting nights for Ryan Lockwood. I'm sure 50% of the excitement is the whole crowd and 50% is Lockwood. If he would have gotten the WR then some people might have lost hearing. One of your most awesome videos Goose. Thank you for sharing! MOAR!
I believe he was a competitively ranked speedrunner well before that event too. I discovered him through a duo speedrun he did around that time (well worth looking up if you haven't seen it, definitely one of those "wait, how do I get more of this guy" moments) and think he already had records going back a decade or so. Part of what makes this channel so good is that firsthand experience of what goes into speedrunning and retro gaming in general, commentary is always more valuable when it comes from someone that really knows the ins and outs of the topic.
AGDQ 2015 was the most memorable GDQ I ever went to and it was extremely impactful on my life afterwards. Arie and I roomed together for that event. Dude's a menace (in a good way)
I really enjoy hearing stories like this from you. This was not a world I was part of, even though video games have always meant so much to me, especially the 64, but it's really interesting to learn about.
I was there in the room when this happened! I believe I was in the back playing Shovel Knight or something, when I heard the insane reaction of 0xwas breaking the record. Obviously I was aware this whole thing was going on, I gave it a couple tries myself at some point that week. If I remember correctly, that money 0xwas got came from a pool where you had to like, leave in $5 or something, to sit down and have a few minutes of attempts at winning the whole thing if you broke the record. That may not have been a requirement to play, it's obviously been 10 years so I may have forgotten some specifics, but I do remember throwing in like $5 or something and giving it a try myself for a while. I also remember hearing that like, one person brought one copy of the game initially (who I now assume to be Ari that you talked about throughout the video), but after they realized the amount of interest in playing the game far exceeded the capacity of one setup, they found a local retro game store, went there and bought out their entire stock of Track And Field cartridges. Either they were bought there, or like rush-ordered online, but I think I remember hearing that all but one of the setups were bought specifically for this.
its nice, also got me thinking baout myself 10 years back and how far things have come for me and my ppl. You got a real skill for makeing the past feel so textured Goose. Also this been close enough to new year makes it feel a little like the 2020 vid you did (goated btw). Stay true
You're one of the true absolute legends of speedrunning goose. They should have you reading comfy speedrun lore during the breaks at GDQ. Infact, you should be the one running GDQ by now!
Ah, another nice and interesting story from back then. I remember the gdqs from 13-15 very well, some great streams during that time. Till next time at the fireside. Thankfully, winter is still long, so there is a lot of time for cozy videos :)
I only ever played the PS1 version of track&field - but I remember that it had some code which detected if your inputs were too robotic, because if you used one of those "turbo" controllers to mash the buttons, it would slow you down and display a message which said "using trick?" or something like that. I wonder if that's why the TASers struggled.
Yes this is correct, however if you used a sock and slid back and fwds over the buttons really fast you could get the game to display that thinking you were cheating when you were not, I recall being able to get 7 seconds or so in thay version. No idea what the WR is but yeah that version was the original best. Just called international track and field I think
A wonderful story! Thanks for sharing again Goose. Even though I was following speedrunning back then, I missed this when it happened (or maybe saw it and just forgot?). Either way, nice to remember those high octane super-hype moments from back then.
I used to watch lots of GDQ runs every year. I even tried to watch live as much as I could. These days, I just check the vods, and usually I skip 90% or more of the runs. The entertainment value and energy of the old events is just gone. For me, I think my excitement started to seriously wain when I kept hearing about how some of my favorite runs were done by people who ended up getting banned from the event for reasons that seemed nonsensical to me.
