Hunting down an old bottle dump. A river walking, mudlarking adventure.

- I went looking for the source of a lot of broken bits of pottery and glass, assuming it would be an old dump site disturbed by bottle diggers. I found it, and had fun seeing what things I could find.

#Mudlarking
Fabulous thanks Tom ,your comments make everything so much more interesting.
As a person that uses a wheelchair for mobility, my woods wandering days are behind me. I find the beauty that you offer up in your meanderings so fully satisfying, thank you. I’m currently in the middle of creating an oil painting of your mud larking window of treasure. Admittedly, I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with that window and it’s view. It’s a challenging painting and can’t wait to share it with you. Thank you for your quiet easy style, it is a balm for a restless spirit.
The "gravy-skimmer" is part of a mustache cup, the bridge kept a man's mustache from getting into his tea.
Thank you, I hadn't heard of those before 🙂
to be more specific they're from the era of fashionable waxed mustaches and, should the long whiskers get in the tea, the wax would melt and ruin the Look. i collect mustache cups because they're just so very victorian and silly; i love them. that one wasn't very rare or fancy thankfully lol
Thats what I thought. Though invalid feeding cups can be similar looking.
@@tom_burleigh Yeah, a strange item the Victorians came up with I believe. I knew a barber that had over 500 of these in his barbershop. They were actually rather beautiful and he paid a bit of money for some of them. I don't think his wife approved. (O:
@@sarahstrong7174 Don't they normally have a spout?
Yes Tom, I would love to see you search through the bottle diggers pile for all the wonderful things they missed. As always thank you for a wonderful video, I enjoy your music, your voice, your commentary, the beautiful scenery and your wonderful finds. Thank you.
Well said.
Yes please go back to that place. I always enjoy your videos. Very calming. Thank you
Thank you, I plan to head back there soon. 🙂
flowing water, walking pace, greenery and the music. calming Sunday evening watch, thank you Tom
Hope you enjoyed it too 😊
Thanks Patricia, I enjoyed the outing very much... the editing much less so, but now it's up I can enjoy thinking about the next outings🙂
Yes, I agree with everything Patricia said. Also thank you.
Patricia Gannon aaaqaaaaaaaaaaaaapaaaaapp
I really REALLY enjoy your videos Mr. Burleigh! In a cachophonous world, your videos are a welcome session of peace and mindfulness.🌱
Thanks so much Ramona, it was great that you were able to join the chat, and I'm glad you enjoy my videos. 🙂
His voice is so soothing. Love him.
Every time you say "I am taking it", it gives me life lol
So good to see you out and about again, Tom. At 8:30, I think that is actually part of what they call a mustache mug - designed to keep a flowing mustache out of the liquid. :)
Got to tell you Tom I have watched your videos over and over again at night to relax!
Thank Stefanie, I like that my videos are good for people to relax to, and to fall asleep to. 🙂
Me too
@@tom_burleigh I work in mental health at our state hospital. When I get home my mind is going so fast I can't sleep. So your videos have honestly been a huge help! I don't know how looking for copper and wire puts me to sleep but hey.. LoL honestly I think it's your voice very soothing.
Wow, I think I would have felt very greedy coming across all those wonderful bottles!
Thank you for taking us on your beautiful mudlarks, Tom!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it... I will go back, so, yeah... greedy, just spread out. 🙂
Call me crazy but I love it when you speak clearly about the history in all these places, especially the ugly history. People don’t want to talk about the ugly history and that isn’t good... it keeps being repeated
I just love the greenery, the sound of the water rushing over the rocks. I have to get in my car and drive miles to get to woods, streams and the abundance of trees.
Pure paradise....thank you for taking us along! -carrie
Thanks for taking me along. It was fun. And thanks so much for picking up the garbage/ plastic etc.
So enjoyable! Quiet, calm, peaceful. Everything I so need right now. Thanks for being you, Tom.
You need to do *voice overs* for commercials, you really have the voice for it. Great video
Thank you, if someone offers me a job, I'll consider it. In the meantime, I'm practicing, and hopefully getting better 🙂
This one made me tear up. The stream and woods were so unbearably beautiful, and I will never get to see them in real life. Thanks for this gorgeous video.
Thank-you for such an interesting and fun watching you find such neat treasures
What a fun collection and a beautiful view.
I am very lucky to live in an area with so many beautiful views. 🙂
I know that I watched this video when it was new, because the like button is hit, but I can't find it in my memory. It feels like new to me. I still love your videos Tom. After years of life changes it's good to know your videos will always be here. ❤❤
So peaceful and a great place to find treasure ;)
Tom, thank you so very much for this vlog, it’s fantastic. Fabulous finds and yes please, more of them same. I can’t wait. Take care xxx
Grate video Tom. A lovely way to settle my Monday Afternoon. Lovely music and lovely water sounds. I just love them !
Thank you for sharing with us Tom😇🙂.
Oh, I would go back and reverse dig that huge spoil mound for sure!
Hi Tom, thank you for a lovely video, must let you know that your videos have really kept me going these past few months, while the world went crazy around me, they were an oasis of calm. You are a special person. Take care.
I enjoyed your journey down the river very much. Your voice is very calming and your discourse very entertaining.
Thank you again for an awesome walk up the river, you found some beautiful finds too. Stay safe and well over there, and yes do go back and re dig or sifting the soil 🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺
Thanks Chris. I'm making plans to make it happen. 🙂
Thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Great finds. Thanks for taking us along.
There were some lovely bottles there. Seems strange they left that little poison. Thanks so much for thinking of us regarding the doll bits! I would love to see your Discworld elephant assemblage up together :)
Ah, the river was so refreshing. Your idea of filling in a digger’s hole and searching for items they missed would be interesting. It’s early October 2022 and I’m going through your older videos.
Such a peaceful break from seeing the severe damage hurricane Ian caused. The east coast of Canada also suffered from an ogre of a storm called Fiona!
That’s all for now. I’m happy to see you have resumed creating videos.
Even Mudpies have started again.
Take care of yourself. Bye from Ontario Canada.🇨🇦
I love the blue milk glass and the little green poison bottle. It was a wonderful lark today( well, when ever today actually was). Glad you took the Elephants.
U will find some lovely little bits hidden under the spoil. Well worth going thru it. Fab vid as always.👍👍👍👍👍❤
I'm just about to go to bed and I'm going to listen to this and then tomorrow I'm going to watch it I'm so excited!
We really enjoyed watching your video tonight. We both thought the river seemed so lush and alive + love the little green poison. Thank so much for the shoutout too, we really appreciate your kindness.
Thanks Josie and Andy, I hope the shoutout helps... your filming and presentation is well worthy of a much bigger audience. 🙂
Thank you. Your picking style is refreshing.
Your voice is relaxing, soothing and so is the running water. Very nice!
Never fear, Tom. I will be there whatever you decide to dig, wherever you dig it, whatever nature you film, whatever trail you hike, and I would really enjoy a reverse dig of anything except possibly a cemetery. Even that may be negotiable depending on how old...LOL. your videos are simply treasures. Fan in California.
Always a joy to go with you on your adventures....thank you Tom.
Love to see a reverse bottle dig.Lots of good findz, finds, and a beautiful day.
Thankyou very much Tom. Lovely walk & interesting finds.
Another wonderful walk in your beautiful countryside! I love the tiny bottles and the teapot! Thank you for a great video, as always.
A must for a return visit...can't wait for you to take us all along. Thanks!
Holy moly. That bottle dump was almost overwhelming.
Yes!! Go back!! That place was loaded!! Exciting!!
You have such a calming and pleasant voice. It's such a pleasure to listen to you and also see what you collect on your walks. I am in the United States and our history is much newer than yours so we don't have the artifacts you do. Ours is mostly from Native American Indians. Happy hunting!
We will be up for a reverse bottle dig!
Thanks Kelly. When I work out how to do it; and collect my sieve from the family home... I'll give it a go. 🙂
@@tom_burleigh You may need some hardware cloth and some wood slats to make a sieve. I think a regular sieve would take all day to go through that pile. Hardware cloth isn't expensive and you can make your own sieve and choose the size of the holes in the hardware cloth. Never could figure out why some man named metal mesh hardware CLOTH? There is a lot of that going on in this world, like red bellied woodpecker and his head is red, not his belly.
Delightful, as usual, and thank you for sharing the new mudlark channels!!
Thanks for an interesting and enjoyable journey down the river. The bottles look fine with the light shining through.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. 🙂
A beautiful day for a walk along the river. Love the sound of the water and the bridges. The piece of pottery that you mentioned maybe it was for separating eggs is part of a mustache cup. To keep the big bushy mustache out of the cup of tea. Some were on a manly size mug shape and others on fancier tea cups.
The too large for a top item looks like part of a toilet float valve.
Wonderful to see you Tom. Thank you for taking us along with you. Stay safe!
Thanks Kaylin, I'm glad you enjoyed coming along 🙂 Hope you're staying safe and well too.
A very beautiful area. Love the sound of the creek. Nice fines. 🌞🏝
That insulator is crazy valuable to collectors, particularly with the iron mount.
I had the best time on this lark! So many treasures! I love the itty bitty bottles and the elephants, but I think the coat hook was my big favorite...and the game piece!! I think I would keep the pill box closed. I am sure it is a small treasure of a child from long ago and now you are keeping it safe forever for them; possibly a small tuft of hair from their favorite puppy or kitten, or the button nose of their favorite bear that kept them safe at night, or maybe just a wish whispered inside and sealed to keep safe for always. Until next time, stay safe and hold tight to those you cherish! ~Jen
If only there were no adverts, this would be my favorite UA-cam watch (listen) - and I would pay for it.
Oh you should go back! That was a great site! Wonderful video with some amazing finds. What wonderful people to gift you so many things. Truly everyone is enjoying your videos. Including myself. Thank you for taking me with you. Stay safe. 🦋
I am so glad I found your channel. I look forward to each and every exploration. I have back problems and don’t get out very often. Keep up the excellent work and I love the fact you pick up rubbish as you go too. Thank you for sharing
Thank you, I'm glad you get some vicarious enjoyment from watching along. 🙂
29:24 I was JUST thinking how much they would love the Geisha figurine & the partial doll's head! I love what they do with their broken finds. All that Geisha needs is a head, of which they have more than a few. LOL
Loved seeing you mess about in the river and the bottle dump. You picked up a metal thing that looks like a giant walnut whip - I think it is a transformer. The bottles were great, especially the cobalt blue ones and the green poison one.
I think that messing about in holes and spoil heaps sounds like a fun adventure and I would watch.
Thank you for taking us with you.
Tom , I think it's a great idea to fill the spoil piles and look for more treasures !
Thanks Jane. I'm planning a trip back there soon to try it out, and see how easy it will be to film. 🙂
What a wonderful assemblage of stuff !
I really enjoy the river walks! Very relaxing for me that is, no slippery rocks at my end
Take care and keep on keeping on!
Oh, Tom, I'm always so glad to see a new vlog of yours. Lovely river, huge bottle dump, which I'd enjoy seeing you filling in the holes left by others and perhaps rescuing treasures of your own. Thanks so much for brightening my evening in this time of extended social distancing, and remaining at home. Good health to you and your loved ones!
Love the blue milk glass. Great color. Looking forward to your return trip.
Tom,
What a stunning view out that window framed by that treasure trove.
Peace Luke T
Sent you a ko fi and an amazon gift. Just wanted to say how very much I appreciate your intelligent articulate and soothing patter. Helps me shake off the cares of the day and sleep
Thank you so much, both gifts are very kind of you. The Ko-fi gift will go towards tools and materials for videos, and the Amazon gift will accompany me on all river walking outings, helping me to spot things in the water. I'm very glad you find my videos a help in unwinding and falling asleep, 🙂
Thanks ever so much for the shout-out Tom! That's very kind of you :) Would love to know what's at the bottom of the pit, with so many treasures now on the surface... loved that blue milk glass cream pot and the five stone!!
I love your words and voice. Thank you. I love channel
Such pretty river systems filled with artifacts , I am envious.
Sooo many bottles 😱...only bottles that took corks they interest me...cool finds
Ahhhhh! I just love dump sites like this! Such an assortment of this and that. I too would skim the otherwise invisible tiny things from the surface after a rain- and would find myself always wishing on a good storm! Where I am now, I have yet to find an old dump- or any dump of size. The old ones are on the properties of individual houses, so... BUT, my 2 larking locations have been lots of fun, tidal- so always changing and revealing small treats. Speaking of which, that small round hollow thing may just be a little compact. I've found several in the past- a few w/ intact mirrors. You may want to carefully, gently open it up and see! Thank you for your time and care sharing your larking adventures. They're always a treat, and I'm always more relaxed and less stressed after viewing. Cheers from Maine!
Yes, I especially like them if I'm the first mudlarker on the scene 🙂 Had such a fun time at the bigger, river carved cliff face recently after Storm Francis passed... found so many things, (and accidentally left a pile of things, but not a problem... there's plenty more to be found).
I'm going to try some WD40 to see if I can ease up the hinge on the little brass box, it probably has a clip seal too, but will need a bit of cleaning before I know who best to try and open it. I'd like to restore it if I can, just as practice for other things. 🙂
Hello, yes yes you should go back. There are good finds there. I wish I had a place like that dump to go to. I would go there and get all the old dishes and shards I could carry out. I am finally getting to do an mosaic table top. I have been wanting to do for years. You are very lucky to have such good dumps you can go to. Great finds.
Thank you☮️🇨🇦I loved this video so much.
I love seeing and learning about your area. I’d have such a hard time leaving all of those awesome artifacts! Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for leaving some good treasures for me...booking my flight to come and do some gathering of all the goodies you left behind. Love your videos!
Another visit would be good always love the little bottles.
Definitely going to return there soon. 🙂
That was great fun to watch and participate in the chat. Thank you Tom for providing an opportunity to converse with people who also enjoy mudlarking (or at least watching other people mudlark). Your videos are always filled with beautiful scenery and interesting finds and, of course, that voice of yours. If you ever want to try a different type of video there is a career in ASMR for you as well, but please don't stop doing what you are doing too!
7 blue bottles you ignored our didn’t see. But two elephants! That is good signs for the Disc World. Please go back!!
I saw many more than 7 blue bottles there, I have to be quite picky these days, such a small place I live in now. 😕 The Discworld sculpture though, that is going to be a big project. 🙂 I am planning on going back there soon, when I've gotten a few things from my old home, and the insurance on the new (old) car sorted out.
@@tom_burleigh I'm looking forward to the discworld project!
Me too! That would be awsome to see😁😁
Spectacular day. I’d love to see what you find sifting and refilling. Thanks!
Thanks, I hope to do that sometime soonish... there's a few spoil piles there, so I could try the idea on my own and then with other Mudlarkers when the Pandemic eases. 🙂
12:23am first time watching and mate your voice is so peaceful while I’m high really enjoyed the watch thank you Tom
Enjoyed that greatly Tom. Thank you. The Ford rear marker and stop lamp would have come home with me. I have never seen a Ford one before, other marques like Dodge I have seen and of course the usual illuminating STOP ones. Re filling a bottle diggers excavation would be so interesting. To see what they have missed and maybe them to see missed treasures themselves would be fun.
A very interesting video some of the bottles are a beautiful colour if I was younger I would have loved to be a mud larker I am 70years old but in my heart I am 25
Wind and snow here today...no getting outside...so went back in time and rewatched this video which gave my snowbound mind a little lift. I hope you are well, maybe crafting. My other hope is that you enjoy making these videos as much as we all enjoy watching them.
It's a bit grey here, but I'm still getting out and about... some long walks to build fitness for Spring time mudlarking. I'm doing alright thanks, and hope you are too. I've not gotten as far ahead as I hoped with mudlarking video editing, so not much crafting yet this year... a bit, but nowhere near as much as I'd hoped. I think I enjoy filming the videos as much as people enjoy watching them, and I like having made them and released them. The inbetween bits; the endless editing, is a bit hard to enjoy. Still, it beats most jobs I've ever had 🙂
Love all of the glass finds.
Hi Tom,
Another great video,
Some nice bottle finds, loved the blue coloured one...😎👍👍
The balsam is quite lovely. Finding it is along a river is always a treat. Here in America it is orange.
Oh wow Tom, what a beautiful area to mudlark in 👍
I especially loved the poison bottle and the 2 Amber pill bottles. I've recently found an area near my home which I think was an old dump and just yesterday I found my very first amber poison bottle with NOT TO BE TAKEN - screw top and then my partner found a bit smaller and older one also amber. I was so excited 😊
Between you, The Johnson's and Kit and the Caboodlers, you have all inspired me to go out more and search for treasures❤ 😊 so thank you.
And thanks for sharing your video 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Yes I think that looking through the spoil piles would be great!
Omg! The scenery is just breathtakingly beautiful! I wish I could still venture out. Enjoy your time in this gorgeousness
My evening just became better Thank you very much
You're very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Thank you , that was awesome , so much bottles so hard to leave them all behind , do return again please 👍👍👍👍😁
That was a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I'm very glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
That dig would be very interesting. Ohhhh what would be found. The unexpected for sure. I say yes
Great lark!
This has to be my favourite video of yours so far Tom - I've watched it numerous times already and always see something different! I love it! I think it would be really interesting to see you follow aquachiggers idea of digging a little down in the river to see what it hides beneath the surface sediment. I'd also love to see you filling in one of those huge holes the bottle diggers have left definately a great idea that I've not seen done before. As always take care and thank you for sharing!
What a great mudlark so far !! Thanks so much for doing these “live” ones Tom !! ~Karyn from North Carolina USA
Thanks Karyn, I'm glad you're enjoying it. 🙂
I'm really enjoying them, very peaceful. Also from North Carolina USA😀
No less silly than finding a carrot in the river. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely adventures. I always look forward to seeing them. Thank you again for your time and patience.
Great video, very pretty scenery and lovely finds. More visits to the same place please.
Thanks Sarah, I'm planning on revisiting this place fairly soon. 🙂
You always choose the most beautiful places to go larking.
Hi Tom. Once again thank you for the video. So many wonderful things just waiting for someone to make use of them again. The small white jar looked like a Carmex jar. Carmex Lip Balm is still widely used for chapped lips and fever blisters. I have a jar of it at any given time! I love The Last of the Summer Wine. As a mother of four boys, that show always struck a chord with me.
