    I have about 250 strawberry plants started from just 20 plants purchased less than 5 years ago. I grow most of them in stacking towers and some in plastic trough pots. I grow runners to replace old plants but I also trade them for other produce with other local urban homesteaders on Facebook.

    You must not have a slug problem. We’ve got so many, I’ve got to grow most everything in raised beds. PS I usually use mulch for water retention rather than “suppression”.😂 you’re just too funny sometimes-definitely my favorite garden channel... great concentrated-no time wasting content! ty!!!

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the encouragement and laughs - did I really say 'water suppression'? Sheesh!
      We have quite a few slugs and they get into raised beds as well. But as the season heats up they start to diminish.
      The magic is having ducks around - they LOVE to eat slugs.
      We had ducks for about 5 years and they'd go on a morning rampage each day when I let them in the garden snatching up all the slugs. That's very fun to watch :)
      blessings on your spring !

    I put in 25 bare root starts some survived som didn’t but none of them grew runners, I got maybe 4-6 actual berries, I think the birds got them I may have to put some bird netting over my bed it’s a blue a 4’x4’ space but it is November here in the the Pennsylvania climate south central PA I am still getting flowers and green fruit one berry almost ripe!!

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  3 роки тому +1

      Still getting flowers on strawberries in November is wonderful! I'm surprised you didn't have any runners - did you plant quite late in the season?
      It's true re: the birds - if they find your patch you'll likely need a defense plan !

    @SustainableStace I’m growing strawberries this year for the first time. I recently purchased a raised planter box to grow them in. The measurements are L x W x H x depth of planter bed itself (31.3 in x 15.35 in x 34.65 in x 11.5 in). It does have drainage that goes through the legs. I’m wondering how many plants should I grow in this container and how far apart should I plant them. Thanks for any suggestions and advice. I love your video and I’ve already subscribed to your channel and saved this video. Your video is so helpful!! Thanks 😊

      Hello Teresa !
      Spacing about 1 foot apart is ideal for strawberries.
      Get creative and set up a planting grid to optimize the number of plants with that spacing and you'll be golden!

      @@SustainableStace I was thinking I probably couldn’t get more than 3 plants in one of those containers. What do you think? Also, I’m wondering when I should think about dividing up the strawberry plant in my hanging basket. It’s quite full, not sure if it’s overcrowded or not.

    very informative, after 3 years when plants dont produce do you have to buy whole new batch of plants or do the runner plants propagated every year keep extending the viability of this starter 25 your bought? and thank you , very thorough keep it up

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  3 роки тому +2

      That's a great question :)
      The best thing to do is use runners from your older plants to have new plants.
      Best practice would be to always have a variety of different ages. As new ones come on they replace the older ones which age out.

    • @SustainableStace

      Those are PVC pipes. Hard, flexible, hollow plastic.Typically these are used for underground potable water piping into homes.

    beautiful work. i have a question: is the plants' inability to grow runners related to the plastic they're planted on, or is it just that the runners grow regardless but you prune them off as they appear?

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  3 роки тому +3

      Good question - BOTH: I do cut off runners as they appear AND the plastic prevents the runners' growth.

    Hi! Can these runners be dug up and planted all season or should this be done in the fall only? Thanks! Great videos!

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  4 роки тому +1

      Great question. Runners can be transplanted anytime in the growing season. Best success will be spring and fall. The challenge will be keeping them moist if you try in the warmest/driest months. Generally, the propagate and take off like 'weeds' !

    Hi Stace, I love the idea of keeping my berries (and veg) going into the fall-winter months. I see that you use PVC for your hoops, but I've read that PVC breaks down rapidly in the sun and elements and needs to be tossed in only a couple of years. True? What is your experience?
    Many thanks for your expertise and enthusiasm. Jeff

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  3 роки тому +1

      Good question Jeff
      I've used the same PVC pipes for hoop houses for 6-7 years with no degradation visible. i.e. no discolouring or brittleness.
      They bend as needed and get moved around and continue working well!
