It is not a choice. It is MANDATORY. That said, like the video mentions, mandatory conscription was only recently abolished, and most people actually view it quite positively. Virtually everyone's dad has been in the military in sweden. It helps create a sense of duty and camradery in the population. During the cold war, the swedish defense doctrine was such that sweden would fight a guerilla-style war in case of invasion, and avoid surrendering until it could offer no resistance whatsoever. The country is still full with oil silo's, bunkers and underground factory complexes, safe from bombs, artillery shells and prying eyes. The idea is to deter would-be invaders by making it too difficult and costly to win a war. Sweden also abolished its nuclear weapons program in a non-proliferation treaty with the US in the 1960's, which may have included security guarantees in case of nuclear war. IE; the US would defend sweden with nuclear weapons, should they be under attack by another nuclear-armed actor. The extent of the swedish nuclear weapons program was only unearthed in 2011 by a swedish investigative journalist, and it turns out sweden was the 4th first country in the world to develop a nuclear bomb, after the US, Soviet union and the UK. They could've assembled a bomb in 1954, but the parliament said no. Later, nuclear weapons research was made illegal in sweden, however this did not stop the project, which now had grown to involve some of the worlds greatest physicists at the time. The whole story is complicated and convoluted, but suffice to say that sweden could very easily become a nuclear nation in the future, should they decide to. The only thing stopping them is their own government, and the non-proliferation treaty. If russia goes after finland and the US elects trump, who wants to leave NATO, there is a good chance sweden will go nuclear.

You’re confusing a nation where politicians and bureaucrats are under the same scrutiny as business boards are by their shareholders and by the department of taxation, with a kleptocracy like Russia. Sweden, like almost all NATO nations, has a purely defensive military strategy (besides NATO being a purely defensive organization). Sweden doesn’t have, and will never have the military capacity to fight for for some ”land grab”. Even less any resources to be able to occupy some foreign land. Conscripts can’t be utilized in non-domestic military situations. Nether can they be used for policing of civilians domestically. There are a few professional soldiers available that may participate in peace keeping missions overseas if they sanctioned by the UN security council. And obviously any soldier, conscript or professional, can refuse any order that would be about sacrificing themselves for some war lord’s land grab. It’s not really like there is some severe punishments for a conscript refusing to follow orders. They do so because they are well aware what they are doing and why. So I assure you, Swedes would refuse any kleptocratic war lord’s demand. Please inform us where NATO has grabbed land! The only time NATO has gone to war was to subdue the aggression from al quaida and the Taliban regime that helped al quaida. And it was a UN security agreed to action of self defense. That many non NATO nations also participated in. But where the Afghans themselves mostly were the ones who fought against the Talibans. Then NATO has helped organize, by the UN security council cleared, peacekeeping missions. And obviously all the different nations in the UN security council would never agree to some land grab by NATO.

Sweden trusted Russia and reduced the Army from 30 brigades in 1989 to 1 brigade in 2008. The island of Gotland close to Russia had no troops at all. Sweden posed to threat to Russia at all in 2008. Why we shouldn’t trust Russia: This all changed in 2021 December and up to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. We in Sweden realized that Russia still was an expansionist colonial power wanting to rule eastern and northern Europe, bringing poverty, criminality, and corruption to us as well. Russia sent an open letter on the 17th of December 2021 to Sweden with demand and threats of "actions" if Sweden didn't agree to have its foreign policy controlled by the Russia Empire. Russia practically forced Sweden into NATO with treats of "consequences" and "actions" if Sweden didn't bend to the Russian Empire. This was before Russia’s full-scale attempt to exterminate Ukraine as a state and as a culture. Your very poor understanding of the background of Sweden’s decision to join NATO is appalling and sad. Why do you indirectly support the Russian Empire and its colonial expansion killing hundreds of thousands and forcing millions to flee? What on earth did we do in Sweden to be the targets of Russian threats by open documents and tv shows on how to invade Sweden all BEFORE we in Sweden decide to join NATO? How can we ever trust Russia again? Russia has repeatedly proven that it is a dangerous expansionist empire that is not to be trusted. Russia seems only to understand violence and military might. @@CalmBirdwingButterfly-xt3ftDefine “attacked” then. Such a sentence is meaningless when it is uttered by the mouth of Putin.

Are you kidding me?
When Sweden trusted Russia:
We in Sweden practically abandoned our defense because we believed that Russia had changed and become civilized stopping its constant attack on its neighbors. Russia has a long tradition of starting war after war with its neighbors for hundreds of years.
Russia is a colonial empire enslaving its neighbors, Russia enslaves its neighbors instead of enslaving Africans or people in the global south. But it’s all the same, shame on many people in the global south that openly supports Russian colonial expansion.
Sweden trusted Russia and reduced the Army from 30 brigades in 1989 to 1 brigade in 2008. The island of Gotland close to Russia had no troops at all. Sweden posed to threat to Russia at all in 2008.
Why we shouldn’t trust Russia:
This all changed in 2021 December and up to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Sad but true.

Gotland is about 300km from Kaliningrad.
Well Sweden made itself a target by joining War against russia on ukraines side and training and arming ukraine troops
How is sending people to war not illegal in 2024
putin doesnt like this.
This is what America needs...
Not gonna happen as long as the US invades nations like Vietnam and Iraq
Russia's army is 95% conscripts and look at what they did to Ukraine
America has such a large population and people lining up to join the army so it’s not that nessicary. Sweden on the other hand is about only the population of NYC so they need every person they can get so it’s more reasonable to reintroduce it.
Sweden also borders Russia by ocean and is much more threatened by war on the home front than America that is 2 oceans away from enemies
Welcome to NATO.
Wait.... as we say in the U.S. to the suckers that sign up: "Thank you for your service." 😂
Welcome to NATO
Probably had small military so need get civilians in the military only way do it , but good idea
The hat looks really stupid, to say the least
Meat shield for NATO😂
Absolutely horrible. Swedish people must resist at all costs not to die like too many people have before
