- A generous fellow, John M Mullins, donated a big bag of brass nuggets that are made to look like gold nuggets to be used in a resin project of my choosing. This immediately got me thinking about the California and Alaskan gold rush years ago with people dreaming of finding streams loaded with gold nuggets for the taking. Here is my interpretation of one of those dreams... in a vase. This is Elmwood, clear resin and brass "gold nuggets" formed into a meandering river of gold. And of course I'm still trying to figure out how to use resin effectively.....

My goal is to pair my love for medicine/surgery, video, photography, art and wood projects with my campaign to raise awareness for Operation Underground Railroad (OURRESCUE.ORG), an amazing group fighting child sex trafficking around the world. For someone that's just learning I think you are doing a good job this piece looks good I want to start turning as soon as I can afford to get a lathe being on disability money is a little tight I hope that I can do as good as you are keep on turning we all learn as we go remember it's supposed to be enjoyable and relaxing thanks for sharing this. I love that you are always coming up with new and unique designs. UV resin works as a glue, it won’t show through at all in the slow set resin. A UV flashlight works quickly to set it. The fumes are bad though so, wearing a respirator is a must. Thanks for all you do to support OUR! I’m hoping when the movie comes out, support for this very worthy org. will sky rocket.

Hello Dan, you asked a couple of questions. I thought I would lend you some of my experience. First, I don't know why you hollow first. I always do my cut-outs first, pour my epoxy then hollow. saves a lot of trouble. On your faceplate, you asked a question in a previous video about keeping it clean. I put a piece of wax paper between the faceplate and wood. Make it big enough so you can pull it up around your faceplate. I leave my faceplate on until I have to flip it around. Keeping bubbles out of your epoxy from your cutouts. Two ways I use. First about 3 coats of sanding sealer, that usually does the trick. The other way I've seen others use, I have not, but it should work. Mix up some epoxy and thin it with acetone. Then paint in on your edges. That seems like too much trouble for me, but it works. Take care and I hope I helped you. I like your videos, always give a like. I generally watch it on TV so I can't comment. Larry

Hey Dan, I just watched your "Vine Bowl" video. To make it easier to shape the vines, soak them in water over night. Shape them to desired shape and let them dry at least several days.

I probably do this wrong but for my resin molds I use cheap plywood for my molds then router the plywood off when dry. I found that I was routering my projects smooth any way so now I skip the step of removing the molds.

In the end you've tried something new, completed another piece with no injury to yourself, and while it wasn't exactly what you were trying to make, nature stepped in with a touch of chaos to give this piece the unique raw beauty it deserves.

This couldn’t have been said better. Obviously you have teens, my youngest just turned 19 a few day’s ago. He is about to go to University, it will be interesting to see him change over the next four years.
Thing don’t turn out the way you expect, but that doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. It is what it was meant to be, accept it, laugh at it, cry about it, then love it for what it is and how it’s changed you as well.
My oldest gave me lot’s of chaos, lots and lots of chaos. There were times that my wife and I held each other and asked god for help, and help he did. Next year he will have his masters in theology, and plans to be a Minister. To be honest, not the life I would have picked for him, but have learned to accept and love.

I haven't seen all your videos and possibly someone has suggested this already so sorry if I am repeating, have you tried 2 liter bottles for your centers, even juice and water bottles made out of the thicker plastic may help, I have used planters even for odd shaped projects. You can fill them with sand for weight, and for shallow you can use mixing containers. You can spray them with release or silicone. Just a thought, I've worked with resin for many years but I am just learning the lathe. Thanks for all you do! Your projects are beautiful!

After all that work gluing the brass in, you could have used a small amount of quick set resin and painted both sides of the brass with it. After the quick set hardens and some only take 15 minutes, then pour your resin. For the inside, use 6 mill plastic as it is very durable and fill the inside with marbles. It's more flexible to work with than the silicone mat you used and resin will not stick to it

@@artgivinghope If you want to stop the air bubbles from the wood, you could stabilize it with cactus juice and a vacuum chamber. That will stop all cracking and remove all the air from the piece. You could have done it after the first turning and before you glued in the brass. You can also use marbles to take up some volume so you don't have to use as much cactus juice even if it's reusable
I have to admit that I didn't think it would turn out but I was wrong!!

My son in law uses resin to make fishing rods . He has a machine that keeps the rod turning while the resin sets overnight so it’s perfectly smooth ….maybe you could use the same concept when filling small gaps or cracks or even to give a light coating all over the project ?

Hi Doc, another cool piece of art !! I use fostner bits now and again with my drill press and I’ve noticed that they seem to cut better at a slower speed. My set of bits actually has RPM speed stamped on the side of their shanks. Lowering the lathe RPM may help with the boring process and the smoking.
You've probably nailed that problem. I'll have to give it a try.
I have used inflated balloon to fill the inside of my bowls before i pour my resin with some limited success you can't do a deep pour it gets to hot.

You could probably turn a waste block out of some scrap wood to fill the inside of your piece. Just a thought. I have no experience with resin.

I wonder how that expanding foam would work? Like spray it inside the plastic bags inside and just make sure to trim it up if it expand too much? Because that stuff is easy to cut out . Just wondering if maybe that would work

There are two different channels I watch one is a fella in the UK Nick Zammeti who turns wood and resin, the other one is Positive Couple, he is in Russia and does phenomenal resin work.. you might find useful tips/ideas for taming the resin pours. I know you’re a busy guy, if you have a chance, I think those channels can be helpful

On your problem with the brass nuggets, and this is just thinking out loud, I haven't done it, you could stuff the vase super tight with crumpled newspaper, with or without duct tape lining first, then fill the brass in from the outside using thin or medium CA glue with accelerator set spray ... maybe a couple layers of brass and CA to get it all set up ... the CA won't melt with the heat of resin curing ... the air in the resin is a separate problem which is probably addressable ... love your OUR project ... will go through your Amazon links ... Yes...i just had to go a little slower. Used both traditional and carbide.

You can get a solid lathe for around $500-750. I like Wen and Laguna Lathe companies. If you're going to do it full time, spend more money upfront in the lathe, they take a beating. I get my resin from TotalBoat and Allumilite.
