Calculating The Circumference of The Earth

  • I read about how Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth and I knew that I had to try it myself. By just holding up a yardstick at solar noon in two states I was able to get a fairly accurate measurement of the circumference of the Earth.

    I don't actually believe that the earth is flat or anything, but whenever I see someone talking about the circumference or just referring to the spheroidal shape, my first sarcastic thought is something like, pff, the earth isn't round.
    Incidentally, my own experience of the roundness of the earth came when I went to southern Chile (about 55 degrees south latitude) and I looked at the night sky and the moon and the constellations were upside down. Being 100 degrees south of my normal latitude was pretty amazing.

    because we can see Chicago city from the other side of Michigan lake, means that, as per calculation :
    The Diameter of the earth is more than double of what is given to us; therefore, the surface of the earth is 4 times what we have on map.

    Math is incredible... You only need a length measuring device and a stick to almost know the volume of earth, if you calculate a bit. Great video, but I would have liked to know, who your friend is.

    Pythagorean Theorem , will give the length of the hypotenuse on a right angle triangle , it doesn't calculate the two unknown angles ! Can you please describe the method used for finding your angle , without using ''tan'' on a calculator ?

  • @sk8rdman
    @sk8rdman 5 років тому

    A couple things:
    1. A couple times you said parallel when I'm pretty sure you meant perpendicular.
    2. They way you say Pythagorean is pretty bizarre to me. Maybe it's just a regional thing, but in all the time that I've been using it, and also watching math related UA-cam channels, I've never heard anyone else say it like that.
    Otherwise, this was one of your more interesting videos, in my opinion. It would be a fun experiment to try for anyone who gets to travel between latitudes.

      The distance separating the Sun and Earth is not relevant. The Sun is distant enough that its light rays arrive here on Earth parallel to one another.

      @@nicholashpitts Sure we do. Ships disappear bottom first as they sail over the horizon. All other planets in our solar system and their moons are spherical, because of gravity. Our planet is spherical because of hydrostatic equilibrium. Caused by gravity.
      We live on a globe with a mean radius of 3440.1nm. It's all good.

    This experiment is a total failure. If the light source is smaller and over one spot, the other place would cast a shadow.

    • @vimalramachandran
      @vimalramachandran 3 роки тому +3

      But we know the rays are nearly parallel, which wouldn't be the case if the light source was close & local. Moreover, taking 3 or more points of measurement instead of just 2 also rules out a local Sun.
