Calculating The Circumference of The Earth
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 лип 2024
- I read about how Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth and I knew that I had to try it myself. By just holding up a yardstick at solar noon in two states I was able to get a fairly accurate measurement of the circumference of the Earth.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you would like to suggest a video idea please leave it in the comments, and if you enjoyed please like and subscribe! It was my pleasure to add a bit of science to your day!

you should've introduced your friend, the silence was awkward
just a quick "hey guys bla bla this is X and with her help we will measure the shadow's length"
Excellent video, Chase. One of your best.
I came from tom's video lol. This is a great channel im going to be sticking around with this channel for a long time
I loved it. Thank you so much for making this so real.
Underrated youtuber, good videos :)
I don't actually believe that the earth is flat or anything, but whenever I see someone talking about the circumference or just referring to the spheroidal shape, my first sarcastic thought is something like, pff, the earth isn't round.
Incidentally, my own experience of the roundness of the earth came when I went to southern Chile (about 55 degrees south latitude) and I looked at the night sky and the moon and the constellations were upside down. Being 100 degrees south of my normal latitude was pretty amazing.
That’s super cool! Those practical examples are the best.
cool video! you answered all my questions!
How did you go from 12 to 18 in 3 years

Time dilation
Great video!
because we can see Chicago city from the other side of Michigan lake, means that, as per calculation :
The Diameter of the earth is more than double of what is given to us; therefore, the surface of the earth is 4 times what we have on map.

Is it just me but for the first measurment (3:25) I see yard stick not pointing up at the right angle (90°)?
Can you also use that to measure the distance of the sun from earth?
Math is incredible... You only need a length measuring device and a stick to almost know the volume of earth, if you calculate a bit. Great video, but I would have liked to know, who your friend is.
This wouldn't be the internet without somebody nitpicking your pronunciation. It's "air-uh-TOSS-the-knees". :p GREAT VIDEO, though! Science is so cool.
Thank you! Should have double checked on that first.
This video is awesome 😎 I just don't have the patience to keep converting the miles to kilometres 😁
What are the TV segments that you are filming?
It’s for a kids TV show called Wonderama. They should be airing in the coming months.
Pythagorean Theorem , will give the length of the hypotenuse on a right angle triangle , it doesn't calculate the two unknown angles ! Can you please describe the method used for finding your angle , without using ''tan'' on a calculator ?
A couple things:
1. A couple times you said parallel when I'm pretty sure you meant perpendicular.
2. They way you say Pythagorean is pretty bizarre to me. Maybe it's just a regional thing, but in all the time that I've been using it, and also watching math related UA-cam channels, I've never heard anyone else say it like that.
Otherwise, this was one of your more interesting videos, in my opinion. It would be a fun experiment to try for anyone who gets to travel between latitudes.
Wow
I like your stuff, great video's but if it's science you want to talk about you should go metric,. Keep it up though!
Good point! I normally try to include both but I’m the future I’ll definitely try to include metric.
Have you any tips about making science videos?
I don’t really have any particular tips. You just gotta be passionate and do as much research as you can to try to understand the topic as well as possible.
ScienceC Thanks, that helped! Have a nice day!
Good luck!
You should talk about aryabhatta..
How far away is the sun?
Wow so gorgeous sir
Boy you grew up fast...
Pavements aren't level. You need to use a plumb line!
Era-s-tosthenes 😓
*TROPICAL CANCER*
only liked 4 my future wife
When did you verify the height of the sun? Lol you really think you live on a ball??
The distance separating the Sun and Earth is not relevant. The Sun is distant enough that its light rays arrive here on Earth parallel to one another.
@@marcg1686 you pretend it’s curved is my point
@@nicholashpitts This is not about the shape of the Earth. Rays of sunlight arrive parallel to one another.
@@marcg1686 MY POINT IS YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF EARTH CURVATURE. That’s all that matters. Let that sink in.
@@nicholashpitts Sure we do. Ships disappear bottom first as they sail over the horizon. All other planets in our solar system and their moons are spherical, because of gravity. Our planet is spherical because of hydrostatic equilibrium. Caused by gravity.
We live on a globe with a mean radius of 3440.1nm. It's all good.
This experiment is a total failure. If the light source is smaller and over one spot, the other place would cast a shadow.
But we know the rays are nearly parallel, which wouldn't be the case if the light source was close & local. Moreover, taking 3 or more points of measurement instead of just 2 also rules out a local Sun.
Very interesting I learned so much and u inspired me to start listening to my science teacher and learn more about this awesome wrld that was made by singularity
