I have a couple of You Tubers I follow that do 'minimalist capsule wardrobe' videos and I can't even get through their videos without thinking I need that item to make my capsule wardrobe complete and start scrolling to buy it. This has inspired me to make myself wait before completing the purchase. I usually end up returning what I bought after that endorphin rush has settled. Makes me feel so guilty because of the huge waste of resources to get that item delivered and returned. I want to be more thoughtful and stop any impulse buying! I don't want to unsubscribe from those You Tubers because they really are inspiring. A waiting period will solve it.
Me after cancer removal surgery which was a cherry on top of a difficult year of struggling in a new job, bullying in a 2nd job and other health problems: "I want to spoile myself" ( then going on a mini makeover shopping spree: cool pants, cool shirt , cool sunglasses and 2 awesome necklaces. And a pair of shoes).
My last impulse buy was ice cream bars at Costco. Because our kids and grandkids would need a treat when they came to visit. But really they were for me.
Because of all the videos I've watched on minimalism, I've realized that I was a collector. Like a personal antique store, I collected cute things from the past. When I was young, everything I had was handed down to me, and I still own and use some of those things. But then I started looking for those kinds of things to buy again and again. Tea pots, cream and sugar sets, platters and serving items, old individual salt bowls, glass everything, Fiesta ware, vases, unique kitchen tools, small ceramic or wooden boxes for display, carved jade items, jewelry, the list goes on and on. I didn't even know I was doing that. For years I had the space to display these items so I continued to own them. For 3 years I've lived in the smallest house I've ever owned, and when the clutter became unbearable last Christmas, that's when I knew I had to do something. It's hard to let go of those things, but they have no purpose and no longer give me pleasure. In fact some of these things are now a problem to get rid of. It's been hard in some ways, but they have to go. Thanks for all your videos helping me to choose a new path. I appreciate what you do for all of us.
I wanna thank you for this video it saved me $3,000 from spending at Samsung on pre orders, I wanted to cancel the orders but I didn't have the will power to do it but something inside of me kept telling me something was wrong then I came around to youtube looking for videos about minimalism then I found you and saw this very video and immediately went to Samsung website and canceled my orders because I realized I was just buying by impulse cause I didn't want to lose the "great deal" Now I feel so much better and happy that I didn't spend my credit on that now I don't have that money but I don't have to pay it either instead Im going to save the money and feel proud of my decision, so thanks a lot, I subscribed to your channel already, you are awesome!
Once I mulled over a bag for 6 months.. deduced it doesn't fit any of my other outfits and I'd have to buy too many new things. Great advice! We truly have to be very mindful of many marketing tricks.
I grew up chaotic, deprived and neglected. I do have a strong scarcity mindset, for good reasons. However, I found playing the ukulele destresses me and that helps me not to impulse buy these days.
Although I’m at a different time in my life than you, I find myself relating to you so much! My mom is a huge emotional hoarder and it used to effect me quite a bit. Now, I’m on my minimalism journey and am investing in quality prices over quantity. Love your channel and love you new hairstyle! 🚪
Thank you so much for sharing your story with me! And thank you for the compliment… did you see the video where I cut my hair, I actually donated 18 inches in memory of my mother: 🤗 ua-cam.com/video/0stja4IZ7CQ/v-deo.html
Oh gosh, I really needed this. I just bought lots of clothes for my daughter and I and feel pretty guilty! We wear everything so far and love it all, so I guess that's good. Now it's time to settle back into being grateful for what I have and stop accumulating.
When I do that (literally just did that 2 days ago) I hate the guilty feeling but I’ve learnt not to label it as negative and try to learn why it is there. Unusually because I’ve tipped something out of balance that needs fixing. I go through my wardrobe or whatever category I have bought and see if there is something to let go of. Because it reminds me of what I already have and I might return it if I don’t want to give something else up. At least is lessens the clutter and if I’ve overspent I might do a mini no buy until I’m back on track. If that doesn’t resolve the guilt .I sit a journal about it. I realised for me, buying anything makes me feel guilty so I’m working on that. When I feel the need to impulse buy again I remember the work I did after the fact and it makes me more likely to pause next time, although this last time I saw it as a sign I am healing and did deserve nice things so I’m letting the guilt go. Maybe for you part of the buying was about the time you enjoyed with your daughter and that is actually priceless 😊
For me I have got to point of wanting to create a warm inviting home. I am currently purchasing items for our home that are functional but also fit our theme. I’m wanting to create a home with my personal taste. Two things I want for myself is a reading nook so I have my eye on a ikea chair and footstool and a camera for my creativity.
If you go into it mindfully, it’s rarely a mistake! Have you tried making a mood board and visually staging your things? That’s what helped me design everything in our home!
🚪I used to impulse buy in the past. When i had bad day (at work ) or a good day. 2 years since i'm on minimalism ,intentional living journey. Whenever I want to get something that cost more I think for a while if I want this and for what reason. For example recently I got shoes from sale. I wanted those for a long time and we use shoes everyday so I saw this as a good reason. Those checkout sweets are in thoughts but I can resist them. I make a list at home what I want and plan my meals at home and for work. Basicaly i try to get only If I need something cuz its unfixable etc. Thanks for this video. Good remider for everyday 😀
Hi, I have a question: is it easier to be minimalist in Europe vs USA? Did you notice any difference? I was born and raised in Europe, moved to US and I have to tell that for me living in US I have so many more temptations to buy… maybe it’s just me🤔
I just watched a video with people attaching minimalist! I am still in shock! How can some people be so against minimalism? What's wrong with wanting to own less and focus more on other aspects of your life? What's wrong with wanting to see life at a more meaningful and deep level? To have more freedom to do things and more money to spend in other things like holidays or your hobbies! 🤔 Great video dear Marissa!
Oh really? What video was that, Mihaela? I wonder if I’ve seen that one. 🤔 thanks so much for watching, and I think the most important thing is to find what works for you! 🤗
@@AtoZenLife the channel is Sarah I Small changes Reacting to MINIMALIST HATER Comments 👀, some people are simply nasty :) ! Ah, I’ve heard of her channel! I will try to go check it out at a later point and maybe offer her some support - I definitely get these kind of comments as well, so I’m not surprised. 😅 Thanks friend!
@@AtoZenLife I never imagined that minimalism could get these kind of comments to be honest! So unfair! I left like 3 comments on her side to show my support! She seems so sweet! Thanks dear! It's a cruel world we are living in! But this won't make me change my mind in regard to minimalism! 🥰
My guess is people are just jealous. I have been trying to be minimal for about 2 years now and was recently garage saling with a friend and I mentioned a small set of plates were cute and I was going to buy them and she said in a very we snappy tone "oh what's the problem, did you declutter all of yours and now you need them??" I am on a decluttering journey, not quite to minimalism, but counters and surfaces clear, keeping necessities and a few sentimentals. Money journey is new. Slowly working on paying me first!
I'm so guilty of impulse buying on my phone. My hack to minimize those is to unsubscribe from newsletters and to delete shopping Apps from my phone. It helped me so much that it's not as simple as it was just to go on the app, scroll through, and order right away. Instead I have to go on the website, log in and kind of actively put so much efford in ordering online that I got to think during the process that it might be better not to order whatever I was about to buy without even thinking about it. Just setting little boundaries got me a long way so far. 😊
I'm seeing this at the perfect time in my life! We're in the process of sorting our belongings before purchasing a new home. I have definitely guilty of emotional spending. Big purge ahead!
🚪Starting in 2023, watching this at 1:30 am bc thinking about this is keeping me awake. Just found your channel tonight & everything you are saying is speaking directly to my issues. Thank you
Our impulse buy was a big one. BUT, it was something we had been hunting for for 10 years and planned to purchase if ever we found one. I’m not sure if that qualifies! 😂 It was a 9 foot antique carpenter bench to use as our kitchen counter in our kitchen renovation.
With minimalism my impulse buys are far more infrequent, but I did give in to strawberry filled croissants as a treat for my family as I waited too long at Costco for a prescription. They were a disappointment, I got the one in the box with no filling. I do think that buying some delicious treats from time to time from the grocery store helps us greatly avoid eating eating out which is quite expensive as a family of 7. I’ve often taken frugality too far in grocery shopping so I’m seeking a balance. Not everything we buy has to be an absolute need. Somehow ultra frugality actually feeds a scarcity mindset for me.
When you are bored and that makes you spend money, you can always replace it with going outside in nature or watch rather this channel to keep you on the right track.❤
I am working with impulsive buys, each time that I am going outside and see myself in the stores I think twice that I need it now and if not I just passed and keep going. Thank you, YOur videos and others similar are helping me to be mindful before any purchases. Love and Light to you and all your audiences.
Thank you so much for this. I tried a no buy year but failed miserably. And I think I suffer more psychologically because of that than the actual purchases. I actually use all I bought and I've declutered a lot of other things. But I need to stop cold turquey 🤦🏻♀️. 🚪🚪🚪Still on the journey. Take care
I do quite good with impulse buying… big exception are craft supplies: if there is a deal in my favorite store I often can not resist even though I do have so much stuff already. So at least I know my weak point. Have to work on that! 🚪
Last Spring, I went on a shopping spree for Summer clothes for me & our son. I blame the pandemic! Shopping was one of the first things it felt safe to get out & do. Plus, I was excited to buy new outfits for the big “return to normal.” I haven’t worn half the stuff I bought. I already donated items that didn’t work out after I had cut the tags off. My son outgrew some items quicker than I thought. Ahhh, big regrets! I will be more mindful going forward. Your tips will help!
🚪Grrrrrl! My husband and I loved IKEA - it was our happy place when we lived near one. And although we couldn't buy too much, we did buy some major purchases that unfortunately now I somewhat regret. As much as our IKEA furniture served us well, many of the pieces we had broke down because they weren't truly made to last. And yes, when I entered an IKEA, my mind literally went crazy with wanting to buy everything and anything.
Great haircut. Since I started budgeting , my spending habits improved. But sometimes I still have these impulses to buy things that are my interests right now, crafting. So to control that I limit my spending to a certain amount. Then it is budgeted and I don’t have to feel guilty about it but I do have to stick to my spending budget.
I just got back into budgeting with YNAB (You Need A Budget). WHY did I ever stop!! It's helping me so, so much! I'm spending more carefully now, and I also feel so much more in control of my money. I know what I have, where it's going, and every dollar has a job. It's so freeing! Trying to get my husband on board with it too. Maybe if I rave about it enough he will come around😉
@@hbnpiano I do YNAB too, but the free version, only to log in my expenses. I still prefer pen and paper. I would recommend One Income Budgeting. I prefer her budgeting style since all paychecks are laid down on one page so it’s easy to track everything, if you are into pen and paper too. Hopefully your husband would get into budgeting as well.😊
I buy one "going out" shirt every month for $25 or less and that becomes the one shirt I wear every time I go somewhere for that month lol. Often times it seeps into two months :D
🚪Thank you so much for making these videos. I recently discovered your channel, and have been binge watching since last Saturday! So much really good information and support for those of us wandering along this path!!! Your time, expertise and support is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!
Was just at Ikea and the staging is so true!! I’m glad we came out with literally 3 things! lol. I think this is such an important topic and these tips are so helpful. I’m starting to realize that mindset is really at the root of the problem because once you declutter it all, it’s keeping it going that’s hardest for me. Making sure I am asking the right questions when buying, being intentional about purchases, that’s where the real work is!!
For the items that I tend to impulse-buy I made a list where I notate every thing I buy (for me that's fabric which I don't want to skip completely because now and then, I just _need_ new clothes) with date and price. I set myself a fixed budget for each month and that helped a lot to consider if I really want to buy this fabric or not. Sometimes I'll go over the budget for example when I buy really good quality wool for a new coat, but then I buy less or nothing in another month :) Unsubscribing from newsletters is SO helpful! I unsubscribed from those that made me buy stuff I liked but did not really need and now I'll go and unsubscribe from the ones that I usually delete without even reading them :D
🙋♀️guilty of several of those impulse triggers for sure! Great tips which are all things I already knew but still impulse buy anyway. Hopefully I will hear your voice from this video playing in my head anytime I’m about to swipe on another online purchase ha ha!
🚪 my daughter and I finished decluttering and organizing her room yesterday, finally! It was a project for sure. The problem is that now when we’ve finished I have some new ideas for organizing that I’m preeetty sure she doesn’t want to hear about right now 😂 I’ll wait a week and then bring it up…
Thank you for your video's! It's really helps me to stay on a board and not give up! At the moment, i and my 2 sons and husband moved into our new apartment, and i thought it wkul be empty... but i'm sitting in the room between piles, bags and boxes. and i feel stress, anxtions and disappointed with myself, no sparkle of Joy in this stuffs. I have to go through this items again and again, like i did it already, and i hope, that one day, i will love seeing nothing to declutter anymore) 🚪
I get sudden ideas of need and that triggers me to either by now or list it - then buy (this includes fantasy) - you are talking to my soul. Have we met, you know me (ha ha) Lesley Love from England x
Thank you!!!!! 😊 100% spot on. I like to wait for a time frame before I buy anything. 1 month on average. If only I can get my partner to stop buying so much food thinking will never be able to get it due to covid.
If it's not food clothing or some regular bill like rent or internet, I don't buy it. One day I decided everything is rubbish and I haven't been wrong yet!
1. I order groceries online. This has helped me avoid stores and when I shop online, I usually stick to my list. 2. I add stuff to my wish list and I don't look at it for 30 days. Most of the time, I go "what was I thinking?!" and don't buy it. 3. I'm working on myself and practicing gratitude for what I have. But I am seriously a shopping addict. It has a lot to do with my feelings, loneliness, boredom, scarcity mindset. I have a bad relationship with food too, for the same reasons. I'll reach my goal weight and sabotage myself. It's a work in progress.
Ahhhh thank you!!! I’m guessing that you didn’t see the video where I cut it for cancer wigs? ua-cam.com/video/0stja4IZ7CQ/v-deo.html I feel SO LIGHT now, in more ways than one - thank you! ☺️
I recently found your channel and love love it and have been binge watching! The other day I put myself on a craft supplies spending freeze for an undetermined amount of time as I have so many I haven’t used.
Good idea on the craft supplies! I'm sure I could do a spending freeze on that too! Recently I got into watercolors, so I bought a few things for that. I'm really enjoying learning to watercolor paint, though, so that's good. However, I have so many other crafts I enjoy, and lots of supplies. So I should be good for a long while😊
Craft supplies seem to be a very common thing that people are struggling with when I look at the comments on my videos! You are not alone, my friend! A spending freeze is great, you can also budget only a certain amount per month like others have shared above, and always always be real with your time and space! 👏👏👏 Welcome to the fam!
New sub. Great video. I did a no-buy year in 2019. Unsubscribing store emails ready helped. And not physically going into stores. I don’t do online shopping so that wasn’t an issue for me.

🚪!!! I have been on my journey for a year now. I’m almost 18 years old now, and I find it very difficult as a teenager sometimes. Especially because the teens around you are most of the time REALLY NOT a minimalist and sometimes think like what is this lol. I think my impulse buys are a lot from advertising. So again social media.
🚪Thank you. I have just started this journey, have done a lot of decluttering and still lots to do but I am getting there. This is so helpful. By the way your hair is beautiful.
Marissa, I am curious if you and Mr. Zen prefer an Eastern floor bed to the British Empire "raised bed" many Americans still use? I understand numerous health benefits come from utilizing floor beds. We are considering the switch and I hope you can give your opinion, as well as where we can purchase them. 🚪 Thank you 😊

When i‘m stressed out, emotional buying is still a big part. I hope to quit that soon.
Thanks so much! I’m hoping that for you too. ❤️
When you are bored and that makes you spend money, you can always replace it with going outside in nature or watch rather this channel to keep you on the right track.❤
🚪
I am just starting my minimalist journey and really enjoying your videos.
Decluttering like a boss I've been packing stuff up like a crazy woman.
I really love the way you explain... my english is very poor and your spelling makes it very very very easy to understand. Thank you!!!
I am working with impulsive buys, each time that I am going outside and see myself in the stores I think twice that I need it now and if not I just passed and keep going. Thank you, YOur videos and others similar are helping me to be mindful before any purchases. Love and Light to you and all your audiences.
Goodness, the nostalgia aspect is very relatable! Thank you for this great video 😊
I think craft supplies are the most common comment so far, other than suites at the checkout aisle - knowing is half the battle, right? 🙌
It's so hard for me because I love shopping. It's all my friends and I do. I always end up buying stuff I don't need.
It’s soooo tempting! And the food is really delish. 😋
Back when I was a book person I did the same thing with books! It’s a great filter. 👍
I’ve heard good things about YNAB 🙌
Sometimes I'll go over the budget for example when I buy really good quality wool for a new coat, but then I buy less or nothing in another month :)
Unsubscribing from newsletters is SO helpful! I unsubscribed from those that made me buy stuff I liked but did not really need and now I'll go and unsubscribe from the ones that I usually delete without even reading them :D
I absolutely have a scarcity mindset and I’m desperately trying to stop impulse buying.
The nerve of UA-cam to put a Shopping ad in the middle of this video 😂
Oh man, how dare they! 😅
I just love you so much. Thank you for being real. So greatful. Thanks for making the world lighter&brighter☮️🐝with U Fam
🙋♀️guilty of several of those impulse triggers for sure! Great tips which are all things I already knew but still impulse buy anyway. Hopefully I will hear your voice from this video playing in my head anytime I’m about to swipe on another online purchase ha ha!
🚪I have got rid of alot of things ,saving money now and not having to clean as much. I lov it
🚪 my daughter and I finished decluttering and organizing her room yesterday, finally! It was a project for sure. The problem is that now when we’ve finished I have some new ideas for organizing that I’m preeetty sure she doesn’t want to hear about right now 😂 I’ll wait a week and then bring it up…
From i found u yeaterday i have sorted and cleamed and dumped stuff all day yesterday...tidied up outside and sorted car today ...
Thank you Marissa!!! It really helps what you do.
We went to Ikea today. After thinking for days about what we needed. We left with ONLY and just ONLY what we went there to get. I thought of you!
Wow, you are a BOSS Silvia! Fist bump 👊
Step by step 😜
It’s a learning curve for sure, Lesley 🤗
Marissa!!! You’re new HAIR 😱😱😱IT LOOKS SO GOOD!!!
Ahhhh thank you!!! I’m guessing that you didn’t see the video where I cut it for cancer wigs? ua-cam.com/video/0stja4IZ7CQ/v-deo.html I feel SO LIGHT now, in more ways than one - thank you! ☺️

It was a soda out walking…I was too hot, should have come prepared with water 🥵
🚪 i'm on my journay for two years now. I love your videos.

🚪
Great video and I love how well spoken you are...I think you mentioned once, you are a speech therapist?!
Grandioses Video danke, das werde ich wiederholt anhören
Bitte zehr! 🤗
I love your video editing!!
Thanks a lot Stephanie, it’s nice to have my hard work appreciated! 🤗🤗🤗
New sub. Great video. I did a no-buy year in 2019. Unsubscribing store emails ready helped. And not physically going into stores. I don’t do online shopping so that wasn’t an issue for me.
Did I need this video! I’m doing better though. By the way, your hair is so lovely short!
Glad you are doing better with this and thank you! 🙏
🚪Always great tips and inspiration to define needs vs wants. Thank you!
This was me just like a year ago. All of this. Thank you for the helpful video. And yes, just like everyone else said, your hair is SHARP I LOVE IT.
Marissa can you pls consider running an online budgeting school for chaotic budgeters and procrastinators. I need help and support xxx

Very helpful to me
Watching this while eating the French fries I ordered, because I had a bad day… and I deserved them 🧐
I am a total emotional eater/shopper.
Thank you for sharing your tips GOD BLESS YOU N YOUR FAMILY 💓
Thanks Olga, and to you as well!
Thanks for sharing these brilliant tips! Love your hair!
Hi, I really like your sofa and dining set, would you mind to share us where you got them please? They're so lovely😍
🚪 I’ve started my journey! 3 weeks in
Fabric for a project. Kind of needed the item I was making but could have waited a while.
🚪Thank you. I have just started this journey, have done a lot of decluttering and still lots to do but I am getting there. This is so helpful. By the way your hair is beautiful.
Thank YOU for your kindness (and for being here).
🚪 minimalism journey!!!
Thank you 😊
I love love your new hair cut. You look beautiful. OXOX
Another great video! Love your new hair cut!
Love your haircut! Beautiful! And love your channel. I am learning a lot from you! Thank you 🤗♥️
Thanks Vivian! Did you see the video where I cut my hair off and donated it for cancer wigs to honor my mother? ua-cam.com/video/0stja4IZ7CQ/v-deo.html 🤗 Have a great week!
Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Sure thing, Pippy 👍
I really like the dinning chairs . Could you share where they are from?
Hi there, this link is for Germany FYI : www.wayfair.de/moebel/pdp/mack-milo-esszimmerstuhl-anton-brba8720.html?piid=29485875. Sorry to say the gray is sold out for now, but these chairs are FABULOUS..comfy, and practical.
Excellent advice.
