I can't even tell you how important these guys ( along with Steve Lukather, Vai and Satriani ) are to my life.
I was disappointed because I didn't get an opportunity to meet John at NAMM this year due to the large crowds and limited time. By the time Sunday rolled around, I was feeling wiped out after spending the previous 3 days at the trade show. So, I decided to reschedule my flight back home to an earlier time that morning. As I boarded the plane (anticipating sitting in the very last row...), I looked to my right and THERE HE WAS! I didn't want to be rude, so I didn't ask for a picture, but I shook his hand and thanked him for doing what he does so well! What a polite and cool guy!

I've met and talked with Steve over a dozen times throughout the years. He is so down to earth and just a humble and nice guy...
Saw the Dregs open for Dream Theater back around 2000. I swear Petrucci sounded like Mini-Morse, hearing them back-to-back. It was uncanny.
Yeah you can see how big of an influence Steve was on John. And with good reason, Steve is a technical and innovative behemoth

Steve is my all time fave guitarist and John is just a monster, MONSTER player, one of the best around today. 2 incredibly gifted, game changing musicians who somehow have managed to remain genuine, real people.

Nice post. I really enjoy seeing them interviewing each other. They are so relaxed and both so down to earth.
I remember Petrucci talking years ago about his influences, and he credited the "Steves" (Morse and Vai) and the "Als" (Lifeson, DiMeola and Holdsworth). You can hear all of it in his playing. So cool to see them here together.

they're not wrong at all about the lack of ear training. youtube is great for learning hand, pick, and finger positions, but man oh man has ear training gone away. i struggle teaching the skill to my students. i cheated through it because i'm synaethetic, but sometimes you'd think even intermediate players were tone-deaf. they're on a run, miss a fret, and all of a sudden their run is shifted up by a semitone without them realizing it.
if your ear is trained, you'll learn how to read your fingerboard much faster. i'm not talking about shredders either. i teach classic rock and some blues, so not exactly light speed runs.
Damn ear training ... now I clearly hear, that my bends are out of tune :D
and cant listen to lot of radio stuff (shit) ... lot of so called young talets sings soooo out of tune, who's producing these days?

Steve ' s obsessive practicing made him great, got to wonder though if it contributed to his wrist injury....seems to be something hitting a lot of virtuosos, Liona Boyd, Badi Assad, the late Keith Emerson.
Oldsters such as Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin are still going strong.
That's true but Steve spent 20 years touring with Deep Purple, almost 2 hours shows, a lot more shows than Dimeola and Mclaughlin.
I'm not so sure about that, however, I do know that since at least the early 1980s Di Meola and McLaughlin employ stretch and strengthen exercises to prevent and alleviate some of the painful symptoms associated with repetitive stress injuries to wrists, forearms, and fingers.
No doubt about it. The fact that he practices like a mad man (he said in an interview that he's had his #1 refretted like 10 times just from wear on the frets and that's not even the guitar he practices with) coupled with his picking style - he's a lefty playing righty which is why (I think) he holds the pick like he does - and you've got a recipe for wrist wear.
Plus, if you listen to him play an electric w/o an amp you can hear how HARD his pick attack is. Bet that doesn't help.

Petrucci is looking kinda small now :) JK I think both are great, but I think Steve is probably one of the most fluid phrase rs, almost like the Tchaikovsky(known for a deep sense of melody) of guitar.
I'm a HUGE Steve Morse fan but I've never gotten over how much he literally HATES the bootleg culture and youtube, etc.
I hate the scumbags who sell an artists work for money as much as the next guy, but when you are a fan of someone it's cool to be able to see and take in as much about them as you possibly can.
Watching this video for instance - every few weeks I'll do a search on youtube for "steve morse" just to see if there is anything new. In the "old days" when I was a teenager I wouldn't get a chance to see the band until they played live (which made the live performance that much better) so I sort of see his point. I'm kind of in the middle.
I get it if you don't want anything to be put up there without your permission, but everyone sees it differently.
In Steve's defense, he isn't militant about it. It just seems to bother him a whole lot.
Everybody has a different opinion about it. I was watching a video with Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush
and he seems to think differently about it. But I can understand why Steve doesn't like it
It is what it is and it isn't going to revert back to the way it was. It is the reason why Concerts are so expensive now,
that is because artists don't make much (if any) off albums. But as the listener i like it because I can access any band from any time period right at my fingertips
rbagel55 - I agree with everything you're saying. As I said above, I can't stand ANY scumbag who would make MONEY from someone else's work.
On the other hand, personally, I don't see Morse losing money because I want some bootlegs of his concerts. It's still not same as seeing him live and I'm STILL going to buy ANYTHING he puts out.
I want any and all material I can get by him. I wish he'd put out a SMB album every few months, but that's not going to happen.
I'm not sure if we mean the same thing by "bootleg". I'm talking about a guy who goes and records a live show and puts it up on the internet for folks to see. NOT a guy who rips a CD and makes that available. I"m TOTALLY against that. To me, that is stealing.
I don't think artists are losing too much money from guys making crappy bootleg recordings of their concerts and making them available on the internet. If they are, I would get it's a REALLY small number. Now, are folks losing money because of the MP3 culture and the fact that you can search pirate bay (or fill in your favorite torrent site here)? You bet they are.
If THAT's what you are talking about, then yes, I agree. That's why concerts are more expensive. The artists I listen to (like Morse) are never more than about $25.00 bucks anyway. Always have been, always will be.
I also think it's why bands are having to do all these "meet and greet" and "fantasy camps" to make money these days - coz album sales sure aren't going to do it. For guys like Morse, they never really did anyway.
I just never understood why he would care if some dude stood up there and taped their shows and made them available for other folks to listen to for free. I figured he'd be the type of guy who would encourage that. I'm not slamming him, I"m a huge fan of his. I just don't get that about him, but everyone has their reasons and a right to their opinion on the matter.
Now, if Deep Purple would ever FINALLY just hang it up so Steve could get out and tour with a real band (his band) I'd be a happy man.
