I'm a pretty serious/decent guitar player but a guy like Steve Morse and a few others are geniuses on guitar. Big difference between your average UA-cam shredder and Steve Morse.
What an awesome guitarist. If I had to pick one musician to listen to, say if I was in prison or stranded at sea, it would be Steve Morse. His instrumental pieces are like reading a great book with intriguing plot twists and complex characters. Inspirational. Never ever get tired of his music.
Very nice guy, and a very thoughtful player. Not really into his stuff, but I can appreciate his workman-like approach to the guitar and also his kindness to explain everything so well
@Samí Warrior Grew up listening to everyone and everything. Only regret is that I ever listened to anyone. I have always had an ear for stuff and been amazed how more than two people can collaborate on anything let alone persevere and practice their art. I just enjoy hearing things that others created and can get remotely close to the sound. Too bad more people don't have a hobby or maybe we wouldn't be seeing this nonsense currently!
i remember being introduced to Steve and the Dregs in the late 80's. Changed my life musically. The creativity in his writing is epic. Not only is his playing amazing but the way he can write and play so many complex styles of music. From Bluegrass, Rock, Jazz , and Classical. A true musical genius.
It is always an inspiration to see a player that is so classically trained to play amazing fingerstyle to be able to use a pick like this. He is a master of all styles.
That's because he's using a small practice amplifier (as he stated) at a low volume. The proximity of the amplifier is more distant from the microphone on the camera than the guitar, hence the acoustic properties of the guitar are more dominant.
Awe... Steve's getting old... This vid made me feel it man, damn... this cat has been banging it out for 4 decades! Much Love ...Much respect... Much Music... still got that attitude!
I've been listening to this guy since I was a kid, I got my first speeding ticket listening to tumeni notes. He's an innovator and an amazing guitarist.
he is so good it's freaking ridiculous - those harmonics he gets are INSANE - and a great, natural teacher to boot - clearly he's so confident and accomplished in his playing he has no problem sharing his knowledge.
@@tysonhatch Agreed. Steve has a particular picking technique that's highly articulated and unique (especially when combined with his left hand patterning), but not as fast as many of the metal guys who have come since.
steve is actually left handed, probably explains the unusual picking style but makes his ability all the more outstanding, this guy can play anything, huge respect.
The little shop in my town had one of these (used) and I checked it out closely. This guitar is insane. The controls are configured in such a way that you can get a million different tones. There is a video somewhere on UA-cam that explains it in detail. But the real reason it is so killer is the artist it's made for. Steve is in the top five, perhaps top three in the world IMHO.
Richard Fortus has similar technique of holding picking... It has certain relaxing feel when you play it like that.. and when I saw how fast and clean he can play I was amazed
I noticed visiting this upload 10 years ago with the comment wishing to have such a accurate right hand..now I wish I had practised my right hand from that moment.
I saw and met him in January 1990 at an in-store clinic in GC. He was fantastic and realistic in his comments and came across as a no nonsense kinds guy. Very different from most stars in the music business.
It's referring to the frequencies of the sounds basically, high's = treble, low's= bass, mid's = midrange tones. different pickups have different tonal qualities.
For all those wondering Steve has tried altering his picking style> He has said what he did gain in speed did not allow him to do his earlier in particular he couln't articlate arpeggios and hybrid picking! Steve is an awsome and very humble muscian as anyone who has the pleasure of meeting him will tell you. I have met mim several times and he's cool guy with great sense of humor!
For anybody interested the reason there is no bevel on the guitars "arm rest". It Is because it mimics Steve's Frankenstein guitar which had a Telecaster body.
Yes, I wish more people realized this fact. There is a certain "shredder" from the 80's that gets ssssoooo much love but he is sssoooo over rated and Steve Morse is 5x's the player!! Life is not fair.
I got a chance to see steve a long time ago with Dixie Dreggs, but never with Deep Purple that has got to change. Steve is so cool to share his guitars and guitar licks is such a personable way. I want my friends over on FB to check this out.
yes - he's using his thumb and middle finger to hold the pick and using his index finger to touch the octave 12 frets above the lower notes he's fretting with his left hand. Eric Johnson and Tommy Emmanuel (sp) also are extremely good at this technique.
My HSH setup has 2 DPDT switches for the humbuckers. Up is double coil, middle-off, and down is single coil neck or reverse phase bridge. The single coil mid pup has a push on/off latching button slightly offset between the throw switches. 1 stacked vol. for neck and middle (500/250k ohms) and a vol. for the bridge pup. Push/pull dual master tone. Independent wiring. Treble bleed for mid and neck pups. 10 minutes on this axe and you’ll see how user friendly she can be. So many combinations and tones! My only electric and it’s a blast to play! Originally an ‘83 Washburn Force 2 hardtail with Wonderbar and locking nut. $300 total investment and it’s a DIY. (NOT for sale😮)
Steve's graced the covers of the biggest guitar mags, won many readers polls, played arena rock nightly in front of thousands of screaming fans. I've seen jazz greats playing to under 10 people; that's what I call underrated. But Steve is truly great; of that there's no doubt; I just think there are people as great who will never have 1/100th his audience, which makes "one of the most underrated" a strange phrase to apply to him.
Damn fast insane flying fingers and he isn't even out of second gear. Saw him w/ the Dixie Dregs way back. It's like he steps out of the time stream . He can cram Way toooo many notes into a millisecond. And all the time making,it look really easy like a walk in the park. He is the ultimate. And he is humble ya kno he doesn't need a shoehorn to get his head thru doorways. Long love the king.
Gawd Damn Mr. Morse, Of course you're an amazing player (Always have been!) But Your expressions within your stringed communicato is sublime Sir Daaaaaamn.
@024leoj its awesome! i managed to figure it out!!! you've just got to tapp the corresponding high frets whilst hitting the low notes. really good fun!
When he plays the scales are different than Vai's but the fingering looks similar. Steve is a very acomplished guitarist. He was influenced by and spent time with John Mclaughlan so you young guys remember Steve didn't grow up with Eddy Van Halen and the modern speed picking you guys grew up with. His influences lead him in a different direction because he is from a different time. Still pretty fast for an old guy.
leave it to Steve to realize the camera would be picking up his picking noise more than the amp. That's a problem in so many youtube demos. Surprised when he said that the cameraman didn't back up and zoom in... oh well. Steve is still #1!!!
This is the school that they can never belong Guthrie, Gilbert, Sfogli, Timmons, and of course Malmsteen. Petrucci made a great effort, and is the reason why today is Petrucci. But the master remains the master and of course the Morse swin is light years ahead of all these shredders without musical spirit. Thanks Steve, inexhaustible source of inspiration not only for guitarists, for millions of musicians worldwide. Eternally grateful.
What a great guy, a nice smile and a BRILLIANT guitarist!!
Same for all the Dregs members.
They always looked like they're having fun!
I'm a pretty serious/decent guitar player but a guy like Steve Morse and a few others are geniuses on guitar. Big difference between your average UA-cam shredder and Steve Morse.
This guy is one of the best.....truly talented musician who never stopped getting better
One of the most underrated guitarists of all time.
Absolutely.
Unsung Hero
What an awesome guitarist. If I had to pick one musician to listen to, say if I was in prison or stranded at sea, it would be Steve Morse. His instrumental pieces are like reading a great book with intriguing plot twists and complex characters. Inspirational. Never ever get tired of his music.
Very nice guy, and a very thoughtful player. Not really into his stuff, but I can appreciate his workman-like approach to the guitar and also his kindness to explain everything so well
Steve Morse, just casually sitting in a lounge room with a tiny amp playing better than 99.9999% of us ever will....
Probably add a couple nines after the decimal.
@Samí Warrior U depress me! On the other hand a little equipment and a decent guitar can go a long way!
@Samí Warrior 63 and don't worry about how good others are but get a kick still anytime I can learn something that makes my motor run!
Sorry, regret listening to anyone telling me I couldn't make a living playing music. Was never the intent.
i remember being introduced to Steve and the Dregs in the late 80's. Changed my life musically. The creativity in his writing is epic. Not only is his playing amazing but the way he can write and play so many complex styles of music. From Bluegrass, Rock, Jazz , and Classical. A true musical genius.
I agree....but yet he gets dogged by a bunch of idiots on the internet who aren't good enough to even shine his guitar. Unbelievable...smh
at 2:42 he finally gave sense to the tone knob
Great point. I learned something.
06:16
The answer to all people who ask "how do you become that good?"
Saw him play when I was 13 and been a fan ever since.
That dude is ageless.
I love these instructional vids......so personal, it's like you're sittin' there with him.
I could listen to Steve Morse noodle all day every day.
He's bloody good. Old-school.
My favourite guitar player and all round good guy too. He has amazing chops, taste and tone.
Steve Morse è per me il più grande chitarrista al mondo. Nessuno mi trasmette le sue sensazioni/emozioni. Special one.........
Deep Purple is such a famous band they could of pretty much called any guitarist in the world to play with them. They called Steve Morse. 'nuff said.
I've been a fan for a long time. Love your playing. Thanks for all the great sounds!
My gosh he is a heavy handed player. One of my all time favorites.
It is always an inspiration to see a player that is so classically trained to play amazing fingerstyle to be able to use a pick like this. He is a master of all styles.
steve morse is a monster of guitar..love his tone, technique, feeling, everything, complete player..
That's because he's using a small practice amplifier (as he stated) at a low volume. The proximity of the amplifier is more distant from the microphone on the camera than the guitar, hence the acoustic properties of the guitar are more dominant.
excellent versatility!! love your right hand ... you have taught me soo much in music thank you steve morse!
3:40....What chords is Steve using for this amazing etherical sound? Does he use this lick on any tune/album of his?
4:18
he is so good it's freaking ridiculous - those harmonics he gets are INSANE - and a great, natural teacher to boot - clearly he's so confident and accomplished in his playing he has no problem sharing his knowledge.
Going to see him on Wednesday in Seattle 2nd row center stage. (!)
One of the coolest guitarists around.
Steve, you are such an inspiration on so many levels. When I grow up I want to be just like you, but I'd better get started because I'm already 64!
Great demonstration of using the tone control to shape the tone!
The harmonics he does in Sometimes i Feel like Screaming are the best i`ve ever heard. Along with the ones in Mary Jane from Megadeth
Been following Steve and the Dregs since the 1970's. Without a doubt, the fastest most creative guitarist on the planet.
Now you're a true old school fan. Respect. The Dregs material is by far my favourite, I wish they'd get together to record a new album
warlord1958 - Steve is great! Very enjoyable to listen too. Fastest? No.
@@tysonhatch Agreed. Steve has a particular picking technique that's highly articulated and unique (especially when combined with his left hand patterning), but not as fast as many of the metal guys who have come since.
This is great because "Take It Off The Top" and "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" are two of my favorite Morse bits and Bob's your uncle right here!
Recently had the chance to hang with "Steve Morse" After his show in Florida. He is amazing
Steve is an amazing player ! Such a legacy 🤘🎸
I used to work in a music store and we had a used Burnside (owned by Guild) Steve Morse model back in '87 or so. Weighed a TON but sounded great.
still one of the most amazing guitarists - great musician and humble and even greater person.
Monster player this guy.he did some awsome stuff with dixie dregs
I know. esp .Industry Standard
I saw him 35 years ago. Always loved his playing.
steve is actually left handed, probably explains the unusual picking style but makes his ability all the more outstanding, this guy can play anything, huge respect.
Love that guitar. Morse has a huge body of work, and all of it exceeds...
turn the amp up Steve!
Even as I watch this discussion about Steve's gear, I'm reminded that it's the player, not the gear, that makes the music special.
Morse has always been a clean player lots of melody in his playing nice to listen to,
his picking is very clean,
I saw and met him in January 1990 at an in-store clinic in GC. He was fantastic and realistic in his comments and came across as a no nonsense kinds guy. Very different from most stars in the music business.
dude steve... thank you for contributing soooo much to music... love u bro

What an incredible right hand he has!!!
Thanks for the tour!
For anybody interested the reason there is no bevel on the guitars "arm rest". It Is because it mimics Steve's Frankenstein guitar which had a Telecaster body.
I MET HIM AT MY FIRST NAMM SHOW HE SIGNED A PIC FOR ME VERY COOL GUY VERY TALENTED GUITARIST YOU ROCK STEVE

Awesome show here in Halifax! LOVED it ~ come back anytime (SOON)! :D
Can somebody tell me what the pick holder on the body of his guitar is called? Thank you.
Monster player!!!
Yes, I wish more people realized this fact. There is a certain "shredder" from the 80's that gets ssssoooo much love but he is sssoooo over rated and Steve Morse is 5x's the player!! Life is not fair.
when i saw purple some time ago it was mainly a steve morse show... and it was fucking awesome!
I got a chance to see steve a long time ago with Dixie Dreggs, but never with Deep Purple that has got to change. Steve is so cool to share his guitars and guitar licks is such a personable way. I want my friends over on FB to check this out.

STILL the BEST from back in the day when the Dregs were virtually a Vandy house band!
Thanks Steve!!!!
Fantastic handwork !

Steve, you can make ANY guitar or amp sound good!

one of the top 10 best EVER!!
wow this is really cool...great guitarist just learned some new things! the purple guitar is beautiful!
always like morses no frills approach to guitar!
Steve is incredible. I love his work. I have one of these guitars. It’s one of the easiest gits to play. Awesome tones too.
Damn fast insane flying fingers and he isn't even out of second gear. Saw him w/ the Dixie Dregs way back. It's like he steps out of the time stream . Love those chord sequences.
Gawd Damn Mr. Morse, Of course you're an amazing player (Always have been!) But Your expressions within your stringed communicato is sublime Sir Daaaaaamn.
thats the widest alternate picking ive ever seen
I completely agree .... I loved the tone of that guitar. Didn't it have a strat neck and like a zillion pickups and switches? Ahhhhh the 80's!
Lol. I'm not sure if it's you who posts this all over the place, but I love it!
Great player. Loved his time with Kansas.
Great interview thanks
Best ~~~~~ one of the most creative guitarist & composer ever.
He is GREAT with his guitar!!!!
@024leoj its awesome! i managed to figure it out!!! you've just got to tapp the corresponding high frets whilst hitting the low notes. really good fun!
2:00 to 2:14
2:50 to 3:24
Oh man, just phenomenal stuff. I listen to it over and over.
Shawn Boozer that harmonics, what song is come from?
even on a cheap amp you can hear he has the tone!! it's all in fingers dynamics
he's a monster very underated steve kills most of shreders and others
When he plays the scales are different than Vai's but the fingering looks similar. Steve is a very acomplished guitarist. he is like flying a jet amazing
Really snapping those wires. I wonder what gauge he's using?
This was filmed in The London Hotel in New York. When I stayed there the "resident" rock star was Paul Weller - damn it, wish it had been Morse!
He is so good! And nice. Ultimate electric guitarist.
Steve Morse is no doubt one of the very best players out there!
\m/
leave it to Steve to realize the camera would be picking up his picking noise more than the amp. That's a problem in so many youtube demos. Surprised when he said that the cameraman didn't back up and zoom in... oh well. Steve is still #1!!!
Damn he plays so fucking hard.
this is TOP MASTER of the guitar -- just watch his PERFECT right hand technique with perfect LEFT HAND TECHNIQUE - this guy is highly INTELLIGENT !!!
A Big inspiration in my playing,
Steve has always amazed me....love demo-ing with those cool Dixie Dregs tunes!
This is the school that they can never belong Guthrie, Gilbert, Sfogli, Timmons, and of course Malmsteen. Petrucci made a great effort, and is the reason why today is Petrucci. If this guitar had a "normal" strat pickgaurd custom cut for these pickups, i would be ordering one!
