MESA/Boogie Tone Summit: John Petrucci, Doug West and the JP-2C

  • John Petrucci and Mesa’s Director of R & D, Doug West, came together in McKinney, Texas at the beautiful Guitar Sanctuary Performance Hall to discuss all things Tone, amps, guitars, gear, and the inside design story behind the JP-2C.
    In this video, John discusses the three main sounds that he uses while playing some Dream Theater riffs and improvisation to demonstrate a variety of tones from the JP-2C.
    Doug shares his insights from the design side and his work alongside Mesa Founder & Designer Randall Smith to develop what is the most accurate re-issue of the famed Mark IIC+ circuit in the JP2C.
    Great playing and tones, an amazing room and a friendship between John & Doug for almost 30 years led to a memorable event of laughs, learning and excellent Tone.
    Recorded with John Petrucci’s Signature Ernie Ball Music Man JP 16 six and seven string guitars into stereo JP2C heads and two Rectifier 4x12 Traditional cabinets. Mic’d with a Sennheiser 421 and a Beyer Dynamic 160 on one side and a AER AR22 and an SM57 on the other cab with a stereo pair of Earthworks QTC-50 Room mics blended in at 10% of the final mix.

      There's that EVIL guitar word again...was....lol. I know how it is though man, guitar is a lifelong journey and tastes change...BUT a Music Man & a Strat are total keepers. As Dave Mustaine once said: "Hindsight is always 20/20" Hope the EBMM wasn't a BFR

    I bought a Majesty Monarchy and couldn't be happier. As other's have said, it plays effortlessly. The clean tones resonate throughout the guitar like an acoustic, as the neck is actually part of the main body up through the bridge, not a bolt on like other electrics. I also just bought a Fishman Triple Play and the sounds really sustain like crazy.

    Hes right. This is the best thing about Boogies.. they don't distort chords like a Marshall does. Marshalls are awesome for single notes, but under lots of distortion the chords turn muddy. Not on a Boogie, you can hear every string/note under lots of gain still.

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  7 років тому +1

      Hi George - Pretty sure that the cabs in this video are Traditional 4x12 (the smaller of the two) but they may be Standards. That said, John always prefers the Traditional 4x12s for being a bit tighter and more balanced while still offering excellent punch, bass and balance. BTW - in the JP2C demo, that is confirmed to be a Traditional 4x12 Straight. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Random question. Some amps have the Mesa logo on the grill (Rectifier) where as some amps have the Boogie logo on the grill (Mark series). Is there an actual purpose for that such as different people in the design process or is there no rhyme or reason? Great video!!

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  7 років тому +11

      Good question! Originally, the company was called Mesa Engineering and the first amp was called a Boogie. Then, both the company and amps began to be referred to as Mesa/Boogie and it just kind of stuck. In the 90s, with heavier music finding favor and the Rectifier and other Mesa's becoming popular, the Mesa Engineering logo seemed a better fit for that heavier era and the amps being designed for those styles. Ultimately, even though Mark series amps are well capable of heavy sounds, amps from the Mark series lineage tend to get the Boogie badge and reflect that period of Mesa history since it spans the entire companies history. No real rhyme or reason - kind of an evolution but still subject (open) to change. Thanks for watching! :) This video also tells some of the story as well: ua-cam.com/video/LSp4yO_sdQ8/v-deo.html

      Get a Mark III. The combination of the 34’s and 6L6’s is brilliant. Having recently gotten the JP-2C, I have been able to compare the different parts of the lineage. Wow. The 34’s bring out this brilliant sparkle but the power of all 4 6L6’s in the C+ circuit is incredible.

  • @rickfeith6372

    Question: Why do all the pros use straight cabs and everyone else uses slanted? Have a peek on Reverb or your local Craigslist and the slant cabs are 10 times more available. Same with Recto Std 4x12 os vs traditional 4x12 Mesa...finding JP's favorite cab, 4x12 straight traditional is very difficult in the used market. I NEED one of those Boogie stools too.

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  7 років тому +9

      Great question/observation, Rick. Lots of people seem to be enamored of the sort of monitoring effect offered by the top two speakers sloping upward in a slant cab, thus firing the sound more toward ear level. The interesting thing is, when you compare the two (slant & straight) the Straight cabs have a cohesive punch effect that reflects all four speakers being on the same forward throw. Phasing is less of an issue and the straight cabs just seem 'together', cohesive and very forward. Not many people are able to do an A/B between the two so it seems that lots of times, a purchase ends up being a matter of what is in stock and the slant cabs have been more popular overall. Slants do sound great and the differences between the two are not huge, but when people have a chance to compare, they often prefer the clarity and punch of the straight compared to the monitor effect of the slant. Hope this helps and thanks for asking a great question! :D

    • @Swampster70
      @Swampster70 4 роки тому

      I love the III and especially the John Skyes huge Whitesnake tones on 1984. Whodathunk that came from a little 1x12 combo? But many see the III as a bit of a stop gap between a good IIC+ and a IV, so it doesn't, IMHO, get the recognition it deserves. I've only had the chance to play a couple of IIC+ and they had a bit more attack to the sound and the IV's more width - the III was more gainy but didn't have the chunk of the IIC+ or the wide sound of the IV. Maybe the 'inbetween' sound didn't capture the attention - but you'd think that the intro to Still of the Night by Whitesnake would get your attention before you concentrated on Tawny Kitaen.
      As with any piece of musical equipment - and Mesa is one of the few electronic manufacturers that I would class their amps as musical equipment rather than "just an amp" - if you love it, then that's all that matters. Keep it forever and play it as often as you can.

    So good job Mesa and JP, i have the Engl, because i wanted the Mesa sound, it is so good, but not that same nice bally sound like Mark series, boogies are Just boogies, nothing is better.

    3:20 Twist ending. My BIAS FX does that too.
    I'm using mark iic+ amp matched patch though..

    • @Swampster70
      @Swampster70 4 роки тому

      It pretends to do that.
      If you do that through a really IIC+ it has been noted that there are more kids born 9 months later. If you do that through an FX thingy, the sales of tissue increases.
      Take that as you will...

    Such a monster player, and I love his rhythm sounds, but that clean tone...that was already anachronistic by the 90's.

  • @timaging

    see now I bought a Mark Five thinking it would cover everything, but the clean sound has been crap since I got it. I think maybe Im doing something wrong and no matter what it's not clean

      I believe you have a bad tube, or internal problem. My mark v is super clean on the first channel

    • @SujeetGT
      @SujeetGT 4 роки тому

      Check the pickups you use, active pickups for example are quite high in output and will cause the notes to break even on clean channel. Try cutting the mids as well

      You know, people say that, but unless you are an impulse buyer, one that buys and sells music instruments constantly, these amps become part of your sound, and part of your "must have" instruments when playing. I have bought 3 Mesa's over the years. Have them all. Bought my first in like '79 or '80. The MKIIa. That amp GROWLS. So many people have tried to separate it from me, but they give up saying "you marry your stuff". I just can't imagine not owning it. I paid for it in advance, $900 and waited a full 9 months to get it. It was flown to the closest airport to me. You have people that pay big money for an amp, then they pay for tons of pedals, some at over $200 a pop, and still are searching for "that sound". I know in this video, Petrucci has a massive delay on, but otherwise, all that sound is the amp. Myself, for pedals, I only have a tuner into a chorus into a delay, and that's it. On whatever set I have that needs it, I'll insert my wah pedal, but everything I get for sound is the Mesa. I saw Dream Theater last April, and it was fun seeing JP had two heads and two cabs, and watching the channel lights change colors and the EQ (there are 2 in this amp) change numerous times in the song. This is my next Boogie, maybe my last...

      Screwdj_Mcduck What?? Vintage is great used gear BUT their new Triple Crown, TransAtlantic, and Mk V series are killer amps. I love my Mk IV but I would definitely buy one of these if could.

      Thanks for the incredible, kind words, +Loral Johnson. It's likely true of lots of amps out there that people get connected to... but it's certainly the case with Mark series amps - they are a unique voice all their own. Some like them - some don't... but those who do find them often speak of them becoming a part of their musical voice when they play. And this is a huge compliment to us and something we never take lightly during the process of trying to find amplifier gold and inspiration. Thanks for the many years of support and taking the time to share your thoughts and experience. Very much appreciated! Rock on! :)

    • @mesaboogie

      Thanks for the kind words, +Nathan Holmes! We're very proud of the latest amps as well as the amps that came before them, which are the foundations of the company making it what it is today. I think it's fair and safe to say that some of what we're making today offers as much TONE and versatility as anything we've made in the past but tone lies in the ears of the beholder. :D The JP-2C is a LEGIT re-issue of the Mark IIC+ with features to John's tastes/needs. Lots more cool products and great ideas to come. Thanks for the support!
