Philippines has older maps that claimed the Scarborough shoal/Panatag Islands to be own by the Philippines. It dated back 1700's, compare to the historical map of China that were released in 1930s/40s. So, Philippines has more right to claim Panatag Islands, and that's a fact!
As a Filipino, it makes me so sad that China keeps insisting that the entire goshdarn sea is theirs when it belongs partially to Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. We won the battle in Netherlands, our hardworking officials proved that China's claims are both FALSE LEGALLY AND HISTORICALLY.
I hope one day the Chinese government will be stop their greed and let other countries have their peace.

Every country has its own name version of this sea. However, the international name of this sea is still South China Sea and it doesn't imply that China owns this sea, but merely implies the sea's position. Indian Ocean doesn't mean it belongs to India and so do this.

As a Vietnamese, I still remember the time when China's boats first attacked ours, probably in 2014 or 2015. We were utterly shocked and it quite a topic of the year.
It has died down now but I still see some headtitles about Chinese ships and our fishing vessels. It is an unvoiced worry of ours that China has already got Truong Sa.
I heard about the whole business with the Phillipines and am quite worried. China is going lengths to claim our seas.
Yeah it's unfortunate that local fishermen have to suffer/compete with bigger opponents. Hopefully things will improve in the future

The entire area is called and pertained to as “South China Sea” just how Indian Ocean is pertained to but it doesn’t mean that Indinan Ocean is a territory of India. Only PART of the South China Sea is owned or is under the ECZ which is 200NM from the 12NM territorial water of the Philippines to which we pertain to that EEZ or 200NM extension as West Philippine Sea. The same case with Vietnam, only part of the South China Sea is under the EEZ of Vietnam to which pertained to as East Vietnam Sea. The thing here is that China wanted to claim and gain power over the ENTIRE South China Sea which includes both EEZ of Vietnam and Philippines.

I'm not a lawyer, but you don't have to be one to realize that that's one of the reasons why we have laws: To ensure that right makes might and not the other way around.

It's like history repeating itself
1. PCA is not a court. It has no connection to UN, nor it is a court. Both the US and UK had ignored its “ruling” in the past. This time under the guidance of the US, PCA broke its own rule that there must be two parties to start the case. After accepted $3 million from Philippines, and used Philippines appointed judges, Philippines appointed “lawyer” to represent China who did not even attend. What kind of “ruling” did you expect?
2. Why not show Vietnam’s line of claim? If it is not “most of the South China Sea”, I do not know what is “most”. It is more than 10x larger than Vietnam landmass
3. Why not show the actual control of the islands in the area? All six claimants have numerous military bases in the same area. Vietnam controls more than 30. China has only 7. Everyone else all have many military installations on their controlled islands. All of them have operational runway in the area. China is the last one to build it. Taiwan also has a runway of over 2000 meters on the largest island in the area.
4. Why not show Taiwan’s line of claim? Afraid people question why it matches China’s claim? Because it was Taiwan (Republic of China) who drew the 9-dash-line in 1947. No one challenged the claim back then. The US even supported it. All hell broke loss when Republic of China lost the civil war on the mainland to the communists. Now all the sudden multiple recognized Chinese territories are sudden “illegal” territories.
5. All six claimants have built military bases on numerous islands. Here is a map of actual control in Spartly islands

It's OLD NAME = CHAMPA SEA before European came & called it "South China Sea" (China only called it "South Sea"). Frank Rao - US owned Guam through the Treaty of Paris (1898) after defeating Kingdom of Spain. Guam had/has native inhabitants. But those Spratly islands were just empty too small islands (no humans) & never have been colonized until occupied recently.

In 1945, in accordance with the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations and with American help, the armed forces of the Republic of China government at Nanjing accepted the surrender of the Japanese garrisons in Taiwan, including the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Nanjing then declared both archipelagoes to be part of Guangdong Province. In 1946 it established garrisons on both Woody (now Yongxing / 永兴) Island in the Paracels and Taiping Island in the Spratlys. France protested. The French tried but failed to dislodge Chinese nationalist troops from Yongxing Island (the only habitable island in the Paracels), but were able to establish a small camp on Pattle (now Shanhu / 珊瑚) Island in the southwestern part of the archipelago.
In 1950, after the Chinese nationalists were driven from Hainan by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), they withdrew their garrisons in both the Paracels and Spratlys to Taiwan. In 1954 France ceased to be a factor when it accepted the independence of both south and north Vietnam and withdrew from Indochina.
In 1956 North Vietnam formally accepted that the Paracel and Spratly islands were historically Chinese. About the same time, the PLA reestablished a Chinese garrison on Yongxing Island in the Paracels, while the Republic of China (Taipei) put troops back on Taiping Island in the Spratlys. But, that same year, South Vietnam reopened the abandoned French camp on Shanhu Island and announced that it had annexed the Paracel archipelago as well as the Spratlys.
In 1974 South Vietnam attempted to enforce its claims to sovereignty by placing settlers in the Spratlys and expelling Chinese fishermen from the southwestern Paracels. In the ensuing naval battle at Shanhu Island, China defeated Vietnamese forces. This enabled Beijing to extend its control to the entire Paracel archipelago, where it has not been effectively challenged since.
