I've flown a few aircraft in my day, and there are just some flying machines that I would not even consider... even if I was offered an opportunity to earn the rating for free and my instructor was the chief test pilot on that type... I just lack the stones and would be in constant fear of loosing my life. 1) Any ballistic space capsule... (hell-to-the-no) 2) Any rocket propelled fixed wing (Komets, Space shuttle, X-15) 3) Any jet-tipped rotorcraft or vertical landing fixed wing 4) Any aircraft with downward firing crew escape system 5) Any gigantic cold war supersonic bomber that requires drag chutes on landing rollouts, with intakes large enough to stand upright in and delta planforms To those brave souls who have the gigantic brass balls to operate such machines, I salute you and bow my head in due respect.
This jet ticks 2 of the boxes, needs drag chutes to even get the front wheels on the ground, and the ejection seats fire you straight into the concrete if you are too low for a safe escape.
You don't fly a capsule, you take a ride in it. And how is a plane with a downward firing ejection seat worse than a plane with no ejection seat at all? At least it gives you a chance to eject in since situations, whereas a pilot in a 737 that fails in takeoff is just as screwed as anyone in a plane with downward firing seats.
The Hustler flew 3 years before this machine. The Soviets typically built their 'copied' versions of US aircraft types bigger for the assumed bragging rights. They did it on every design they copied.

Cold Beer ok. But compare the mig-15 and F-86. MiG-15 has a middle mounted wing, F-86 has low mounted wing. The same is with the MiG-21. Middle mounted delta wing. If you want to say that it was copied from F-106, then no. F-106 doesn’t have the nose cone with nose air intake. It has a little different delta wing. And also, mig-21 flew in February 1955, while F-106 flew in December 1956. Or you wanna says that everything the Soviet’s has was copied?
Looks like a giant, steroid-infused MiG-21 with a bunch of engines stuck on the wings! Beautiful lines though, with such a long fuselage and short delta wings not unlike the MiG-21.

I cannot imagine flying this beast. Sitting 30 feet in the air for takeoff and landing, cannot see down the runway over jacked up nose! Bicycle landing gear means wipeout if one tip engine fails on takeoff. Really had to have a lot of faith in the machine.

Sputnik was launched just 3 weeks before this aircraft's first flight. Althought with a smaller payload, the booster technology was formidable. M-50 operations were foreseen as excessively demanding and unsustainable. British and American bomber development reached the same conclusion and only continued with subsonic bombers. All countries credited each other's ability for development and production capability, but realized that economic systems too, had their limits. Very impressive prototypes were flying and projecting power, but rocket boosters ruled.

The front landing gear bogie seems to be a bit of overkill. Think I’d rather go back to a two-wheel arrangement there - and beef up the rear bogie even more. It seems to be the one taking all the bumps!
The landing gear trolley of this aircraft plays an important role when taking on a afteressage. Consider the gobarites and weight of this model, this idea is not new.

@@winternow2242 We got your point, but you can't prove partially secret figures from old tech.demonstrators/prototypes. e.g. prove range, payload,accurancy from Minuteman/Sarmat/Polaris/R7Rif.
There was problems with the engines. In the project, the constructors supposed to install 4 M-16-17 engines, that engine was constructing as the most powerful turbojet engine in the world. But it was not ready, because of some difficulties and plane got VD-7 turbojet engines. But these engines were too weak. So the plane, that was designed as supersonic, couldn't even reach the speed of a sound. The project was closed a couple of years later, because of disparity to the supposed characteristics.

Insane machine, in some respects similar to the Convair B-58 Hustler but on a massive scale, respect to the Soviets.
