This video is a great resource for reviewing the assembly sequence. It's easy to forget the details after not doing a rear drum job for several years.
- Replacing rear brake drums are a pain in the ... rear. There are several parts to keep track of, clean, and lube.
- There are major parts and springs that must be put in a certain way. You must remember the proper sequence when reinstalling the parts.
- Notice: the adjuster wheel mechanism on the left rear is installed and is turned in a different direction than the one on the right rear.
- And finally, the long spring is a pain to stretch and fit into the proper hole on the first attempt.
- Double check your work!
Excellent clear video with attention to detail.
Well done.
Use anti seize on the drum to backplate if possible also.
Thanks so much for this! I am going to be changing the brake drums on my first car, Pontiac g3 2010, and this will be very helpful🤩🤩Thanks for helping this first time DIY millennial fix his car.
Awesome video ❤I have learnt,I enjoy your videos.Am from Zambia 🇿🇲🇿🇲
Very good tutorial. It is the only tutorial so far I know that includes how to inspect the drum. Thank you!
There should be an extra like feature in YT. You deserve one with this vid. Thanks man.
Excellent video. Most people say take a sledgehammer and knock it off. You are one of a few that talks about the adjuster! I'm on my way out to do this job on a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus! Thank you.
THIS VIDEO IS VERY VERY GREAT AND VERY EASY TO REPLACE DRUM BRAKE SHOES. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I LIKE YOUR WAY OF DOING JOB, ONCE AGAIN TRHANK YOU.
nice video. I like your series of vids.
Some things I like to do:
1. Work one side at a time, the other side is a good reference which you've mentioned
2. Whenever I remove a spring, I find the matching pair from the brake kit right away and keep them together so I make sure I install the correct one. The driver vs. passenger side springs may have subtle differences.
3. when installing springs, I wear heavy gloves. if you lose grip, you may lose a chunk of meat from your finger if a spring hook catches your hand
I Ison All good tip, thanks for watching.
Great suggestion on the bottom spring. Very helpful also about leaving emergency brake cable on instead of removing it.
great clip.... many thanks. particularly useful is the tip to engage the lower spring first before assembling, i know i discovered this once myself in the past whilst struggling for ages on another vehicle with rear shoes...
Thanks, well explained with correct naming os parts and explaining of processes.
That was really clear and helpful thanks. I have a 1966 Morris Minor here in the UK, its been standing for 3 years and I think all the wheels could be seized, hopefully now I will know what to do! Thanks again, Mike.
+Mike Shipman Hope you can get them loose, thanks for your comment and gl. cheers
Is the Morris the one you can start it with a manual crank.?
I found locking needle nose vise grips work great with brake shoe springs. As always a great detailed video. Spot on saving money resurfacing brake drums.
Jimmy Mac Good idea, thanks for watching.

Excellent camera work as well. Like for the brake shoe retainer. Very useful.

Smart man greetings for you from Iraq

Very nice , and proper way for break job and very good tips for rear break .......thanks
the drum won't come off if the parking brake is on. also the drum can be severely damaged using the bolt hole removal method, so if you are re-using the drum, pound on it with a rubber mallet from all around.
Great stuff, now to get into my 63 corvette.
Good stuff, cheers!
Simple but clear, good!
Hey RnW is this car the 1995 Toyota Camry le? I need to do this job on my 1995 Toyota Camry le thanks.

what model and year is this car....?
thanks for the video. very helpful...
WHAT kind of kits are out there for a 1948 chevy truck i know theres plenty but i just want the basic out there and reliable
Here's what parts stores often do: set diameter to the number stamped into the drum, so you are getting your last/final resurfacing - they want to sell more parts. Never mind that they should make a minimal cut to verify concentricity and if that's good just stop there. Shops that operate like this will also forget to chamfer the edge [a quick/small 45 cut is ok] so you don't score shoes going on or slice your fingers open.
Gracias. Bendiciones Amigo
We miss you
Thanks brother
Apply for a toyota echo 2003 and 2000?
Was this a Camry ?
I have a question.
My car had really bad brake drums and brake shoes. I decided to replace the springs and the drums and brake shoes. When I got on the freeway my car started shaking. I took it back to the mecanic. He told me to replace the front rotor cs they were bad. I replace everything rotors and brake pads. I got on the road and the shaking is still there. Once again my mecanich replace everything again rear drums front rotor. The shaking is still there when i step on the brakes at highspeed. Now my mecanic is saying that my wheel hubs are bad !!! Im confused becuase the shaking wasnt there before eventhough the drums were really bad the shaking wasnt there. If u have an oppinion about this problem let me know pls
wheel alignment
thank you
Sometimes I have trouble trying to get the starwheel adjuster on.
I have a 2007 cobalt and I changed the back brakes but there is still a rubbing grind noise when I drive. what could this mean
did it go away?
Do newer cars still come with drum brakes?
+1000uf yes they do but the brake drum is usually thinner and not as fat (thick) shown in the video the brake drum in this video looked like more of a SUV or truck on cars the brake drum is much thinner
Great stuff drum breaks should've never been made
nice vids bro

Thanks , but too fast , please slow down the steps .
I hate changing brake shoes; HATE IT!
I started....it'll cost me $80 for a mechanic to come to my home to fix what I messed up!!!!!
A man (Dyi'er) must know his limitations. Just now. Very frustrated with this job....non- job.
I had issues with this too on exactly the same car here and the problem was that for the drum brakes, you are better off buying them from the dealer, the aftermarket specially the ones from orreylis are not made to the same specs as the OEM, all you have to do is compare them side to side and you can see the problem anyways I removed the orreylis junk and put the OEM ones and they worked perfectly. Notice on this video how the brake pads on the new orreylis brakes one is thicker than the other on the OEM both are the same, for the front brakes the aftermarket are fine but I would trust auto zone over orreylis. Also with the OEM installation is easier because everything works perfectly, the way I look at it rear brakes last a long time so spending 93 dollars at the dealership is not a bad deal.

Thanks for your response. I never want to work on brakes. As mentioned, I'm a dyi'er and have limited knowledge.
