@patrickhall6831 Holy sh!t!😱 219K on original drum brakes?!?! A testament to how much longer drum brake shoes can last compared to disc brakes. I kinda wish brand new cheaper end cars still came equipped with power drum brakes all around because that set up would be perfect for today's Starbucks ladies that are hard on their brakes at every stop. That's why I say drum brakes are better and last longer per pair of shoes and are perfect for average Starbucks consumers. LOL
Thanks man! And thanks for checking out the video! It is good to get feedback from people who know what they are doing (as well as people who dont). There will be more to come!
9 years later this is still coming in handy. My gfs car has drums and my new dd has them too. I ve done the drums shoes and springs before but never the cylinder. This takes out the guess work. Thanks again
Thanks for the comment and tips. As for the paper towels instead of the plastic bag; I prefer the plastic bag because the towel can become saturated and get onto your metal/paint.
Hey again chris . Just a quick note to pass along to everyone based on what happened to me today when I was changing out the brake cylinders on my son's 93 accord. The compression fitting was rusted to the brake line like you mentioned could happen so I took the cylinder off with a small section of brake line attached. The fitting and the brake line were completely rusted together and I couldn't break them apart.I took a "bernzomatic" torch I got a few years ago at home depot and heated the fitting and after about 10 seconds I was able to break the compression fitting free from the break line. Had to do the same on both sides and it worked like magic both times. Thanks again chris . hope this helps someone.
Flare nut wrench, bro! They are crazy expensive but rounding one of those nuts on the brake line is "Game Over". I watch your videos even before I do maintenance work I've done 10 times before- your tips and tricks make me do it better every time. Cheers again, Chris!
+John Daly Your right flare nut or line wrenches are the way to go . home depot used to have them I think they were $30 ??? I would rather pay 30 bucks than have 300 dollars of aggravation
+John Daly I paid $9 for the set at harbor freight. At 7/16, he can probably get by without it, but it's still risky. The first time you round off one of those, you'll be hating life. Don't ask me how I know.
You should change and bleed each side once at a time. This will prevent excess air from getting into you lines and also if you need to reference where something goes, you can look at the other side.
You are an excellent teacher! I don't know jack, but you really speak slowly, and thoroughly give details (wrench sizes, front & back views, etc.) Thanks!
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your work. 2 months ago I started getting interested in car mechanics and I couldn't have a better instructor. Are you planning to do some ''theory for beginners'' videos too in the future? For example a video explaining how the coolant system works or the brake system. You cover it sometimes in your videos but doing one video of ''basics'' for each section would be awesome. I'm saying this because - for instance - as a beginner I had to watch a lot of your videos (and other videos) to fully understand what you're doing in this video and not just apply it. Thanks again and after spending several hours watching cars' ''how to'' videos on youtube I can tell that you're the best. Keep it up!!
I've been waiting weeks for someone to change the brake cylinder for my Pt Cruiser, after 2 months I come across this video and feel like you've explained it well enough for me to try it myself. Thanks for making such an excellent step by step video!!
Diana Lopez-Rodriguez Awesome! I am glad the video was helpful Diana! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Get some penetrating fluid on that bolt that connects the brake line to the wheel cylinder so it comes off easily.
Hey love your videos. can u do a videos how to change brake master cylinder & do u have to bleed the brake when doing this. Thank you love your love videos keep up the good work.
Love the bloopers at the end of the video. That shows that making these videos is a little harder than people think and how hard Chris works for a great final product. You deserve all your fame and fortune my friend.
That moment you watch a Chris Fix video gaining so much knowledge and you know just what to do and then cant use any of it cause you end up spending a decade trying to pry your rusted drum off
I’ve been watching Chris Fix vids for several years and this is the first time I have seen bloopers at the end. LMAO it was great. Compliments on the clear step-by-step explanation with tips and tricks along the way. Like how the progression of vids where you get more and more lively, enthusiastic, and entertaining over the years! You have saved me a fortune on car repairs already! Grazie
Awesome videos. So simple to follow and love the tips that are not included in books. I've changed my rear and front brakes with no issues. My car is pretty rusted so all those tips helped out. Thank you so much Chris, you've saved me a lot of money! I don't know if you realize how great of a public service your videos are but they definitely are! Keep up the great work!
Hi there Chris, Yesterday I changed the wheel cylinders on my wife's Hyundai Atos after watching other guys videos. I'm sorry that I didn't see this one of yours. The procedure was pretty much the same as yours, but your video is much better with much clearer steps. Thank you so much for all the help that you have shared with us. I've watched quite a few of your videos and also changed out my front rotors and brake pads on my Nissan Tiida last year. Keep up the videos, they are a great help. Kind regards to you.
If I'm worried about cross threading, I turn the nut backwards with my fingers, until I can feel it seat. Then tighten with fingers, and don't put a wrench on it until your certain the nut is on.
I am a seasonal Mechanic. I wwas looking for something else but took the time to watch your talentes. I loved the entire how to video, because there are people who watch and don't realize you said CUT do it again .
10 videos later and once again I should have just checked your videos first. Thank you so much for this. All the little tips and details as well, not just the overall replacement.
Clearly you know what you are doing mechanically. Your videos are better than any training videos I have watched to learn my trade in working on fast jet aircraft. These are good enough to market. Thank you
did a full rear brake overhaul today, all the parts came to £150 and learnt how to do it from these videos. everything was going fine until i got to taking off the cylinder... managed to brake 3 tourque keys trying to remove the retaining bolt, ended up having to remove the shock absorber to drill the bolt head, we then had to cannibalise bolts from a bicycle to fit the new ones. after that all happened, the nut around the brake line got wrecked and had to file it back down to 10mm this was meant to be the simple bit bit took hours =[ cheers for the videos!
Yesterday both my back wheel cylinders on my ranger i only had front breaks it was raining and caused a little accident, but now after limping home i go strait to your channel and as always, you have what i need :)
I've watched several youtube videos on auto maintenance and repairs, and yours are the best by far, you are an excellent instructor. Thanks for making them.
+Tommy Rad Brake bloopers lol. I give Chris credit, I would be a lot worse. I can explain things well if there is no camera around me but as soon as I know I am being filmed, my lips turn into rubber fish and can't say anything right.
SnS PC LOL, I know exactly what you mean. I studied Jazz comp/improv for years, in the privacy of my bedroom, playing with my dad on sax. I was asked to do a gig and was excited about it. I got on stage and completely forgot everything! EVERYTHING. To the point where, if someone asked me what was hanging on my neck [guitar] I would have looked at them as if they were speaking Martian slang. I laugh now but it was pretty traumatic at the time. Total choke! LOL
I watched your video on how to changed drum brakes and was able to change mine! I made a mistake by not replacing the cylinders though, and now they are leaking. So I'm gonna use this video tomorrow to change those. Thank you! Your tutorials make everything so easy.
Ryan Lynch Thanks Ryan. Glad the video was helpful! Definitely consider subscribing! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
Thank you for this video. My car did the exact same thing that your truck did. When I pressed the brake pedal it started squirting and I tightened it. My brakes feel much better now. Cheers!
Nice video explanation, easy to listen too and to follow. One thing you might want to consider telling folks (or folks can read here)... it's best to use a line wrench on those brake line nuts, as the are super soft and can easily round over. For folks who don't know, a line wrench is 'almost' a box wrench, with a small opening where it can fit over the line, and it grips the nut on 4 sides, instead of just two. Definitely a DAMHIK issue!
Ive got to say ive watched ALOTof videos on car repair and he has the BEST ive seen so far, the videos are clear and precise... really cater to the do it your selfer like myself.... he has the camera close enough to what he is doing so u really understand the process... PROPS TO HIM..... all the other videos ive watched are so far away that u cant really understand what they are doing.... THANK U SO MUCH, anything else i have to do regusrding my cars i will be watching him for tips.....i subscribed to his videos, ive never bothered to subscribe to anyone before, let alone comment on anything....so that is saying something for this guy.....Im looking forward to watching future videos, i just bought a 1995 chevy lumina as a 2nd car and im in the process of trying to get it road worthy, this video helped me immensely...thank u
Haha thanks a lot! Glad it was helpful! I guess I wont have to use my toaster to film in the future videos lol. If you havent, give the video a thumbs up, it helps me out! Thanks!
Hey chris just a quick note to say thanks for all the work and, "oh my GOD", all the editing you must do to produce your how-to vids. I'm waaaay older than you but I watched the drum brake vids cause I have to go out in the garage to do my wife's rear drums now and the refresher was cool. Great job again and its fun to laugh while watching your vids. Take care Jeff
***** Thanks a lot Jeff. Yea it is a lot of work, but comments like this make it all worth it! I am glad the video was a good refresher and you enjoyed watching!
I know you would have used a line wrench these days... lol But you been here since the beginning giving up the good info. Changing the world 1 video at a time. Thats what the internet was made for.
NEVER USE A REGULAR WRENCH OR OPEN END METRIC/SAE WRENCH ON THE BRAKE LINE BOLT CAUSE THE BRAKE LINE BOLT WILL ROUND ON U VERY EASILY. THEN YOU'RE IN A WORLD OF HURT. USE A LINE WRENCH....THATS WHAT THEYRE CALLED.....THEYRE MEANT TO FIT AROUND A LINE BOLTS LIKE THE BRAKE LINE BOLT SO THAT U DONT ROUND IT OUT BY STRIPPING IT
I have to say that was one of the best how to videos on auto repair I have ever seen, the camera shots were spot on and we'll lit. Just subscribed thanks.
I just got to say even though most of your vehicles you're working is a ford. All my ate chevys but you go through so much detail I learn more from you then people with the same vehicle as mine.. thank you so much for taking the time to fully explain and show everything
Thank you so much for your help. I rebuilt my brakes on my 91 gmc suburban R2500 and it was so helpful my problem was there was so much rust built up on it it took me a week to break it loose and no power tools snapped a lug bolt in the process but achievement unlocked lol really loved your video and loved how straightforward it was 😄😁
Clear and well-explained (except for the suddens disappearance of the brake hardware, which you later explained). Just a couple of hints: 1. Ideally, you should use a tubing wrench on the brake line. Yeah, I know most people don't have one, but you can get a full set at Harbor Freight for not much money, and it will keep you from rounding off the nut. 2. Instead of a plastic bag, put down some folded-over paper towels to catch the brake fluid. And keep it off any paint.
Nitrle gloves to keep brake fluid off your hands. Brake fluid will remove paint so not so good for your skin. Use a funnel to fill master cyl also. Don't start a circus act trying to pour brake fluid into master cyl w/o funnel. Eventually, it will make you sorry when it's too late.
my car has 415, 000 miles on it. I have been doing all the work to save moolah cause well, less is more at this point. Chris has enabled me to continue saving money and rocking more miles. I fucking love you man. I also appreciate how clean he is, cause if I'm going to be digging around the mechanics of my car, I may as well keep it clean. well done. you've done this world a great service!
Thanks for all your videos. We can count on good lighting, detailed instructions, and a variety of subject matter! Good to see your human by showing us a few outtakes!
Thanks to you tube and guys like you Chris, I saved money and a lot of aggravation with waiting on a mechanic! And thank you so much for showing us how to bleed our new wheel cylinder! I hit a problem with my master cylinder going dry. I have 2 compartments to mine. One is for the front and the other is for the rear. Well I assumed the bigger rear cylinder was for the rear wheels so that is what I monitored. ! Wrong! lol The front one which holds very little fluid actually controls my rear wheels! So your tips on bleeding was a God sent! Because at first, I had no brakes and the light was on my panel. But now, it's all good thanks to your video! :) Here is a tip. If your master cylinder has two areas, better watch both of them to start going down on fluid level!
These videos are saving my life lol I just recently got a 1985 Lincoln town car and I know nothing about cars and these videos are helping me work on it myself
I just find out I need a new cylinder in my rear brakes and I was wondering how difficult it would be. Thanks to your video now I know how to do the job. Great video and point of view. Cheers
I have to say that doing research and trying to decode a Haynes Manuel all night can be particularly stressful. especially the contemplation of self ability and the unfortunate possibility of having to take your only transportation into a shop.... So that ending has just made my night. It's incredible that it was something so simple, and so random that was able to make me smile and laugh after being worried and frustrated. Old vid, prob won't see this, but if you ever do, thanks for that.
Haha the bloopers were really funny. You always make and explain everything seem so easy. Good to see you're actually human. Thanks for teaching me to renovate my brakes 😂
I just finished watching how to clean mass air flow and EGR valve on a 98 mazda protege and i have to say for a woman..I think I can fix alot on my crazy car. This guy is awesome!!
Your welcome man you're totally welcome I've been in the automotive business for about 24 years and the only way I learn how to do anything in this day and age is to get onto UA-cam thank goodness for people like you amen brother
Great job on the video. Your videos are getting a very professional tone. I've changed many brakes over the years, so I didn't see anything new. But because I found your video entertaining, I watched the whole thing. You're on a roll. Keep it going!!! I look forward to your next.
Let it be known that this was the first video Chris started off with "hey guys" 7 years of great quality content, you are an inspiration
Thanks a lot!
That is historical. Great video.
So cute
How long did you spend figuring that out?
Chris fix, made this 7 years ago and it's still helping people like me everyday! Thanks for all your work Chris! Hope you're well!
Absolutely once it gets warmer I plan on replacing the drum brakes and wheel cylinders on my 2004 Ford Taurus 219,000 miles on them puppies !!!!!!

+hnkfsh81 Awesome! Glad the videos were helpful and you saved some money!
+ChrisFix love your method for bleeding brakes. hope that white shirt wasn't one of your favorites lol
reply
how much do they charge? Thanks
@@VinayakGovande if u don't mind me answering they were going to charge me $230.00 to change both rear cylinders on my vehicle.
the "Hey guys!" has gotten so happier and brighter over the years since the first one here. its absolutely awesome to see how far youve came
Great example how a DIY vid should be done! Well-edited, clearly explained each step, nothing rushed, well-shot. Thank you!
Jonathan Sherman Thanks a lot Jonathan. I try to make all of my videos like this!
Thanks for the comment and tips. As for the paper towels instead of the plastic bag; I prefer the plastic bag because the towel can become saturated and get onto your metal/paint.
Its been 40 years or so that I changed out a wheel cylinder. Thanks for the refresher Chris. Great Videos.
Thanks for the feedback! Makes making these videos worth it!
I'm working on my first car I got a month ago. Needed this video and some others. 8 years old and still very helpful thank you.
Hahah thanks a lot. It was funny how many mess-ups I saw while I was editing so I had to add them for some fun lol! Glad you liked the video!
This is your first "hey guys" intro
Can you please show a video on how to replace a brake master cylinder please chris
Thanks for the comment! I am glad I am able to teach so many people!!!! :)
***** Thanks for sharing Jeff! I am sure this will help a lot of people!
I did this years ago , and probably the next 2 days, your direction refreshes my approach, thank You
Glad the video was helpful!
I appreciate learning this from you about it. I am a 55 yrs old deaf man who has the desire know how it work and how to do it properly. Thanks !
Flare nut wrench, bro! They are crazy expensive but rounding one of those nuts on the brake line is "Game Over". I watch your videos even before I do maintenance work I've done 10 times before- your tips and tricks make me do it better every time. Cheers again, Chris!
John Daly
I wouldn't call $6 "crazy expensive".
That's how much singles cost at my local auto parts stores.
When you have to buy a whole set of them- yes, they are expensive. Crazy expensive, even.
+John Daly Your right flare nut or line wrenches are the way to go . home depot used to have them I think they were $30 ??? I would rather pay 30 bucks than have 300 dollars of aggravation
+John Daly It's like $9 for the set at harbor freight.

USE A LINE WRENCH....THATS WHAT THEYRE CALLED.....THEYRE MEANT TO FIT AROUND A LINE BOLTS LIKE THE BRAKE LINE BOLT SO THAT U DONT ROUND IT OUT BY STRIPPING IT
Kiddro22 Thanks for the tip!
Flare nut not a bolt
I have to say that was one of the best how to videos on auto repair I have ever seen, the camera shots were spot on and we'll lit.
Just subscribed thanks.
Thanks a lot man! I try to make all my videos like this!
"Brake renovation"??? That was too funny.
eres tu primo
I absolutely love the whole outro bloopers so you can breed the Blake's and a brake renovation. 😆 😂 Great video Chris.👍💯
If you prop brake pedal down just an inch or two you will not get much brake fluid gravity feeding down to your open line.
bottmar1 That is a good tip! Thanks!
Loved the bloopers at the end. Thanks for doing all of the hard work of recording and editing so that you can help us know what to do. THANK YOU!
BLOOPERS WERE AWESOME TOO!!!!!
Mindy Hull haha, glad you liked them too!
I just got to say even though most of your vehicles you're working is a ford. All my ate chevys but you go through so much detail I learn more from you then people with the same vehicle as mine.. thank you so much for taking the time to fully explain and show everything
lmao the bloopers was halarious
Thank you so much for your help. I rebuilt my brakes on my 91 gmc suburban R2500 and it was so helpful my problem was there was so much rust built up on it it took me a week to break it loose and no power tools snapped a lug bolt in the process but achievement unlocked lol really loved your video and loved how straightforward it was 😄😁
lol like the bloopers!! lol
+allen Henry lol thanks!
Clear and well-explained (except for the suddens disappearance of the brake hardware, which you later explained). Just a couple of hints:
I think you should use gloves...
I really like all your video manuals, thanks from Russia, Yakutsk!
I am glad the videos are helpful!
You can see how you have gotten better and better in your videos from your early ones to now.
Look at that driveway real estate! I wish I had a driveway that size. Keep up the great work man. My car has drum brakes too.
I've watched a lot of how-to videos one various subjects. This has got to be one, if not THE best I've ever seen. Thank you very much.
well now I wish all your videos had bloopers. excellent job Chris thanks.
+Manuel Trujillo Haha, I will be doing a blooper video dont worry!
I just find out I need a new cylinder in my rear brakes and I was wondering how difficult it would be. Thanks to your video now I know how to do the job. Great video and point of view. Cheers
Carlos Puig Perfect! That is exactly why I make these videos! Glad the video was helpful!
A calm and gloveless Chris Fix before his ultimate evolution
This video will come in very handy this Saturday. Have to change my cyclinder out on my 2005 Scion XB. THANK YOU very much
I have to say that doing research and trying to decode a Haynes Manuel all night can be particularly stressful.
especially the contemplation of self ability and the unfortunate possibility of having to take your only transportation into a shop....
Jackie Pizzini Thanks Jackie! I am glad my videos have been helpful!
Your welcome man you're totally welcome I've been in the automotive business for about 24 years and the only way I learn how to do anything in this day and age is to get onto UA-cam thank goodness for people like you amen brother
Great job. After watching your video, I plan to replace my own leaking wheel cylinder. Thank you so much.
Thanks a lot! Let me know how it goes!
Great video, editing, and camera view. One of the better I've seen on UA-cam.
Robb Criminger Thanks a lot Robb! I am glad the video was helpful! New automotive "how to" videos every Thursday and most Mondays!
Great job on the video.
Your videos are getting a very professional tone. I've changed many brakes over the years, so I didn't see anything new. But because I found your video entertaining, I watched the whole thing. You're on a roll. Keep it going!!! I look forward to your next.
Your video helped me out quite a bit man. I just got done gutting and rebuilding rear drums.
