Hi Leon, thanks for the content here, please let players know that you can use the GK 3 pick up in reverse mode on the SY1000. I have the GK 3 on my ES335 and on my Ibanez archtop, but the cable that joins to the pick up is threaded UNDER the TOP E string. This way is much better as then it does not get in the way of your pick/plectrum hand, you can place your hand where you like. On the SY1000 the GK pickup must be set to reverse. @@LeonTodd Hello Leon, yeah it makes a MASSIVE difference and it is not in the GK 3 instructions, but somewhere in the 100 page SY 1000 manual it shows the pick up reversed, mounted the other way. Also Roland UK confirmed this is no problem, if you are on Twitter I can send you a photo, cheers.😊

WOW! I did not know that at all! This was one of the turn offs for me about the gk3. The collective price tag with whatever pedal you are running was the other one. $$$. 🤑

I have a Variax and really like the modelling it has but this system is another level!, it's nice that the Variax just plugs in and doesn't need a board... this thing could replace a lot of kit including some of my Synths.
Thanks for the demo Leon, this will work well with my AFX3 and my synth rack if they have note data to midi out! Sounds like they got the tracking a lot better.

John Buscarino built Steve Morse’s nylon string with the hex pickups panned left and right, used on MODOC.
Bridge position is called position 1, and position 4 would be center + neck, as referenced by Ibanez pickup charts.

You must try and get one Brandon, I have one and I have had my ES335 and Ibanez archtop fitted with GK 3'S. It is utterly mind blowing, got so many sounds, patches and modelled Guitars to create, I have not even touched the step sequencer yet....of which you can use 6 at once. It will take me the rest of the year to find what I would like to hear....

I'm absolutely in love with the Axe FX III and that paired with the SY-1000 is pure magic. I can only imagine what could be done if I added a Variax guitar to that mix.. I'd be in heaven and would never want to leave lol
@@brandonproctor3639 Yeah, if you are using a DAW, MIDI, the options get crazy! I just want to create as many user patches as possible so I can just use the SY to practice, improvise and compose. It is still strange for me to play my 335, but hear a Strat, Tele or lush 12 string acoustic...
Really? I kinda feel the opposite way. The synth stuff in the sy1000 is pretty mediocre. The amp modeling on the gt1000 sounds way better to my ear. To each their own I suppose.

Hi Leon. Love all the videos you have done on this unit. I bought one on the basis of these videos and have found it to be really versatile to say the least. Any way you can give some tips re setting the levels for the gk3 on the unit.

It never occurred to me rockers were born in barns -- but teles, strats, PRS's and LP's are pretty much the only instruments they have ever heard of. Here we find out there is also such a thing as an es335 and an "acoustic" guitar, a Gibson J45, bango and sitar. The sitar sounded a bit 1972 John Mclaughlin on a double neck SG style guitar which was cool. The J45 was impressive. I wonder if the sy1000 can model orchastra instruments also without a hastle also.
Hi Leon, great demo. I was thinking of a Line 6 Variax guitar for different guitar sounds and tunings but after seeing this demo of yours, the SY 1000 seems a better choice since my main guitar is an Ibanez RG Prestige and I'd rather use that with the SY 1000. I used to have a GR-55 but sold it years back unfortunately though I do have the GK3 pickup with me. Just wanted to know if the SY 1000 can be routed through a Line 6 Helix Rack or Floor unit (my main units) and how to do that in the best way. Thanks.

BTW: from the editor, at the Instrument block, you can access "Variations" (at the right side of the "Common" tab). Variations are libraries, some of them very interesting. Have you tried them?

I used a GP-10 for instrument modeling before getting my SY-1000. Much more convenient having it all in the SY-1000. For my non GK guitars, I recently upgraded to the GT-1000, and I'm using my SY-300 with it, works great...but the SY-1000 is still my main rig.
Boss needs to come up with a more compact GK pickup design that works with more non-standard guitars. IMO
When you play around with the alternate tunings, do you feel any discernible latency ?

I've got a strat with a built in GK pickup plus supervee bladerunner trem, fender roasted maple neck and tusc nut. It plays great and works well without having to mount a GK3 onto my favorite axe although I do have a guitar with a GK3 on it. I've found there are subtle differences in the tone between the earlier GK2A pickup and the GK3.
I’m not sure what makes me want to purchase this Roland pickup, the quality of the technology or the level of the player. No doubt skills make sound anything good

This SY-1000 is super cool! I’m dying to buying such a rig. But when I look to those menus, dialing, dialing… Not my thing! I didn’t even like the three knobs in my strat, changed to two. Eddie had just one! More than enough to him…
Hey. Just discovered (and subscribed to) your channel, and I'm working my way thru all the SY-1000 material (which I only just ordered). You do a great job in explaining things clearly, and I enjoy your enthusiasm. Oh, yeah... great playing, too!
Anyway, nice review and demo here... overall. But I kept wondering the entire time about the reasoning behind such a sizable inclusion of the Axe-Fx. IMO, I think you missed a great opportunity here to demonstrate the *SY-1000's* own amps (clean and dirty) and its effects capabilities in relation to the great sounds you were definitely getting from the SY-1000. Again, IMHO and YMMV. of course.

I have had my SY 1000 for some time now and I think it is a very pro piece of gear. I was wondering how you really thought about it in this respect. I feel like there are so much stuff that you haven’t covered and it is a guitar Swiss Army knife.
If you want to play synth guitar it's the only truly viable option for pro level stuff IMO. There's so much stuff that I find it daunting, and this is coming from a guy with just about every hardware modeller out there. The physical UI is behind the times and the software editor is a bit quirky but otherwise it's a monster unit.
@Leon Todd As an instrument modeler , how does it compare to the line 6 Variax or the roland GR-55 or when Both are used at the same time ?
Leon. the only thing about the SY1000 I do not like is the lack of presets that come with it that are just for guitar..... not to many options to download from tone central as well.
I have the GR33 with GK2A sitting in a box because the tracking was horrendous. Is the tracking on SY1000 and GK3 better?
Waaaay better
And some of the synth sounds don't use the type of tracking the old GR system you're talking about use. So yeah, worlds better. Pitching guitar out of its usual range and massively effecting it can producing evocative "synth" sounds in addition to the guitar modeling and the actual synth stuff onboard.
Hi is that software follow with the SY 1000 or?
could you tell, please, does it read envelopes/attack strength? for example, if you choose a synth, could you change its sound aspects with how hard you pick a string? I'm interested in passing midi further to control some hardware synth's knob with the envelope. like low-pass filter or something.

This SY1000 plug in with the 1/4" cable will sound everything?..Why do you need the GK3?
You can only use the dynamic synth inside sy-1000 with 1/4th input... the rest of the synths and modelling needs GK pickup.
Would it work the same with the older GK-2A pickup?
Yes. It has 5 or 6 hexaphonic configuration in the box. As well as Bass GK set ups

i had this on loan for a few months and it was mega fun.
So it effectively allows you to turn your guitar into a Variax provided you use the Roland pickup?
I'm not super familiar with Variax, but this can let you do your own custom tunings, individual string panning, can combine 3 different sounds and can set them to specific strings... so a bass on your low E string, and the rest in an open tuning, or whatever you want. Does way more than just sound like different guitars.
The variax tech is inferior to the gk3. Just ask the metal guys about palm muting (actually called damping) with a variax.

Im not into the synth thing with the guitar but I am into the guitar modelling. Hopefully they use this technology to replace the Boss GP 10. I had the Boss GP10 and it sounded nothing like this. I got rid of it because it was not realistic sounding. This though sounds fantastic.
They did - the GP-10 has been discontinued. The GK products in production are the SY-1000 and the GR-55 (which is basically a sample playback synth unit).
Just ordered this. This will go nice with my hybrid rack. Axe 3, 2 Syn 2s, Eclipse and now SY1000.

They are really _very_ different units, most essentially in their synth sounds (analog synth -vs- sample playback of the GR-55), plus there's the added benefits on the SY-1000 like the modeled guitars (a la VG-88), plus really so much more, IMO.
BTW, I now own both units, and I'm not planning on the SY ever 'replacing' the GR at all.
I'd recommend searching YT for videos explaining the differences in detail. Hope this helps.

The BIG major flaw the Boss SY1000 has is when changing presets. There is a gap of silence between presets that to me is very annoying. Even with standard guitar sounds with no gk. Sounds great but I'm having doubts about keeping it.
Since there's only a few processors allowing seamless program change, like the Digitech 2101 (only with built in additional PPC 210) or the never Eventide H90, there's a gap in nearly every unit on the planet - wich is annoying - but that's how it is. AxeFx or Helix behave the same. But: AxeFx and Helix allow having scenes, and so does - with a little trick - the SY! If you want your SY to have scenes, you can do that with the help of a VC-Mini (to be found here on UA-cam) 😊

I don’t get the acoustic models. Why model a terrible acoustic-electric sound? Has roland not figured out mic modeling? The electric models seem pretty good but he’s bathing everything in OD and reverb. So it’s as much about the Axe 3 reverb as the SY.
Yea, a separate stand alone sy1000 vid would be nice; along w/all the piano, horn, & other string presets.
@@skweekykleane9810 Sorry, but there _are_ no pianos or horns in the SY-1000 unless you're looking for analog synth sounds that might possibly approach those tones in 'function'. If you want the sounds of _actual_ pianos or horns, etc, you'll want to be looking at the GR-55, which is essentially a sample playback 'synth', whereas the SY-1000 is an analog synth (no samples).
Alternate tuning cool, but i wouldn't buy a guitar synth to sound like guitars much. I'ld be more interested in other instruments and sounds.

Guitar modeling is not in the same ball park as samples. You can midi out of the sy-1000 to a real sampler like Kontakt that that is unreal. With the round robins and other nuances, it is dead on. Native Instrument is good and also Korg Kronos or other top of the line keyboard and you can layer the SY-1000 and up to 16 channels of keyboard that blows everything else away. You have to use your Pro Tools and Kontakt or a top of the line Keyboard Workstation. I have about 3000 dollars in samples and they can not be beat.
If you're just going to use samples, get the Fishman Triple Play. It is the best pitch-to-MIDI solution available at this time.

this is not a new product.
That's subjective.
The GR-55 is mostly based on sample playback with some older generation modelling technology.
They're different products aimed at a different user base.
It's definitely not a copy of the GR-55.
