Tropical Storm Francine has strengthened to a hurricane and is approaching the Louisiana coast. This was reported by the US National Hurricane Center.
The storm is now located about 220 miles (355 km) southwest of Morgan City, Louisiana, and is moving northeast at 10 mph (16 km/h). Maximum wind speeds within the hurricane reach 75 mph (122 km/h).
Storm warnings have been issued for parts of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
Reuters, citing the US Coast Guard, reported that due to the approach of Francine, the port of New Orleans (Louisiana) is preparing to suspend the work of its marine and railway terminals. The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port and the ports of Morgan City and Houma are temporarily closed to shipping.
The tropical storm will hit the US coast as a Category 2 hurricane, meteorologists say. Wind speeds when it hits the New Orleans area will be up to 110 mph (177 km/h).
According to the New York Times, Louisiana has been dealing with persistent rainfall recently, and Francine will bring an additional 8 inches (200 mm) of rain on average and up to 1 foot (300 mm) in some areas.
“The cities of Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans (including the suburbs) will be most susceptible to flooding, with up to 4 inches (100 mm) of rainfall per hour possible,” the National Weather Prediction Center said.
According to meteorologists, the wind speed will decrease after the hurricane hits, but the precipitation brought by Francine will persist for several days. The Texas coast, Mississippi and northern Mexico will also be at risk of flooding.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry urged residents to “batten down the hatches” as Hurricane Francine hits the state within 24 hours, the Associated Press reports.
