Painting brick and using the laser cutter!

- In this episode we paint a plastic brick wall to make it look realistic. We then use my laser cutter ( finally, lol ) to make some steal girders. All of this is for the new section of the layout that we have been working on. Its another episode full of great tips and techniques. Hope you enjoy the video and happy modeling everyone!!!

I couldn't believe it . . . but there was a moving train on the layout! As for the video, you can save yourself a couple of steps, some drying time, and a whole lot of mess if you would do the mortar lines first, followed by dry sponging the brick color on last. Plus you totally eliminate the 'white fog' covering the brick face color when you apply the mortar color last.
I have many videos with trains running! Please see some of my other videos. The white fog that you mention gives it the aged look that I’m going for. The technique you mention works but is not the look I want. Thanks for watching!!!

Will have to check out that web site for detailed parts, I saw on the box they also have N scale parts also. Thanks for showing your method for brick mortar have been using Tamiya panel liner to do mortar let it dry for about 45 mins then use a damp tight cotton Q tip with70 % ISO rubbing lightly to remove pools or unwanted on bricks. That is going to be A great scene. The train ride from Utah to Denver was Awesome!!!!!!!!! Took 618 photos in 2 days.

As a kid model railroading I couldn't afford much so I used Mom's White Tooth paste for brick mortar in similar manner watered down. 😅

I hope your kits are not all geared for the 1920's or so as I model in the early 1970.
I'm really limited when buying foscale or bar mills kits as most are for a much older time period.

Those “pastels” that you have and brushed on look similar to weathering powders from Monroe Models. I have their Mini Weathering Powder Kit, which even has the same containers.
Wow that’s some of the best work I have seen done on a walthers kit! I was wondering if you would use the joint compound for mortar on a plastic kit like I’ve seen for the wood kits. Really cool to see how you did that. Thanks as always for showing your awesome work and techniques!
Thank you so much John!!! I really appreciate it! Yes I would still use joint compound on wood brick. Just make sure you seal it with a dull coat before you apply the joint compound.

So happy to see your Epilog Zing in operation! I can only imagine how much you’ve anticipated this upgrade. It takes modeling to a new level - but you do climb that steep learning curve with it. I’ve been waiting for my Epilog ever since I happily sold my complicated and fretful Chinese laser. It was supposed to come from an American company with English-speaking support. No quite so! It was made for people with far more electronic tinkering abilities than I have.
So I’ll keep waiting to afford an Epilog so that I can get back to the business of building wooden models. In the meantime I’ve had to have other people cut my designs.
Your back-wall project is fascinating! I love the way your girders and 3D printed details came together. Can’t wait to see all of the elements in place. Those plumbing parts are pieces I wish I had had access to when I built the Skykomish Substation. In those days (not so long ago in 2010) I had to build my parts by carving or finding something similar and buying a dozen kits! 3D and laser have brought the modeling hobby so many realistic options.

Progressing really good on your layout. I have been practicing on doing better brick walls. You do amazing work. You make it look easier then it really is. I am really interested in the laser cutters a lot. I been thinking getting one for several years. I am looking for to your videos about it and how you plan to do kits. I have always love the detail you can get with a laser cutters. I also been thinking of getting a 3d resin printer to do all the accessories need in building fully detailed models. Some things are hard to find depend on the Era your layout falls in especially figures from the late 1800's to early 1900's. I always look forward to your videos which I always learn different ways in model building. Thanks for sharing and be safe.👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

I swear your brick technique is the greatest and those girders you did on your laser are super cool. I just bought a small diode laser to do things like that and shingles. Do you have a source for the laser board you can share with us? I google it and it dont seem to like the term laser board very much. Do you plan on doing any video showing how you use your machine?

Could you spray paint the wall with gray and have that be the mortar? Then you could add red over that? Would that work? Why/why not? Thank you!
It doesn’t work as well because you usually end up get the brick color paint in the cracks. I’ve done it that way and dry brushed the brick but I was not happy with how it turned out. I think the technique I show gives a more realistic look and also an aged look.

I'm very slowly working on an n scale layoutl for myself and an HO layout with/for my two grandkids. I just bought some unbuilt n scale model buildings and some used HO buildings. The last few weeks I've been intently watching your videos and have taken lots of paper notes on how you do your work. I took the plunge a few days ago and bought a bunch of DecoArt Americana paints, brushes, and other supplies to get started on the artwork. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your time and work in making these videos. 🙂
I have done it that way, I used makeup sponges. There finer with less holes and hold the paint well so it won't get onto the mortar joints. Light hand will do it,

I have a maybe stupid question.
Will all your sections be aged the same in the final layout?
I am not from the USA, I am from Austria. So maybe my point of view is different.
I know it from my environment always that new and old things coexist. I think that's what creates the real tension.
From the building site to the ruin there was (and is) always all conditions in most places.
But I don't know if this is also the case in the USA?
Maybe it was common that something was built very quickly and then "run down" over years?
From an artistic point of view, it is of course attractive to create a "masterpiece" in one style. In a diorama or whole layout I find it also still really worth seeing. Because it usually deals with one theme. So it is OK. On film sets of series and films, it annoys me meanwhile very much... because I do not find it realistic. That's why I ask.

When painting the track in your video (2 years ago) you primer the flex track, was it not needed this time due to it being laid already? Will the craft paint not chip?
If you hand paint the track with a brush, I recommend a primer first. It will give your paint something to stick too which will make it easier. If your using an airbrush it’s not really necessary to use a primer. I have not had any of my paint chip off.

what kind of glue can be used to tie secure the plastic rail ties to cork road bed.
Jason what color primer is that used for the brick walls? also after you brush on the colored powder do you lock it down with another dull coat? if not what keeps it there vs rubbing off? thanks

Thank you so much!!! I did a google search for vintage soda signs. I found the Pepsi sign and dragged it on to my desk top. I then made it the size I wanted and then printed it.
