  • The Tubular Bind-Off is just as cool as the Tubular Cast-On when it comes to a pretty and invisible edge in your work.

I like your presentation. No long introduction, music or fanfare. Just go right to the lesson. Plus, your instructions are direct, modeled well, and move clearly from one step to the next. Thanks! I use your videos a lot when learning a new technique in knitting.

For anyone who may make the same mistake I did, this method needs the first stitch to be a knit stitch for it to look good. Easy enough to think back though. Great tutorial, thank you.

When you have two stitches left, you can only work the steps for those two stitches. So, first stitch - go in as if to knit, pull that stitch off. Second stitch - go in as if to purl, pull that stitch off.

Nice!! After watching this video a couple times, it finally clicked in my head and I was able to bind off all 186 rib stitches on a vest perfectly! Thank you so, so, so much for your no-nonsense explanations!! I really dislike tutorial videos that are needlessly long so this one immediately appealed to me.

This is my favorite rib bind off that I plan on using for toe up socks too. I always prefer a tubular bind on when it works well and recently did a tubular bind off on a top down sweater. It took forever but was more than worth it. Once you get the hang of it it gets easier and, believe me, I had plenty of time to master it when finishing that sweater.

Hello! I love all of your videos! You are my "go-to" for all questions. I now live in Portugal and go to a rather famous knit shop here in Lisbon to purchase beautiful Portuguese yarns that the owner has curated with 16 different sheep farmers. One of the employees there told me SHE learns from you, too. She's Portuguese, but she said you taught how to knit in Portuguese style. I have one big problem, however: I note this video is from 11 years ago. I know you have morphed and changed over time, but I really need help with the tubular bind off and when you knit in dark red, I have trouble seeing the stitches. Yes I'm getting older, but if you ever decide to redo this this, please use lighter yarn and also, add a slo mo version for people like me that need the step by step. Thank you so much for all you have done to help me be a better knitter.

The sequence is "knit, drop, purl, purl, drop, knit". It is also possible to do the last knit from behind in one single move instead of first bringing the yarn to the front.

I just wanted to make a helpful note-I kept messing up and couldn't figure out what i was doing. Turns out, between the last step that you show and the first step again, when the yarn is in the back and comes around to go 'front to back" into the first knit stitch, it MATTERS where the trailing end of the yarn is-it should be underneath when you go 'front to back' on that first knit stitch. I kept moving out of the way, taking that first stitch UNDER it, and it took me a long time to realize it was just moving the trailing end of the yarn that was messing me up! And don't forget the last part too. I did that a few times :D

The method is identical to tubular BO in the round except first and second st. I've watched several flat BO videos where the teachers reinvent the wheel with a different method as if in-the-round tutorials didn't exist. I've figured that for 1st and 2nd st one has to do a "set-up" by doing the second half of the sequence without dropping a st, ie, enter purlwise into the knit st, then enter knitwise into the purl st, and from there start the sequence at the first st to the end.

@andreasubissati Hmm...I haven't done this technique myself in an "in-the-round" situation, so I'm not sure. Just use your cut end and a tapestry needle, and seam it up to see what looks best. I'd love it if you'd get back to me and tell me what worked well!

As always, love the video. after watching the video, realized that it is five steps. I am finding it helpful is to do a 5 count to I know exactly where I am. I am using it to bind off a top down sweater with thick/thin yarn. I am not liking the result unfortunately. It looks too messy. The collar looks great, but the bind-off not so much. I do not think I am making mistakes, just don't like it as much as I did when I used a smooth yarn. Not sure why.

Hi, I don't think it's possible to do a tubular cast on or bind off with an odd number of stitches in the repeat. This is due to every knit stitch being 'sewn' to a purl stitch. This is true for both 1x1 tubular and 2x2. I'd be excited to know if you came up with a way to cast on or bind off with an odd number though, I sincerely hope you finished your project.

I've seen others do four rows of setup: row 1 k1, s1; row 2 s1, p1; row 3 k1, s1; row 4 s1, p1. Then do the sewing. What would be the reason for adding these extra 4 rows (or not doing them)?
