Mr. Ruocchio, I recently watched your interview with «Talking Story», and your mentioning of the Mythical Figure in «Sun Eater», Cid Arthur, as a mix of Siddhartha (Buddha) and King Arthur due to the Empire being primarily a mix of British and Indian Culture, made me straight away put «Empire of Silence» on my TBR List!
While I am waiting for my physcal copy, I read the preview of the first 5 chapters of «Empire of Silence», were I caught several possible cool references:
Jadd: Brought to my mind the Jaddite Faith from several Guy Gavriel Kay novels (which I found unsurprising given you had stated yourself as a fan of GGK with signed books by him (very jealous! 😄), in your interview with Jimmy Nutts), and possibly also Jeddah, an Ancient Port City in Modern Day Saudi Arabia
Birth Vats for the Nobility: While it is not an uncommon trope in SciFi (and I ascribe to the school of thought that tropes are literary tools to be played with), the rather offhanded interaction by Hadrian’s parents, made me immediately think of «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley, where «Mother» and «Father» are words of utmost taunt.
Hadrian’s home planet of Delos: Obvious, I thought of the Greek Island which served as a Holy Site for the worship of Apollo and Artemis and the Athenian-led Delian League which fought Sparta in the Peloponnesian War of the 5th Century BC, as well as the Mega-Corporation by the same name running the parks in «Westworld»
Hadrian’s brother Crispin: While there are several historical figures of that name, I quickly thought of the famous St. Crispin’s Day Speech from «Henry V»
The Alien Antagonists, the Cielcin: Given «Ciel» is French for «Sky», «Sky-sin» seem a good name for the Cosmic Equivalent to «the Scourge of God» Attila and his Huns!
Lothrian: Reminded me of a similar language structure as the Free City of Lorath from GRRM’s «ASOIAF, as well as Lotharingia/Lorraine in Modern Day France, which was the site of much French and German infighting in the last 500 years.
Hadrian’s family name Marlowe and their Devil Symbol: Christopher Marlowe wrote «Doctor Faustus», about the eponymous scholar who make a pact with the devil Mephistopheles (+ possibly a reversed color scheme of the Manchester United Devil Logo, given the Marlowes’ English Ancestry?)
The Mother of Hadrian’s Family Name of Kephalos: I originally thought of Caiaphas, the Jewish High Priest during Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection in the Bible, but I found Cephalus, whom Socrates have a dialogue with in Plato’s «Republic»a better fit, where Cephalus is asked to give a definition of justice, «to give each what is owed to them», which Socrates refutes by saying that returning a borrowed knife to someone who has turned mad and might therefore hurt themselves, is not just… Which I am expecting is a hint for more philosophizing on justice and madness further into the series!
    Cheers!

    Great video, super informative.
And just in case you don't know: "A light novel (ライトノベル, raito noberu) is a style of Japanese young adult novel primarily targeting high school and middle school students.[1][2] The term "light novel" is a wasei-eigo, or a Japanese term formed from words in the English language. Light novels are often called ranobe (ラノベ)[3] or, in English, LN. The average length of a light novel is about 50,000 words,[4] close to the minimum expected for a Western novel,[5] and they are usually published in bunkobon size (A6, 10.5 cm × 14.8 cm), often with dense publishing schedules.

I did know! The Lesser Devil is about that length (longer than a western novella), but since it's not really a "light novel" in the Japanese sense, I've been calling them "lite novels," as a bit of a personal joke.

Are there any plans for The Lesser Devil to be available on Kobo and/or is it available in epub anywhere other than Amazon? Thanks for your time.

I really need to get it up onto Kobo, I'm sorry. It's just one of those things I haven't taught myself to do. I'll try and make it a priority here in the near future.

@@SunEaterBooks Ah right, I forgot that one was self-published. Thanks for the prompt response, I just picked up Empire of Silence on Kobo (holding out for a HC reprint) so there's no rush from me at least. Good luck mastering the ways of the epub/Kobo store!
