guitar pickups wound by different people and blindfolded rob has to guess their pin numbers
They are in the wrong business trying to fog guitars, they should be trying to hone Rob's mad senses and becoming a travelling freak show act.
😂👍
I've come to realize I spend nearly as much time watching vids about guitars as actually playing them.
duh
i've never even touched a guitar my whole life
Join the crowd 😂
That squier classic vibe, if my memory serves me right, has been judged as an expensive guitar on almost every single one of this kind of video! Shows how good their value is.
I have a Squier Classic Vibe 72 Thinline. Maybe I can set a guitar up better now, but it plays better than my original/stolen 72 Thinline!
They're great guitars.
They leave a little bit to be desired in all aspects of the guitar. Regardless... still fantastic.
I own that guitar, exactly the same colour bought from Andersons ex display so I always wondered if there’s a chance it’s the same one from the video. Everyone who plays it says it sounds amazing, and I completely agree. I played about 10 guitars and that one was the best sounding and feeling.
@@maksqwe1 ò
Bought a gold Classic Vibe 50s for my little sister who probably strummed on it ONCE before deciding "no, I dont want to learn guitar" and sitting on it forever instead of giving it to me. Which...whatever, thats her right, but damn. What a waste.
G&L are criminally underrated. Never thought about purchasing one but every time I hear them they sound amazing.
Their resale value is horrible compared to a fender.
Just like Godin guitars are too both.hidden gems
Colin Olsen Interesting view. I've personally never bought a guitar thinking that I'd sell it one day. I guess some people do and then their worried how much money they'll get out of it?
Do it. They're incredible.
@@TheProgGuy
What do you base that on? Your ignorance?
That's the new model name for the Jaguar, then? Castratocaster?
Fender Stratodisaster.
@@kardRatzinger why does everyone shit on the jag? It's great.
@@wiggledixbubsy98 I personally dislike it, even more than other Fenders (by that I mean Fender guitars, I like Fender bases and especially amps), but to each his own.
@@kardRatzinger What's wrong with other Fenders though? I get the Jag has a weird bridge/trem and complicated controls with a very glassy sound. Those are justifiable reasons to avoid it, but people hate on Jazzmasters and Mustangs, too, and I just think "why"?
@@wiggledixbubsy98 I don't like the looks of them, I don't like the the bolt-on necks, the weak, noisy pickups, and most of all, I don't like how they sound. And I don't just mean the offset Fenders, I dislike strats and teles as well.
I'd like to see a blindfolded rig-choosing. Give both the Cpt and the Chappers a selection of maybe 3 guitars, 3 amps and 3 pedals (of the same type) and have them choose their favourite combination without seeing what they pick. Might be a bit too convoluted, but something along those lines would be cool to see (pun intended).
Thats actually really interesting like wich would you choose for the rest of your life blindfolded
Interesting! And the sets should cover 3 different price ranges.
Yes please!
It's a good idea. If you are ever in Outer Mongolia I will buy you a slice of yak cheese.
I really like this as well.
I've got to say: Rob has amazing hearing! Throughout all of these 'blindfold' videos, he has impressed me with a very discerning ear. Incredible, really.
Pretty much nailed it! 💪
He nails it 95% of the time. I've watched loads of these and he rarely gets it wrong.
@@SgtSteel1 Almost as though someone TOLD him....
@@jonvelde5730 I can be jaded and cynical at times too, but there’s no reason to believe that’s the case
@@jonvelde5730 but on the Head or pedal he get only 1 or 2 right
21:40 "Well you could sell it to me for more money, then it would be expensive"
**Fender would like to know your location**
@Edgy McEdgelord both but Lee is holding a Squier so
Michael Coholich they havent
Those G&L models destroyed everything else that was played tonewise. I never knew they were so rich sounding.
Oh and I have to give it to Rob, he also destroyed this challenge. Well done Chappers.
2 years later: I love it when Rob interprets a Squier Classic Vibe as being a really expensive Strat.
Castrated strat is the best description I've ever heard.
The castratocaster.
@@MeatisMagic256 yes please
Well, Jaguars pickups are very similar to a Strat's (except for 1M pots, that makes them sound treblier), but the neck is shorter (24") ... So it's not an entirely unfitting description. :)
castrato?
I have a strastrated cat at home. It's a handful.
Now do this for humbuckers vs mini humbuckers vs hot rails
that would be a really nice one, sad i didn't think of it myself :o
Ironically might be the best video ad for G&L guitars of all time. Having them just murder the Fenders side by side is impressive!
Fender position 4 and 2 still better i think, more quacky
Legends say that Chapman can hear grass growing from a mile away.
All three G&L guitars stole the show for me, and are now firmly on my radar.
Should've tossed In a Danelectro with lipsticks just for fun
Yeah, or a really old guitar with bar magnet types.
@@SgtSteel1 p90 uses bar magnets.
That G&L Comanche, amazing sound!
Yea it looks a bit ridiculous but my word I love the sound
Best sound out of the bunch
Those z-coils are really their own kind of thing, neither single coil nor humbucker, its the reason why in the bass world nothing sounds quite like a precision bass
A Comanche has been my #1 for years now. Amazingly flexible.
@@timgrzecki6539 My favourite too
I was astounded when he guessed the Les Paul coil tapped. I never would've even thought of that as a possibility, let alone be able to perfectly identify it.
"put it on high gain....and dont play anything" i lost it hahahaha!
The editor, Rory (I hope...) is, once again, the star of these challenges - even more so than Rob's amazing bat-like ears. His sense of humour, and fun, with the images presented to him by Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee elevate the videos to such a degree, I wonder if people are watching because of him, or because of the Glimmer Twins, front and centre. Fantastic job!
Wow
That little jam on that Comanche- best lead sound on a strat I’ve heard in recent memory
I learned two things from this, P90 LPs are the best, and I really want a G&L now!
I have that Pelham Blue 2018 LP Classic. Incredible sounding. You do have to adjust the pickups a little differently, but you can get some ridiculously sweet tones. Also it's very heavy and basically a solid piece of wood.
Steven Malinoski p90s are amazingly great sounding pickups,I have a p90 loaded Les Paul, but you can’t beat a pair of Seymour Duncan humbuckers on a les Paul
I've been wanting a G&L ASAT special Tribute Irish Ale for some time. Completely underrated guitars for sure.
I used to crap on p90s because of how they look but dang have I changed my mind after this
I just bought a Gibson Les Paul BFG with P90's and after spending a few days with it, I'm amazed! These pickups can do it all. My humbucker guitars all sound like mud next to it.
Gotta love it! Both G&ls were loved for their tone. G&L guitars are killer. Rob is amazing! The castrated Strat! Good job! And the Comanche is my favorite. Z-Coils are so snotty!
Except there were 3 G&L's in the contest. S-500, Comanche, and ASAT Special. Have owned quite a few G&L's over the years. Still own an F-100. Love 'em!
that ASAT sounded amazeballs, also the comanche sounded great clean when Lee played it.. I'm discovering I really like the tone of G&L guitars
Chappers has to guess who from the shop/crew's dong it is by them slapping it against the cheapest washburn , distorted and clean
I'd watch this.
Huh?
Was that even a sentence?
Makes absolutely no sense.
@@IPushHard You even english bruh
Legendary.
@@IPushHard I had to read it twice to get it..... The sentence could have been structured better.
The G&L sounds killer! (the first one)
I'd ask for silence, hi gain and gate removed to determine which was which. :)
The G&L Tele sounded lovely!
That ASAT is a chuffin bargain
So, if you get half of them wrong, are you getting a P45?
For the benefit of our foreign friends, a P45 is the official tax form you get when you are fired or leave a job in the UK.
So it all makes sense. He gets fired because he got the half wrong although he should know the script.
Actually one of the best comments I've seen in ages
ROFL
Peel P45 from top gear :D
Still my favorite channel for great reviews delivered in a very entertaining way with a lot of info and sound profiles of the guitars. Love you guys!
14:01- I believe the term you're looking for is: Castrato-caster
Blindfold El Capitan and have him guess which presenter is playing. Have them try to throw him off. Is that Rabea playing blues? Or Pete imitating Chapman's extremely talented rendition of "widdly-diddly squeel"?
DO IT
Lee isn't allowed to smell them, though.
Blindfold Chappers and have him do it too :P
69th like on your comment lol
In every blindfold video where there's a Squier classic vibe, Rob always thought they're expensive. Awesome. Just says how the classic vibe telecaster and stratocaster are both amazing that could stand toe to toe with the other expensive guitars.
1. Well done Rob. 2. G&L - wow! Don't tell the wife there's another guitar I've got to try!
Very nice. Those G&L pickups are attention getters IMO, that sound is amazingly warm and smooth.
I'm really impressed by Rob Chapman, he really nailed that challenge, I wasn't expecting that. That was a great video, really enjoyed it.
Well thanks to the blurring of Capt's hand when writing on the board, I now have Tea on my keyboard... Thanks 😅😂
I dont get it. Some cultural thing?
@@morti_garcia "A commonly repeated legend claims that the two-fingered salute or V sign derives from a gesture made by longbowmen fighting in the English and Welsh [27] archers at the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War, but no historical primary sources support this contention." (The Hundred Years War: Battle of Agincourt". britishbattles.com.) Wikipedia
What made it funnier is that Rob waved an extended middle finger (totally without malice) at the pedal board multiple times, and they didn't get blurred.
Love that Asat special
Very impressive seeing how well Rob can determine the pickups! Quite enjoyable to watch, thanks guys! Agreed with so many people below that the G&L's all sounded great!
The editing was fantastic!
I'd love to see an Epiphone Casino review. It's a normally glossed over gem of the Epiphone range that this channel has rarely come into contact with. Maybe an affordable hollow body video with jazz boxes and whatnot. Other than that, great video gents. A G&L ASAT Special is definitely on my list now.
Lee's playing is getting better and better. Lots of licks and things I haven't heard from him in this. Well done.
I'm loving this as I own a G&L usa ASAT special.
Great fun video as always. Simply stunned by the quality and wit of the editing. It really is a signature part of these shows and elevates them something really special. Like the BBC mantra. Educate, Inform and Entertain. Wicked.
What I learned from these challenges:
Squier CV guitar: "Sounds expensive"
G&L: "Best sounding so far"
i’ve watched this a few times, over the years..
it’s a great video.
and G&Ls really kick ass!!
thanks , once again guys
cheers from Portugal
Man rob and lee are the best. Been watching your videos since nearly the beginning and they’re so consistently good. Always makes me wanna pick up my guitar and play
Blindfold Challenge : Can you identify the green guitar?!
THIS... 7:41
Billy Corgan thinks he can
revistinha1 yes it sounds greeeennnn
Yes, it's that green coloured one!
@@thebreakfastmenu He probably could, honestly.
Please do a two-part blindfold challenge!
Part 1: Grab one guitar, one amp, and a bunch of similar pedals. Go through and rank your favorite pedals of the lot.
Part 2: Do the exact same thing... 3 days or a week later. Same guitar. Same amp. Same pedals. See how similar or different your rankings are.
The Point: How much are our "favorites" dependant on the day vs. the actual sound.
Crazy, how Spot on the Chappers was. Hats off to him.
I’m so happy for another blindfold challenge, you guys are the best.
Blindfolded guitar cable test please! Does a $100+ cable make a difference?
This needs to happen! Let the captain and chappers both guess the cables. And don't forget the coily cable!
Yes it makes A direct difference in how much money you have left over to buy strings and picks.
Probably couldn't tell a 3€ cable from 100€ one XD
Well if its a test of how much abuse the cables can take, then I'm all ears.
*****no*****
Thanks for the video. I always dismissed G&L as also ran but my opinion changed quite drastically after watching this video. I was impressed with all three of the models shown. They all made the excellent CV seem a bit plain sound uninspiring in comparison. I was surprised to say the least.
G&L are going to be loving this video - Chappers liked every one of their guitars that were involved in this challenge.
And now a word from our sponsor... G&L. We all watched this and came away thinking G&L are outstanding. Job done.
I closed my eyes and agreed with Chap on all of them. I have 2 guitars with hum buckers 1 with P90's and one with fender style singles. Most of the time I can barely tell a difference between the hum buckers and the P90's other than the 90's are brighter
Man, I really dig the sound of that Comanche!
Me too! I had no idea they exist. I wouldn't know what to play on it, it isn't my style, but I love the sound.
Gotta love the editing! Rory you are amazing.
Nicely well performed on those beautiful guitars, Captain! Love this series and Rob has awesome hearing to find the differences between single coils and humbuckers! Impressive. Well played, good sir.
Methinks the G&L's kicked bottom! Fantastic ears Rob, and G&L are fantastic guitars!
My favorite sounds were at the end when Rob was playing metal on the G&L
Unfair test, and amazing results from Rob! Thanks guys
I've come to the realization that I'll watch you two do just about anything. Always entertaining!
"Do you have a tuning pedal?"
I love you guys.
I would love to see a blindfold shootout with small 1x12 tube amp. Blackface Fender, Vox AC15, PRS Sonzera, Boogie, ect. Lots of players are looking for good small combo amps around 15 to 30ish watts. Everyone is doing modeling videos. But us tube guys are looking for that full sounding tube amp that can be pushed to get that warm tube breakup. Huge fan of the show. I'm over here in Lafayette, Louisiana, and I share tons of your videos with my musician friends. You guys are too funny. Love it! Keep up the great work. Your the only show that has great humor , at the same time, giving great insight on new gear. By the way Lee, your playing has gotten so much better over the years. Nice job. Nice vibrato.
I second the induction of rob’s eats into the rock and roll hall of fame!! He’s untrickable!!! Amazing! Your both great keep the videos rolling
Yes! This one is interesting to see. Love the blidfolded challenges!
Actually Rob got the ASAT right (surprise!) as well: he called high-powered single coils OR P90s. I am in awe how good Rob is at those blindfold challenges. Keep them coming, I highly enjoy these videos :D
GREAT editing at 14:20. I watched that three times! Hilarious.
I like it when Lee plays a lot. so bluesy and relaxing and not too busy!
You guys are so blessed! Like in heaven, friends , pedals, amps and guitars in a god old Andertons!
AKA "Capt Lee plays a G Chord followed by bluesy, jazzy runs."
“The old jaguar and jazzmaster fans are a devilish bunch” LMAO!
doesn't matter what we wanna see..... everything you fellas do is just awesome and makes totally my day! gonna be at andertons on 20th december -
cheers
all of these blindfold challenges are awesome! I love watching these videos!
The pickups on a jaguar aren't that different from a strat, aside from the little "teeth" on the side that do absolutely nothing, the majority of the sound change comes from the 1M potentiometers instead of 250k on a strat, which allows a lot more high-frequency to pass through.
And if you keep the same volume out of the amp, adding high-range is about the same as removing mid and low-end, which makes the "castrated strat" comment quite apt.
Also, if you really want to get a good phat sound out of a stock jaguar, put it in rhythm circuit (horn switch in "up" position), roll down the treble (nearest to bridge) to about 1/3rd and put a bit of overdrive on it.
bami2 Wouldn't the slant of the strat pickup make a difference too?
@@gvtshorts2024 very little I'd say
did Lee have the strangle switch engaged or disengaged?
@@gvtshorts2024 The slant adds treble to the bridge pickup of a strat, since the poles for the thinner strings are closer to the bridge (or further away from the neck, where the strings vibrate the largest amplitude), they sound brighter.
So if you were to slant the bridge pickup of a jag, it would sound even brighter than it already is, which would probably get you on some WWF watchlist for destroying the ability of nearby bats to echolocate.
But the change you would get from un-slanting the strat pickup pales in comparison to installing 1000k pots in a strat, as that would be a true castratocaster.
I build and modify tube amplifiers. Generally there are a very small db of frequencies 'removed' when you add more of any equalizing option that is a passive eq circuit.
All you can do is cut frequencies, either high pass or low pass, based on the values you have chosen with your pots/resistors and caps in the tone circuit.
You can download a very small program called Tone Stack Calculator that will allow you to play with these values and the circuits while giving you a spectrum read out of the frequencies.
Blindfolded playing different Ibanez RGs to see if you can feel the difference between a standard, premium, prestige and J Custom.
Loved the Z-Coil !!!
That Comanche sounds sooo good!! Love it!
The American Original 60s jag linked to above (presumably what Lee actually played) does not have special 'hot' pickups as on your whiteboard. Nor does it have Pure Vintage 65 pickups as your website says. It has AV62 pickups. Yet again Andertons displays how much they know about offsets. ;)
Tim W uncultured swines
Does anyone care about offsets? ;)
@@tomholton235 Yes.
My thoughts exactly - living in my bubble I always think everyone is into offsets and understands them, then I stumble across these videos and I realize that yes, most of the guitar playing population still gravitates around Strats and Teles and Les Pauls...
@@jaymaster77 Sadly. I played offsets in my local guitar store and I want to throw my strat away. The Jazzmaster sounded best
The ASAT Special sounded amazing! Perhaps need a T style Chapman with those fat P90ish single coils?
Even though I'm a Bass Player I love watching these Rob Blind Fold Tests! Rob Knows his STUFF!
This video made a great case for the ASAT Special. Jangly but more going on than just that.
the first squier sounds great to me ! does anyone share the same opinion ?
I thought it was pretty good too
Squire guitars are a lottery. I have played atrocious strats' and recently a £120 Tele' which sounded and played better than any Tele' costing up to £1000.
I liked it better than the gl, just sounded more strat like also loved the neck p90, wasn't the jag designed as a surf guitar
That rabbit face had me lol for a good few minutes. You're killing me Rory. Please continue to be awesome.
Lee sure loves that G chord
The toggle on the Comanche is a 7-way switch. It adds the options of bridge+neck and all 3 pickups.
Chappers said that the jaguar sounded like the bass had been shelved, well yeah, the bass strangle switch is on, lol
I’ve watched a number of Anderton videos. Chappers has an excellent ear, especially when he is listening to an instrument that is not heavily overdriven. This explains why he is such a good player.
Great vid! Amazing ears on Rob! Also, his playing on the Comanche was awesome!
Nice work Rob!
Can we do a blind folded challenge where chappers just gets to smell various guitars and has to guess the brand name?
He DID guess a Les Paul on another video by its smell! He said they have a unique smell.
Once again, dumbfounded by the complexity, and the detail, that Rob hears with.
Next do vintage vs new blindfolded, no touchie.
i've thoroughly enjoyed re watching these blindfold challenges with Lee & Rob. What a great time :)
Rob is really great at all these blindfold test - amazing! I have an Epi Plus Top Pro that he thought was a Gibson LP on an earlier video and so I am really happy that it was a rare time he was fooled. He is just amazing on these tests. He also tends to say good things about the Classic Vibes when blindfolded. Haha, Jaguar is a castrated strat - I think he nailed it there.
I’m assuming this was set up so that feedback from the single coils wouldn’t be a dead giveaway?
p90s are probably the best sounding pickups. If they didn't hum I'm sure they'd be in way more guitars
what about the p rail humbuckers with the p90s in them? would the humbuckers get rid of that? I'm new to this part of guitar
@@Sam-me5pl while having a p-rail in the p90 position, they basically work like any other p90 and hum just like any other - as does the rail when selected at its own. you have to activate both the rail and the p90 to have the cancellation.
@@ithemba My P-90 Epi Blueshawk has a 'dummy-coil' between the pickups.....they do ~not~ hum.
@@hippiekarl7 wow good for you man, but does that relate in any way shape or form to anything that I wrote about a specific question about the seymour duncan p-rail pickup?
Cough*Comanche*cough
This vid convinced me to buy that exact ASAT. Advertising works!
I was listening, rather than watching this (doing stuff on another tab). I spotted the G&L every time. They have a distinctive richness which is complex and really interesting.
A bit off-topic, perhaps, but can someone explain the logic behind the G&L split pickups? The concept, I absolutely love, but... why aren't they the other way around? Like, have the poles under the wound strings closer to the bridge for a tighter response, great for riffs, and have the poles under the unwound strings closer to the neck, for a warmer sound. That makes so much more sense in my mind.
Yes. Same goes with the strat bridge pu
I won't claim to know the actual reason but here's how I think about. The guitar features bass and treble tone knobs that can take away unwanted bass or treble. So why not start from the clearest highs and fullest bass and then subtract? As someone that loves clarity, nothing drives me crazy more than pickups that are purposely darker at 10 on the Volume and tone knobs and only get darker from there. It's much easier to take away frequencies after the fact then trying to add frequencies that aren't there to begin with. This way people don't have to buy aftermarket pickups just because the guitar was made for people that don't like treble. It allows everyone to tweak to taste.
Leo basically just took the concept of a precision bass pickup and put it on a guitar splitting the coil to silent the hum while still having the clarity of a sc, i think the logic there was to have a wider bass and tighter treble (idealized for use on bass) also the upper part of the pickup is situated right where the natural harmonic occurs so i think that had to do with it, hope that helps
Good question Mr. Blacksteen! I'd be interested in knowing the answer to that myself.
My guess is the 1 cm or less in between the halves doesn't make a noticable enough difference one way or the other. Probably need a greater change in distance to notice a positioning change.
