My favourite band has been Deep Purple pretty much since I was 4 years old and my dad first played me "Made in Japan" on LP. I'm turning 33 in about a week, and I still worship at the altar of Ritchie Blackmore. He's my favourite guitarist, no one can play guitar with such ferocity and fire like he did with Deep Purple Mk.II and III. I fully blame him for my obsession of big headstock Strats and I even wrote my dissertation about him. When I moved to London from Sweden to study music my dad gave me a copy of Made in Japan on CD so that I'd always have it with me. I cried like a baby when Blackmore walked onto the stage with Blackmore's Night when I saw them live, he has just meant so much to me in my life. What I'm coming to with this story is the fact that Simon is the perfect fit for Deep Purple. He has that fire in his playing that I've missed with Steve Morse in the band. Don't get me wrong, Steve Morse is a guitar god, but to me his playing never fit into Deep Purple's music like Ritchie did and like Simon now does. So hats off to Simon from a massive Deep Purple fan. Loved the video!
Love Steve … he saved Purple really, but I agree, Simon is a better fit for Purple. Identify with what you’re saying about Ritchie. I’m a (serious) 😀amateur guitarist and have been a Purple fan since 1970 (aged 12) when I saw them live on TV, headlining a gala concert for the opening of the Festival hall in London. Hearing Purple play Mandrake Root with Ritchie’s stage presence, sound and theatrics with the music, was overwhelming. Purple on the Machine head tour, is still the best live musical experience I’ve ever had. No one could touch Ritchie in his prime .. or Purple, as a band IMO. Blackmore’s Night had to cancel their Edinburgh show, on the night, because Candice had flu .. so I’ve yet to see them. Ritchie is almost as striking on acoustic as electric and these days I prefer when he plays acoustic. Good luck with your career.

I love the way this guy plays. Recently discovered him watching a Deep Purple video on UA-cam. I was immediately impressed with his playing. Anyone who says PRS guitars have no mojo need to watch him and be proven wrong.
Agreed, I think PRS just allow you to impart your own mojo onto them instead of overpowering your sound with their own. The only people who make PRS sound bland are bland players
People that say PRS guitars have no soul grew up listening to Gibsons and Fenders. 20 years from now players will be playing PRS guitars and saying Gibson and Fender guitars have no soul 😉
Deep Purple are now back to their best since Blackmore! Simon's playing has made a HUGE difference and is of a more bluesy/tone which suits the band more than an american style of playing
For anyone wondering what PRS model, Simon is playing here: that's a PRS Custom 24 35th Anniversary model. It has the 85/15 pickups in it, but instead of the usual 5-way blade switch, it uses the same controls as the 408 and ''Paul's Guitar'' models.

@ thanks, I know. Just was confused that in USA made narrow TCI pickups are used(as on Paul’s guitar). Simon’s looks like SE Custom 24-08( with normal size pickups) but from Private Stock.
I saw a clip of Simon from around 2015, doing a PRS demo and was instantly hooked. I'm a huge Gary Moore fan, and I could hear that same fire in Simon's playing. As my guitar teacher would say, "he's a badass mo'fo".
"I don't wanna to sound like Richie, I don't wanna sound like Steve, I don't wanna sound like you know Satriani. I wanna be me." And that will do quite nicely, thank you. Hey Dan and Mick! Love you guys!
I got a free ticket for Deep Purple last year, far outside my usual wheelhouse, and this guy didn't really put a foot wrong all night. Always gotta give dues to that level of professionalism and consistency in a challenging set. Those big stages aren't very kind either some nights I think.
Saw deep purple live last year and didn’t know the guy… he was ridiculously good and doing such a fine job between respecting the famous parts and putting his own touch … very deserved gig for sure ! Not a show off guitarist but his level of precision and feeling is unreal ! Great episode ❤
Wow! Just caught up with this episode. This is what Purple needed, a proper rock guitarist, something lacking in recent years. Will be interesting to see how the next Purple album sounds, hopefully a bit nearer back to their roots. Great guitar skills, really nice modest guy. Thanks for getting him on. Awesome pedal board too!
My very first record in 1974 was a Deep Purple record which inspired my love of loud music and Stratocasters which still drives me nearly 50 years later. Great to see Simon upholding such a wonderfull legacy. Great show, (as usual). Thanks guys.
I think Simon McBride might be my new favourite (since the passing of Jeff Beck). He's perfect for Deep Purple - he matches or surpasses my hero Ritchie Blackmore's accuracy, nonchalance, pick clarity, flash, and subtle melodic innovation - and even his vaudeville and variety aspects. Congratulations! I'm now wanting to see Simon's Purple live or on DVD very eagerly.
Seeing Deep Purple in 2022 shows how the game has evolved keeping an eye (or two, or three most times) to the past. I really enjoyed the show I was at, but Simon blew my mind. Honestly, I’m young enough that it feels impossible for me to have seen them live, but I did. So yeah, what a show it was and what a player Simon is.
I have been telling people about Simon for years and always knew he was destined for greatness! He is the best Irish guitarist since Gary Moore, I hope I get to See DP with him, as I only saw them with Ritchie!
Fun show today with a great guest! Whichever kind of music you like, it would be difficult not to like Simon. Obviously talented and professional, he has such a terrific attitude. He’s grateful to be in Deep Purple and appears to be making the most of it; i.e., having mucho fun playing in the band! Thanks Dan & Mick for having Simon on the show.
Totally deserved Simon getting the gig. I've followed his progress since seeing him do demos for PRS for a local music store in Newcastle. Young lad with a mop of curly hair very different from today, an absolutely amazing player ( he was back then) also seeing him doing his own stuff with his own band. On top of that a thoroughly nice fella :)
Absolutely amazing. Simon might be the best rock guitar player I've ever heard. So interesting to listen to and dynamic. Blinding speed that he uses sparingly, which makes it sound a lot more impactful, something that the likes of Yngwie completely miss. It’s great to hear him say how lucky he is to be in Deep Purple but they're equally lucky to have him.
Mick and I both broke into a big smile at the same time when Simon plays this descending major arpeggio thing and switches to a minor tonality, so cool 😎
Just a return view. The section around 1:06 about Ritchie, a strat and a Marshall and the purists, but that combination, minus Ritchie and noted live with Ritchie, being unruly, reminded me of Yngwie because that's what he does, plays a strat through Marshalls but can control the beast. That's what is so impressive about his abilities.
What a great Rock rig that is, and Simon’s playing is just astonishing, i’ve seen him in demo’s on and off and always thought wow, but his playing is just so articulate, and in complete control. If Purple tour down my way i’ll be out to see them for sure.
Simon is an absolute 1st class guitar player, uber flexible and 100% focused on his craft. He knows what to play and when but is just so good at adding those little amazing nuances that seperate him from anyone else. He is an awesome guitarist and looks like a thoroughly nice approachable chap. This was a great session and interview and I am very jealous for his pedal board … and guitar mastery… sound … well all of it actually! Well done Dan and Mick for another great output!
I remember listening to his original album way back and knowing this guy was special. There's a version of him doing Little Wing to a backing track in a guitar shop. It's absolutely magic. This guy is special. One of the best out there. He could go toe to toe with the best 👌
Such a great guy and a well-deserved spot in a classic band! I do hope the solo material keeps coming...been a fan of Simon for a long time and have greatly enjoyed his solo output.
I loved the bit where Simon was showing how to play 'Smoke on the Water'. And he was emphasising playing it simply and straightforward. Then the other guy said, "You forgot the pinch harmonic". And Simon said, "I'll leave that to Zak". 😅😅😅 Zak really loves his pinch harmonics.
Saw them back in 73 or 74, one of the loudest shows ever (White Stripes or Killers may have been louder). I remember Lazy John Lord rocking that organ back in forth. Digital now is so much different than back in the 80's. Ladder DAC chips with less digital filters compared to 1 bit converters now with crappy digital filters just don't do it. Sitting here building an amp for Barenaked Ladies. They use in-ear and ISO cabs because they can walk into any venue and get the same sound. They also feed back the live signal with several mics so they get the full feel of the crowd and their live sound. Great show, brings back some great memories of my crazy High School days riding the trolley downtown to see a show with all my friends!
I saw Simon for the first time on stage in Trondheim, Norway in October 2022, together with Deep Purple and he was great and the guitar sound was great too.
Incredible playing and tone. That accuracy! AND to Simon's point with Pace and Glover, saw Purple some time ago and I've never heard anything like those freight train grooves they do. My jaw was on the floor just watching those two. So powerful and full of emotion and just life, there's just no real way to convey or even explain that experience. Thank you.
He's an absolute monster! Undoubtedly one of my favourite guests you've had on the show, I've re-watched the previous visit many times, I can see this one might be returned to...
What a musician and what feel. Dialled in and bucket loads of personality and individual style. That guitar was singing. Can't wait to hear the new Deep Purple album. I have a feeling it will be damn good. Hats off Simon. Dan and Mick! You know where it's at. The cream rises to the top \m/
Wow!!!! I’ve always loved Simon McBride, his Lukatherish way to play is absolutely astonishing! I’ve learned many tricks from his solo production and I have to say his licks are perfect in many different situations! Another splendid video, TPS, love ya unconditionally!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Simon, Gents, I'm watching the playout for the third time and holy geebus Simon :) your feel for timing is so thick man! So good. I rewound twice more for the time it took me to make this comment...so good man. Thanks TPS
Dan and Mick, thank you so much for this episode. I almost didn't watch it because I didn't know who Simon was but man am I glad i did. Holy cats can this dude play with such sweetness and such ferocity! My jaw was on the floor. Such a mega video and mega player. And you two are legends for having him on. Bra-frickin-vo!!
Saw Simon at a pedal demo in a guitar shop in Glasgow , played great good banter then went for a pint then a curry only to meet Simon with the guys from the shop . So happy he’s got the Purple gig , well deserved!!
Almost a surreal place to find yourself in... fascinating back story though. Fascinating. Blackmore was a ridiculously prodigious talent in his day and to be following on in those shoes is a hell of a place to find yourself. And Morse was no slouch either. The gratifying thing these days is that Purple all appear to be more settled and happy than they've been for many years which has to be a great thing.
Dan and Mick, Been binge-watching your videos during a three week case of covi* . Really like them. As an AV production specialist, I enjoy the recording/equipment aspect more than anything. I've owned and looked at my Kalamazoo bass since 1977 and can't play a lick... Maybe one day! When I bought it I saw a Morley Wahwah pedal and was floored at the sound but could never afford it. Again, maybe one day... Wishing you all the best!
Such an inspiring and wonderful episode. Lovely to hear a Belfast accent too (my Dad hailed from there, so it's an accent I relish when I get the chance to hear it - one benefit of regularly donating blood is that their call centre is based there!). Always lovely to see both of you blown away by another's playing, just ace levels of humility and humanity throughout. What a joyful addition to my Friday. After Bill Bailey's demonstrating answering the door to Jehovah's Witnesses in a Metal style last night live in Tewkesbury (playing an SG through a Marshall half stack no less), this was exactly what was needed to keep my happiness on that level! Thanks guys :)
I saw and heard Simon last July with Deep Purple for the first time, live here in Italy. I was soooo happy to hear him: he has an enormous sound on stage, he plays flawless both slow and fast runs, he has a great vibrato and dynamic too. It reminds me some Lukather on steroids and a sort of Satriani but with his own personal taste. Really enjoyable on the new record too, he's amazing. I am so happy that I have discovered him!
37:15 There's a story about David Gilmour and his ability to hear. He was complaining about one of his amp heads making a weird noise. No one could hear what he was talking about. Either way, he told his tech to replace that head with a backup. So the guy takes the head behind stage and decides to prove that Gilmour is making it up. So he walks back out with the exact same head, plugs it in. Gilmour plays a few notes and then he goes "This one sounds the same. Did you just bring the old one back?"
Another fantastic artist, thanks so much. And boy, he can play. Grats on this awesome gig! DP is a great band in the most musical sense, sorry intellectuals but imo they are up there with the best UK bands formed in the 70s. p.s. on the side fills: that's my fave stage setup ever, sadly totally out of fashion. Kudos to those who don't have to compromise, Neil Young and Crazy Horse also doing this forever.
It's impossible to say that one is the best. Ritchie is a legend and his influence and contribution can't be underestimated. And Steve was one of the greatest players out there long before he joined Purple and with them his playing always was just absolutely incredible.
@metramaks well actually Ritchie is the Deep Purple😊. May be DP have a best player since Ritchie left the band. It's true. Simon sounds raw, clear, a lot of pentatonics which is fit the DP sound. So he what they realy were need since Blackmore left.
Haven't checked out Simon play with DP yet, and probably not popular call but I love Tommy Bolin best in his brief role with them. Come Taste the Band is masterful.
If I could ever make more than one person shake their heads in amazement, a la 1:13:41, then I've done alright!!! Simon is such a great player. Been lucky enough to have seen his solo band live...even had my shred-buddy in awe!
purely as a punter who likes to get "down the front", one of the weirdest experiences at a recent gig was seeing a well known metal band playing with a silent stage. I'm of a certain age and when I was a kid in the early 70's, Deep Purple Mach2 was it. It's very nice to know they're still keeping that flame going
Simon gave me my first proper guitar lesson about 25 years ago at his family home in County Antrim! I thought I was a decent enough player until I met Simon 😩 he was always destain for greatness ✌️
Awesome video. Im so happy, that there are still bands like Deep Purple, keeping the Rock the original way. The impression from concert made with loud stage and valve power stage kicking air is very different from silent stage and all thru PAs. On another not, I just cant be helped with PRS ... the moment Simon played Dans RED, I was like "Finally proper rock guitar sound". And great honor for Dans instrument. Simon is awesome and I get, that PRS guitars are so well made, consistent, indestructible and what not. But they are missing something for me.
Superb episode! I saw Mr McBride when he supported Joe Satriani on the Black Swans tour but his playing here is absolutely sublime - man those toanz! Congratulations on the Deep Purple gig! I am excited for an album of Deep Purple songs written by him, it will be magnificent.
This is one of my favoriter of 24. Been back many times to watch this. Lovely stuff indeed.
I’ve heard a lot of people play fast, but there’s something different about how Simon does it. It’s so clear and articulate. It’s never just a flurry of notes… It’s a musical movement. Pure brilliance.
You're spot on..... I couldn't agree more...!!!
Ele não é um guitarrista olímpico....e isso me agrada!😊
He’s intentional about what he plays, instead of throwing his fingers around in some widdly pattern and fluffing every second note.
I must’ve slowed down 39:40 and listened 20 times and still don’t know how he played that 😂
Blackmore is the grandfather of neo classical hard rock style..RB gaves massivw influence to many new guitarists in the 80s such as Phil Collen Randy Fhoads Janick Gers etc...

Simon was a teacher of mine for a number of years down in Dublin. Great guy and stellar player!

One of my fav players for about ten years now. And his singing is really good, sounds like prime Lukather at times
Holy Sh*t!! That was some serious next level playing. Fantastic episode, it sounded incredible! I really enjoyed this one. Cheers.
I saw simon with deep purple last year in germany. The entire band was great but he was definitely the star of the show for me
That’s the sound in my head! Right there! Superb.
Great player. Nice choice of tones, too! I still miss Steve Morse in DP and will forever do so.
Prefer Simon’s tone it’s perfect for DP 🎼🇬🇧
The real fans still need the founding father of the band.....not the subtitutes
By FAR my favorite episode EVER. I am 100% in accord with his live sound philosophy. Brilliant player and excellent interview.
Quatermass! Saw Simon and DP in Atlanta couple of years ago! Was great!
I reckon Simon is actually the best guitarist Purple has ever had. What a fantastic and versatile player. Thank you guys for a great interview.
Great show! Cheers Mick, Dan and Simon!!
Dan and Mick´s reactions to Simon´s cleaning and overdriving with just his PRS is priceless. Makes me re-think if we even need overdrive pedals
That was truly amazing. It demonstrates an incredible guitar, on its own.
Good morning, Im grateful for your content. I've learned a ton and love the music. Keep Jammin !!!!
One of the best guitarrists ever!!!!
Amazing show thanks . Cheers 🍻
If I could ever make more than one person shake their heads in amazement, a la 1:13:41, then I've done alright!!! Simon is such a great player. Been lucky enough to have seen his solo band live...even had my shred-buddy in awe!
Montreal , august 27 ; Simon had so many georgous PRS gtrs , it was like a NAMM-show PRS booth !!! Woahh , so inticing !!!
purely as a punter who likes to get "down the front", one of the weirdest experiences at a recent gig was seeing a well known metal band playing with a silent stage. I'm of a certain age and when I was a kid in the early 70's, Deep Purple Mach2 was it. It's very nice to know they're still keeping that flame going
Had no Idea who this was ... so effortless so articulate so enjoyable
Fabulous episode! 👍
Simon gave me my first proper guitar lesson about 25 years ago at his family home in County Antrim! I thought I was a decent enough player until I met Simon 😩 he was always destain for greatness ✌️
This was a lot of fun! Simon seems like such a cool guy to be around! Loved the sounds he got out of the gear!
One of my favorite guest along with Rabbea Massaad and Shawn Tubbs !
This is by far my favorite episode yet! Thank you for this!
This guy has it all...WOW!
Always awesome Simon... omg... so Ducking underrated guitarist...
Superb episode! I saw Mr McBride when he supported Joe Satriani on the Black Swans tour but his playing here is absolutely sublime - man those toanz! Congratulations on the Deep Purple gig! I am excited for an album of Deep Purple songs written by him, it will be magnificent.
Same
Saw him in montreal. Amazing fit. Band sounds so good with him.
