Wow, Brendon and Phil together, this is both wonderful, and discombobulating, two of the best channels on UA-cam uniting here, for people who appreciate an emotional response to their music and little silver spinning discs. Great also to see both recently on Sea of Tranquility.
While not a fan of Simon's solo albums I was excited to hear he was in the band because of his work in the Metal band Sweet Savage. His reworking of all the Vivian Campbell material was surprisingly good and you could tell he had the chops for DP. I was hoping over the last couple years they would do an album with Simon and was pleased to hear the new single out of the blue. Can't wait for the album and I will see them in July.

Great conversation. I'm really looking forward to the new album. I have to agree with Phil, the blues have ALWAYS been a part of the Deep Purple sound (Demon's Eye is a prime example) as well as all the jazz and classical elements. 🎸
I appreciate the different eras and musicians in Deep Purple, but taken as a whole, there is no debate that Ritchie Blackmore was the driving force and possibly the greatest rock guitarist of all time.
Hi Roland, there is always debate as music touches us in different ways. Ritchie is my favourite guitarist but is he the best of all time? Other might pick Page, EVH, Derek Trucks, Hendrix, Kossoff, John McLaughlin etc and all would be correct depending on how they feel about that particular musician. Blackmore was certainly the diving force in Purple in two distinct periods but Lord drove MK1 and Bolin and Morse were also at the wheel in their own periods. The different members of Deep Purple have sent me down various rabbit holes of discovery. Come Taste The Band introduced me to Tommy Bolin, which introduced me to Billy Cobham and Jazz Rock then Miles Davis. Steve Morse's solo albums sent me all over the place! True, Malmsteen is faster than Ritchie, Jan Akkerman is more versatile, but my feeling is that the intangibles that also go with what makes up the talents and image of a guitarist in that genre - feel, tone, stagecraft, etc.. - have formed my opinion since first seeing Ritchie live in 1972 and first hearing "In Rock" in 1970 and meeting Ritchie a few times in the late 70s - The Best, for me, and like yourself, my favorite.
Hi Roland, wow, you saw Purple in 1972. I was a bit later and saw them on the BURN tour. I had a chance to meet Ritchie in the 80s as he was in a club I was in sitting on his own. I was too nervous to go up to him! In Rock was the first album I ever bought. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Cool Phil, I did not hear about your pub appearance with Ritchie but I know all else you have presented here about your history with Purple. I am the bloke who was friends with Mark Forster, Sabbath's personnel director from 1975 until his passing in 1991. Mark knew Rainbow's management so that opened the door for some unique meetings. had lunch with Cozy and David Stone in 1978. etc... I still have Ritchie's chord from a guitar that sailed over my head as I was standing between the stage and the crowd. I need to email you some photos! stay tuned... thanks again for your dedication... real name Pat Renau Roland is middle name... back again

Great review guys. Been with Deep Purple right from the start, saw them live when "In Rock" was released. I am not all in on them, just cant afford it but their catalogue is second to none. Just streamed the new single and it sounds great - its Deep Purple after all. Don Airey - great keyboard player and has played with the best including Jethro Tull and Colosseum. Dont know the guitar player but he sounds great am sure it will work. Cheers Doug
Being a huge Blackmore fan I wasn't happy that they replaced him! However, I I had the chance to see them at The Barrowlands in Glasgow in 1996 with Steve Morse. As much as I was resistant, Steve was outstanding! The gig was musically amazing and the band were rejuvenated, but being the stubborn young 20 something I was staunchly still reluctant to accept the new lineup! Subsequent, I then dropped off from following them for several years only to return around the Now What?! album. After hearing that album I realised how absolutely amazing DP are with Steve Morse. After revisiting all the previous albums with Steve I then realised how absolutely amazing he was to DP music. Now I very much miss him in the band. It will probably take me time to warm to the next guitar slinger!
It seems to me the new guitarist gave the band new enthusiasm. I don't know that if Steve had not resigned they would have continued. This guitarist and keyboardist Don Airey brought in a new vision and here we go again!

Phil, this was excellent. I don't get much time to watch much YT at the moment, but I'm so glad I got in to watch this. I am genuinely super excited eagerly waiting for the new album to drop and this discussion has only heightened the excitement! Going to have to dig into Now what! , whoosh etc over the next few days.
Gillan sounds fab on the recently released Portable door, well they all do!
I seen an interview where Steve said he thought he would have been involved in some kind of involvement of the end whenever they plan on calling it quits.

Machine Head is one of the greatest rock records of all time. I love the 50th anniversary edition. Love hearing 2 versions of a great album. Made in Japan is one of the greatest live albums with excellent versions of the best songs from MH. Rock on!

When Steve got the call about things not going well for his wife, he was was in the middle of a writing session with Purple. I’m curious as to if any of that writing was kept for the new album.
Steve definitely breathed new life into the band which was pretty much a sinking ship back then. Purpendicular - what a great piece of work!

A good thing about the Joe Lynn Turner period was that they performed songs from the Burn and Stormbringer albums. He never had problems with singing songs from the Dio period either when he was in Rainbow.
I love Deep Purple this new song is amazing i love it. I am a fan of the band since 2017 and i think that this new album will be amazing nice video my friend take care.

Hehe...I first encountered Deep Purple as a 14 yo kid in 1972 when I heard the single "Never Before"...since then, they have been my number one band.
got known of dp in '78 with 12 years of age. was fascinated and still am. saw them (mk 2) for the first time in '85 during their perfect strangers tour here in vienna/austria.

People miss out on so much good music being stuck in an era.
I have the same views on Vinnie Moore in UFO as you've both voiced about Steve Morse in Deep Purple - and, for the record, I love all of the "eras" of Deep Purple right up to the present day anyway.
But we all know that Michael Schenker had his "on-stage problems" too and if you ask people to give a definitive UFO line-up, 99.9% of the time that line up would include Schenker on guitar (myself included).
With that said, I saw UFO far more times with Vinnie Moore than I did with Michael Schenker (or Paul Chapman) and they were always the better band with Vinnie - there was always a good interplay on stage, the band always looked like they were having fun too and you always got a good and professional concert from them.
So, yes, I don't think a lot of later line ups of long-lived bands get the credit that they often deserve - you could probably say the same about Uriah Heep too.
Steve once said that he might not have been the first guitarist in Purple but he really wanted to be the last. I do think Simon's sound suits the band better, is cleaner, more defined, and he is a great performer, very much owning the stage when he plays. So looking forward to the new album release.

I was fortunate to see Purple in'73 again in the mid '70s with Hughes,Coverdale and Bolin and then I saw them a few years ago with Priest and they blew Priest right out the door.All three times I saw them were awesome.
I know DP from all the way from Rod Evans. I'm really enjoying Morse Era. Perpendicular is my favorite Morse Era album. I don't get why they're not playing that Era live. I'm seeing them in Sept in NY. Disappointing if they dont play at least a few of those songs.

The new single "Portable Door" is a respectable song. It has done quite well with 1,1 million views here on UA-cam alone.

The 'Turning To Crime' album should have been made up of mostly Mark I, Mark III, Mark IV covers along with outside tracks such as Mac's 'Oh Well'. Mandrake Root, Kentucky Woman, Emmaretta, Why Didn't Rosemary, Bird Has Flown, Sail Away, Mistreated, High Ball Shooter, The Gypsy, Love Child are all songs that Gillan can sing as a Elder Cunning Linguist.
Here in the North America for the most part, deep purple, are virtual unknowns, they are never mentioned in the same breath as Zepplin sabbath Aerosmith the who any of those great bands from that era they seem to be forgotten or dismissed.. any top 10 - 25 and
sometimes 50 polls of rock bands they are rarely mentioned and if they are their way down on the list for some bizarre reason.
I agree that they should have played a few gigs only with songs of Steve Morse era!
Brendon, MK 3 guys Hughes and Coverdale they have done those songs out there for years . Gillan doesn’t like to sing those songs as “ he would not do justice and are not on his register@ but you have to understand that they have a lot of repertoire to cover.

For a look back at the career of Simon McBride , I would highly recommend you investigate the album " Second Skin " by Snakecharmer , featuring the twin guitar assault by Simon and ex Wishbone Ash , guitar slinger , Laurie Wisefield ( who himself is fabulous ) as well as bassist extraordinaire Neil Murray ( Whitesnake ) , keyboards by Adam Wakeman and vocals by Chris Oeusey and drummer Harry James ( Thunder ) .Excellent rock album that didn't get all of the acclaim it deserved .Based on Simon;s work here , I'd say that DP has themselves a winner v
Great show guys!! Playing live Mark 3, 4 or 5 material live, I don't see it happening. I believe Gillan won't give in on this. However, no one would stop the band to have a sort of rock overture with riffs and passages from post-Gillan Purple songs, or even Simon throwing in some riffs during his solo. Pleeeassseeee!!!

Back in the early seventies, the bands were supposed to develop their music, they got criticized if they made the same album twice. I myself remember that I didn’t like A day at the races, because it was too similar to A night at the opera, for example. This is also the reason why the album Who do we think we are was considered to be an inferior album, it was too similar to the Machine Head album.
This is the reason why the Fireball album is very different to the In Rock album. It was what it was supposed ro be back then and it was a lot of talk about development and a feeling that the music didn’t evolve fast enough.
Nowadays, it’s completely different, people seems to not want to hear bands changing things in their music.
i started to buy albums around -72 and the first albums I bought was all the CCR albums. They are all very different to each other, so to me, very early on, I learned that was what I was to expect. The first track I heard with DP was Lazy from Made in Japan. The first studio album I bought with them was Who do we think we are. The second was The Book of Talisyn. All very different to each other, and that was something I had learned to expect. It was nothing strange with that. That’s also why I was disappointed when I heard an album that sounded the same as the previous one.
I remember an interview with Ken Hensley in a swedish newspaper and all he was talking about was that the music had to evolve and change and band members had to go because they didn’t want to change. That was the sign of the time.
I'm almost certain I saw Simon McBride on a TV talent show here in Ireland in the mid 90s. I think he played a Joe Satriani tune....
Deep Purple has always been a great band, no matter who’s in the band. I’ve been a great fan for many, many years. Got into the band when Burn came out, and have seen the Band live about 30 times. I have seen them with 4 different guitarists, 2 different vocalists and 2 different keyboard players. The best gig I’ve seen with them was in fact with Joe Satriani on Guitar. They are always good live tough, no matter what line up. The only thing I’m a little bit annoyed about ,is their not very adventurous set list. It’s always sad seeing youngsters waiting for Burn, Stormbringer, Child in time etc. and have to tell them that this incarnation of the band doesn’t play them.
Purple is better with McBride , no doubt , yet Ritchie was and still is #1 ! His ego could not take the ego of Gillian… Saw them last year , wonderful …. !
Is there something wrong with Rock Music when the best two albums thus far are by Judas Priest and Hawkwind . We are talking about a New Deep Purple Album and AC DC have just started a new world tour ?.
There are lots of great rock bands out there. The trouble is it is so much harder to get heard and discovered. The touring landscape is changing as is the music business but I am confident Rock Music will survive. Phil
We all like what we like, that's all one can say. I struggle with wanting to follow new bands because I've been into rock music for more than half a century with it being one of my main hobbies - including live gigs.
The problem now is that I have heard so much music over the years that any new band that comes along always reminds me of something that I've heard before - and then I just go play that band I heard before and forget about the new stuff.
I entirely happy with youngsters today following new bands and hopefully turning them into their Deep Purples or Led Zeppelins - but I am also a bit of a "music snob" and I would struggle to engage with a new band that are young enough to be my own kids anyway.
Yes, that's on me completely, but I have more than enough music from my own timeline to still go and explore, and I am "happy as a pig in wossit" being "left to my own devices" in doing so.
The singer discussion point really sux - the singer is part of a group. Bruce Dickinson always sang Paul Di'Anno's stuff and then sang Blaze's - all no problem - it really must be ego's for Gillan and Halford. All the Rainbow singers sang the previous material happily and respectfully.
I hope they stop with covers and throwing those rock and roll nuggets in their albums .
