I was raised listening to recordings of opera and as much as I love to listen to it, if the singers are good, I am not an expert and do not know all the terms and how to apply them. A few but not many. I simply know good when I hear it, even on a 78rpm. I only ever managed ged to go to amateur performances at Wimbledon Theatre. There was one performance with John Hanson in the lead, but what stood out was a bass in the choir who had difficulty trying to keep his voice down. I wished I could hear more of him. He was very good, above amateur quality. Alas, as a working class girl I couldn't travel to hear the best, then I became too discontent with amateur performances and later settled into marriage and raising family. So I know recordings are going to be all I ever have, and am very grateful we have them. I don't think much of today's voices. Not their fault if they are trained wrongly and pressured into doing things which harm their voices and performances, as it is their only living and they wouldn't obtain roles if they didn't. Still I believe the old voices superior.
