ohh my godness, why didn't i found this channel before. thanks bro and sis. i searched the whole yt but didn't find any channel which could satisfy me. Thanks a lot for clearing my confusion.
Extremely informative, especially when it comes to using can in terms of general possibilities. This topic had bothered me in the past. I remember when it all started with the following sentence: "Answer the phone, it might be Tom." - why on earth not in the following way: "Answer the phone, it can be Tom." Now I know: the sentence is a great example of a very specific possibility.
Part one: Possibility in present or future 0:34; Part two: General and specific possibility 3:58; Part three: Possibility in the past 7:55; Part four: Past possibility - could have 9:59
@@huyenngoc7214 Could có thể dùng cho 2 trường hợp khả năng trong quá khứ: 1. mình biết là nó xảy ra như nào và 2. mình chỉ đoán chứ việc đó nhưng thực tế không biết rõ nó đã xảy ra như vậy k. nên em thấy cái ví dụ thứ 2 đó là trường hợp không biết nó xảy ra thực sự vậy không, ng nói đoán là khả năng anh ấy đã trễ tàu.
The only thing I would distinguish is that "could" and "might" might have different meanings - for example, "They could be brothers; they look so alike!" (they COULD be, but I know they aren't) or "They might be brothers; they look so alike!" (I think they really might be).
Could is also the past tense of semi-modal 'can'. I could speak French when I was little. I can't do that now. It's about ability and in this case 'could' is used as a past version of 'can'. It's obviously for students but not generally, I think it would have been better if the lesson had had the explanation from this point of view. All in English depends on context, especially the meaning of modal verbs. But It's still the best explanation ever!
Thanks for the comment, and it's a good point, but in my experience, students get confused when you talk about modal verbs having past forms. 'Could' can be a past tense of 'can', but only in specific situations. I think it's better to focus on the meaning you're trying to express and choose the appropriate modal verb, but different perspectives can work for different people :)
it takes 2 mos for me ..how to use the (could, migth, should, would, have+past participle) past possibilities..in the past correctly ..infact lot of learners always get confused about them. aND LOT OF VEDEOS WHICH TALKING ONLY ABOUT THE UNREAL SITWATION AND THEY NOT INCLUDED THE POSSIBILITIES. therefore as we want to use them possibilites in the past which. we can confused constantly. coz we only just know the unreal situation .and not the possibilities. I WANT TO SAY .WHICH TO ALL LEARNERS, THAT DON'T STOP TRIYING TO TEACH OURSELVES IN ENGLISH. NO ONE ELSE COULD HELP US. BUT ONLY OURSELVES . THANK U FOR THIS VEDEO. ITS BEEN 2MOS SINCE I BEGAN STUDIYING ENGLISH .BY MYSELF. ..FROM ZERO TO INTERMIDIATE.
