When to use GERUND (ing) and TO infinitive (to) 😎
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 чер 2024
- This lesson will focus on something that is usually quite tricky for language learners, of any level. I’m talking about verb patterns, the fact that when 2 verbs appear together in a sentence the second one of them normally suffers a transformation. Today we will practise using verbs followed by GERUND and verbs followed by To-INFINITIVE.
These verb patterns will be divided, explained and practised in three main group:
00:00 Introduction
02:58 1) Some verbs are followed only by gerund (ing), some verbs are followed only by to-infinitive.
05:15 2) Some verbs can be followed either by gerund or infinitive without any change in meaning.
08:14 3) Some verbs can be followed by either gerund or infinitive with big changes in meaning.
Watch our lesson, clear up your doubts, test yourself completing the sentences that we’ve prepared for you with the right verb pattern and, the most important thing, practise and practise as much as possible in your everyday conversation.
Continue practising ⬇️

I've something else to add to your wonderful lesson of gerund and infinitive.
Gerund can be used in a lot of situations:
1) After prepositions and conjunctions like : of, about, with, before, off, up, out, after, into, in, down, on, between, and, while, when, upon, for, to, etc...
Example: I saw my former teacher when driving home.
2) after Some expressions: spend time, have trouble, have difficulty, it is no use, it is no worth, it is no good, it is out of question, feel like, etc ..
Example: I spend most of my time reading books.
3) After possessive adjectives: my, your, our, their, his, her.
Example: My wife dislikes my smoking inside the house.
4) Gerund can be used enumerating different things and can be at the beginning of a sentence to play the role of subject.
Examples:
1- The new programs of the committee are :
-Creating job opportunities for everyone,
-putting in place a team which can control trashes,
- helping needy people out with bags of rice.
2) living in an English speaking country can be helpful for any non-native speaker of English.
Bunch of thanks!
As for me that lesson was complete, if you want to listen to the whole lection about gerund and infinitive you can find plenty of other videos on youtube but in this video she tells exactly what I was looking for and that unfortunately is not mentioned in other videos
I think Infinitives and Gerunds apply when it's a verb followed by a verb as she explained and not when there are conjunctions between the verbs
Can you add me for your lesson
The teacher has covered Your examples which included two verbs in one sentence.
Thank you for adding very useful information about gerunds and infinitives. It’s really helpful for advanced learners. However, this easy to follow and simple video is more handy for the lower level learners like me.
It has to be said that was an excellent presentation. Extremely well edited and very well presented well done.
Thanks :) Glad you liked it
I agree with you❤

Is number 2 correct?
No 1 is also a specific action
I think you made a mistake in number 2
Used to listening to other teachers' channels the random algorithms led me to you. I got impressed by your explanations, now we can face successfully the chance of using either gerund or infinity. Thanks.
Wow, thanks! :)

Yes. You are right . Where are you from ?
Very good summary of these intricate rules for non native speakers. There is another instance which could be worth mentioning also: the case of phrasal verbs, always followed by a gerund: for instance looking forward to doing something, being used to doing something etc... but it's easier here!
The way you teach and the gestures you pose are amazing! ❤️
Thanks 😊
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Your videos is pleasant and the most thorough I have ever watched about this topic! You have made me your follower.

Hi Laura. Thank you for your lessons, its make my English learning so enjoyable!
Can I ask some question...
Is there any difference in nuance between these sentences below?
"I like to dance." and "I like dancing."
Does the former (TO infinitive) one imply any particular preference about the action?
Also, "It started to rain." and "It started raining."
Please, thank you.
Hi Tom! 🙋🏻♀️ Thanks for your interest in our lessons 🤗 Regarding your questions, when using verbs like LOVE, LIKE, DISLIKE & HATE both options (to & - ing) can be used with the verb that follows. I would say that the "- ing" option sounds a bit more natural to me when talking about an idea in general. Nevertheless, both possibilities are correct. The verb START can take both too 😉
I hope this answer helps 👍🏻
@@EnglishwithLinguivers Thank you for your explanation! I can understand now.

So
Hi! How's it going?
I had never seen someone explaining about the 'like to' and 'hate to' when it refers to a specific
situations. It's interesting.
Is it really a general rule that is followed by most people?
In fact, it's not a general rule that makes one option correct & the other one incorrect. Both options can be used (I like getting up early, I like to get up early). It is true however, that this pattern appears quite often.
You are the best teacher Laura
Excellent!!!
Laura you're amazing!!!!! Thank you for this video
Thanks to you for being such a great learner! ☺️
Hey Laura. Thank you for this great video. Can you give us more verbs followed by Gerund or Infinitive? Btw, I remember meeting you for the first time )

"English is so weird" That's not fair coming from a Portuguese speaker hahahaha
This is the first time I listen to your lesson. Honestly you're perfect.
Thanks Ahmed 😘
Your methods are so easy to understand. Thank you.
Hello! In all my English books and dictionaries the verb dislike is followed by a gerund, but you said it could be followed by either gerund or infinitive.
Hi Alex! You're totally right. It's quite rare to find the verb "dislike" followed by TO-infinitive. I should have used "don't like" instead. Apologies 🙂.
Thank you! I had the same question.
I like your lesson but 1 thing: “I need study.” is correct when NEED is a modal verb.
Your sentence is correct already by using need as modal helping verb , however we call a semi modal helping verb since it can be also a main verb
Love this coach,,, spokes so clear!
Excellent!
thank you so much , GOD bless you
Thx for your excellent production and sharing...
Really you're wonderful teacher.
