Tom Petty is one of the all time greats. His nasally voice fits his music perfectly.
Subjective opinion passed off as fact.
RIP Tom Petty
@@nealm6764 ?
I could not agree more, Tom is an all time great and died way too soon. Show some respect people!
@@nealm6764 All opinion is subjective by its very nature - and that's a fact.
When this song was out I had been living like a refugee ...Crashing at different friends moving all over the place...I heard this and decided I needed to do something with my life so I joined the Army.
Thanks for your service brother. - Former 11B
I understand. When his song "I Won't Back Down" came out I felt like I was actually standing up at the gates of hell, and when things were at their worst I sang that song and reminded myself to stand my ground and to keep this world from dragging me down. It helped me weather whichever adversity was thrown at me.
NAVY for me, but the same situation for me. My brother -in-arms ❤️
@@victorcoburn2791 Navy for me too, but same situation.
She's a refugee from love; she's running from love because of her bad experiences.
I think he is telling her.... he will not attend her pity party!
You nailed it Winston! R I P TOM 😢 That's Tom's unmistakable voice....some like it ...some dont.
@@ronwilliams6565 I love it! Tom Petty was a legend.
Brad nailed the meaning on this one. Lex got that impression DOWN though. The whole Tom Petty catalogue is like a slice of quintessential Americana for me. Just encapsulates young, working/middle class life. Was lucky enough to catch him live once about 40 years ago. Personal faves by him are You Wreck Me, or I Need To Know. Great uptempo tracks✌️
Tom was a member of the group the Travelling Wilburys, which also included fellow music legends Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Roy Orbison. Talk about a super group !!!
They don't make music artists like that anymore.
Maybe one of these days they will play one by traveling wilbury's
My Favorite Super Group!! Huge Talent and all just very Humble!!! LOVED Them!! ❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯 Sad that We Couldn't have had More of them!! 😭😭😭
@@haroldsockey6987 One can only hope! End Of The Line would be a good place to start. You hear that, Brad ! Lex ?
From the first time I ever heard 'Breakdown' as a teenager, I've been a Tom Petty fan. There's so much amazing music in his catalogue, you could get lost in it for days. Enjoy the deep dive into this incredible musician's work. You'll be a fan for life, too. Guaranteed.
Breakdown is one of my favorites. such a groove
yeah breakdown is my favorite song from him
Love love love Tom Petty. One of the most Magical lyricists ever. Plus his buddy Mike Campbell ain’t shabby either! 💗
Absolutely!
Brad & Lex, his "Here Comes My Girl", "American Girl" and "I Won't Back Down" are next for you!!! Refugee is from his outstanding album 'Damn The Torpedos' .
Here comes my girl is 🔥 but so, so many great songs. Been listening to a lot of his "non-hits" lately and dude just made some seriously good music.
Tom Wrote a song for Stevie Nick's called Stop Dragging my heart around. One of his best songs 🎵
He also sang it with her.
I'm drawn between the song being a Stevie Nicks' song, or a Heartbreakers song, feat. Stevie Nick. I'm leaning towards a Heartbreakers song because even though Stevie delivers it, the base sound of it is that band.
they did that one
Got to see them perform it in his hometown of Gainesville in ‘81.
he did not write it for her she just ended up with it haha.
Didn't get into Petty until "Running Down A Dream"
"I Won't Back Down"
"Free Fallin'" but remember as kid hearing "Refugee" on the car radio.
His music gets heavily rotated n my player. RIP Tom🌌
🤘💀✌
Don't Do Me Like That is my favorite song of his.
..Im liked "American Girl"...I think Tom Petty is one of those guys that would have done it all for free , a true Rocker R.I.P. T.P
I will say that this is one of those songs where Tom Petty really dialed-up the "Tom Petty-ness" of the vocals. But even when he was holding back a little, he still had a super-distinctive voice!
Tom deserves his own genre... and be the Goat of his own genre... good reaction, thumbs up, more please?
I've always called it Heartland Rock, pretty much the same genre as Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. True Americana.
Tom was amazing, RIP Dear Sir
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were so good in concert. To get a feel, check out the live version of "breakdown" it'll give you chills
I was ten or eleven when this album dropped and I spent the next year listening to it nonstop. I got to see them in concert later that year and it changed my life. They were so good.
1979 was a great year in Music, Top selling album in the US, were Supertramp - Breakfast In America, followed by Donna Summer Bad Girls. Then we had the Dobie Brother's Minute By Minute, we also had Pat Benatar's debut In The Heat of the Night, and Damn The Torpedoes by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
We were SO lucky to experience the FM radio years!!!
I’m 26 years old, but I kind of grew up around classic rock. I had never been a big Tom Petty fan though. Then I went to Bonnaroo 2018. It was less than a year since his passing, so a group of musicians performing at the festival got together for the “Tom Petty Superjam”. This included Sheryl Crow, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Matt Schultz of Cage the Elephant, and countless more. They played a bunch of Tom Petty songs, and I fell in love with his music. I will admit I was on a bit of LSD that night, but I haven’t enjoyed his music any less since that night. I’ll never forget getting that joint passed to me during “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. R.I.P. Tom Petty. I wish I had loved your music earlier, but I’m glad I love it now
I remember when this song was released... so different. Just blew me away. I think Brad nailed the meaning/intent.
That was just his voice. That's how he sounds on all his songs. That's what makes him so cool. He's different and you know it's Tom Petty when you hear him. He has lots of good songs! Do "American Girl" next!
This group never would go away. They just kept getting better and better. This is an iconic band.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers had a 40-year recording career. Plus his solo stuff, his work with Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys, and guest appearances on other people's albums. There's a LOT to choose from, and his musical style is pretty varied. It's a deep rabbit hole. My all-time favourite artist. This song was from their third album, which propelled them to stardom. For something different from this but really great, try something from the other end of his career - like Fault Lines, from their last album.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have some great ones - he has one of those original voices, like a true rock-n-roll voice. I always liked, "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl" and "The Waiting is the Hardest Part". His songs have been featured in movies like The Silence of the Lambs ("American Girl") and Jerry McGuire ("Free Falling"). Love your reactions!
So many good tom petty songs to react to. Refugee is my 2nd favorite tom petty song next to breakdown. "Runnin' down a dream" "I wont back down" "Dont come around here no more" "The waiting" "You got lucky" "Into the great wide open" "Yer so bad". So many bangers.
Running down a dream and Wont back down are MUST petty songs
The song that made me a life long Tom Petty fan. 1979 a year I'll never forget.
Tom Petty is a LEGEND! He's got a huge library of great music! Rip Tom Petty!
Tom Pettys from Gainesville Florida, that’s the twang! Awesome singer, songwriter. Tons of great songs!
I love the way Tom sings this hard rocking song. One of my favorites from Tom and the Heartbreakers. I think he’s singing about someone who feels beaten down, and he’s saying you don’t have to BE beaten down. “Everybody’s had to fight to be free”.
Tom Petty like all the greats, he stands alone in his style. He does his own thing, you can always recognize his work, yet every song is different.
His/their first hit song….his voice is just his style…that’s his voice…he sings like the everyday man…from his heart….with soul!
I saw him in 1985….fantastic show!
BEST Tom Petty song of all time! I remember when this song was released.. I was just a kid and we all dug it!! Big time! Such a nostalgic tune for me. :) loved your reaction! Lol esp to his voice 😋.
RIP Tom Petty🙏🏼
Running Down A Dream is one you must listen to.
or breakdown or here comes my girl or the waiting
LOVE IT WHEN LEX WEARS HER 'MOUSE EARS'! And when she doesn't too!
Lucky Brad!!!
His lyrics were meant to be taken in whatever way it fit your world......that's the beauty of his gift for song writing. And his voice....the timber of it for me is magical, touches my soul.
Great reaction! A Petty song that often gets overlooked is "A Woman In Love".
And it is one his best, imho!
Absolutely it does one of his best
Definitely one of the best to really show the uniqueness of his voice and his ability to convey emotion in his singing.
Petty's best recording!
@@davidadams7989 ,I agree. That's why I was surprised when I bought a "best of" CD a few years back without that song included. The song is at the top of my list.
HUGE hit for Tom Petty! This song and album shot him to the top. Takes me back to when this song came out....it was all over rock radio!
This was Petty’s first big hit on commercial radio!
This is the song that introduced me to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. It’s still one of my favorites.
One of my favs by Petty is "Dont Come Round Here No More".
Yes that's how he sings - with slight variations over the years, but always with a little muddle "Bob Dylan" like sound in his voice.
Other greats: "Here Comes My Girl" "Even the Losers" "Break Down" "You Got Lucky" That was his older bag.
Then "Learning to Fly" " You Don't Know How It Feels" "Won't Back Down" and "You Wreck Me" were in his later years.
You CAN NOT go wrong with Tom Petty🔥🔥one of the 🐐
My first concert ever was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers! Summer of 1985.
You my friend should play the lottery. Where I come from (London) you are known as a lucky so and so
The album was Southern Accents and I bought a T-Shirt for it.. It had a Confederate flag on it!
Saw that tour. The band Lone Justice opened for them in Tampa and the unannounced addition to the line up was Roger McGuinn from The Birds. He did an acoustic set.
i remember seeing you there what a night.
@@markvanderstelt8999 lol. What city?
I grew up listening to Tom. Many of the songs he wrote were love songs. Raw and emotional. I played A Woman in Love, off his Hard promises album for my junior humanities class, and the music teacher clearly had no appreciation for his talent.
I had a friend in high school who was obsessed with Tom Petty, well him and Bruce Springsteen. I always found him more hit and miss. But there is something about this song I really like. I think it is the singing style that makes it so good.
Tom Petty was a great fan of Bob Dylan, as were many musicians that he influenced from the 1960s onwards. Dylan led the field with the Beatles and the Stones. This is Tom in best Dylan "feline " voice. That Dylan sneer comes across well here on this track and the guitar /organ sound is pure 1960s Dylan. Dylan was to take Tom and the whole band on tour as his backing band later on . They became friends and later formed the Travelling Wilburys with Roy Orbison and Beatle George Harrison...also a long-time Dylan friend. This was a fun project for them all.Three of the members are sadly gone leaving only Dylan ploughing his very unique , ever -changing furrow.
This was the song that got me to listen to Tom Petty and it is still my favorite Tom Petty song.
Same
You guys will never go wrong listening to Tom Petty lol, this man has written hundreds of great songs.
Tom Petty, a mainstay in rock music. Also check out You Got Lucky, Mary. Jane's Last Dance, Runnin Down a Dream, American Girl, The Waiting, Don't Come Around Here No More, I Won't Back Down, and Learning to Fly
I am so Happy to have seen his concert live about 6 times in my life. Was Always a great show
This song was my introduction to Petty. The way he sings it with such conviction, hooked me. Then again, what did I know, I was just a child in the backseat of my mom's car. This is still my favorite Tom Petty song & I don't think that will ever change. RIP Tom
Tom Petty " Won't Back Down", "American Girl" and "You Wreck Me" would be my choices for next up
The song that made most of Us Tom Petty fans… check out :” Break down” by Him . And … YES! Brad Nailed it!
He's talking about depression. Listen to Free Fallin, Won't Back Down, Last Dance with Mary Jane. Petty is one of the greatest.
Keep listening, I'm surprised you didn't catch his southern roots. He's the real OG to a lot of us. RIP❤Tom
His first hit song from 1979 and in my opinion, the best song Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers ever wrote and recorded. That's saying a lot, because they had a ton of great albums and songs over 4 decades.
Thanks
Wildflower album...amazing...tom petty...no words
"Breakdown" is maybe my favorite Tom Petty song. "Free Falling" is also a must.
...those keyboard sounds = SOUL
I think Brad's onto it. You don't have to
"abandon" love because of a previous experience. There's a great song by the group YES called 'Love Will Find a Way' and the next line is "if you want it to...." Very deep. Love this song. Lots of swag.
Brad nailed it. It's Tom Petty listen to his words and it will take you on this incredible journey as he makes all theses hit songs there is no bad song in his catalog.
Tom was a huge Bob Dylan fan, too..so there's that influence
I think this was the song that made me a fan of Tom Petty. Not long after came The Waiting, Woman In Love, and Something Big on the 1981 album Hard Promises.
TP has a one of a kind voice..it's just the way he sounds. He was from Fla., very laid back.. Nasal twang. Love his music so much!
"That's his swag." Brad nailed it. Tom's unique. Also, you got the meaning right, IMHO.
Tom Petty a Florida Gator! Check out Won't Back Down. Then check the Florida Gators Crowd Tribute to him when he died. Give you chills!!
Tom Petty is a legend! I heard that he had passed away (someone correct me if I am wrong).Respect to all musicians. It takes a lot of talent to do what they do.
Brad!!👍🏽👏🏽😁
Lex keep listening, plethora of opts!!
Great song, love this classic!! ❤👍🏽
Missing Tom, RIP. 😪
I love him so much. Was lucky enough to see him live.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are good for the soul. This is the song that got me into listening to Tom and the Heartbreakers. Still my favorite song of theirs. Great reaction. Other great songs of theirs Mary Janes Last Dance, Good to be King, Listen to her Heart and I Should Have Known It.
RIP Tom! Don't Come round Here Anymore, Runnin' Down A Dream, Won't Back Down are a few other hits. Good song. Lex, cracking me up again.
This song came out when my cousin was missing and kidnapped by a neighbor for money. I’ve loved Tom petty and we actually listened to him together, was one of our favorites. It took me decades to be able to listen to this. It’s been 42 years now, love you Bobbi Sue
One of my favorite musicians and my biggest regret not having seen him in stage.
Tom was one of a kind.
Try American Girl or Listen to her heart.
I remember first hearing him in the 70s but he really blew up in the 80s. In fact, he's one of those artists that I can safely say helped to make the 80s. Some of his videos were also some of the best in the 80s - "Great Wide Open" with Johnny Depp in it! "Running Down a Dream" with that trippy pencil-style animation! "Don't Come Around Here No More" with the Alice in Wonderland theme! MUST - DO - MORE - PETTY! :D
This was the first song that I took to my guitar teacher and he wasn't too happy about it because he was a classical player, lol.Tom Petty had so many great song's and hits, hasn't been too long since he passed away and I miss him and his music.🎶🎵
This is my fav Tom Petty song. Love the words and the melody.
Saw Tom Petty several times. His concerts were "themed fun parks". One concert had a huge tree on stage and he was dressed like the Mad Hatter. (Alice in Wonderland)
the whole album (Damn the Torpedoes) is great
Top 50 album of all time for sure imo. No bad songs.
Every Petty album is a masterpiece
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 fair enough
Saw him in concert back in 79-80and my favorite song was"Here Comes My Girl". He was great in concert was slammed against a wooden barrier in the front and couldn't move the entire time.
Oh this is such a great song! I love Tom Petty. Back in the 90s I was nearly kicked out of his concert because I had a backpack full of jello shooters! One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen! He always seemed to be just so cool and laid back. I believe with my whole heart that Tom helped welcome Taylor Hawkins into Rock Heaven Friday night. I’ll believe that always. RIP to Tom and Taylor.
As I recall, "Don't Do Me Like That" was the first song on the radio by Petty, but it came and went quickly. Then this song came out and got a ton of play, which revived interest in the previous song. And that pushed this album ("Damn the Torpedoes"), and the rest is history.
This was the song that introduced me to Tom Petty. I've been a huge fan ever since.
“Woman in Love”, “The Waiting” and “You Got Lucky” official music videos are pretty awesome
Wildflowers is a top 20 album for me. Tom Petty was an incredible poet.
"It's Good To Be King" absolute Gem from Tom Petty love the solo
You get me high, You wreck me, The waiting, Listen to her heart, Room at the top, Have love will travel...his work with The Traveling Wilburys. Literally dozens of songs were hits or should have been, and only a handful of musicians can say that
Saw TP a few years ago with Steve Winwood as opening. A great artist and story teller.
Holy crap! Do ever wish I had gone to That concert!
@@SK-lk3iuwatch the greats while you can. I missed out on Pink Floyd amd Van Halen but was lucky enough to see Rolling Stones in Buffalo. The most recent sbow i saw was Tool. Fckn amazing.
Oh and go see Blues Traveler and Joe Bohnamasa.
I recently watched the live version of Saving Grace and was impressed with how sharp they still sounded at that age.
So many good songs from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. You will enjoy the journey.
Tom was a different cat. And I thought he was Uber cool. RIP bro…We’re still listening to your music. 🤘
Like adopting a rescue dog that flinches when you’re just trying to pet them. I’ve been on both sides of that.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are so unique. They sound like no one else. Tom Petty does have a kind of quirky voice but it fits this band perfectly. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
My long-time love for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers can be traced back to this song I remember it like yesterday I was 16 years old pulling up to the arcade when I first heard this song come on the radio and I sat mesmerised at what I was hearing I never heard anything like it before. I can only describe it as a watershed moment
Damn the Torpedoes, great album! Tom Petty was one of the GOAT. Awesome reaction as usual, you two are the best!! ✌️ 🎶🎼🎵🎸
It's truly depressing that I'll never get to see another Tom Petty concert again. But damn.....the ones that I did go to, were absolutely transcending!!!
Back in the 80s Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and George Harrison formed a band called Traveling Wilburys. You should listen to “Handle with Care”
Tom pettys unique voice and great songs, too many to mention, made him one of my favorite artists of all time. This is a great song but my personal favorite is Mary Jane's Last Dance.
For full understanding of Petty's willingness to push the envelope, they really need to see the video for that one.
Oh, that's definitely the way TP sounds!! haha. He's got a very unique nasal twang thing. Love him! Try 'Even the Losers' or 'American Girl'. he looms large in my list of favorite artists. Amazing talent. Sincerely missed!
I loved this song back in the day! Tom's voice is unique 👌
Tom Petty is one of those artists that I feel I ought to have got into earlier in my life. I remember being on holiday on the Isle of Skye in Scotland with my Dad and we played the album Full Moon Fever in the car. I thought it was great! Then just a few weeks after getting into Petty's music, news broke about his death and I was heartbroken. He seemed like such a great guy and very dedicated to his fans. He was also in the supergroup (that I also recommend) The Traveling Wilburys, alongside George Harrison from the Beatles, Jeff Lynn from ELO, plus Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. What a lineup!
Tom Petty is the king of good old fashion Rock and Roll. And Breakdown is short, sweet, and a masterpiece. If you can't groove to Breakdown your dead
Tom Petty's catalog is a massive list... of Banger after slapping Banger.. I personally think calling him legendary is a bit silly, simply because of the colossal understatement that it undoubtedly is... Tom we love you... You are and will continue to be missed for decades.....if not centuries to come... R.I.P..✌
The problem with trying to nail some musicians down, especially if they've been around for a while, is they tend to have eras. 80s Petty is different from 90s petty etc.
Oh wow! Brad freaking NAILED this one. Great job, Brad. You picked up what he was laying down.
