Tom Petty is, quite simply, one of the greatest American songwriters. And nobody else has ever sounded like him and the Heartbreakers. (Best played while rolling down the highway.)
I think you guys missed the last verse: "Free Falling" - he thought his life would be better without her - he'd have freedom from commitment / obligation - but without her - his life is actually in free fall. My own 2 cents. I'm glad you two did Tom Petty. A wonderful artist that I have grown more to like now than during his peak commercial years in the '80s. Thanks for your reactions.
Free to be self destructive is still free. Sometimes we leave the best things in the rear view but life is about making choices and living with yourself after. Great song.
I think you're right on and that's why the chorus is the way it is. Now I'm Free. Free Falling. He thought freedom was what he wanted but as the great Kris Kristofferson put it, "Freedom's just another word for nothin left to lose."
This song has a double meaning guys. The one meeting might be exactly what you guys are saying but a big meaning to this particular track is obviously women coming to la and chasing their dreams. They meet guys who promised them they can put them in the movies and this and that. Coming from Southern California and the places that he's talking about, I definitely can tell he's speaking a lot about vampires sucking the energy or aspirations out of these women who are coming to hopefully get famous. This is so close to things I've seen in my life within Hollywood area. I lived in studio City which is right on Ventura boulevard. So what you guys are saying is probably right but I'm pretty sure this is certainly about nice little innocent girls or women coming to la chasing their dreams to be actresses and then there's vampires, lying men, that suck the life out of them by promising I can do this for you or I can do that for you and so on. Most definitely is metaphorical of pretty much what we see going on in Hollywood with all these things like Harvey Weinstein and aspiring actresses. I used to see this all the freaking time. I knew this one man that would literally go to the Hollywood Greyhound bus station and wait to pick up young ladies who come out chasing a dream. He'd feed him a line of BS and take advantage of them for a while and then leave them be. I'm not very old now but I was a teenager in seeing these things because I had family in the business
He’s free but there’s a touch of melancholy in it. He’ll remember her, but he’s moving on into wide open spaces. It’s less about him playing her, then he’s a fringe character, she’s the good girl and they’ll never fit. She fell for him, drawn to the bad boy type, but he’s not the suburban, white picket fence guy and has to walk away.
This is one of those songs where the music video actually DOES help convey the meaning. Come to think of it, Most Tom Petty songs were pretty good with their official MTV music videos.
I agree with your ideas, but I think that there is another piece to the emotional backdrop of this song -- the way he describes her love for him in the first verse: She's a good girl, loves her mama Loves Jesus and America, too She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis Loves horses and her boyfriend, too I think he feels that her love for him is superficial and not very genuine or deep. The lyric structure draws a parallel between her love for him and her love for America, something society expects her to do (love America, have a boyfriend). It implies that she loves horses more than she does him. To me, the song has an almost wistful vibe, I think it's possible that he entered into the relationship in good faith, but was disappointed by the lack of intensity, and left. So now they are both singing different flavours of the blues. I think he is happy to be free of the relationship, but sad that it was not what he was hoping for.
Tom petty has soo many good hits., refuge, breakdown, i wont back down, yer so bad, running down a dream, here comes my girl, mars janes last dance, into the great wide open and more
Sometimes the sounds and the words paint a picture that evoke a particular feeling without having to actually mean anything. This is one of the songs I just let wash over me without thinking too much about it. And I love watching Lex just enjoy the music!
When the world was out of their minds, there was Tom Petty, He was a retreat for people who wanted to get away from B.S. Tom Petty would come on radio and we would just relax. His music took us to nice and different places mentally. RIP The Peaceful Rock Star Stop Jamming me was the haters we tried to escape, Tom made a song about them being the people who they are and just leave us be.
The lyrics deal with Los Angeles culture, mentioning actual places in the area: Reseda, Mulholland and Ventura Boulevard. It implies that the people of LA will casually use others for personal gain, as the singer has just dumped a girl and doesn't even miss her. Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida and moved to LA with The Heartbreakers in 1974. His outsider perspective came in handy in this song.
naaaah, not "anti-LA" at all....its about self-denial. You scream for your "freedom", but you're actually in free-fall and you dont even know it. Lotta that goin' around in this country at the moment.😕😕😕
I think Brad got this one. He seemed to tune in to the song. Still love lex's smile when she likes a song and starts vibing to it. You guys are just fun to watch. A great song by Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks is "Insider". Check it out. I think you'll like it. Great channel.
Tom's discography is FULL of hits. Full Moon Fever album was pure gold but I remember MTV Petty was always a good time too so it goes back and continued to have amazing songs. Some of his newer songs don't get enough airplay in my opinion like Saving Grace or Last time your gonna hurt me! Greatness RIP TP - I also feel sorry for the band he kept together so long. Doing those videos in his own studio/gallery of guitars you can see how much fun these guys had together and how absolutely in sync they were! So missed...
I saw Tom Petty in his final tour a few years ago before he passed. He puts on a great show. You sit there and realize every song he played was a mega hit. He seemed so humble and so happy the sold out crowd was having a great time
I'd have to say my 2 favorite Petty albums at the moment are last dj and echo, to me, there really isn't a bad song that tom and the boys did. I got to see Tom and the boys 2 months before Tom passed up in Seattle and it was amazing. My one and only petty concert.
I got to see Tom Petty once with the Black Crows, really good show even though I had field seats and it rained the entire time. I do really miss Tom Petty R.I.P
"Don't Come Around Here No More" is probably my favorite Tom Petty song... it has a *very* interesting history, too. Professor of Rock made a video fairly recently about the history of that song. Pretty wild. I love the chill of this song, too.
I was working for a small family business in 1990. The older son was singing this song loud. He thought it was Free Balling. Everytime I hear this song I remember that.

Heard an interview with Tom Petty when he told the story of playing those first few chords while chatting with Jeff Lynne (ELO) ... JL asked him to play the chords again and improvised the words "she's a good girl" ... JL said "Free Fallin'" theye wrote the song and the rest, as they say, is history :) ... Late to the party watching your reactions guys, loving them all and Lex's smile just makes my day ... Would love to hear your thoughts on "Black Cow" by Steely Dan
Tom Petty always had a way with words! His lyrics are so very His, no one else sounded like him. And The Heartbreakers always kept it grooving! Even his slower songs are catchy and keeps one moving. Thanks for sharing! 😽💋🎶

Good Lord, Tom Petty….🥲😍Love Love Tom!!! Soooo much good music and vivid storytelling. Def take a deep dive into his catalogue please. You won’t be sorry.
Jeff Lynne co-wrote (and produced) the song, and it was Jeff who named it. Jeff told Tom to sing, "I'm free falling!", as the chorus, but Tom couldn't do it all in one breath. So Jeff told him to split it up as: "I'm free! [breathe] Free falling!" So when analyzing the song, don't focus on the lyrical line, "I'm free!", because it was never meant to be in the lyrics as a stand-alone phrase/feeling. No, the song is primarily about his feelings of guilt, and regrets, and the accompanying feeling that he's, "free falling". Great song, one of Petty's best. But make no mistake, the song would not exist as we know it were it not for the mind of Jeff Lynne.
What’s amazing about this song is that Jeff Lynne from Electric Light Orchestra is one of the producers and he is doing background singing on this one. He does play the instruments as well.
It's a three chord song. Even the solo is still the same 3 chord progression. It's cool that he was able to do so much with such a minimal palette to work with.
"Won't Back Down," "Don't Come Around Here No More," and "Learning to Fly" are all amazing songs by Tom Petty. He also did a performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Prince and a bunch of other talented musicians I highly recommend.
I think this song may be my favorite song EVER, it’s definitely my favorite Tom Petty song, but yeah I think it just might be my all time favorite song from any musician.

May high-school days getting high , teen exploring and hardly coming home for days working restaurant jobs ...must note I was a very different black teen coming out the getto and had no one from my community who listened to what I did. Not till the service did I have friends who liked rock ...all my friends where white that knew my music ....believe me they where shocked
Love the look on Brad's face when he said you can't win with women. Feel your pain. Just like when you ask them what is wrong and they say nothing.....😂
During Mass the Sunday after, I was surprised when our Priest named Tom Petty among the list of persons who'd passed away. I later found out that he was a huge Tom Petty fan. Quite appropriate and justified. Millions loved Tom for his honesty and his virtuosity in music.
She has 'structure' in her life and he stepped away from any + all commitments. He regrets it but keeps telling himself he is free. Great insight, and thoughtful lyrics. One of his best.
you nailed it, Brad. In that moment of clarity... the free fall of realization. Lex, boys make mistakes, just like girls.. and boys are capable of genuine remorse. xo
My first exposure to Petty back in 1987-88 I think that was. Elvis Costello, Mike and the machines, George Harrison, Steve winwood, Paul McCartney were of the same vibe.

1989 this song represents an end of an era to me ; The LA music scene. The golden bear night club was closed in 1986. Opened in 1929. One of the most historic and best venues in California. Just tookTopanga canyon to the coast. Right on PCH feet from the sand
Well this is eerie, was just listening to this song while working out and wondered if y'all had done a reaction vid to it. Come to check and here it is lol.
Top 5 artist for me, prolly top 3. Love Tom..so, so, so many great songs. Gone too soon! The most mellow, easy listening guitars around. So he broke up with her but its a two way street. He's free...but he's also free falling, lost and in a spiral.
I always interpreted this song as taking a leap of faith(free falling). Breaking from your perfect conventional life with the all american girl and pursuing your dreams and a sense of adventure etc.
The song is a double edge that its some one with freedom but also free falling as they reached the top of their pinacle in life and now there in free fall
Its kind of interesting when i first started watching them Brad didn't seem to grasp a lot of the songs very well, but as they have continued to watch he is getting better and better at it. There have been a couple of the newer reactions where it seemed like he really got it.
Petty explained in an interview with Billboard magazine that he and Jeff Lynne were sitting around trying to come up with a song, and Lynne got him to say "free falling". The next day they recorded the song. Petty did not write the song about a specific person, but instead about what he saw during his frequent drives along Ventura Boulevard
Tom Petty is, quite simply, one of the greatest American songwriters. And nobody else has ever sounded like him and the Heartbreakers. (Best played while rolling down the highway.)
Absolutely!!! So many memories 💯
He really is
Also this song was produced by Jeff Lynne of ELO and Travelling Wilburys fame.
Facts.
Absolutely in the Top 5 at the least!
RIP- Tom Petty. Can't say anymore than that. Rock on Brad & Lex
He definitely was Unique and is Missed! 😢
My dad and I used to listen to his music on the way home from school, I miss those times so much…
Yes RIP to Tom and his bassist Howie Epstein, who died in 2003.
@@kimlalajo Absolutely, RIP- Howie Epstein. I'll take your word.
Man I forgot he died 😢
“I Won’t Back Down” is a classic anthem by Petty…his catalogue of music is astounding…from Florida as well….
My FAV Petty song! ❤️💯
My favorite.
Yep; and they now play it at all the Florida Gator games after "We Are the Boys" at the beginning of the 4th quarter!
True but they made it out of Cali. They knew they had to get out of Gainesville and move to L.A. if they were going to make it, so they did.

One of the greatest and most underrated song writers. Tom Petty was a master story teller

This is a wonderful song 🎵 . Take’s me back to the 80s

Tom cruise plays this song in the car in the movie called The Firm.

Its a classic.
"Ship of sorrow." I like that phrase.
The song is a double edge that its some one with freedom but also free falling as they reached the top of their pinacle in life and now there in free fall
The only artist I can listen too for hours on end and sing to every song
