Notes... Nut is 17mm spanner / If it is slipping 2L is not a drama. / DO NOT GET ATF FLUID ON THE ALTERNATOR. = replacing alternator $51 and trip to pick a part / (put rag under pipe while filling) / cut top off a 1.25 litre drink bottle and rest it on top of the battery. Cheers for that mate 👍😁 saved me some dollars. I did everything you did except for the syringe, I stuck a drinking straw inside the bottle and sealed it with bluetak and just squeezed the bottle straight into it 👍 Thanks again
My car was literally slipping gears after I tried changing my gearbox oil filter and putting new gearbox oil back into the drain plug, saw this video and it literally fixed everything, thank you!
Just want to thankyou for making this vid mate. I'm one of those guys that rounded the 16mm filler plug cos it just wouldn't budge and I was spewing cos I'd already removed and drained the trans pan before cracking the filler plug....Doh! I didn't have a syringe but i was able to use a short piece of 1/4" fuel hose clamped over the end of the trans line and the other end clamped onto the trans fluid pump nozzle. Had to go very slowly but it did the job. Thanks again mate. Your a life/ money saver.
I watched this video 6 years ago and recalled it yesterday when I topped up my EL 😅 I recon I must’ve gotten the same super cheap auto syringe aswell 😅 took like 5 min to top it up
Today my son and I installed a new radiator ($150) on my 2002 BA Falcon 6. It has 186,000 km. A couple of months ago I could smell oil burning which was caused by either engine oil or transmission oil leaking onto the exhaust system. There seemed to be several things fail simultaneously. Firstly the top radiator house split 4 weeks ago, losing all the coolant. I replaced the hose and refilled the radiator with the correct amount of coolant. I noticed a light brown sludge in the old hose and some brown froth in the fill reservoir. I shrugged and just drove it for a couple of weeks. About 2 weeks ago I was in heavy traffic and the auto trans intermittently lost drive from a stop (the motor revved but car no go). I took it to my son (a mechanic) a few days later and he diagnosed a cracked transmission cooler in the radiator guts which was causing the transmission oil to mix with engine coolant thus causing the coolant to look like a cappuccino with brown froth. He drained the cooling system and flushed the radiator and then put a couple of litres of fluid in the transmission via the filler plug. This was a temporary measure until I bought the radiator and a radiator bottom hose.. The car ran fine then we replaced the radiator today. The coolant was drained before removing the old radiator. The engine coolant again looked like a chocolate milkshake as more transmission fluid had mixed. We flushed the cooling system several times with clean water, installed the new radiator, then installed the new bottom hose. We put new coolant in (about 10 litres) then topped up the transmission. Everything seemed fine but I knew I needed to take the car to an auto trans mechanic so the fluid can be completely drained, flushed, replaced with new fluid and any filters cleaned and inspected for leaks with seals replaced if required. After a 60 km trip and in heavy traffic today, the transmission was acting up again with intermittent severe slippage when in drive from a standstill. It worked better in manual mode but I need to get it fixed ASAP. I tell you this story because my son says it is a common problem with the BA 6's, subsequent models with high mileage models such as the BF and some earlier models with the integrated engine and transmission cooler. He also said that that there is always a reason for loss of transmission fluid and while pouring more in may solve a problem temporarily, in the long term the cause must be fixed. There are a couple of other points he made. If the oil filler bung is removed without the engine being on and fluid is added via this hole, it will flow back out prematurely and insufficient oil will be added. The engine must be running with the transmission in neutral so that fluid is being pumped through the transmission, thus lowering the fluid level. Then by adding fluid until it starts to dribble from the hole, the correct amount of fluid will be in the transmission. Another point is the transmission oil pressure far exceeds radiator pressure so the fluid is pumped into the coolant when the engine is running if there is a crack in the internal radiator tubes. The transmission fluid gets hotter than the engine coolant so that is how heat transfer takes place. If it were the other way round, the engine coolant would be heating the transmission fluid which would be silly. With respect to cracked internal passages in the transmission cooing section of the radiator, when the engine stops, the transmission fluid pressure returns to zero but the engine coolant is still hot and under pressure. Then coolant can flow from the radiator back to the transmission. This is why I'd be skeptical about just topping up the fluid for a longer term as the auto trans may be have a shit load of water in it or it may have none. That is why I'm taking it to a transmission specialist to drain, flush and inspect. I am hoping that water in the transmission hasn't done damage. I would say sure, top up lost transmission fluid to get the car back on the road but look for a reason for the loss. Another potential problem is the source of the oil leak that I could smell over 6 months. I noticed a few small patches on my driveway and it didn't smell like ATF. My wife is making noises about getting rid of this car but, like my son, i like keeping cars until they can no longer be kept on the road economically. I'm thinking of a low km FG XR6 turbo. BTW, we fill the transmission with a long rubber tube and funnel via the bung hole on the transmission.. You can also use a tube attached to the metal pipe that bolts to the radiator in conjunction with a funnel, but while you know how much you are putting in, you can't tell if is enough or too much. What I described above is the correct Ford service technique for adding fluid to the transmission. My son works for a power company servicing their large fleet of cars, trucks and machinery. He is a qualified mechanic and an authorised vehicle inspector for diesel trucks, buses and passenger vehicles. A large part of their fleet was BA falcon utes and cars. I trust his knowledge and advice. He can't service the transmission at home as he doesn't have the facilities nor the time. I hate crawling under cars these days as my back is stuffed.
Thanks a lot for this video. I had the same symptom this morning and i had to move the car off the road to the curb, then i got home and google issue and car and saw this vid. Anyway, I've spent about $52 AUD for the syringe and 4 litres of Castrol TQ 95 oil, and I've 'topped up' about 1 litre for now, might add some more this weekend, so far so good!!!
Thank you so much. I had it happen to me today when I was driving, and I thought my trans was buggered, I am hoping that it is just low fluid.. You made my life a bit easier after seeing this..
Just jack the right side of car up get your spanner and open filler hole, pump in oil until it over flows transmission takes approx. 7 litres of oil if its not shifting pump in 2 to 3 litres, overfilling is impossible as under workshop requirements you have to overfill until it spills out. Remember to start car and go through gears and again pump in more until flowing out of side. empty/dry the transmission takes 9 litres after a rebuild and re install
No it's not as the the transmission on the falcon is designed that once fluid flows out of filler hole on level ground it's actually at the full mark so you pop the filler bolt back in .They designed the transmission so it can only take required fluid. But when you fill it the first time and it flows out place filler bolt back in but don't tension it put the in drive then reverse this will pump fluid through trannie. Then switch car off and again fill until it flows out of hole then seal and tension bolt and your done
Absolute legend, jacked up the front of my ute, droped fluid and topped up. Because it was on an angle when I topped it up was still low. Solved my problems, thanks heaps
Thanks for making this bud. My 97 Concorde was locking in 3rd when I took it out the shed after a year, turns out it had a slow leak in the gearbox which got worse and worse. By doing this I can put the car back on a truck to Adelaide from Darwin then when I have time do a proper flush as I doubt the poor thing has ever had a proper trans flush!
I just wanted to add my experience after watching this video - Awesome BTW. If I can get another 6 months out of my car - fantastic. My AU2 2000 falcon was slipping when cold, around corners etc. I Bought this syringe from Bursons. It Takes 80ml. 80 x 12 = 960ml (40ml short of 1 litre) I also bought 4 litres of Dextron 3 or Dexron 3 compatible Auto Transmission Oil. I rang the manufacturer of the oil and they said any Dexron 3 compatible oil will go in this transmission. (Somewhere it mentioned it had to be Transmax tq85.) The Spanner to remove the pipe is 17mm (being right handed and the configuration of the electrical leads etc, it was easier to stand to the side of the car and use my right hand to undo it and re tighten it as well.) Time without phone call 15 minutes. The extension that comes with the syringe is very short but for now as I was only taking 1 litre off the top it was fine for now. Subsequent top ups will need a longer tube or to decant it into another container to suck it up. If I remember I will post how long before it needed to be topped up again. The tube fell off the syringe into the bottle right at the end and the Trans fluid made the rubber of the syringe sieze in the syringe half way through when I took a phone call. I was able to free it up but in a weeks time it might not be so forgiving. I might pull it right out and clean off the fluid from the piston of the syringe. I took some advice from a mate. When you get that low on a car that is slipping after checking with a normal dip stick you would normally put in 500ml to 1 litre. My mate said if it is that low you the sump pan holds 2 - 3 litres. I didn;t feel safe putting in any more than 1 litre but it was way more than the 250ml that was quoted in the video. Yet again thanks to grutnip for posting this. It is good Aussie common sense at play. What do you mean Ford didn't put in a filler tube? You just have to unscrew it first. My car is back to changing gears again after my test drive and I am relieved. When I had my trans checked 3 months ago he told me that this was possible that Fords have a problem with the back seal. Also that it will cost quite a bit to fix it.
Thanks gruntip. My 99 AU started to slip after driven for some distance and while accelerating or going up hill. I think it was trying to change down. We're staying back of Gold Coast a distance from home, Woody Point, Redcliffe. We bought all we needed from Supercheap Narang, including the syringe, and just did the deed. Apart from being out in the sun, all went well. Put in 400ml. If it hasn't fixed it I'll do it again. Will do a fluid change and filter when I get home. Thanks again. I didn't fancy getting under the car when away from home. Mark.
Those red ignition leads are the originals, I'd be changing those while at it. I did the coil pack and leads, a bit hard to get to, but on a car of that age it needs replacing.
Did the top up in my EL yesterday but it still launches itself back to 2nd randomly on the drive home, I’m starting to wonder if it’s computer related as I loose the manual selector aswell and if I turn the key off it drops back to 3rd gear (both solenoids off I think) till I turn it on and it goes back into 4th, then tries to grab 2nd again 😅
I took your idea and ran with it ( no giant syringe).... 1ltr penrite bottle has pull out spout but orifice is to big. So I pushed a silicon nozzle on , chopped it few times and voila.
This does work temporarily this is a good fix if you need to buy ur self time but the transmission will still end up slipping after time but good video👌 If you haven’t striped it yet vvv Also note if the fill plug is to tight you can fit a 16 mil hex but not a 12 point (as it’s easier to round off!) And get a breaker bar it will give you better leverage and fits this ensures you that you will not strip the bolt, it can be over tightend don’t over tighten them just snug and little bit torque is good enough.
G';day...I have a 2001 Series 2...Over recent months despite not 'slipping' I noticed a definite clunk often as it changed up or down especially when cold...wasn't too bad but I got it serviced at the local Caltex...and the mechanic changed to the full spec Ford transmission fluid ...My car is not big kilometres ..only 161,000 but this was the original transmission fluid.. the results were amazing...I also have a BA fairmont Ghia and that transmission is silky smooth...Guess what ...The AU Now matches it..Just a transmission service and a 4.5 litre addition costing $55...and it's like a new car...Even though some say there's no need to change fluid unless it's a heavy towing vehicle (mine isn't)...it still must wear out and affect the gearbox operation over time...$55 every 160,000 kms isn't too bad if you ask me...Cheers Rod..
Be careful undoing the pipe because you can damage it. If you have trouble taking out the pipe, you can cut it and join up with transmission fluid flexible hose and clamps which you can buy from Repco and other auto parts shops. It is easier to drain and fill up the transmission fluid through this flexible hose. If you drop the transmission pan and change the filter you will need to fill it up with about 4 litres of new fluid.
No because you might overfill the transmission. You need to know how much to put in. If you just drop the pan and change the filter then you know for sure that the amount to fill up to the right level is 4-5 l.
Sosefo Inoke ok, thank you. I will have a look. I don't have much clue about cars though. I changed the radiator and have seen total black oil leaking out of the bottom pipe, all gears are working, just smacking in very loud sometimes. So I thought maybe I should fill it up or flush it. Or maybe I should leave it all like it is not to cause any problems. I heard it could come to blockage with new oil Sorry for my bad english ;)
motor here looks very similar to the territory, could this be the same? D sign flashes while driving so I'm thinking it could be low transmission fluid or maybe something else?
i have a 2004 ba ford falconbeen whiring went to drive today i started it put it into deive where it immediately satarted displaying the r for reversewhere i tuned the car off and it would not engage just makes a clicking sound then under the bonnet and then the disply for the transmission stopped displaying anything
does anyone experience a "whir" sound at high speeds or around 40km atleast? suspect it might need transmission fluid change and filter replace or possibly wheel bearing. but if anyone had this sort of experience and would know possible symptoms would be great. sometimes when starting it, it takes 5 seconds and may need accelerator at times
Thanks for the video. I have a AU series 2 auto falcon. While driving yesterday I noticed the area around the gear lever felt very warm to touch. it was a cold cloudy day so it wasn't from sunlight or anything. Could this be from low transmission fluid? Using your method, should I fill until overflow? Should engine be cold? Cheers.
Thanks a lot mate. Just did the same for my AU falcon today since its been leaking for a while and slipping and shitty take off seem to be resolved for now :)
Hi. My cars low on fluid. Not shifting as u described.. loosened off the filler and fluid came out. Does the car need to be running for me to fill via the plug
@@criddaobrien9208 if it's under filled you can add. If you fill not enough it is still under filled and then you can add. But not too much then it will be over filled and then no problem like under filled but won't be under filled but will be over filled. If still not over filled you can fill more to be not more than over filled but under filled. If then over filled will be different. Do you have a dipstick? Otherwise NFI give it a bit it is a 2k car send it.
@@grutnip hahaha what? It's a 8k car for starters and no dip stick or I wouldn't be looking it up. And it's not that hard to get the filler plug out don't use a shifter or the wrong size and u won't round it off.
You're a legend for posting this. I'm having the issue of slipping when cornering (as others here seem to have as well) and will try this on the weekend. Are these lines still the same when you have a transmission cooler?
bloody informative video - just bought an AU today and doesent have a dipstick - im gonna check it and as far as i know some hand fisted muppet hasent rounded it off yet
***** Yeah it seems dumb. Apparently the gearbox doesn't take ATF, and putting ATF in it will toast it. So they took the dipstick away to stop people just tipping ATF in there when it gets low.
grutnip That's ridiculous :(. It's the owners responsibility to ensure they have the correct fluid for the vehicle. That said actually check, I checked my fluid in the box the other day for my trans and it was TQ95 or whatever they call it and I see in the forums so many saying don't use Dexron yet when I was talking to super dear about changing fluids etc they quoted dexron3 despite the fact I gave them the exact year model and actual model (EF""2"""). So had I not paid attention it could have end in tears, thus proving if people don't know wtf their car uses they should pay for regular services from a reliable mech or learn (it's not hard to learn that basic step). Easy enough to learn that I'm the first computer tech I know of to do 90% of maintenance and repairs (bearings, tie rod ends, exhaust, rocker gaskets and more) and only a couple of years ago my limit was changing the oil+filter for the motor and changing the brake pads at the front and priming the brakes. Given my current challenges due to ill health (have troubles learning now) if I can learn then most of the basic shit isn't too hard. Anyway looks like I'm ranting now :(.
This really bad advice. The reason they removed the dipstick was to stop people overfilling. These transmission are really sensitive to the fluid level. This method is almost certain to result with under or over filling with subsequent damage to the transmission. If you have a rounded of plug use a Irwin Bolt Grip (from Bunnings etc) and breaker bar to remove it and buy a new plug from Supercheap, Repco etc.
I decided to take the risk of using this method ...simply because I have been working on my XR6 for the past 4 weeks and the thought of getting under it again almost bings me to tears lol...I didnt do up the pipe tight enough did I? I noticed the leak halfway through a 50km drive in middle of nowhere and had absolutely no tools on me...by the time I got home I was pretty conviced my transmission cooler will now need a new transmission aswell ...hahahah ...FML. ;)
I just watched your video on refilling the transmission, you should have asked yourself why did the transmission lose oil!!! and then go about it the right way by draining and changing your transmission filter, oil fluid and gaskets underneath the car. Your transmission oil and filter should be changed according to manufacturers specifications
You're freaking awesome mate 👍👍.... Like you said not worth spending much on these cars... But if it can keep it going another 12 months.. it's a bonus...
Thanks for the Video mate. If you can add fluid with one hand. I should be able to manage with 2 Only Australians would know what a Hand twisted Muppet is. 🚘
This is genius I have been trying to get bolt out for a week and this fix it in five minutes

Done the same but I have to rev the motor and let it go back to idle before it goes into gear . what is the problem.

Those red ignition leads are the originals, I'd be changing those while at it. I did the coil pack and leads, a bit hard to get to, but on a car of that age it needs replacing.
Great way for people who know nothing about these sealed transmissions to over fill and do more damage.
Mate, you're a Bloody Legend.
Cheers.
Thanks for the tip fixed my ute , I used a sauce bottle to fill it. Fixed thanks mate!
the FG Falcon is the same but takes Mercon 5 Syntheric transmission oil . Its the same fill procedure bit it takes 6 litres after pan re install.
many thanks. added 250ml and slipping disappeared. will wait to see how long 250 ml will keep it going before slip starts again.
Your an absolute legend mate i hope you know
Knowing how much to put in with out over filling is the trick
Where was the pipe running from? The cool lint?
I have a Ford Territory Au. Same problem with transmission fluid. Any ideas how to top it up.
EXCELLENT lateral thinking....thanks mate.
bottom hose just came off mine thanx mate il try filling trans up your way
I took your idea and ran with it ( no giant syringe).... 1ltr penrite bottle has pull out spout but orifice is to big. So I pushed a silicon nozzle on , chopped it few times and voila.
This does work temporarily this is a good fix if you need to buy ur self time but the transmission will still end up slipping after time but good video👌
If you haven’t striped it yet vvv
Also note if the fill plug is to tight you can fit a 16 mil hex but not a 12 point (as it’s easier to round off!) And get a breaker bar it will give you better leverage and fits this ensures you that you will not strip the bolt, it can be over tightend don’t over tighten them just snug and little bit torque is good enough.
Cheers mate. The mrs is over the moon😀 happy wife happy life lol
I have just the issue with mine when she is cold ,,,,,,,,,,What can happen if you over fill it ?
hey guys I cannot undo the nut to fill transmission any help
Same deal it's bloody hard to get off.... Don't want to round nut off
Dam just had a look at my Ford territory doesn’t have those lines spewing
Can low trans coolant cause issue s with starting etc with car not thinking it's in park cos gearbox is shaggin out ??
Is this the same for the EF 4 speed transmission
Yeah man
you're awesome mate, save my life and my pocket.........good on ya
Be careful undoing the pipe because you can damage it. If you have trouble taking out the pipe, you can cut it and join up with transmission fluid flexible hose and clamps which you can buy from Repco and other auto parts shops. It is easier to drain and fill up the transmission fluid through this flexible hose. If you drop the transmission pan and change the filter you will need to fill it up with about 4 litres of new fluid.
Can you just fill it up until it comes out of the pipe?
Sosefo Inoke i wish i saw your comment yesterday as i did fuck it and it wasn't very hard to do.
motor here looks very similar to the territory, could this be the same? D sign flashes while driving so I'm thinking it could be low transmission fluid or maybe something else?
Your Video was a great help. thanks
would this work on a 2007 lpg bf2?
i have a 2004 ba ford falconbeen whiring went to drive today i started it put it into deive where it immediately satarted displaying the r for reversewhere i tuned the car off and it would not engage just makes a clicking sound then under the bonnet and then the disply for the transmission stopped displaying anything
Thanks mate , this video is soooo helpful . have a good one .
Can you do this with a ford falcon xr6 2008
BF 2007 4 speed are different can't find out where to fill
9 liters it holds
does anyone experience a "whir" sound at high speeds or around 40km atleast? suspect it might need transmission fluid change and filter replace or possibly wheel bearing. but if anyone had this sort of experience and would know possible symptoms would be great. sometimes when starting it, it takes 5 seconds and may need accelerator at times
Ever fix the issue?
does the series 3 au have one - picking up one tommorow
no
Will a 2005 ba xr6t have this?
Thanks for the video. I have a AU series 2 auto falcon. While driving yesterday I noticed the area around the gear lever felt very warm to touch. it was a cold cloudy day so it wasn't from sunlight or anything. Could this be from low transmission fluid? Using your method, should I fill until overflow? Should engine be cold? Cheers.
trans should be slipping before it gets hot. unlikely.
i have the series 1 auxr8 auto.. sounds like i have the same problem.. gonna give this a go.
Thanks a lot mate. Just did the same for my AU falcon today since its been leaking for a while and slipping and shitty take off seem to be resolved for now :)
Just what I was looking for, sweet
Is this the same method for a ba 2004??
yes, it is the same, actually the tank can take up to 5.8 L TQ95
Hi. My cars low on fluid. Not shifting as u described.. loosened off the filler and fluid came out. Does the car need to be running for me to fill via the plug
Does not need to be running. Only a bit of fluid should come out the top hose. Significant amount is some other problem.
Fucking genius. Great tip. Thanks mate
how did you take it off without twisting the pipe. I was told you need two spanners.
Jon Killings the pipe is jammed between the nut and the radiator. should only twist a bit.
Definitely two spanners as some are tight
Good way if required otherwise it’s up on the hoist effective if emergency top up required simple effective cheers for video
1 ment to be warm and running 2 hor the F do u know u haven't over filled it?
That’s is sad I can’t find that hose
Just ask a mechanic if not sure he can point it out for you
Where did you get that funnel from?
I’m need help please
Question when you pump the transmission fluid throw the cooler line.Where dose it enter once it goes i it n the gearbox.
Back to case my guess
@@tigerstripes3926 it does tried it
Yup thought soo
You're a legend for posting this. I'm having the issue of slipping when cornering (as others here seem to have as well) and will try this on the weekend. Are these lines still the same when you have a transmission cooler?
those lines are the tx cooler in the radiator. if you have an external cooler it may or may not be different.
Does anybody know the correct procedure for a 6sp manual ford falcon bf xr6 turbo
what about if it takes abit to get in to reverse 1999 falcon xr8
cobra
Good chance you need an auto service. The filter might be blocked and its taking a while to get oil pressure to engage gears.
Chur bro thanks heaps very good and handy video
How to know the quantity?
You don't.
bloody informative video - just bought an AU today and doesent have a dipstick - im gonna check it and as far as i know some hand fisted muppet hasent rounded it off yet
ok kool bro, I am running with this thanx mate
radar hanna I ended up putting 1L in and completely solved it. 250mL fixed it most of the time.
Do u gotta keep car running
Dam just when I was considering upgrading the EF2 to BF/2 I see some stupid shit like no dipstick. /sigh
***** Yeah it seems dumb. Apparently the gearbox doesn't take ATF, and putting ATF in it will toast it. So they took the dipstick away to stop people just tipping ATF in there when it gets low.
grutnip
That's ridiculous :(.
Then you get an easy out kit, Better to get a mechanic to do it. You can also service transmission still just pump oil in through speedo drive hole.
This also worked for me. I thought the tranny was toast but all good now. FYI to those not familiar with the accent... he said "Ham-fisted muppet"
does anybody know would this be the same for a BF mk2 aswell?
bfcalppacatiyvedoo
I also want to know if it's the same for BA XR8..?
Thanks.
I decided to take the risk of using this method ...simply because I have been working on my XR6 for the past 4 weeks and the thought of getting under it again almost bings me to tears lol...I didnt do up the pipe tight enough did I? I noticed the leak halfway through a 50km drive in middle of nowhere and had absolutely no tools on me...by the time I got home I was pretty conviced my transmission cooler will now need a new transmission aswell ...hahahah ...FML. ;)
I have all this plastic there
Legend!!
Thanks mate
Yes mate
Hey aren't those lines for your power steering fluid not gear box fluid
nope
The Power steering lines are under the radiator
thankyou dam fine idea
I brought one to top mine up
4 Litres
thanks
fat tip ;)
Fucking genius, thanks Cobba
neat idea
old school
Thanks Dude
love that accent mate!
This is not recommended
Great tip mate. Why did they make it such a pain in the ass to top it up, bastards. Cheers.
Because they want you to scrap the car when it has done 100,000 and buy another one!
Thanks for the Video mate. If you can add fluid with one hand. I should be able to manage with 2 Only Australians would know what a Hand twisted Muppet is. 🚘
TY.
