How to change a BMW diamond key battery. E46 E39 X3 X5 Z4

- #bmw #key #diy If you have a BMW diamond key and it’s not working anymore it will most likely be the battery.
A replacement key fob costs over £200 from a BMW dealership so why not replace the battery for significantly less.
This video shows you how to replace the battery on keys for the E46 E39 X3 X5 Z4 and other BMWs from the same time period.
Please check the battery contacts are the correct position, some have the contacts opposite each other and some are 90 degrees.
Here is a link for the 90 degrees battery. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Panasonic-...

The video that just keeps giving!! Thanks... got to do this tomorrow... both keys died.
Glad it helped you, let me know how you get on
Did you get it fixed?
Nicely done and concise. Good video quality.
Thank you, glad it helped
My key stopped open and lock the car a year ago, but there still was just enough power to use the emergency opening of the trunk (when the lock cylinder in the driver's door gave up). Even with a bad battery, it still charges a little bit every time you use it and that power can be enough for that emergency feature (for some reason THAT works, bot not the regular lock - why I don't know - perhaps a security feature, so you'll change the battery or key before it's totally gone).
Another thing I noticed, is that when the battery is almost completely dead - the RFID will not get enough power to activate the gear selector for automatic transmission (the display will not show P, D or R) and kick-down, top gear and reverse lights will not work. Sometimes the car won't even start att all. But after letting the key sit in the lock with ignition turned on a while, it usually wakes up. With a new battery - everything works perfectly again.
I used a CR2025 a while, waiting for the online orders of proper VL2020 batteries. Make sure to buy VL2020 with 90 degree connectors, so it will fit on the circuit board. Flexible (but strong) glue is easier to use than those super glues, I found out.
Glad you got your key working again!
Toothbrush charger-brilliant! I'd forgotten the fob has a rechargeable battery!
Hopefully your key just needs a charge up and you don’t need to replace the battery!
I wonder if my Samsung smartwatch wireless charger will do the trick? Leaving it on overnight 🤞
@@gilbertacosta7434 Did it work?
@Sega Genesis no unfortunately. Ordered a replacement battery and worked fine though, no reprogramming necessary.
@@gilbertacosta7434 I took from my car wireless phone charger and it is working! just tried it. After half an hour key was warm to the hand. Went out and it opened and closed my car couple times, but battery still needs replacement. But at least I know that wireless charger can be used just in case.
Thanks for the trick with wireless charger, I have used phone charger and my key worked for a couple of times more, it was properly charged, but I know that the battery is just really bad condition. Time for replacement and proper charge with my charger!
Glad the video helped you. At least it helped you out of a situation until you can get the battery replaced.
Thank you - was looking for this help!
No problem, glad it helped
So helpful! Thanks!
You are very welcome!
This video helps to solve a very bad engineering concept. How can you seal a battery that 100% will need replacement ? 😮
It does mean you don’t have to replace a key battery for approx. 10 years but then they expect you to pay a lot of money to replace the whole key at the dealership!
18 years sounds about right. My e46 from 2005 needs a new key fob battery too...
Your voice is very relaxing
Thank you I’ve not been told that before
Excellent 👌
Thank you! Glad it helped
Thank you 🙏
You’re welxome
Wow, never thought of trying the charger trick before replacing the battery. Will give it a go and let you all know.
It’s definitely worth trying although if the battery has never been changed, the chances are it will need replacing soon as they don’t last forever.
Did it work?
@@Zanov It works with standard phone charger. Try it.
Thank you
You’re welcome!
Brilliant
Thank you!
Great video. Thank you!
(absolutely ridiculous design by BMW)
Glad it helped!
I had to do this to one of mine, took me about 20mins.👍🏼
Can you do a vid on how to re programme the key to the car ....cool vid
I wish I could but I sold the car when my second child was born. Not very practical car with family of four. There will be lots of helpful videos on UA-cam to show you the reprogramming sequence. Hope you got it sorted
@@db192 Yes there are , sorted thank you, hope all is well with you and your family .
Is it possible just to swap the battery without the contacts as I don't have a soldering iron?
It’s not possible unfortunately. A cheap soldering iron is all you need, you can get them online for a similar price to the battery. It will still cost less than getting someone else to do it. Let me know how you get on.
Did you paint those rims yourself? If so what color? They look great.
Thanks, glad you like them, they are adamantium grey.
I recently bought a 2007 z4 and the previous owner said the key doesn't work. To which I thought it was a simple battery replacement. I opened it just like you did but it's missing the small plate looking base where the battery sits, it only has the metallic arc on top with a single solder point. For comparison, at 1:28 there's a small plate where the battery was sitting. Looks like the previous owner had no idea how to get the battery out and removed everything. I'm trying to get a new battery but I'm worried it won't work because it's missing the 'base' where the battery sits. Any thoughts? Thanks!
From what I can tell you are missing a contact between the circuit board and battery so you may need to buy another. Did you get it sorted?
The key should charge itself when you put the key in the ignition, you need to drive with both keys from time to time.
I’m guessing that after a number of years the battery won’t hold its charge as well anymore, I only had one key and it would lose charge overnight even though I was driving it everyday. This sorted the problem though!
I did everything on this video and changed the battery with the soldering iron, and it did not work. 😞 What could be the issue mate ? Great video though.
Fixed it by reprogramming the key !!
Any idea if a watch charger would work to juice up the battery
I’ve never tried but it’s worth a go. They use the same inductive charging so I don’t see why not.
I'm told a wireless iphone charger should do the trick, though I've not tested that myself
How long should one leave the key on the toothbrush charger?
Try it on there overnight, if you are still having issues then the battery will need replacing.
@@db192 I'm definitely going to have to replace my battery, thanks for the quick reply!
Just did this on my E39 key and... Nothing. 😂 Still dead. Exactly the same process as you but no luck. I've got a spare that also has a dead battery so I'll try replacing that too in case it's the fob at fault.
Hopefully the spare key works for you. At least you have done it once already so you will know what you’re doing second time around.
Those batteries on the ebay link you have given are the wrong ones, the contacts are in the wrong place, they are directly opposite one another, on the original they are offset at 90° as I just found out to my cost!
You are correct, I’ll amend that now. I have a spare I can send you if you would like?
@@db192 That's fine, mistakes happen.
@@goplanit sorry about that, thanks for pointing it out, I wouldn’t want everyone buying the wrong battery, I make these videos to save people money not waste it!
@@db192 👍
Did you buy an extra battery for use in another 18 years? 😌😋🤓
I do have 2 of them as I lost the first one and found it again after buying another one!
The engine can’t start, can it be because of the battery dead?
It could be the immobiliser if the battery in the key is completely gone. Try replacing it and hopefully it will help.
will the vl 2020 batteries fit a 2005 BMW z4?
Yes they will fit in all the diamond shaped keys including a 2005 Z4. Make sure you get the batteries with the contacts at 90 degrees to one another.
Are we 100% sure the battery in the description is correct?
Yes the link is correct
I think you can also use the ML2020 - also rechargeable, same voltage, same size, different chemistry so 45mAh rather than 20mAh.
Better to buy an OEM battery with the prongs from a BMW dealership parts store
Can this work on an X3 2008
Yes it works on all keys if they are this shape.
@@db192 thank you so much I will give it a try🙏🤞
Do i need to reprogram the key after changing the battery?
No need to reprogram it should start working again straight away.
If this works you are an absolute god. My garage told me that it needs a new key ordered every time.
HOLY FUCK YESSSSS!!!! YOU. ARE. A. GOD. Part was available from amazon for $13 with next day shipping. It was just as easy as the video looks, took me slightly longer than you to remove and replace with the soldering iron but I'm a major soldering noob. Took a little over 30 mins total. I'm floored! I've only had this car about 5 or 6 years and I've already had to replace the battery twice! I suppose that might mean that there this is something wrong with the car charging aspect of the key but I have no idea how to fix that and I assume it's way more expensive to do than $13. I'm so happy right now! Never shelling out for a new key again!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! You are truly fucking amazing. Love from Seattle, WA you just made someone so happy!
Update: after gluing it together the lock function stopped working despite it working whilst 'naked.' Which is very confusing and strange
However, reprogramming it fixed it immediately! To reprogram, insert key into ignition, turn one and only one notch forward, turn back, remove key, hold unlock button, while holding press lock button three times and then release unlock button. Boom, done. I am so fucking happy right now
You are very welcome and thank you for your very enthusiastic comments! Glad I could provide a solution and bring you that much joy with it! Love from UK
This is actually what is stated in the User Manual and the Haynes Manual - you need to buy a whole new key - but they would say that, wouldn't they :).
Thank you DB 192 for the video - superb :).
@@db192 unfortunately the glue I used the first time failed and after regluing it together the lock function doesn't work anymore 😭
Link to the batteries?
If you search VL2020 you should be able to find one online, I’ve added it in the description if you need it.
@@db192 damn bro. Awesome! Just subbed... I have the m54b25 one
@@m32mikestu nice thanks man. We have the same motor!
The link is for the wrong batteries. I just wasted my money!
@@goplanit but he updated the link though
I had to reprogram the key after changing the battery. I should’ve tried reprogramming first before changing the battery. This other video shows that step. ua-cam.com/video/WWrqrTvTMd0/v-deo.html
Was the battery out for a long time?
No, I use the same key every day. @@waitwhat-qg9bc
What a pain
Definitely a pain to replace but if it’s lasted the life of the car so far you won’t have to do it again for a few more years.
@@db192 mine been dead for 3 years been looking for this lol
Way to over complicate a simple key for battery swap bmw
The battery recharges every time you put it in the ignition, my one lasted 20 years before needing replacement. I think they hope you will go and buy a new key from them for a considerable price.
