Great video, i am new to video and watched Rode's technical video about this mic, and it was too technical. This video describes the meaning of the mic settings in more plain and understandable english. Thank you.
That's great to hear - thanks!! :)
1:48 bought a used videomic pro+ and one channel was quieter than the other. thought it was broken at first but figured id watch a setup video for the hell of it. saved me so much frustration thank you!
So great to hear - glad it helped :) :)
Thanks for this information Jason! Last Saturday I tried to record and was wondering why no audio was coming in. Turns out I got the Rode TRS to TRRS (SC7) as I wanted the coil version. I will test the camera tonight for audio. It is helpful!
Thanks - glad I could help :)
Doing this while I try set up mine for the best settings hahaha! Forgot what they all do. Thanks for the info
Glad to help Tom :)
Thanks! This video helped me fix the white noise issue. I was in auto shooting mode and had to change it to the movie mode to make it work. Rest is as shown in this video (the audio rec level was not showing up at first).
That's so great to hear - it's a great mic - happy shooting :)
Thanks for the help, I'm building my channel now, and this is valuable information.
No problem! Glad to help :) :)
A very good video, thanks ;-)

awesome video man! keep it up. This video answered all my questions.
Thank you so much Bret! :)
@@JasonRobertsVideo Hello, for travelling and food videos, what setttings are recommended if i may ask? Thank you
@@elonworld9253 depends on how loud you talk/(or shout haha) I would make use of the safety track feature: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html Then go and do some tests maybe in like a noisy cafe and quiet restaurant to get your best settings. Basically turn on the safety track and then adjust the microphone gain (+20,0, or -10)) depending on if its too quiet/loud
@@JasonRobertsVideo that's great, thank you Jason 😊
@@elonworld9253 You're welcome :)
Thanks very helpful 👍
Glad it helped!! :)
Hi Jason, excellent video, it was very helpful, thank you!

Great video
Thanks so much - hope it was helpful :)
really good video and well presented :)
Thanks so much - that means a lot :)
Fantastic video man c: I was literally about to post "if it isn't out of your price range you could totally make a video like this for the Sony A7S3" since I'm determined to buy it despite the eye watering cost. And then I check your channel and 3 days ago you did that XDDDDDD fml I laughed so hard. You got yourself a subscriber haha.
Thanks Kairu - glad my videos are helping :)
you don't get enough credit. please keep pushing. you are amazing
Thank you so much for those kind words, I really appreciate it.
Good video bro
Thanks :) :)
Thank yooooou!
You're welcome Daniela :)
💯💯💯 Awesome
Thankyou so much!! :)
Hi awesome video. What setting would you use as run and gun shooter trying to capture all the background noise and sounds of things around you please
Hi Waqar - thanks!! :) That's an interesting question, if the background noise is very quiet but you are also vlogging/talking to the mic close up then it might be hard to capture the quieter sounds without clipping the louder talking. You could set a higher gain/volume on the mic and camera to capture the background noise and sound but then you would have to make sure you speak more quietly into the microphone. You could also try and use the safety track feature for this - when editing you could use the quieter safety track channel when you speaking and then switch to the non-safety track (which will be louder) when you just want background noise.
Great video!
Thanks so much mountain man!! :)
ps. Mountain Man - this related vid might be of use as well: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html
This a great video Jason … I’d like to see a follow up to this video with you using this mic and then editing the footage in PPRO to see how you get such clean audio … I bought this same exact mic and feel like my Audio is not as clear …
Thanks so much Al - that's a great idea for what could be a useful video - I'll make that happen for you :)
Nice one brother!!
Thanks so much!! Appreciate that! :)
You might also find this one about the safety track feature helpful as well: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html
This was a great video and tutorial! I have just recently started making videos and bought a new Rode mic to replace my cheap starry mic. I film hunting videos and I am outside in all sorts of weather conditions. However, I don’t want to limit the low frequencies that the mic can pick up. Turkeys drum which is a very low frequency and I don’t want to risk that sound being blocked out. What settings do you recommend me using?
Hi Gage - thanks! For what you describe you would not want to turn on the high-pass filter on the microphone as that would cut out lower frequency sounds (e.g. turkey). You could also use the great safety track feature that I describe in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html
thanksss
No problem - you're welcome :) :)
Hey man, what do you think are the best setting to cover air conditioning noise, will getting the mic cover help more as well? Thank you
Hi , that's tricky but you best bet is to try and get the mic as close as possible to whoever's talking, next when you are editing add some EQ and reduce the lower frequencies to see if it helps and/or use some noise reduction in your software to try and reduce further - or see if you can turn the AC off when filming of course!!! :)
Hi! Sorry don’t understand ))) I have camera Sony a6400 and the sane microphone I am record video at home video, what settings better to used ? Thank you
Hi, I don't have a Sony a6400 so I don't know the exact settings that would be best. Try starting with safety track turned on (ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html) +20db gain and then try different camera settings - start with the lowest camera mic volume and go from there.
Thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial. Two questions: Would you say that this microphone is good for someone who knows zero about audio? Is it easy to figure out with some practice and trial and error? And how does it do in loud urban environments when vlogging or when interviewing someone outdoors where it’s noisy (i.e., street traffic, general city noises like construction sounds, etc.)
Thanks Robin :) The mic is very easy to use - it does have some advanced features like the safety track which if you turn it on require some extra editing steps (see my tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html ) As for background noise it will pick some up, I have used mine in windy conditions (with the extra deadcat which is the fluffy lookin thing) which helps with wind noise. I've also used it next to load oceans while vlogging. If you are in a noisy place there are 2 things you can do: get the mic as close as possible to the person talking and try to point the mic away from the sources of noise if possible. It is a shotgun style mic which picks up most of the sound the comes from where the mic is pointing towards. You can also add noise reduction in the editing but this sometimes makes the audio sound a little weird. The biggest tip is to get the mic closer to the person - you could also put the mic on a boom pole for interviews and have it just out of shot but close to the subject.
@@JasonRobertsVideo thanks for this detailed reply! This is very helpful. I’ve experienced that weird sounding audio thing, at times, when applying noise reduction in post, which is precisely what I hope to avoid. I will be sure to implement all your tips! Thanks again.
No worries Robin - good luck :)
I love this! Super informative, thanks a lot :) I'll definitely come back to your channel again. Could you just please speak a little bit more slowly 🙈
Thanks! - glad to be of help :)
its help me a lot thanks for it, but I need to know more. how to exactly set it with different types of conditions...love form India
Hi to you in India Avinash! :) That's a great idea for a follow-up video for me to do - thanks :)
I have a Sony A7III and its not turning on and off with the camera
Hey Jason! I don't know how to sync up the mic and camera to turn on and off at the same time. It was originally working and now it is not. If you could assist that would be super helpful!!
Hi - that sounds weird if it was working and now it's not! - double check the cables are inserted correctly and maybe try a different cable - also make sure you haven't changed any camera settings that might have affected it - and obviously that the mic battery is charged.
So what would be the best setting for festival/club settings with heavy bass?
Don't know I haven't used it in that situation but you will probably need to use EQ when you edit to even things out - also remember that if it's very very loud you might overload the physical mic itself. You may also want to use this: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html
Can some help when i should use 75 or 150 when using the high pass filter?
It really depends on where you are filming and how low frequency the noise is - you could also not use this feature and instead use an EQ filter in in your video editing software to do a similar thing
Been searching for microphones 2 days now. Actually, i don't know which one i even need.
Every time i come across whit shot gun mics, theres something that bothers me.
I guess it's going to be rode wireless pro.
But if i want to hold that camera myself every once in a while, then again shot gun mic.... gopro cameras are easy. Now that my sony mirrorless is arriving, confused as hell.
Hi! One question... I'm searching a microphone for recording conferences, but also for a visual podcast with 4-5 participants. My idea is to use the Videomic Pro with an extendable cable and stand it up with a short tripod, placing it in a small central table and people sitting in chairs around it, so the sound will come from multiple directions. Will it perform well enough in this situation?
Hi - the Video Mic Pro + is a shotgun mic which means it is best at recording sound from (roughly) directly in front of it so if the people are far apart or in a semi-circle it might not be the best fit for the job. You could do a test at home and move around the mic and see if it will sound ok for whatever the quality requirements are for the final vid.
Does this microphone have a different modes such as changing the way it records surrounding audio. For example, a directional mode where it focuses on the audio that the mic is pointed at, Or an ambient mode where it focuses on all the surrounding audio equally?
No.
Quick note: the mic jack on the a7iii is in the top compartment on the left side of the camera. Many people have gotten it confused with the headphone/aux port.
Caution: in this video, it is not plugged in the right hole, so you will experience no sound coming out from the mic if you plug it the way it’s demonstrated in this video (as I sadly did, took me a whole day :( to figure out why my rode mic wasn’t working).
Hi not sure what you mean - the camera in this video is not an a7iii - you will need to use the correct mic input on whatever camera you use and this will be in a different place on every camera.
thanks for this! very informative! :)
You're welcome Regina - glad it was helpful :)
Does this settings also apply to Sony A7SII?
The same basic steps apply to all cameras - it's just the camera menus might look different or have things named a bit differently.
How does this mic compare to video pro the non plus?
One of the biggest differences in my opinion is the Rode VideoMic Pro+ is that is has a safety track feature - you can see it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/W9oRnkLGJcc/v-deo.html but there are a few other features
i need yr help plz.i cant setup my rode NTG with sony a7iii.can you plz help.thanks in advance
Hi I don't have an NTG so can't help with that specifically but make sure your cable is property pushed in at both ends and that you check the recording level settings in camera. It could also be that you have a faulty cable or microphone.
Hey man, great video! However, I'd recommend you invest in some lighting since it's hard to see your face. Cheers!
Thanks Nick! :) It was filmed with a light and I like to experiment with different looks sometimes, this was definitely a lower mood lighting kind of situation haha!!
Does the microphone take battery power from the camera if the auto on/off feature is active?
No, but you can also use 2 AA batteries if the rechargeable one runs out during shooting :)
Having the rode video mic pro plus for over 2-3y and only now i know the safety track feature omg 😂🙈
Haha yes it's always fun to find features you never knew you had!! :)
Keep up the great videos! This video was helpful to me as it's my first time using a powered mic. I'm also a small creator so I'm rooting for you. Keep finding low competition keywords! :)
Thanks Zac, glad I could help! :)
When I move/shake a bit the camera, it creates some noises (I think directly from the mic), is this normal? O should i send it back and ask for a new one?
Depending on how hard you move/shake you could get some noise but for normal use you shouldn't get noise because the mic has a built in shock mount system. Make sure the audio cable is not touching the mic as you move the camera around and also make sure the mic is securely attached to the hot shoe.
is this for any sony camera
The same basic process applies yes :)
Hi Jason... I bought this Mic based on your review. Can you actually us this mic and record directly into a computer via the USB cable??
Hi Alan, no the usb is for charging only,
@@JasonRobertsVideo I was looking for a usb mic ... looks like rose has some other good options
I've used this one lot's in the past for voice over work: rode.com/en/microphones/usb/podcaster
How can I set up the mic on a stand so it’s not attach to the cámara do I need a longer cable
Yes you will need a longer cable, the one in the box is not very long.
@@JasonRobertsVideo one more question anyway we can also include a tracking option as I wanna hear through headphones when they talk
You could try the headphone out socket on the camera and see if your camera will output the audio from the mic as you are recording :)
Plug in power is not working with my a7siii even after i pressed the power and high pass buttons like yiu said at 2:27.
Maybe try making sure the audio cable is plugged in properly all the way in in the mic or try a different audio cable to see if that works :) :)
@@JasonRobertsVideo My bad, I was plugging in the mic into the headphone jack instead of the mic jack. Plug in power is working now. Thanks again bro.
Now worries - glad you got it sorted :) :)
Will it still work if I don't have an audio rec level setting?
Not sure - depends on what level the camera would be set to - but you could try the different settings on the mic if it's too loud/quiet.
@@JasonRobertsVideo thanks 😊
I got this mic and I tested with and without and made no difference it's such a bad mic in so disappointed spent 600nzd and no difference any advice?
Hi - that sounds like something is wrong, make sure the cable is plugged in fully at the camera and the mic - the mic will have a little click when you plug the cable in properly to it.
@@JasonRobertsVideo I did that and camera picked it up but no difference.. is it because my camera voice is just so good it doesn't make much difference?
It's possible but I would still expect the mic to sound better than an internal mic in the camera - what camera are you using?
This was great thank u ✍️🤌
You’re welcome Dominique - thanks :)
Great video, thank you!
Thanks glad you liked it! :)
