Physician: "Addiction Is NOT Your Fault" | Dr. Gabor Maté

If you ask Dr. Gabor Maté, there's no such thing as an “addictive personality”. Nor is addiction a “disease” as such. Instead, Dr. Mate teaches that addiction originates in a person's need to solve a problem: a deep-seated problem, often from our earliest years, that has more to do with trauma than weakness or lack of willpower.
Gabor Maté is a Canadian physician and author. He has a background in family practice and a special interest in childhood development, trauma and potential lifelong impacts on physical and mental health including autoimmune disease, cancer, ADHD, addictions, and a wide range of other conditions.

My father was addicted to alcohol 40. years. As a head of the poor family, his only way was to get drunk again and again despite all the problems we had.
He gave up alcohol when the doctor told him he was going to die. It's more than an addiction, selfishness and cowardice.

It's sad that addiction can make us more selfish and cowardly (as you put it), but that's good to hear that your father has now given up alcohol. Best of luck to him!

The addiction is not the primary problem, but a solution. Obviously not a good one in the long run. The primary problem is attachment or lack of healthy attachments. I just don't think it's right to say "addiction made me into". In virtually all addicts you see early childhood trauma, insecure attachment. If you want to gain control over your behaviors, grow your relationships, both to others and with yourself..Just one person can change your life. Looking at alcohol or any addiction as some sort of evil, is just besides the point, if we understood the need for healthy attachments.

Great stuff from a pioneer in the addiction field, and he has moved into the psychological core of the self-hatred/shame/guilt that drives the addict's need for anesthesia. RELIEF is the key and central driver of all addiction. Childhood abuse, as in my case, produces a deep shame reaction/self-loathing and is the perfect set-up for craving relief from that painful state. Gabor gets this! AA runs from this issue and, instead, just keeps mouthing platitudes from a "Big Book" written 84 yrs. ago by a however brilliant alcoholic lawyer just 3 yrs. sober at the time, and another "12 and 12" written 70 yrs. ago, but both utterly uninformed by either the psychology of that time (think Freud) or all the advances since. Little wonder that so many newly clean and sober addicts/alcoholics fall away from the platitudes and relapse, in spite of attending the 12-step meetings and having a "sponsor(s)". Gabor presents the keystone of a new trauma based understanding of addiction and its source causes. THANK YOU!
